Yes, Bumpkin, we see Kelli C. all the time, as she trains out of Chino Hills area (about 30 min. from us) and she "does" a lot of the county shows with her students. Remember her great junior horse Paper Tiger? He lived to a ripe old age and was a school horse at Rainbow Canyon for a long time.

I took the baby greenie to Galway Downs (where the hold CCI** events) today. It was a hunter schooling show, his first o/fences. The jumps were considerably more imposing than what I expected! Add some palm trees and I could've been at Indio. (I bypassed Ride America to do this, thinking the fences would be easier?) /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I had 2 warm-up rounds and 2 Baby Green rounds. Beezer and I figured he'd either be broke or crazed by the end of the 4 rounds. He was great! Each round I asked more of him, until we were cantering the whole course. I decided to trot my changes, since I didn't want to open that can of worms, too. Then: I won the hack! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Guess who was at the show? Sandi Nisson, and Tammy Hickok was riding several of her clients' green horses. So Sandi says, "Several people have e-mailed me about this thread on the Chronicle's BB. So, which one of you is Beezer and which is Merry?" My sister and I were just cracking up. The question, though, is who e-mailed Sandi the thread?

So, when & where might we rendezvous at Pomona's Equine Affaire on Saturday? /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nice to hear you did so well!!
/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Looking Glass, Caron Gilbertson's old horse, was up here late in his/her career.
I recall seeing him at a show at the Evergreen Fairgrounds in Monroe late 70's.
That distinctive blaze and socks are hard to forget.
I keep thinking someone famous had moved up here with him, but I don't think it was Kramer's, (movie producer), daughter.

I was looking through some old Chronicles from 1975 this afternoon, and saw his picture. Is he still training?

Also Merry, on the showjumping 20 years ago thread, check out Melanie Smith in her rust breeches and navy coat....looking good!!

I join bumpkin in congratulating you on baby greenie's successful o/f debut (and the hack win).
Very cool! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Merry & Beezer

I sent Sandi Nisson the E-Mail. I though she would get a kick out if it. In case you don't know who this is, you sold your beloved "Echo" to me.

As you know, I have my share of Dennis Henderson stories, but we wont go there.

Who ever was asking about Tommy Lowe, I saw him at Indio the other day, so I guess he is still training.

Merry remember when I asked you about GiGi Gaston a few thousand postings ago?
Well I think I meant GiGi Green!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Looking at some olde HORSES that I went pulled out of my storage room in my rental house, I saw an ad for one of her horses.

Well, the baby greenie I'm doing right now looks/moves much like Echo; same mom, by Hall of Fame. I'm having so much fun with a horse that actually A) moves like a hunter and not a dressage horse; B) doesn't "hot up" under you; and C) is just plain bay (not a pinto---enough with the Quicksilver shampoo!). I have totally made my mom promise NOT to sell him.

With your background and knowledge, your input would be welcome here, Jules! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As for Tommy Lowe: okay, if he's still around, I don't feel so old! He's another one who always wore the aviator sunglasses ala Jimmy Kohn.

I liked that their ads in HORSES read
"ALL LAKESIDE CHAMPIONS ARE FOR SALE"
Hmmm I wonder what the prices were? haha
They sold Hour Glass. I thought that horse was so beautiful. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

How much fun this thread has been to "eavesdrop" on!! I'm a transplant to California--a college student in the SF area--and I event more than I show h/j, so I don't know most of the people you are talking about. Still, I pick up on some of the references and I love all the stories /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif --Jess

ps. Merry--congrats on a good show with your baby. I'll be down at Galway in a couple of weeks for the horse trials; what a nice facility (we're there a couple of times a year).

Bumpkin: I remember at Del Mar one year when Christy Fletcher and Cindy Hough were 1st-2nd in the AHSA medal and they had to switch horses in the work-off. I think Cindy was riding Imagine That, and of course Christy had Hourglass. What was humorous was that everyone in the stands was mumbling, "Well, since Cindy broke and started Hourglass at Lakeside..." /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif NOT that she wasn't an awesome rider, but she totally knew the horse. And of course, she won the medal.

JAGold: Welcome to Calif.!
/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Feel free to chime in anytime with comments.

Galway is sooo nice; the footing is excellent, although two years ago they tried to host some A circuit hunter shows, it had recently rained, and the hunter folks were NOT happy with the footing. Dragging it only made it harder the next afternoon. So now there is only this schooling show series there, though there is talk of having it county-rated.

Merry could you desribe the horse Imagine THat?
I sold a very nice Chestnut Mare in the late seventies, I am wondering if we are thinking of the same horse. SHe could of possibly ended up with CIndy Hough. Thanks for any information. If it is the same horse I still wish I hadn't sold her.

Merry, could you or Beezer e-mail me please? I'd appreciate it very much. jprice@fulbright.com or jprice11@houston.rr.com Thanks.

Now, back to the topic. Everybody is talking California H/J people from the 70's. What about us poor Californians who grew up riding saddleseat and only in our adult years saw the light of riding over fences? /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anybody remember Bob Bradley, a saddlebred trainer/barn owner from San Diego from way back? I learned to ride at his barn with Christy Anderson and Jim McAvoy. To tie it back in to the H/J scene, Hap Hansen was the hunter trainer, about 18 years old and his first pro job. Very cute, even back then.

Where shall we meet on Saturday? And when?

Re Hap Hansen and Portia's saddleseat mention - I saw an ad for a QH reining stallion in Horsetrader yesterday and it made a great thing of "Owned by Hap Hansen." A little side hobby? Or could there be two of the same name is a small part of SD County?

CHEF - I am taking today off work and so will email you those addresses tomorrow. Friday got to be just a complete overload and I forgot to call our dear BBer from Oklahoma re lunch as well and now feel like a total ditz California blonde (which I am, so I guess if the horseshoe fits)...

Feb. 5, 2001, 09:39 AM
Oh, Portia ... I remember the name Jim McAvoy. But for some reason I want to say he eventually wound up doing western horses?? And wasn't there a Michelle McAvoy who also did quite well?

A question to jog the memory banks of the Northern California crew: Merry and I are trying to remember the name of another trainer we saw when we came your way. He had dark hair and (often) a mustache. Was very competitive in the greens and opens but don't think he had many juniors/amateurs. Think his first name was Patrick?? Merry clearly recalls him too but she can't remember his name either (which is an incredible event in and of itself! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) This would have been the mid-'70s through the '80s; he was always trading championships with Larry Larson in the open divisions. Someone please come to the aid of two brain-fading SoCalers!

Feb. 5, 2001, 09:49 AM
I'm thinking Patrick Rostron??? I believe he was training up in Portola Valley during the timeframe you mentioned....but (stealing from Dennis Miller here) of course, I could be wrong! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Merry
Feb. 5, 2001, 10:09 AM
Okay...
dublin: Yes, that's who it was, I believe, Patrick Roston. I also remember Larry Larson's schipperke dog. We always wanted to borrow it to buff our boots. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

coreene: The 'real' Hap did/was dabbling in reining horses. You know, reining is now a USET sport, so who knows? Wouldn't that be wild, to be a member of both the jumping and reining teams? But he has a lot of top reining guys to replace, although I believe this is simply a business venture/hobby.

rusty: Imagine That was almost a liver chestnut, was a gorgeous mare, with a very dishy face and little or no white. Cindy did hunters and some jumpers on her. One year at Del Mar the mare got a little sticky going into a combination in jumpers and Linda Hough was on the rail yelling at Cindy, "Hit her! Use your stick!" and Cindy just sort of cowboyed it down this huge line.

portia: The McAvoy my sister is referring to (the western one) was LLOYD McAVOY, so I don't think he was a relation. But yes, I do recall the saddleseat folks from San Diego area. What about the little old lady with the Hackney ponies, Mrs. Smith, was it? Or was it Scripps? Try riding in a night-time hunter class following a fine harness class! Yee-ha! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I shall let my sister arrange for the Saturday rendezvous at Equine Affaire... me thinks just after the Linda Allen clinic? (I'll be wearing a pink carnation in my lapel...) /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And DUH! re Michelle McAvoy. Think I have Monday morning disease. Sigh.

And yes, Dublin, as Merry said, you are the winner for thinking of Patrick Rostron. That sure sounds right. THANKS!

Finally, for all those going to Equine Affair ... what say we meet after the Linda Allen demo? Merry won't be easy to miss: skinny blonde with short hair, dressed in blue jeans and in a dark green Spruce Meadows jacket with a jumping horse embroidered in gold on the back. Beezer, who is the exact opposite in looks, has yet to decide what she will be wearing. If anyone knows a landmark in the vacinity of the demo, lemme know and we can huddle around it in hopes of meeting up! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Wow, I feel like I'm interrupting you guys! Y'all are great for keeping this convesation going for 14 pages!

Coreene, sorry if I missed your call! I ended up being pretty busy anyway. I managed to get hold of one of my high school friends who lives out there & we spent Friday evening & Saturday at Disneyland!! How fun!! Thursday I went to South Coast Plaza. The highlight was going into Loro Piana and petting the cashmere scarves. By good fortune the manager was an Illinois farmboy transplant and was very friendly. Although he didn't know anything about the showjumpers. After spotting the price tag on the $1800 cashmere stole I about fell over. (Got any hankies?)

Next time I come out I'll try to give you guys more notice and we can make definite plans for lunch! Sometimes these trips are a little unexpected. . . . LOL!

Bumpkin you know that I will be sure to see you & Elliot next time I come to the PNW!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Merry-- You mentioned Joy Carney -- is she now married and with the name Joy Carney Campbell? I knew her when we both rode with Lumpy Kilham in the late 1990's (the last time I saw Joy was a few years ago and she had moved down to the LA area somewhere).

As for Joe Montana -- I have never seen a jump crew move so fast as when he fell off his horse in a 2foot jumper class at Calistoga a couple of years ago!! I don't know if he still rides jumpers, but his family still owns a ton of horses.

from AIDS, in the mid '80's. John French went to California to catch ride for Patrick's customers when Patrick first was hospitalized. But it quickly became a permanent job when it was apparent that Patrick would never have the stamina and energy necessary to continue running a show barn and riding all those horses at shows.

But, contrary to the original post, Patrick had a barn full of happy ammies. He was great with us. One of his ladies was named Rosie Garlock and she had a mare named Society Girl. This mare was a tad short strided, so Rosie never took back down a line. If the line was set on an easy stride, it was a "one cluck line". If it was set a little long, it was a "two cluck line". Rosie won a lot of ribbons, and all she needed to know from Patrick was whether the line was one cluck or two... I always cracked up when I overheard them talking at the back gate.....

Yes, Patrick truly had a way with older ammies. And we loved him.

I bought my very best, most wonderful junior horse from Patrick in 1984 when he was training out of Charter Oak. He was, I believe, one of Randi Snider's horses and I'll never forget Patrick's face when we went to try the horse and my MOM decided she would hop on for a little hack too /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Old Woody didn't care that she had her sneakers or loafers or something like that on and he just went for her /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I think that's what sold him!! But Patrick was very nice to us as well...

Thanks, PamM, for filling "us" in re Patrick. Once I connected the name to the right rider, I remembered that I had heard that he had died of AIDS, but that's the kind of thing that without firsthand knowledge, I didn't want to go spreading rumors.

And re having ammies, since I always associated him with the green/open horses, I obviously overlooked his other skills.

Someone several posts back noted that Judith Spreckels worked on the Menendez brothers' book and wondered why she gave up Horses magazine. I'll see what I can ferret out ... Leslie Abramson's (Erik's attorney) husband works at same company I do. (I'm thinking this is that "six-degrees of separation from Fleet Apple" thing going on here again. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )

Hap's significant other is (or was) a Morgan trainer, and therefore they are involved with the saddle and driving horses. I can't remember his name, though. Scary to say, but, I did the Morgan circuit for a couple of years.

And re: Joe Montana...he wanted to buy the real (horse version)Chef for his wife. My first reaction was NO! because I couldn't bear to seperate myself from him (Chef, that is, not Joe - although he is pretty cute.) Then he went on to spend almost $100,000 at the auction they were having in conjunction with the show...on ONE horse. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I may be in on the Pomona thing. I'll let you all know.

I thought this might be a good thread to post this question because I think this business is LA or SoCal-based:

About five years ago at the now defunct San Francisco Classic horse show, I came across a booth where the person was taking orders for stuffed horses in the likeness of your own horse(hence the name). You would provide her with pictures of your horse and she would make the stuffed animal and you could have it braided or unbraided etc.

I had one done of my old show horse and it is the cutest thing! I even had her make a dress cooler for him in our barn colors. I'd like to have another one made, but managed to throw away the information I had /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Does anyone know anything about this? The gal's name was Lee Ann something and I seem to remember that she used to show??

according to John Quirk (FWIW) Judy Spreckels just got tired of the monthly grind and deadlines of putting out the magazine. Plus, she really enjoyed the western end of it, and that went into such a decline in the late 70's, early 80's that it was practically just a H/J magazine anyway.

So John bought it. But then he ran into fianancial troubles with it and Joan Irvine Smith bought it from him (although she was always the unknown owner). That's when John got all grandiose and started calling it the offical magazine of the AHSA and USET. So it lost it's unique flavor.

To me it had already lost its uniqueness since I loved the gossip articles that Judy wrote -- all the "guess what junior rider's mom is sleeping with the trainer" comments...

I am guessing, but am pretty sure, that it must have died a financial death -- it was a magazine without a solid focus in the 80's when John ran it.

Too bad. It was unique -- I can still remember my HORROR when I saw my first issue. Coming from the east as a kid, the only magazine I had ever read was COTH. And my wonderment that an entire magazie was supported by "Congratulations to me" pictures! (Of course, as soon as I had something to congratulate myself about, I was a happy contributor, too). And my doggies Emily and Charlotte (the Bronte sisters) were proud horse show dogs of the month. I sure wish I had saved those magazines.....

There is lady who used to post on the Equisearch board under the guise of Cougar2. One post she mentioned that she made custom stuffed horses and sold them at shows. So it may be the same person???? You could try there, but I don't think she is around much now that that board went downhill...

Couldn't agree more PamM. Horses was wonderful and loved the newsy/gossipy stuff Judith had. It really lost alot in it's transition. Remember all the "Backgate" gossip, you knew exactly what where and how /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think you all are trying to remember Jim McEvoy. He did saddle horses, and trained morgans. He's still involved, but more from the official side now. And it's Michele Macfarland, she has the Sripps Miramar Ranch, rides the colored or paint saddlebreds. Great fun to watch she & Brownie showing at Del Mar..

But yes, I'll be wearing blue jeans and some sort of turtleneck, I'm sure, and if we're outside, the jacket (and it's not a gold horse: it's a chestnut and the rider has on a red coat!). /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

CWP, how weird about the custom horse dolls, as I created my own pattern for stuffed horses and made them to order and put dresses on the girls and pants and a jacket on the boys! I sold--- well, hundreds of dollars of them just by word of mouth. A couple of Christmases ago, I was living at my sewing machine. It's a great cottage industry (all cash!) but I can't even look at the pattern right now. I don't know of whom you're talking about, but if they're at Pomona, I'll get their card!

NancyL I saw Joy Carney-Campbell's photo in Show Circuit a couple of years ago in the AO's, wearing a shadbelly and winning something, so I assume she's still riding. She is such a long-time horsewoman; she's tough to beat because she doesn't make many errors. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Gold, chestnut ... whatever. And how could I have forgotten the turtleneck?? It's standard Merry attire! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Two other names from the past: Lolly and LuLu Miller. Lolly married Mike Edrick and they ran a very successful barn out here but not sure if they're still together? I'm sure someone can fill in the huge gaps in my memory banks....

I tell you these things and they apparently just slip right outside your brain!

That's one of the reasons the Lovely Spotted Terror went to Lakeview Terrace: to be tried by the Edricks, you numbskull! Yes, they're still married; they were looking at The Spotted Beast as a medal mount for their daughter. (Alas, like many exotic creatures, the spotted mare is gazed upon with lust, but is impossible for mere mortals to ride).

Lulu rode Getaway Devil when we were juniors/young ammies. Remember, he was by Getaway II. That's one of the reasons I bought that mare, Getafox, at the TB sale, because of the bloodline. Or DON'T YOU REMEMBER THAT, EITHER? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

CWP, Cougar-2 posts over here sometimes also. I had her make me a Lucien pony and a Portia pony, and I love them. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Yeah, 42 years old and still playing with stuffed animals.) I got the Portia pony to give to my trainer for her birthday, and after it arrived I had to force myself to hand it over. But I still have my Lucien pony at home. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Here's the link to her site -- http://www.hollyhorse.com/

As for Jim McAvoy, he was a saddlehorse person but then went into doing more officiating/managing type-stuff. He was the barn manager, I think, for the World Cup in San Diego a few years ago. He is still Hap Hansen's partner.

Feb. 6, 2001, 08:55 AM
Does anyone remember him? He was apparently training down in Southern California at the same time as my sister (I believe mid to late 70's) and then coincidentally they both later moved to New Mexico and trained there as well.

I was discussing this topic with little sis yesterday; she no longer is involved in the horse show business, but really enjoyed reading all the posts, and knew so many of the people we've been discussing.

She said she had found out a couple of years ago from a friend that Robert too had died of AIDS....it's very sad how many of the trainers we knew died of it in the 80's and 90's, before they really had any of the medical treatments they have now.

Beezer
Feb. 6, 2001, 09:38 AM
...because Merry, her beloved sister, has made Beezer look like an idiot. (And Beezer, really, can do that all by herself, thank you very much.) Beezer admittedly multi-tasks when family members -- with their unerring ability to call on deadline or as news is overtaking Beezer -- attempt to talk to her through the telephonic device. But in this case, Beezer can completely and honestly claim ignorance.

Merry NEVER TOLD Beezer that the Edricks attempted to ride the lovely Spot (or that during the same "are you SURE you want to buy this horse?" trial period that Dick Carvin and Francie Steinwedell-Carvin also sat their butts on said mare.) Beezer frequently finds out information this way. As in "Yadda yadda yadda ... Dad's surgery went fine ... yadda yadda yadda ... Arthur has to be laid up for six months ... yadda yadda yadda." Beezer would like to point out that in these two illustrations, Merry buried the lead of the story! Beezer was left wondering: "What Dad's surgery? Why is Arthur laid up?" Since Beezer has left the family compound, she is often kept in the dark about daily developments there. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So all Beezer knew was that Spot was going away on trial. And then Spot came home and Beezer had a new jumper. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Had Beezer known that she was going to be riding a horse that such illustrious personas had found "too spooky" and "too much horse," Beezer might have wondered just how much sisterly love Merry has for her. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Hey, so maybe you need to get involved a little more in the "business transactions" of the family horse farm!

And as for questioning my motivations for giving you the Lovely Spot to ride, just look at it this way: if not for you, she'd be a broodmare on someone's pinto sporthorse breeding program--- far, far away. This way, every time you achieve a moderately successful round on Spot, there are spectators who will be looking on with admiration. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As of right now, it has changed a little.

Saturday, in the Practical Horseman Arena (or, as our mom referred to it in a classic Mom-ism, "Practical Sportsman"), Linda Allen is doing a 10:00 a.m. clinic on Jumpers/Assessing the Course, etc. Then at 1:00 p.m. she does the Huntseat Equitation offering, focusing on trends in the showring. (I assume that means no show bows and the introduction of the newest fad, RUST BREECHES! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

...and demand rust breeches (always a personal favorite), hunt coats with velvet collars, white shirts with plaid chokers with big pins, brown field boots, flat bridles, brown helmets ... and then toss in Show Bows, too!

So would you wanna group after the first or the second?

They seemed to really come into popularity, at least on the West Coast, in the mid to late 70's, a few years after I stopped showing.

Along with the other fashion faux pas that I like, I have always enjoyed a lovely pin on the choker.

When Willem and I were still showing dressage, I enjoyed an extremely OTT selection of pins on the stock tie. One at a time, of course, but the more glam the better.

No, Coreene, I don't write for West Coast Jump. Think BIGGER!

I thought velvet collars looked very nice and elegant, too. I mean, we are ladies... right? Why can't we have a little touch of elegance. And frankly, I had a very pretty, antique pin I wore as a stockpin. No, it wasn't a shiny horsehead with ruby eyes! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I thought it was very tasteful.

We shall see each other at the conclusion of one/both Linda Allen clinics. If she has a question & answer portion, guess what I'm going to ask?

Don't laugh but I still have a navy hunt coat with a velvet color in my closet. It was my favorite coat at the time. I still think it looks nice.
I could probably be talked into wearing it if I could still fit into it.

Merry
Feb. 6, 2001, 06:44 PM
But does it have red lining? Remember, it seemed like a lot of navy coats with velvet collars had red linings! So, with the standard white shirt you look... oh, so patriotic! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

It has blue lining how boring! Must have been purchased at the end of the velvet collar fad. It also has four buttons /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif .Did my trainer let a dressage jacket go in the ring? I doubt it. THey a re not the brass buttons that were seen alot back then, they are the ones with the fox heads on them. Have I forgotten some major trend of the 70's regarding the number of buttons or was I totally out of style then too? /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Retro fashion police please advise /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It has been a long day, that is my excuse for rambling on about a almost 30 yr old hunt coat.

I had a gorgeous dark navy pinstripe with a navy velvet collar, with the 4 foxhead buttons. Those were the coats where you buttoned just the top 3 buttons. Of course, as the fashion pendulum swung all the way over, we then got the light tan coats with the chocolate brown velvet collars, and my fave, my own guacomole-creamy green coat with a dark emerald green velvet collar. It was smashing! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I sooooo badly wanted one of those coats with the brass buttons! But I could never convince The Ultimate Horse Show Mom that one was truly essential to my happiness and development as well-rounded person. Sigh.

Weren't they called "continentals"? Or were those the coats that had two vents in back and the squared off hem? Now, Mom did fork over to buy one of the those! It was olive green. In that then-cool knit fabric. I sure was styling! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Ah yes, the double-knit coats. Perhaps that's why I can't get into those Equine Athletics huntcoats: that stretchy fabric just reminds me of the huntcoat version of leisure suits back in the Bob Newhart-70's!

coreene: The lovely Vanna will now reveal part of today's puzzle... My sister totally understands why I don't just come out and say what all I write, because I really don't want my writing to be fodder for the BB. I'm just a hard-working freelancer. I write for a major equine publication (not PH), plus I consistently work on books that are sort of horse-owner manuals, guides to various breeds, etc. I just finished a section for a dog book on Jack Russells, which is fascinating, since I don't OWN one! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Then there are the equine websites I freelance for. I've also freelanced for ahem, a major newspaper on decidedly non-horsey topics. Right now I'm working on a fiction book set on a ranch (sort of a personal mission). Frankly, sometimes I get sick of seeing my own name, so I'm sure others do, too! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif But hey, it pays for my showing and I get to actually USE my degree in English! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The coat, shirt, collar, and stock pin combination that I'll never forget is the one that Diane Baker wore in the big final Grand Prix in "The Horse In the Gray Flannel Suit." That movie will preserve forever the velvet collar jacket, contrasting collar shirt look. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Which I too admit, I kind of liked.

Why is it that everyone screams about how the styles of shirts and jackets and breeches worn today are so "traditional" so we can't change anything? It sure isn't the same as the look from the 60's and 70's!

But, then, maybe that's a good thing! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

(Drum roll, please...)Rust Breeches!

However, I must acknowledge that she also was wearing, in that scene where Aspercel first arrives, what appears to be a cashmere twin-sweater set, a skirt and a string of pearls! Coreene,

I am so irritated with myself because I recently saw a picture of brown Vogel field boots advertised in a non-horsey magazine (Bazaar maybe? But I haven't bought that magazine in eons so it couldn't have been...) and I didn't keep the article to share with you all... They and another pair of boots by a regular shoe designer were pictured in one of those "in fashion" type of articles and the boots looked so horsey that I took a closer look and read the accompanying article--sure enough, Vogels!

I've still got my custom Dehners from 1970....they must qualify as antiques by now! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I don't really know why, since I haven't shown in years and am not even riding at this time, but for some reason I can't bear to get rid of them.... I certainly preferred them to my black Dehner dress boots, as they were much more comfortable. Hope they come back in style!

My previous post about Robert Foley may have got lost in the flurry of messages about 70's show fashion....does anyone remember him? My sister was good friends with him when she was training in Southern California, and then subsequently in New Mexico. He was another victim of the AIDS epidemic, unfortunately.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

CWP, I always loved them. I still love them. I will always love them.

Call me gross, but I thought those Lady Northampton boots that Wellington put out years ago in England were brilliant. You know, the RUBBER riding boots that were DARK BLUE at the bottom and then the leg was this rather jaunty beige fabric with blue trim. Too wild for words. A nice fun difference on muddy days. They had them in green, too. This was 10000000 years ago before paddock boots.

But what REALLY scared me was when I got the new Divoza catalog the other day and they showed a new line of rubber boots that included rubber field boots lacing halfway up the leg ...

Dublin: Afraid I don't know of/about Robert Foley ... though as must be obvious by now, I am much more aware of the HORSES than the trainers/riders. But if anyone knows of him, it will be Merry. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

For the Equine Affair attendees: If it's raining, Merry will refuse to wear her beloved Spruce Meadows jacket because of the leather sleeves. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif But it is a sure bet that the "skinny blonde" will be in jeans, a turtleneck and some sort of heavy coat (because it will not, you know, be above 70 degrees and that is just NOT acceptable /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ). I believe the ring the Linda Allen seminar is in is the main show ring over by the barns. Anyone know an obvious landmark where we can try to hook up??

Merry
Feb. 7, 2001, 07:47 PM
Dublin: What was Robert Foley's barn's name? Where in So. Cal. did he train? Can you think of any show horses in his barn? The name sounds vaguely familiar, but I need more data to coerce the brain cells into action.

And yes, I believe I may be donning my light blue down parka for Pomona. And enough about the "skinny blond" thing. I just ate 1/2 box of Stater Bros. brownies, so I may be bloated and unrecognizable by the weekend!
/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

The reference Katey made is to the book I'm slaving over. It is such a funny story (not the book, my mom, Queen of Horse Show Mothers). Last week my mom's snooping around, pretending to do some barn chores, while I'm interviewing my farrier for some background info for this book. I need to know how someone sets up a picket line, how much weight a pack horse can carry, etc. And my mom keeps walking in and out of the feedroom. I keep telling my farrier the storyline, about how, on this overnight ride, this "bad guy" causes a ruckus, etc., and the only way up to the camp is on horseback or by jeep. And the farrier starts telling a story about how his horses one time spooked in the wind and got loose from the picket line, etc. So my mom, Miss Snoopy Pants, storms into the feedroom, interupts, and says all huffy to our shoer, "I don't know what you're talking her into doing, but I am NOT coming up some mountain in a jeep to rescue her!" LOL!

It was like, "You know Mom, it's a BOOK I'm talking about! Stop eavesdropping!" /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL Merry...great story...I love this thread!!! I think the CA clique is going to win the title of longest thread if this keeps up!

I haven't decided yet if I am going to the Equine Affair or not. If it rains, I will definitely go. But if it is sunny, I don't think I can pass on my Saturday lesson. Is anyone going on Sunday? If I go, I'll wear something with my barn logo (Victorian Farms) on it, probably a black jacket. I might wear my cool straw hat I bought at Indio last week...it has a leopard print scarf on it.

The only part of the Pomona Fairgrounds I am familiar with is the nasty hall that I had to sit in for 8 hours a day, two days in a row taking an engineering licensing exam. Yuck. And I've blocked that out of my memory, so I'm pretty useless in the Pomona landmark department! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I was browsing through the Ride-Away catalog from GB this morning, and wow, there were hunt coats with velvet collars!!!

It was very similar to a cutaway, had the points, waistcoat, but was short like a normal hunt coat!
And came in tweeds or navy blue.

Oh NOOOOOO!!! Those jackets in the Rideaway catalog are a NIGHTMARE in real life. Too long, very shiny and Not Quite Our Kind, Dear.

Not to be a raging snob, but Jackets They Wear Over There and Their Boot Length have always been two of my pet peeves. Having lived there for three years and gone to every show possible to ogle horses, I earned my stripes.

One could, say, wear the brown field boots with the rust TS, and then a very nice new coat and shirt. Decorate throat at will, lipstick of choice, hair up or pageboy and then try like hell to find an approved BROWN helmet.

OR: you could just whatever struck your own fancy and convention be damned.

Say you were having an English day - you could toodle into the ring in your scary beige (they do a scary beige Over There - sorry DoubleClear but I don't like it) or canary breeches, too-short boots, stretchy velvet collared jacket (HAVE YOU SEEN THOSE PSEUDO SHADBELLY LOOKS THEY HAVE? The Equine Affair was good. I enjoyed the Linda Allen seminars, but it the rain kind of put a damper on things. I had a hard time paying attention while being uncomfortable standing (the benches were wet). I wanted to take notes like I did at the LAEC Equine Symposium, but it's hard to do when you are standing and holding an umbrella! And it was SO cold...I'm a wimp when it gets below 70. There were a ton of boothes with all sorts of products...we didn't have time to even visit half of them!

But I got to meet Merry and Beezer...than was fun! It's always nice to be able to put a face with a name, and now I'll recognize them if I see them at a show!

As for Indio, there wasn't too much to report on. I got an 8th out of 23 in one of my AA classes, which made me happy, and my horse was good. We're still sort of getting to know each other, as this is only our second show together. However, I DO have some VERY interesting pics of a barn setup that I plan to post when I get my film developed. Maybe I'll drop it off tomorrow!

Yes, Beezer and I saw AAJumper and froze to death in the stands with her. Boy, Linda Allen is a trooper! She gives a clinic in the wind/rain/cold and smiles and makes NO sarcastic comments; only constructive critiques. Paging George Morris...

It's nice to go to a clinic and hear kind of the basics being taught, yet have it attached to real-life examples. She reminded riders to adjust your track for your individual horse, how to save time in a jump-off, how NOT to run all the way to jumps on a long approach (you'll have a hard time getting your horse back for the upcoming turn),etc. It was unfortunately bitterly unpleasant weather! /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif We just could not bear returning for the huntseat clinic, although I peeked at the riders and they were out there in their huntclothes, drenched! We stayed inside and went shopping! I bought a pair of Dansko paddock boots from the Mary's outlet. My sister, of course, shopped until I had a migraine and my mom was going to collapse from exhaustion, so we had to drag Beezer to the car kicking and screaming. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

As for the thread dying a slow death, I assume it will be inevitable. Don't despair, Calif. clique (and former Calif. natives). We shall resurface again, even if under another unifying topic! I love the fact that we've gotten to know each other and gotten acquainted! As soon as the sun starts to shine again, we'll meet up at shows! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

So I was there! At the 1 PM LA clinic. How VERY rude of Mother Nature to intrude on the possible meeting with that thunder / lightning / downpour / hailstorm.

Merry, I sat at the top of the covered bleachers, wondered if one could get bottom problems from sitting on cold metal for so long, kept looking around for you and then thought I'd ask Linda my great question: "Could Beezer and Merry please stand up?"

And then with that thunder and downpour - well, you were there so you know what a great stampede we all did under the metal roof! Always something I think of after the opportunity of being hit by lightining strikes.

But on the whole, I didn't think the exhibitors were wildly exciting. Nothing much different from the one in Del Mar in November ... although those ladies with the fake hair things did a roaring trade.

What I love about Southern California: It is sunny the vast majority of time. What I hate about Southern California: When it finally decides to rain, it dumps a year's worth in a couple of days. Whoever said "All things in moderation" sure as heck never lived here. (And no neneer-neneer-neneers from the East Coast lurkers, please. We know we are wimps. But all this rain, combined with a couple of quakes over the weekend ... including one centered in Indio /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif ... and what for us passes as FREEZING weather is making us VERY cranky.)

Can't even ride. Even if I WERE willing to brave all this yuck, the horses -- being true native Southern Californians too -- simply do not "do" rain and the related mud and puddles. Envision hulking warmbloods tiptoeing around on the lunge line here. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Very sorry to have missed you, Coreene, at Pomona. We would have really enjoyed hooking up! But as AAJumper said, we exchanged brief, shivery greetings with her. And we came across a couple of other people we hadn't seen in YEARS and had a good natter with them. So all was not in vain.

As for the exhibits, I'm probably not the best judge, because I can ALWAYS find stuff to buy. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Merry, however, needs to fill you in on her, ahem, experience with the Van Teal saleswoman from Kentucky who probably set the phrase "Southern hospitality" back a hundred years. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Feb. 12, 2001, 01:54 PM
That was the woman, the one in the scary beige outfit. I left the booth shortly after entering, mainly because the scary woman took one look at me and was like, there is nothing here to fit you ... you have -- GASP -- something for a bra to actually hold up!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif So she zeroed in on Merry. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Which is why I didn't see the whole spittin' match/cat fight that erupted. But I hear tell it drew a bigger crowd than the John Lyons seminar. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I'm a betting woman, and I learned long ago that if there is one thing you do not do, it is bet against Merry in a fashion fight!

I KNEW IT! I could tell she was a wingnut (Beige Gal, not Merry) just on sight. And some of those outfits - especially the very frightening matched Yee-Ha scalloped chaps with the DO NOT TOUCH signs. Scary.

I was most impressed with the Paso Fino Saddle Meets Dressage Saddle thing over in the Spanish Horse area. The one with all the flowers carved into it. And didn't you love the Yee-Ha sidesaddle, but didn't it scare your backside at the thought of trying to stay on...

Where did you sit during the 1 PM Linda Allen Earthquake Rain Thunder Lightning Hail Seminar? Bet we were right next to each other and didn't even realize it. Tis great fun scanning a crowd looking for people when you don't know who they are ...

I just went to the Thrifty Horse and you guys were right! I fell in love. They had the most beautify Grand Prix hunt coat - dark gray with light gray and subtle purple plaid. Plus amazing Essex and Van Teal shirts for < $60. [Fortunatley I contained myself on buying the above items)

But the biggest jackpot of all was CANARY TAILORED SPORTSMANS in MY SIZE! I am so happy...I have beem looking for these for years! And they were only $90 - brand new! (and I couldn't get my credit card out fast enough for these)

So if you ever want to meet me at show you can recognize me by that fact I will be the ONLY one at the entire show in canary breeches. I will probably make a complete fool of myself in them but oh well. Its not how you ride, its how you look, right? Think the judges will by it?

I'm sure ... as long as she hasn't been sucked into the morass of mud that is our little ranch at this point (and she will NOT be rescued, I might add, by the Labrador retriever who belongs to our Quintessential Horse Show Mom because Merry, the alpha mare, is the only one that blankety-blank dog obeys and he is not pleased by this -- but I digress) ... that she will sign on and give you a full report of "the incident." This is how I earned my civil engineering degree through "Study at Home!" exercises: 1. Get shovel; 2. Dig one long, connecting trench so that lakes in corrals flow freely into arena, forming one huge lake; 3. Now dig trench from arena lake up to fence line; 4. Under cloak of darkness (caused by looming thunderclouds and a sheet of hail) dig trench under fence onto neighbor's property; 5. Stand back, approvingly, as water flows onto neighbor's land, forming huge lake in her arena.

Okay, now, about that crazed Kentucky woman at Equine Affaire! /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif So, I'm walking down the aisle in the John Lyons Shrine Hall and I come upon this large booth displaying some--- "remarkable"--- western show outfits. I pointed them out to Beezer, saying, "Hey, the western folks get to wear lavender sequins and embroidered foo-foos and I get dissed for wearing rust breeches?"

I then notice, due to factory-installed Huntclothes Radar, that the same booth is hawking English riding apparel. I see huntcoats. I see lovely shirts. I step inside and also see
Scary Kentucky Woman , now to be referred to as SKW. She's got big hair, a tight suit, and beige opaque stockings (NOT apropos for winter, but I digress). I'm admiring the huntcoats, but when I touch them I register a "red alert" (i.e., cheap fabric). SKW informs me that these are "Van Teal huntcoats. They're just on the market."

I notice they're only $100. I ask, "Is this just a promotional price to get them out in the public?" SKW skews her purple-mascara eyelashes at me and gives me the corporate history of Van Teal, chastising me for not knowing their imminent domain over everything huntseat.
/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Passing on the huntcoats, I slide over to the Van Teal shirts, 1/2 of which are stacked on a shelf system, the other 1/2 are on hangers. The ones on the shelf are boldly marked "50% OFF!". I just want to browse, because, oddly enough, I recognize some of these shirts as being in my closet at home. SKW barges up and says, "What size are you? You look like a 12." I begin, in my own, self-deprecating manner, to explain that I have to buy a 14 or a 16 because of my ape-length arms. So SKW slaps at a couple of shelves and says, "These are your sizes." I look, I kind of mentally go "ick", but then notice the ones on the hangers. Some of those look appealing. But SKW snaps, "Those aren't on sale!" /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Now I go back to the shelves, and decide to look once more. Maybe I could tailor a larger sized shirt? SKW intervenes. "I showed you which shelves were your sizes!" At that instant, I realize the price tags on the sales shirts say "$160." with a line thru it, and a hand-written "$80." I stand back in horror, then laugh. "You've got to be joking," I say. "I just bought this exact shirt at Mary's last summer regularly priced for $90. Plus, at Thrifty Horse, which is a consignment shop in Orange County (I had to bring them up!)I just bought a new Van Teal for $75."

SKW was about to blow her big hair! "It must have been a different fabric! These are 100% Egyptian cotton!" I tried to explain that no, I bought the exact same shirt, but SKW was getting steamed at me! She just was not in sync with the local So. Cal. karma. So I said, "You're not from around here, are you?" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"No, I'm from Kentucky!"
I smiled and said, "I bet you'll be takin' a lot of these shirts back there with ya'!" And I left. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

CHEF, sorry to be a flake and that I did not send you that info sooner, but glad you became The Chef Who Got The Canary! I have always loved canary breeches. Why I could just wax lyrical ...

RE THE RUST BREECHES: at Steinberg's at our barn I saw the most darling darker plaid (very small plaid) shirt, can't remember the maker, which would go SO nice with rust breeches and some very posh colored coat. Rusty, I don't freelance, unfortunately. I work for a small civil engineering/survey company, and we got hired to do the civil engineering (grading and drainage) for a private equestrian facility. There is a really good consultant doing the architectural work for the barns and accessory structures. He is also giving input as to the general layout of the facilities and the design of the arenas, in terms of specs for the subgrade and french drain system. We take his recommendations and do grading plans for the subgrade and also final grade of the arenas, as well as the drainage system. If you are interested in more details or names, email me! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I talked to my sister last night and now know why his name doesn't sound terribly familiar to Merry and Beezer....he was an assistant trainer with Linda Allen (tie in to the clinic!!) in Salinas, along with John Turner, and not down in Southern California, as I had assumed. Apparently he went to train in New Mexico about the same time John went up to Washington (Pacific NW connection, bumpkin!:) ).

My sister was an assistant trainer at Larry Langer's Pacific Horse Center in the mid-70's, and was wondering if anyone had any updated info on his first wife, Lois, apparently aka 'Twiggie'..... She said she had heard she had remarried and moved to Mexico???

Merry is doing the Slightly Inland lakes, I'm doing the beach version. The weather - so that all you East Coast luvvies can laugh - is quite rude and it's so muddy it will suck the shoes right off the feet. And the horseshoes, too. If this weather keeps up, I will sail over to Chino Hills soon to giggle more about Kentucky Woman in person.

Merry, do you think her hair grows like that or did she buy it in a can?

Archie is doing quite well in Indio now that he's branched out on his own after some very successful years working for Karen Healy. Or is that Healey? Well, you get the drift.

Wendy Carter's new outfit is doing very well, too.

Okay, you're right, coreene, it was Karen Healey he rode for (no, I never rode with her), but wasn't he somewhere else first?

And of course I remember "Twiggy" Langer, and her great gelding, Post Time. She often wore a light grey coat on that chestnut. Looked nice. The duel was usually between her and Kim Anderson on the grey West Point (her sister was Kris Vienna, who was married then to racehorse trainer Darrell Vienna).

The Kraemers (sp?). They rode with Russell Stewart, post-Christimar Farm days. (BTW, anyone remember exactly what the blow-up between was Russell and the Bushkins? Heard some rumors that it all had to do with money -- as in the amount he was being given as his "retainer" -- but never the details.)

The daughter "burst" on the scene as a really young junior. Their horses always had Christian names (One Way, a really nice big dark horse, is the one that sticks out in my mind) and all their congratulatory ads in Horses magazine carried Scripture and the "fish" symbol. They were here and then ... they were gone.

Oy vey, but we don't have turnouts in the sense of an East Coast Turnout. Out here, you get to go "into the turnout" for a half hour or so. Well actually you get to go for 15 minutes, but if you time it right you go longer. Scary, isn't it?

Let me know what part of OC because you wouldn't want to be in a stable on one side if you were working on the other. Traffic is a nightmare. I'll go ahead and spill the beans about my little sister, she won't mind. Her maiden name was Mary Kay Lathrop. After she worked at PHC, she was an assistant to Debbie Nordstrom Sands at Westlake Village Eq Ctr.

Then she married and moved to New Mexico, where she trained a number of juniors and amateurs on her own pretty successfully for 5 or so years. After a subsequent divorce, she got remarried and now is entirely out of the horse business. (although she definitely enjoyed this topic when I forwarded it to her - and we had a blast reminiscing about all the names that have been brought up!).

Wish I could get her to join in on COTH, but I have a hard enough time getting her to e-mail me!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

AS far as PV goes...it is a very nice place with trails all over the entire city. AS far as boarding goes, there are many places both public and private. My trainer there didn;t have her own facility so I boarded at someone's backyard and rode to public rings for all my lessons. It worked well because if you are looking for turn-out, you won't find it at any boarding stable there. Seahorse is the only good training barn there. Access to all these places from the freeway isn' the easiest, though.

I agree with Coreene, Huntington Beach is far and away the best place to board in North Orange County. Rancho Rio Verde in Long Beach is OK. No trails and right under big powerlines. Lisa Leger and brother David Wall are trainers there and they are really nice and pretty good. Lakewood Equestrian Center is also there but I don't reccomend it.

I board at El Toro stables. It has decent turn-out, decent trainers, and access to trails. And there is good lighting (a plus for me because I only ride at night after work.) There are a couple decent trainers there. There are several similar barns near El Toro but I don't know much about them. There are also some places in Anaheim I considered boarding at but only because I was desperate. Also the Orange County Fairgrounds had very nice box stalls, limited but large turn-outs, and Hillary Ridland is one of the trainers there. I hacked horses for her last summer and really liked them there and thought the horses were well taken care of...except for the fact there is no access to trails and they get little turn-out time.

Now on to "The Valley." I also happen to board a horse in Agoura Hills where my trainer is. (I know, I know, I really get around) There are so many places in that area. Our barn isn't all that fancy, we have limited turn-out, but great trails. The best part is we have a covered ring...and the footing in the outdoor holds up so well in the rain. It usually only takes 1-2 days and we are back in there jumping. There are about 5 big training barns located on the same street as us.

If I knew more of what you are looking for (training, retirement, trails) it would help. If you have more questions, you can e-mail me at

Re: Russell Stewart, Bushkins, Winrock Farm, etc. The CRAMERS were the ones who had the horses with religious names, like One Way and Easter Sunrise. They were part owners of Star Milling. The kids, I thought, were very nice and well-mannered, very quiet. And very dedicated riders. The mom rivaled ours as Queen of Horse Show Momdom, however.

Mr. Bushkin was an attorney in the entertainment industry.

How do I know all this? I, unfortunately, worked for the Stewarts in the Winrock post-Bushkin era. Sad, sad chapters in my Life With Horses. A whole 'nuther world, let's just say. Honestly, just thinking about it, even though it was so long ago, is like ripping a scab off an old wound. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Chef, your horse isn't at the old CT farms is he/she, right near the Kanan/Triunfo intersection? That's where my old horse moved for a couple of months after his new owner bought him. I was wondering if he was still there. I used to board at Pegasus Creek in Agoura, and while it was near my house, the turnout situation is horrible there. We had one turnout for 15-20 horses. So each horse only got out for maybe a half hour at the most!

Cramers. Is that as in Chrissy Cramer? She rode with Jamie Mann when I was at the fairgrounds, and I can only vaguely remember some controversy over her. Can't remember much else except her real plain bay that could jump anything! And everyone kept saying how well know she was. Maybe its not the same person though.

Yes, my horse is at the old CT farms, now Southland Farm.

We used to be at the gorgeous Malibu Valley on the corner of MuHolland and Stokes...with the ring right along the road and the grassed in bank on the one end. Unfortunatley it came to the city's attention that the owner didn't have a CUP for ust to be there and we had to leave /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The new place isn't nearly as nice but it works for us and we do have the indoor. Fortunately the Morgan trainer left and now we have one of the best vaulting teams in the county there. They are so much fun to watch. They used to be at Barron's Gate...what a place that is!

Where did Jamie Mann wind up? Didn't she leave the Fairgrounds? I know it was a big blow to her when the - I'm going to spell this wrong - Koustofsides family left. Didn't she move to the Valley?

Isn't it against the law to move from Orange County to the Valley? Ha ha.

Okay, this doesn't have much to do with anything, but my brain is getting overloaded as I prepare to go to Indio...

One Way was the key phrase in a Christian "marketing" slogan several years ago. The print versions (as in bumber stickers and billboards) also carried an arrow (kinda shaped like a cross) that pointed upward. Of course, there are also several Bible verses that mention Jesus and his being the "one way" to heaven ... but now you're "forcing" me to try to dig into the deep recesses of my Baptist upbringing, and before Merry slams me again for displaying a faulty memory, I think I'll stop now. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Merry
Feb. 14, 2001, 10:42 AM
CWP: Sorry that question is haunting you! "One Way" was a popular Fundamental Christian slogan in the 80's, as in "there's just 'one way' to get to heaven."

Now, onto... Jamie Mann. Coreene, your HB trainer, Tracey Jacox, used to be Jamie's assistant at Orange Co. Fairgrounds. I had two very close friends in that barn at the time. In fact, one of them bought their baby green hunter from us and put it in training there! Anyway, Tracey did much of the riding/training because Jamie would split to catch ride jumpers and GP horses. I guess that's the way to pursue a goal, but it kind of ticked off the clients at home who were paying boku bucks for her behind to sit on their horse. Eventually Jamie took a job with the Leone's as a barn manager/rider. By all accounts, it didn't last long. Problem is, she had no barn or long list of clients to return home to. Plus, she had a child to raise. Now she's starting up again (I believe at LAEC along with another trainer). She's also judging again. It's no secret she had one of those personalities that rubbed some show professionals & exhibitors the wrong way. I once read her judge's cards, and every horse in the class got negative comments from her, written in long-hand, so everyone could read things like "bad jumper; no scope; lame horse; poor mover", etc. Hello???? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif A recent LA Co. show manager told me Jamie has become a "new woman" and has become much more pleasant, easy to work with, and more cordial toward exhibitors. I hope so, as she had a lot of talent and a good deal of knowledge to share.

Read this in equijournal.com re a judge and had to share. I could just picture it:

Monsignor Melton was one of the most capable and sought after of horse show judges. He also had so much charisma and such a great sense of humor that he was also one of the best loved. When a show fell on a Sunday he would arrive early and hold a brief sevice for riders and spectators who had missed church service because of the early hour. At one such service he was startled to see a solid row of riders in the front row. He was so unnerved at the sight that he stumbled over a word and they promptly signalled a fault on him. That made him stumble two more times and they counted him out.

He's my old horse, and he lived at Southland Farm in November and possibly December...maybe later. He lived in the very first stall you'd come to if you were walking toward the arena from the driveway area. A woman named Tawne bought him, but she was only keeping him there on a temporary basis until her barn was built at her home. I went to see him once in Nov., and he looked very healthy, happy and well cared for. I was wondering if maybe he was still there.

On another note, is anyone going to Indio week 6? I'll be there and I'd love to meet up w/anyone who might be there. I'm pretty hard to miss when I'm riding...Cypress is a big seal brown w/big ears, and her name is on her jumper pad. Oh, and she likes to stick her tongue out. YEs, I will be at Indio for week 5 & 6 but unfortunatley because of the life interrupting thing called a job, I won't get there until late Friday night.

Who knows if we will even end up going due to the lack of stalls, my trainer not having a hotel room (so I get to listen to her snore all night) etc. etc. And now (god forbid) our groom isn't coming. Sometimes its more trouble than its worth!

Good luck in the classic. You'll do great! If you are around for the weekend portion of the show, we should get together.

Bumpkin and Dublin will be the recipients of the Show Circuits from Steinberg's in Huntington Beach. I, too, am dying of curiosity re who Beezer and Merry really are, aside from BB Pals, because I'm sure that with all the co-inky-dinkys I'm sure we've showed against each other.

Finally the identities of Merry et al are revealed...well, really just Merry since Beezer and Katey may have a married name??? Or did I get lost through the 25 pages of posts and names/marital status already revealed.

Anyway, I loved the articles, Merry. I had a faint idea that the real you was you because my friend started equestriansonline.com for whcih some of your articles were on, right?

And since you hold the power in your pen (keyboard) why don't you just write an article on how rust (and canary) breeches are making a comeback - as all wonderful (and not so wonderful) fashion trends do. We can all purchase rust breeches, meet a a show the day the article comes out, and awe the other competitors with our up to the minute fashion savvy.

Deal?

Everyone together now: "It's a small world, after all..."

And I like NEVER do my own photos for articles, because the magazines always send some pro out, but the websites are a little less funded.

Beezer and I are venturing to the Mary's sale in Del Mar on Friday 3/2. Praying this isn't a repeat of Pomona, there should NOT be a scary Kentucky woman there, so I should be able to purchase clothing items in a demure manner. I shall investigate the beige line of breeches just for this BB.

OK, so I'm not really Ms. Smiley. But I do share a small piece of two Pulitzers (honest ... I have the stupid little plastic plaques commemorating them ... somewere. In a box in the garage, I think. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif )

But Merry is the real star of the family. Me? I am just the wind beneath her wings. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Note to Merry: there was no YOU in finding Katey's horse! I dragged that kid all over looking for him. You did, however, give him the seal of approval ... so I guess that kinda counts.)

Bumpkin; yes please do keep me informed!!

Pam M, where are you? Did you see what Bumpkin found on Melissa Cardenas? High Barbaree 1971!? Ring any more bells?

Bumpkin, her other horses (that she mentioned) were, "Halcion", "Buenos Aries", and "Lumpy"

Oh well, c'est la vie! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is just amazing. I rode with Mr. Harris and Katrina (she used to scare the living daylights out of me!), then Don Swan, Leslie Oertly and then Kenny Nordstom (when he was dating Leslie.) I understand Katrina is living near Joan Irvine Smith.

Interesting enough, I went back to riding at the OC Fairgrounds about a year ago. I guess if horses are in your blood they always will stay there.

Regarding the OC Fairgrounds, there's some talk that all the horses and trainers will be relocated to the El Toro Marine base equestrian center after they completing refurbish it into (alledgely)a world class equestrian facility. The time frame for this to happen is between 3 to 5 years.

Are any of you still riding???? Here's a pic of me at Indio this year.

Someone had mentioned that they thought Cynthia Cambell had died but I asked my trainer about a onth ago if she was still in the horse trading biz and she said yes. Although I don't see her at any of the shows. When I rode in the 60's (talk about carbon dating), I bought a grey hunter from her. Unfortunately, by the time I started getting good placings at some A shows, I went away to college and sold her to Leslie Oertly.

Here's a extremely yellow picture of me and Eliza.

PS. Does anyone remember Susie Dickenson who rode with Leslie in the late 60's? /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Love the pics --- just curious -- what class was that at Indio where you could use splint boots? Cut e horse!

And the 1960's pic -- so veddy veddy 60's (nice auto release, there) -- LOVE the judges--especially the woman with her dress and fancy hair do.Does anyone know who they are?

re: Melissa -- saw a post about about the Bernie clinic and that he did not recognize his old friend. I LOVE IT /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif This is too small a world to tell untruths and not have them come back to haunt you.

Gosh! I am just going back reading all the old posts what a terrific feeling.

I rode with Peggy Osterkamp (I was about 6 at the time) and spent many hours riding at Winrock Farm.

Do you remember Jackie Krugenberg and Joy Tathwell? Patti Huddleston???

I remember Pappy J. I think Don Swan got him for a girl named Susan. I can't remmeber her too well except she and Don used to have ayelling match at every lesson.

Merry: Did the girl that died have a bad fall from a horse at Coto? I don't mean to be morbid.

Does anyone remember Bettye Lynn Heskett, of Heskett's Carpets fame?? I remember her having lots of ads in HORSES.

Also, how about Blaney and Fashion Plate, two very nice hunters from the late 60's?? There is an awesome jumping picture of Blaney on the cover of an issue of HORSES in 1967.

And in the western category, I'll have Seatac and Mr. Spats for $500, Alex..... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I swear, I thought this thread was done. Finished. Buried. I was composing its epitath. But what was Mark Twain's great line? "The stories of my demise have been greatly exaggerated." /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Along comes Suave Reno and new life is breathed into this thread again! Please, tell: When did you ride at Katrina's/the fairgrounds? I recall just about everyone you mentioned: Jackie Kruckenburg had Magic Moment. What about Janet Gonghwer (spelling?). She had a dark bay mare named Solar Light. And the Oertley's! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Katrina's SO (Al) died a couple of years ago. I haven't seen/spoken with her in a few years. My sister and I grew up riding with her as our first instructor. She was a like a Russian ballet teacher! However, she totally taught us to ride and how to care for a horse. Don Swan: now there's a name! He and Katrina were always at war.
Remember when the old Orange Co. Fair show was an A show? Now they hold motorcycle races in that arena during the fair.

And good ol' Ralph V. Walker. What a classic ring steward! My friend had a little beagle puppy, and she named it Ralph after him! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh gosh, now are we back to another episode of "As the Horse World Turns?"LOL!

I rode at the fairgrounds in 1964,65 and 66. The Don moved to Shady Canyon Ranch and we all went out there. Lee Garrett (Battle Tone), Dee Dee Beauchamp (ORCO & Tasman Sea)along with Mary Jacubek, Mary Ketcham, Mason Phelps (when he was in town), Nina Kotzin (Prince Like & Something Sweet)and the 2 kids that rode with Don also. Lisa who rode Rob Gage's old horse Harriet and her little sister who rode a horse called Mr. Jackson.

Boy, these memories just came flooding back...it's totally amazing. You bet I remember when the OC horse show was rated an A and then the Region 12 show followed. All the barns were wooden back then.

Don left Shady Canyon and went to a stable in Riverside and about that time I went to Leslie's in Fountain Valley where I did much better in the shows...back then we all bought our horses from Cynthia Cambell... Here's a picture of Leslie on Joy Tathwell's horse Hard Ice.

I really started with Katrina and Mr Harris abck in the 1958 when I was a wee tadpole. Do you remember these horses...Africa, Highglow, Little Indian, Clarney, Buckineer, and of course Mr. Harris's horse Tonopah Bill. I never saw him ride his horse ever.... Wow! I can't believe I am recalling all of this.

After Mr. Harris' my Dad bought me an old horse named Stubby and we kept him at Al's, the stable in Corona del Mar, where the 15th tee at Pelican Hills now stands. I was there until I went to Don's in 1964.....

Sheeze! I sound like a relic. Did you and I ride together? What was the name of your horse and who did you train with????

owned by Virginia Haley, she was always in Horses magazine and Fashion Plate ridden by Jimmy Williams. I can still picture them at the Forum horse show. here are some catagories to choose from:

1. Flintridge riders of the 60's;
2. Major show horses of the 60's
3. Major HS scandals of the 60's and 70's.
4. Whatever happend to......?

Speaking of Western people, did anyone know Mary Lou Street and her sister, Peggy, in Pico Rivera? She had a Palomino Quarter horse stallion she called Buck and a gray Arab stallion. This was in the late 60's. I think she had come Spiller's stable on Carson in Lakewood. She also had a big roan Appy gelding called Durango and a dog named Troubles.

This thread goes crazy again! I feel like Regis Philbin:"This place is OUTTA conTROL!"

Oh please, SUAVERENO, can I have horse show scandals of the 60's and 70's for $500? (Ding-ding-ding!)Oh wow! A daily double! So, give me a good one, okay? Just anything without subtitles (have to see the movie, guys!) /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Love the Hard Ice photo. That horse went into Judy Martin's barn in the mid-70's and everyone rode it for their eq. classes. Pretty funny; the gate would open at Del Mar, and he'd come in with a different rider/different saddle and troop around again!

As for the Don Swan bunch, Mary Ketchum, last I heard, went back into nursing. Mary Gail J. is still riding jumpers (somewhere). Gosh, I totally remember Lee Garrett and DeeDee Beauchamp! I, however, was a mere 14 or 15 back then; I'm 45 now, so do the math. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I know, it's amazing I still have brain cells that can think that far back!

And now, a word from our sponsor...I called on an ad for a puppy (I'm in desparate need for a smallish NON-Jack Russell puppy). It was a Corgi ad; the breeder got her dogs from---- and the lovely Vanna will now turn over the name...Cynthia Campbell, who apparently is alive and well and living in Riverside and breeding Corgi dogs! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As for the western horses, not only do I recall Seatac, but what about Linda Baker and all the Chex reining and stock horses, like Bueno Chex and Shirley Chex? Ah, the days of trying to school over an oxer in the warm-up ring, only to get cut off by a stock horse in the midst of a spinning frenzy!

And yes, I do remember Blaney and Fashion Plate. When I showed, Myra Moss Milburn owned Fashion Plate (liver chestnut with all the white) and rode with Flintridge. I always remember how she got in that exaggerated Flintridge 2pt. but her calves NEVER had any contact with the horse's sides. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

June Fallaw is long since gone from the scene.

PamM: Mousie (Marcia) Williams is at a nice training barn with mostly amateur adults in Pasadena. She usually instructs/manages. We sold a horse into her barn about 3 yrs. ago. She judges a lot ("R" AHSA).

Finally, I'm negotiating with the TB of Calif. magazine on a possible writing assignment, and so they send me a copy of their various publications. In their montly magazine for trainers, who is profiled? With a big color photo? You'll love this!John Sadler! Geez, weren't we talking about him, oh, 14 pages ago? How I thought he was so cute, rode at Flintridge on O'Shea plus some of Jimmy's jumpers, and then I ran into him at Hollywood Park about 5 yrs. ago? Gee, LOL, should I e-mail him this thread? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Now, must go to bed and dream about men with half their heads shaved, and flying thru bamboo trees. (Maybe I should go see the movie AGAIN!!!) /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

While we aren't supposed to be purveyors of mindless gossip on this board (geez, sounding so Mother Hen-like), must know about the junior rider, especially if was a biggy.

The only blonde I knew of "back then" was Peggy Osterkamp-Pinza. Now, do you remember her, Suave? You also mentioned, from Don Swan's barn, the sisters with Rob Gage's old horse, Harriet. Those were the Wagners: Lisa and Amy. And then there was a pretty dark-haired girl I became friends with for a while, Amelia something. And from Katrina's, you mentioned Mason Phelps. Yes, I believe we discussed him on page, oh, 19? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif My first show horse was Katrina's big buckskin he used to ride, Champ. Geez, those were the days!

Peggy rode with Leslie Andrews, Leslie Oertly and yours truly at Mr. Harris' for awhile. He was the only game in town for such a long time. They were the big sisters who mentored me so to speak. I believe the year was 58. I was just a wee tadpole.

Here's an interesting clip from the Daily Pilot (remember when it was actually a Newspaper???) of the Don Swan gang. Don't cha' love those styles?

I think I have some old pics of Mr. Harris (Lionel T. Harris) somewhere that I'll post.
