View Full Version : What You Always Wanted To Name Your Horse/Pony...but couldn't

Blue Devil

Well, I was thinking today, about how I wish I was still doing the pony thing, and I would get a pony jumper and name it Widespread Panic. I don't think the name is appropriate for my cute little hunter....sadly enough!

I've also always wanted to have a grey horse or pony (I've had a strawberry roan, chestnut, and bays but alas no greys!) and name it Blue Willow. My mother started collecting antique British Blue Willow plates for me as an infant and I've always wanted to name a horse that.

What have you wanted to name your horse/pony but haven't?

As a child/teen, the only way I could ride was to ride my professional aunt's sale horses. One year we had a lovely gray TB mare who happened to be a pig in her stall.

My aunt duely named her 'Princess Poopsalot' Oh, the humiliation! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

We had a horse in our stable whose name was ODTAA.
The story goes that the mother and daughter came home and told the father they had purchased a horse, and he said, Its One Da*n Thing After Another.
Thus ODTAA.
When the stable owner purchased this hunter for her son and daughters the name was changed back to Mr CJS, his racing name.
I wish I had the nerve to name a horse that, but I feel there is only one Odtaa. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think it would be really fun to name a junior jumper Hot Damn. Or Alise. Don't ask me why.

And if I ever get another hunter, its gonna be Destined or Starlet, depending on the gender.

I have always wanted to name my horse Braveheart, because when he went to first shows and still now he was sooooo brave. But there are too many Bravehearts so I named him Edison because once the light blulb goes on in his head he's got it.

Hmmm.. says Erin as she opens up her list of names...

Seriously, I have a huge list of 200 plus names on my computer. I have my future horses picked out with the names. Hey, if you own a big show barn someday, you might just need those names!

Let's see, there's...

Nightstyle, Lullabye, You're Invited, Dear Diary, Sock Hop, Missed A Sock, Hello Kitty, Promise Me (my 16.2 chestnut TB- my future ammie horse if I ever find him!), Ballerina... and so on.

I really wanted to call my current horse, "A Backstreet Boy." Think, if you will - "A Backstreet Boy in the ring now, A S up." But, that got vetoed.

Another I'd like to swipe at some point would be the name of my dad's boat - LTAM. When he first got it, every woman in our family started dropping subtle hints that "The Princess ..." would be an *excellent* name for the boat. Finally, Dad settled on LTAM, which stands for "Lets Talk About MEEEE!!" in reference to his (henpecked) life.. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've always wanted to call a chestneu mare Testarosa. It is Italian for "red head", and also the name of one of the nicest Ferraris (the cylinder head cover is painted red). Ferrari liked the name so much they reused it on a more recent model.

But when I tried out the name on people, too many thought I was saying "testosterone" which is something else entirely

Blue Devil
May. 13, 2001, 12:11 PM
I'm sorry Janet but when I heard that, all I could think of was Testosterone as well!

Italian names are so beautiful! I went to Italy for 2 weeks over spring break and had the best time. Ahh, to be in Florence, Capri, or Rome again.....

They would/do make good horse names, huh!?

I think I've given this topic almost too much thought.

I want a jumper or event horse named Captain Insano. Plus a black and white paint named What about Snoopy, a palomino pony named Don't Forget Woodstock, and a clumsy little colt named Good Grief. The last three names stemming of course from my current horse, Charlie Brown. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My personal favs are:

Frank Sinatrot
Dean Martingale
Garth Bucks
Girth Brooks

I owned a horse with the registered name US Choice. While I am a stickler about NOT changing names, I simply had to change his. Right after I bought him, the vet had to drug him to do his teeth. Bob Marley was in the background and the horse was slowly bobbing his head in time to the music so he was christened RastaMan.

My current horse Resolute will likely keep his name but he has been SUCH a bear I really want to name him the Sin Wagon after the Dixie Chicks song-next on course LMH riding the Sin Wagon. If you ever listen to the words it willmake you laugh til you cry.

I had a Palomino named the Lemon Peel (Atlanta folks should get a chuckle)-it used to be a male "dance" show in Atlanta (*ahem*-strip joint)

My mare is Rosemary but I really am certain about Diamond Lil for her (ok "more mature riders" you should remember hearing of good ole "friendly" Diamond Lil

Oh-I also thought of Buckle Bunny for her since she is QH-again I laughed my butt off but received no support for that one!! (If you don't know what a Buckle Bunny is just ask)

Doesn't Molly Ashe have a gp horse named Resolute?! See, TheResonator, now you have a legit excuse to name him Sin Wagon!!

If anyone here HAS the song Sin Wagon by the Dixie Chicks and they also have Napster, please IM me, my name is Embuzzy....or you may Napster IM me at the same name...I would like to DL that song, but it is impossible to find songs now b/c of the search limitations!!

Some other names I really like:
Got the Blues (for a grey)
Painted China (for a pretty dapple gray)
Good Morning
Do the Deed (Just kidding! I actually know someone, who for their pride will remain anonymous, who wants to name their children's jumper that!!)
Gift Wrapped
By the Bayou
Bank Notes
...there are more!!
One-word names: Ornate, Lyric, Wembley, Ballet, Baroque, Credo (means "I believe" in Latin), Pulchra (means "beautiful" in Latin--feminine case), Fio (means "I become" in Latin), Mores (means "character" in Latin--masculine word, pronounced w/ 2 syllables, as in Morr-ehss), Predicted, Indigo (blue roan or dark dark dapple grey), Crystalline, Superstitious, Emory, Gilded, Paisley, Entrusted, Rhapsody, Montecarlo, Denim, Metallic,....ooh I could go on forever... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I've tried naming two silvery-gray geldings Nippy Day and both turned out to be disasters: the first one I bought at a TB sale and he had a problem with his stifle. The second one I bought from a girlfriend, ahem!, and he turned out to be proud-cut and tried to mount every horse that rode up next to me.

Maybe the name is cursed? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

In the evolution of psychology there was Freudianism (first force), behaviorism (second force) and humanism (third force). I figure horses teach me alot about myself as a human being and how I interact with others. I swore 20 years ago that if I ever bought another horse I'd name if Third Force but it just really didn't fit my pink horse's looks or personality. I guess I had the idea of a big brown TB.

My mom always wanted to name a jumper "The Clock" as in "a jump off against.." I did have a horse named Hellzapoppin (also suggested by my mother) and the announcers had a great time with it. Her barn name was Angel; the show name was a lot closer to her true personality.

Nylar
May. 14, 2001, 03:22 PM
Jiby>there is/was a horse in my area who went by the name "Sure-Win William". My mom and I always thought that was really cute.

I wanted to call my horse "Delayed Reaction", but no one ever would let me even ask his owner, so I continued to show him as Nylar. Of course, after I left the farm, the girl that started leasing him promptly took the name and started showing him under it. GRR

My best friend and I have a whole list going:

Partner In Crime
The Third Man (she already has a pony and a fiance)
Here and Now
Outside the Lines (for my next horse, who WILL be a paint)

I always wanted a dark bay that I could call Cosmic Charlie (yeah, another dead-head on the BB). The problem being that I always wind up with mares, or chestnut hunter types. The name just never fit, but I still think it's kinda cool.

I did talk Jumphigh into showing their Irish jumper as Crazy Larry at a local schooling show. The name just seemed to fit at the time......needless to say the name has since been changed.

I must admit that when I was growing up, we took great pleasure in changing the names of our horses to shock our trainer at winter schooling shows. "In the Nude" was one we liked to use.
"_ _ _ _ _ 's (trainer's name) Joy Toy" was another one of our favorites.

The look on his face was absolutely priceless. It was almost as good as when we would call him dad when he was trying to pick up a woman!!!! Of course, this was something we did all the time.

The first tb colt I raised out of a leased mare, I wanted to name Essobee but the jockey club wouldn't accept it. Gee I wonder why. It described his mama to a T.

Another horse that came from a dealer with no name was a palamino. Now how many palamino's do you know called Sunny? It was a rainy Sunday evening when I went to pick him up and decided his name would be Rainy Day Sunday, calling him Rainy for short. My eventing trainer just loved it and used to ask people to guess what his name was.

Have a qh that's name is Chocolate Centurion. Have owned him for about 9 yrs and he should be called Dennis the Menace.

I like:

"Fancy That", but my horse isn't really fancy and I think we'd be laughed out of the ring.

"Truth be Told" for a really honest horse

I named Mickey "Splendid", but he thinks (according to the animal communicator) that isn't masculine enough for him and he'd like his name to be "Grand" something or other. I think that's pretty funny since "grand" and "splendid" are synonymous. But I was thinking "Grand Gesture" would be a good name for him since by the generosity of help from special people in my life I was able to buy him. Maybe next year I'll change it.

My friend and I used to joke about this other girl's horse saying she should name him "Chernobyl", since he always had meltdowns. Either that or "Runaway Train"...

Or we thought we could name my friend's horse "Verde" since he's green...

I always keep horse cookies in my tack box and Warren knows when he has been good -- as soon as he gets back to his stall, he puts his head in the tack trunk looking for his cookies. Last week he was very very good and he got tons of them. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Some one suggested I rename him "Will Jump For Cookies" [and maybe make a sign to hang on his neck?] <G>

I think a really cool name for a mare is "Esperanza" ("Hope" in Italian).

What a grea topic...considering the name for my colt is still pending! Im getting great ieas!

What about: "On Deck"

"Okay, On deck we have Blah Blah and On Deck is one away." How confusing would that be?? Muhaha, Im evil.

If I had a black and white pinto, I would name it "Moo"

ADHAD H "Attetion Defecit, HyperActivity Disorter Horse"

"Abductee"

and what a fried suggested after I mentioned the "Abductee"..."Probed and Proud" ewww.

I also kinda like.

"That Explains It"
"While Supplies Last"

I have a lil welshy brat. But then again she isnt a brat all the time. But I cannot think of ANY barn or show name that I really like. Last year it was "Cocoa Chanel" and she had no barn name. But I have decided that I really don't like that name for her. Any suggestions? Here is a pic just for a better idea. -Pic of me and her at Pinehurst- (http://community.webshots.com/storage/1/v2/9/93/85/28199385goDqAcPXWg_ph.jpg) /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Trust me, counting ceilings tiles is fun!! Have you ever tryed to make ants?? Well that's pretty fun too. Who here likes llama pellets?? Ever tried piling all the pillows in your house in your dining room and diving onto them from the ottoman? Well that's pretty fun too! AHHHHH the school jello is after me!!! Wait.....is that Michael Jackson and a Hershey's bar?? Uhhh...I think I'll go vacuum the cat or shampoo the lawn....you know something productive like that.

I wanted to think of a different name for a horse I was taking into the low jumper classes. We called him "Baldy". (original, huh?) So Mr. Spunky came up with "The Bald Avenger"!

I thought it was really cute -- until he told me what it means to 99.9% of the male population!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

When I was listening to the newest Brooks and Dunn song the other day, I decided my next horse needs to be "A Wing and Prayer". You know, "So and So, up next on A Wing and Prayer.

And, yes, I'm sure there is a horse named that somewhere.

When my best friend was showing my jumper, Cat Nap, better known to all of us as Pig, we tried to think of fun show names for him.

Being big rock fans, we first looked at Limp Bizkit songs...Are You Ready(a popular line in Limp and Korn songs) and Just Like This were are favs.

Then we decided to play of the "pig" I just wanted to call him "The Pig". A friend wanted me to call him "Piggly Wiggly." My best friend wanted to call him "Zuckermen's Famous Pig", you know, like Charolette's Web??

But our boring trainer would never let us change it. Oh well. We already have lists of names for our horses when we are old ammies!

A while back we were given a beautiful and sweet, but acutely lame, 18hh 3yo named ALMOST ELMER'S...as in the glue! Kryswn might remember him-he was out of her neighbor's mare New Frontier, maybe a '92 baby? Unfortunatly the name was accurate. We got him free to see if we could fix his OCD lesions, but it wasn't meant to be for the little guy.

I still get a kick out of that name even if it was at the expense of poor Elmer! Cruel, cruel sense of humour that man had!

When I got Katie, the whole ride home we were trying to figure out a barn name for her, for awhile, it looked like she was going to be bay mare. Then Kate came to me. For a show name, we were going to use Elle est Grande or Je suis grande. Then it was My Kinda Girl, now its Shall We Dance. I also like Follow me Home.

I saw a pony named Spunky Monkey, Loved it!

I didn't really like the name and wanted to change it...my finance suggested One Too Many...

For a show name, I had been thinking of calling her Just Like John because the day I got her she ripped her head open on the trailer ride and needed stitches...the same day my fiance fell and broke bones in his face and needed stitches. However, she isn't smart or clever enough to earn the name.

Another suggestion from a friend was Forget Me Not because Willow was supposed to have been aborted and obviously didn't get aborted. However, I think Forget Me Not would be a cute pony name not a name for a fairly plain bay horse. Willow's not very fancy...I keep telling myself that she's in the awkward yearling phase (I guess not she's technically a 2yo now...but she was born in Aug 2000)...She still doesn't have a show name...

My QH has the world's dumbest name...Light My Redford.

I gave my TB her show name Susquehanna Squall. She came with the name of Squall & I didn't want to change it...it means a brief sudden violent windstorm, often accompanied by rain or snow. I live near the Susquehanna River which I think is so pretty, so I combined the two.

MKB...
