We have had so much rain, that I feel like I'm raising hogs and not horses right now. We had a drought all summer and now it won't stop raining. It will stop for a day or two and then start right up again. It has not had time to dry out since Sept. I have gravel dust at the gates and high traffic areas, but with so much rain, those ares are sinking away too! What do other people do to help with mud reduction around there barns? The horses sure don't seem to mind slopping through it, but I DO! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Tight fitting rubber boots...so they won't get sucked off in the mud. What about pea gravel? That seems to work pretty good around here and the gravel is so small that the horses don't seem to have tender feet walking on it. There is probably not a good answer...only dry weather. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, I just went out and spent 40.00 on a nice tall pair of rubber boots with a thick lining for the coming cold weather with the mud! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I have never tried pea gravel. Thanks that is a good suggestion. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Not wood shavings but the wood chips you see on the side of the road where small trees and limbs have been sent through a chipper and you see a pile of the chips -

you don't have to worry as much about your horse graveling - they absorb some water but mostly pack down and mud does not come through as easily - I swear by the stuff in all high traffic wetter areas

contact either a large landscaper or the state or even a sawmill?

My barn is on a hill and rubber boots are not enough you also need good tread to keep from sliding back 3 steps for every 2 you take up the hill! (when you are out in the pasture)

Quality is never achieved by accident - but rather by Design!

Some people have used limestone fines with success on muddy gate areas. It's supposed to get
very hard.

Norsire, after going through soupy, boot sucking muck (heavy clay soil) I decided to try geofabric around the bad areas. We just put it down about 10 days ago and it's working fabulously!

The fabric is purchased in rolls, laid out on the ground and covered with limestone screenings. The fabric allows the water to seep through but stablizes the ground and the gravel or screenings are kept separate from the muck. The gate and water trough area of my bad weather turnout was always extremely mucky - to the point of being pulled out of my suctioned in boots if a horse came out of the field quickly. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif It's now solid, decent footing after weeks of rain and wet snow. I know a few people that have done entire winter paddocks with it.

Here is a site that describes how to use it Geofabric Application (http://ohioline.osu.edu/aex-fact/0304.html) . We only had to prep a small area of the ground we were covering, laid the fabric, dumped the screenings and spread them. It took 2 days to do a 40'x40' area inside the gate, with about 4' on the outside of the gate and a walkway to the barn. And that was without anything but me, a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a rake.

One friend of mine that did an entire paddock scraped the area to lower it a few inches so that when they were done it would be level with the surrounding area. They did use a bobcat to spread/dump a lot of the crushed limestone but you have to be careful that you don't crease the fabric too much when moving the machinery on it. The raking and levelling still has to be done by good old fashioned sweat. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I paid $350. cdn (about $230. US) for a roll that is about 11' wide and 330' long and I used less than half of it. One of the more economical ways I found to deal with the problem.

Do a search on Google for "geofabric" or "geotextiles" to find who has it in your area. One company in the US sells it under the name of Cow Carpet, but they were pretty expensive.

Hope this idea helps.

We have just built a beautiful new barn. Because of all the excavation work associated with it - I am sure my mud is worse than anyone elses /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif . I am ready to go to Home Depot and get the knee high contractor boots used for wet concrete..... All my horses have a thick crust of new mud every day. I agree they don't seem to mind - but it is very slow going. One of my fields has the weanliings which I go out in twice a day to feed and hay. I know it is just a matter of time before they bump into me and I get to take a mud bath. ARGH!!

We are scraping off the mud and putting a blend of stone and screenings in all the gateways. It is slow work as they try to do it after a few "dry" days. Still won't help the rest of the fields though...

I am sooo sick of mud. I had a load of crushed stonedust delivered a month or so ago, but have not been able to get to it to use it. I just had another delivered to the middle of my parking lot, so we didn't have to wait until a dry day (yeah, right) We spread paths as many places as we can, but and it is much better, but still soggy in lots of places, and my small paddocks are like sinkholes.

We spend a couple of days terrorizing my young stallion to get him to go into his paddock. I thought he was going to kill me. He kept trying to join me on the "other" side of the gate, and no way was I going to actually lead him into the paddock. He kept saying, if you won't go in there, I am not either! My body space was becoming a serious issue, as once my foot got caught under the gate when he was pressing to get around it! I was beginning to like my space more than his 2 testicles! I finally quit blaming the problem on his testosterone, and realized he was just "self-preserving". Now, I use bribery. He knows there is a handful of grain in the bucket just inside the slop, and apparently the way to his heart is thru his stomach, as he walks (scrambles) nicely thru the gate.

I have not been this sick of Winter before March - AND IT IS ONLY NOVEMBER!

So Follow, Me Follow, Down To The Hollow, Where We Can Wallow, In Glorious Mud!!!!

A little ditty that my mother used to sing to us. Anyone else heard of it? Or am I the only one raised by someone odder than odd??

Anyway, I am also going thru an UNBELIEVABLE mud sojourn. To the point where my horses don't even want to go out - period. It is swiftly becoming uglier than ugly. To get them to cross the "ugly zone", I've been topping it with used straw/manure, which I KNOW is just ultimately adding to the problem. But I can't have any type of stone/dust delivered till things dry out a little, at least.

Turnout has now reached catastrophic proportions. Crazy horses that don't want to go out! HELP!

My body is a temple - unfortunately, it's a "fixer- upper".

I live in the Great PNW Swamplands- home of 9 months of mud. We've found that "inch and a quarter minus" is the only way to go if you use straight gravel. If you use smaller like 5/8" minus...or pea gravel the horses will just blow through it and it mixes right in with the mud. The "inch and a quarter minus" has bigger pieces mixed in and will pack and hold together better.

Pony1, the wood chips sound like a great idea, and the only possible thing I can do right now, until the mud dries up. My neighbors have huge piles in their fence rows from the state deptment. I will call them today and see, if they will let me have any of their excess wood chips. It is so deep and muddy right now this is the only thing I can do. I also, never thought of how much the wood would even help with absorbing the water. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

breezymeadow, I love your Mom's saying. Now, as I slopp throught the mud this morning, trying to keep my tall mud boots on, I will be singing it to myself, so I don't cuss the man above for so much rain! My boots have almost come off so many times, it is not even funny anymore. I have to walk close to the fence so as one of my boots is sucked way down deep in the muck, I can hold onto the fence as I excavate my boot out of the sucsion hole, trying to pull me under to unknown depts! ROFL!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Run-A-Muck, I have seriously thought about doing this in the one paddock. I was going to put the large gravel down and then go back over it with gravel dust. I'm just worried about stone bruises and gravels on the horses hooves. I guess they walk across creeks and rocks in pastures. But, it is such a concentrated area, I worrry about it hurting them. But, if the large gravel stayed down underneath as a filter to let the water go down and the gravel dust stayed on top it may just be my best solution. "Inch and a quarter minus" gravel is a mixture of pc's up to an inch and a quarter and everything below that in size...so you don't have to layer it. They may call it something else in other parts of the country.

I have barefoot babies on it...unshod adults, and shod horses with no problems except for the 2 fools who love to dig in it. Going out to feed is a real treat when you roll the wheel barrow into a new water hazard that wasn't there the night before.

I just got some for my driveway about a month ago. On my drive way, we first put down #3s, which is 3 inches and then the crusher run over top to pack down like sement. Now I have huge hunks of frozen mud for the horses to struggle with. At least with things being frozen we can add some screenings in the gateways. My two yearlings were so happy to have some soft/decent footing to play in. I feel rather guilty saying this, but I thought it was just ME! I have been complaining about the mud since the second week of October when we went to "too hot!" 85 degrees to "too cold" 30 degrees or less and rain, rain, rain! I usually love the month of October -not this year, and November was no great shakes, either. My babies have begun chewing the fence posts, and through research have found that early cold wet winters can prompt this! Well, I guess it is true, misery loves company. At least now I don't feel like I am the only one cranky about the weather this year.
The last week has been the best since ....well, since. We have beautiful snow! So much prettier than MUD! (I am intentionally ignoring the ice we had this morning!)

Honestly the Geofabric is probably the best money I have spent around here! I'm so impressed at the nice, firm ground I have around my bad areas.

Last year my gate area was just boot sucking soup. The horses hated it so they'd try and get through the muck as fast as they could and I'm trying to lead them in and out and hanging on for dear life as I'm suctioned in almost to my knees. I'm using much fewer curse words this year. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

A bit more work but we also tiled the area in front of the barn. We trenched a big branch pattern to a central trench which drains out into a ditch. We then covered it in pea gravel. It now stays solid - no muck at all. We're on a flood plain so we had to do something

Ok I finally found the OLN channel and saw a few horse competitions on it - so I surf by there all the time. They have an amazing amount of shows on hunting everything. Well yesterday there was a show on hunting in a swamp area. For some reason when heard the guide say "I will give you a tip" - I didn't change the channel. The tip was how not to get your boots sucked off.

Lets see if I can explain it. You get an old inner tube from a garage (car or tractor type). You cut a 1 inch strip - like slicing bread - so you have a heavy duty rubber band. You then put it around your ankle (over the boot). Pull the band and twist a loop off on the front of your ankle. Then slide that loop over the toe part of your boot. It will rest at the arch of the boot. In essence you have a figure eight around your ankle and foot (over the rubber boot).

The mud is definately back again - UGH. We have scratches on every white leg outside. They were just starting to clear up /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I am praying for things to freeze so we can put more wood chips down. I have decided the winter is going to be terrible and I might as well prepare for the worst /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Good Luck to everyone

I did a little bit of price shopping via the net but ended up going to the company my friend (who did the whole paddock) used. They were in Mississauga - Dixie & 401 area. I split the roll with someone and gave her the receipt but I'll be seeing her Tuesday and get the name and number of the company for you.

I did very little prep work because the ground, at that point, was pretty decent. For the most part just some small bumps and dips. I had to shovel some dirt out from right under the gate because with the 4-5" of screenings it would have ended up too high. I also had one big dip from where we had trenched to run electric and water lines out to the field. I put the gate dirt and a few shovel fulls of screenings to level the trench a bit.

Other than that I laid the fabric down overlapping it about a foot. I had read on that one site I posted to overlap because when the gravel truck drives over it the truck will pull it to a degree. I had some rocks & bricks holding it in place because this place is always so friggin windy! I spread the screenings about 2-3 feet past the edges of the fabric to lessen the odds of the horses catching an edge. Even though the babies dug at it like mad the first few days they haven't budged it at all. Right now, with all the thawing and rain, most of my field is like a swamp but the areas that I did are firm - even with ditzy mare pacing in front of the gate at dinnertime.

From friends that have been using it for a few years, they said that in time as the grass starts to grow through the screenings at the edges, it roots everything in place.

I tried wood chips the last place I lived and they worked well for a while and then ended up getting lost in the muck. Maybe you have to top them up every once in a while?

breezymeadow
Dec. 15, 2002, 09:44 PM
while that sounds like a good tip, if poor Breezymeadow had to rubberband herself with inner tubes the 17+ times a day she goes back & forth from the barn, I think she'd be in mental as well as physical therapy before long.

However, am definitely interested in this environmental fabric stuff.

currently I have about four pairs of shoes "Stationed" around my place. One pair of heavy duty muckers for going out into the fields (for hay, grain, and watering, bringing some horses in and out). then I have the "dirty" clogs staioned just at the edge of the grooming stall - the most conveneint entry way in and out of the barn. These I wear in the barn. Then I have the "cleaner" clogs you wear in the office etc etc.... It is an eternal battle to keep the mud outside. Praying for it to freeze for the next three months.

Because we are located so close to Atlanta, we have only 17 acres and 40 horses....needless to say, our turnout is very organized to give each horse at least 11 hours a day of turnout and play time....

BUT NOW....I am close to thinking that they may be better off INSIDE then out!

Scatches, cuts, blowouts! Soft feet and sore soles!

I am FED UP! Feel like putting rubber muck boots on them instead of shoes!!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I moved to Ontario this year from BC and well it is a bit mucky here but way better than BC (British Columbia). For those of you who do not know it rains in BC from October to May. No kidding!! About 6 days a week and maybe freezes 2-3 nights over the whole winter. The property out there is so expensive that it is normal to have 20-40 horses on 5-10 acres. What a muddy mess!!!! I wish I knew about this enviro.. mat then.. Now here in southern Ontario, vitually no rain. But when it does the ground is clay so it really sticks to your footwear. (A size 6 foot will end up a 12,,;;giggles;; by the time you get the horses all in)

I am going to look into the mat... Where can I find info on it??

I have come to love rock.

I wake up and hear the rain and think 'now I have rock' and my whole day gets better immediately.

I have solid gravel between the new barn built last year and my house - about 60 feet. I do not have the horses in that area on a regular basis. Their entrance is through the four stalls that face into the pasture itself and there is a 10' overhang entering the stalls that is packed rockdust that was wetted. It is like concrete and has held up very well with the traffic of seven horses on a continual basis.

Heaven HAS to be rock..... for so many years I slogged thru horrible mud in the various places I had kept the horses. I will tell the mud story in a spearate post. I like the sound of the geofabric and will try to find it in my area. Thanks. Pam

My son was eight. He was playing near the barn while I was feeding. I was tired from sloggin thru the mud, and he was piddling. I told him to come on, I was done. He didn't move. I got cranky, then saw the look on his face - "Mom", he said, "I can't move!" looking a little panicked. I trudged back thru the mud to get him, in the process of getting him unstuck, we BOTH fell in the mud. It was hilarious after a while and we both laughed....the real problem was that I had my husband's car - so now I was the panicky one. He hated even one horse hair in his car (WHAT was I thinking???) . Fortunately there turned out to be old newspapers in his trunk. I papered the car, and he was none the wiser. My son and I still talk about that day and laugh. I truly hate dealing with mud, tho.

You guys don't KNOW about mud til you've been here - I don't think it EVER dries up, either! That's why Irish horses are SO good in the rain and slop, and really hate (or perhaps they actually LOVE, I'm not sure) California!!!

I wear "PIG BOOTS" - they are the knee high TINGLEY pull on boots that you buy in the US farm stores - you can wear them over the shoes of your choice - or even your paddock boots or VOGELS http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - since they are knee high, they can also be used to walk XC courses... And it is really hard to walk out of them - you notice before you come out all the way!!

I wear my Dansko clog under them, and most of the time leave the clogs in them when I come take them off in my kitchen (no mud room, unfortunately).

Great things to have!!

At least in Ireland, we don't have the hard freeze to go with the mud!

OK I HAVE TO RANT http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Forget the mud now we are living on the surface of the moon, the mud pits have frozen to sharp points, the horses can barely walk.

Everything is frozen http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif What may I ask is SOOOOOOOOOOOO difficult about knowing how to drain a hose??!!! I can not for the life of me seem to exsplain it to the barn helper--he just loves to freeze up my entire system, by leaving the full hose hooked to they hydrant. Now I just got back from a hellish dental visit and of course had to feed/water the horses. But watering is a little hard when its ICE, so it took me over an hour just to do the lower barn then I went to the mare barn WHAT A NIGHTMARE not only was everything again FROZEN but my barn guy has been filling the buckets and not de icing them so I have 50 pound solid blocks of ice in each bucket--go to break the ice out of the buckets and that takes about 10 mins each, then on the last bucket the darn thing bounces instead of the ice breaking, wacks me in the leg and smashes my foot http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif so now I have a goose egg on my leg and black toe nails and my whole side of my face is swollen and killing me (from my fun vist to the dentist) I don't know but the mud is looking pretty good right now http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

OK I feel a tad better getting that off my chest, now back out to struggle around getting the mares in....

Oh Liz - I feel for you! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Everything is frozen at my place as well. We had to water the horses with buckets out of the sink - it took FOREVER!

At least my local tree guy dropped off two loads of wood chips - somthing to put over the frozen chunks of mud. That will be my project tomorrow - after everyone gets their morning "hot tea". I have one mare that waits by her tub for me to pour the blazing hot water in - it melts the ice and ends up slightly warm for her to drink.

Ive gotta say that the cow carpet stuff Nikita put down is the best stuff going! Even when its soupy and goopy mud, the stuff is firm enough for all the horses to walk on and play on, and it doesnt bunch, nor does any of the mud come through the carpet or the screenings. Plus, when the freeze does come, it freezes flat.

What Nikita had left owner, my barn owner has bought and come spring, our paddocks will been done as well.

They use it in Parks and Rec departments for heavily travelled areas, and they also say you can drive heavy equipment across it in the muckiest of weather and the carpet will dissipate its weight across its entire surface.

Cow farmers have used it the most, around their feed and water areas with the heaviest traffic, to keep the areas dry and habitable for humans and cows!

It is also the cheapest, by far, of any product we could find, so it really is a win/win situation!

Boy, I'm so glad I invested in automatic waters in every single stall and paddock on my place. I have 17 of them!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I forget that horses actually drink water! I do have one paddock that needs the heater replaced, so I am carrying a bucket out several times a day for Billionair. Luckily it is only one horse in the paddock, so I just rotate one bucket, let the other thaw in the tack room and then switch buckets. I do remember the days of beating ice out, running electrical cords and buying heaters every single year...they only seem to last a year and then they are burn out and done. The ruts are unbelievable!!! I have two mares with swollen ankles from walking across the ruts. And of course they are the two due the beginning of March, so they are huge as houses right now. I feel so bad for them, with those HUGE bellies going across the ruts.
My rant for the night is I just got back from showing homes to a new client who insisted on seeing 2 houses tonight in the dam snow. He says, well it is not snowing here...well, I"m an hour away and it was snowing when I left at 5:30 to meet him. By the time I got home, I passed two wrecks on RT 9, the road I live off of. But, I am thankful, I made it home with no problems. Lizard, hope your swollen face is feeling better tomorrow.

Liz, You Poor Thing!!!

You need a member title/signature line like someone else on the BB does (I can't remember who it is): "Drain the hose or I'll have to kill you." Even Mr. Breezymeadow (the farm "Gunga Din") got a laugh over that one.

I am sitting here finishing up my coffee & getting ready to brave the elements & feed/water the gang here, & from what I'm hearing on the radio re: single-digit temps & from what I can see out the window, it is NOT going to be pretty. Me bundled up in my "Randy/Christmas Story" snow gear sledgehammering ice out of the buckets & troughs, dragging the stupid hose into the basement & trying to hook up the hot water, testy horses just DIEING to go out & injure themselves, lunar moonscape now evilly hidden under slippery pristine white. . . . well - today the mud isnt there any more, with the high winds, we kept looking for Dorothy and Toto to fly by!
And we are fitting everyone for ice skates and teaching them the basics of staying balanced on blades!
The mud and snow has turned to sheer ice, so the horses will have their choice of skating on the clear ice or the brown ice.

Sigh ... http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif

I KNOW it could be worse. I know we could be on the east coast where they have been buried under 10-15 feet of snow and have high winds and everything, but it still isnt fair that those California people keeping making those nasty warm weather jokes with us ...

The forecast for our area is rain from Friday afternoon through Monday. I am so sick of mud! I have that awful red clay mud too. I guess I'll have to keep everyone in at night and have 4 stalls to clean as well and a weekend of indoor activities to look forward to.

I don't know how I'll ever get ready for the spring shows if I can't ever ride! UGH!

Well, there is mud, and then there is Mud, and then there is MUD. We have been lucky enough to have all 3 kinds in the last 24 hours.

The kind I hate the most, is the 9" deep mud that freezes just enough on top to "almost" support the whole horse's body weight as long as they don't breathe. Then with out warning, it begins to collapse at every step like a frozen ice pond. When turning out, they panic, spin, and launch themselves back over top of you to get back out of the field. Good luck trying to convince them to go back out.

I have been sick of this Winter since the middle of November.

Speaking of insects and diseases, would you believe I pulled a tick off of one of my dogs the other day? It had just gone down to 10 F a week before but we had warmed up for a day or so which I guess brought out the bugs. It was a full grown brown dog tick. I wouldn't count on this winter killing mosquitos and WNV.

Nope, this winter has not been cold enough for long enough to kill a good many of the bugs http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif We haven't had one of those winters in a long long time. Besides, with WNV, it's in the birds (crows mostly around here) and as soon as the Skeeters come out again, they'll start biting the birds and we'll start all over http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Not sure anyone really wants this mud. Horses walk and every 3rd leg that goes down shoots 2' in some direction whether that's the direction the leg is really intended to go. They are up to their ankles in mud, and heaven forbid boss hoss tries to make bottom of the pecking order (botpo) move - boss hoss gets really pissed that botpo doesn't move fast enough, botpo panics because he CAN'T move fast enough, so botpo either gets nailed, or botpo leaves shoes behind never to be seen again, or poor botpo strains tendons. Or all 3 http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Sometimes I really do envy those up North with frozen ground and snow cover :\

OMG! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif This morning I looked out my kitchen window at my fish pond with a water fall that was working last night...this morning, there was no pond in site or a waterfall. I know my fish need the water moving for oxygen so I ran out and started digging at my pond and under the 4 feet of snow (como of snow fall and snow drifting off the barn in the corner) there was the waterfall still running under all the snow. I just dug enough so there is oxygen getting to the water fall. I hope my fishies are OK. The horses seem fine this morning. When I put Gold Card, out he runs, rears up and bounces around like a little kid in snow. I'd say from his expressions, he loves going out in it after being in last night. Billionair seems less thrilled about the ideal of going out for the day! I wish I knew how to pull the photos off my camera to post some. The horses had such long ice sickles last night, that as they walked, they clanked together and made beautiful music. This morning all the ici slickles are gone now. None of them are shaking or seem unhappy in anyway. I think we are the whimps here and they are fine. I know Spot and Nikita are laughing at us, they deal with this all winter long. Spot, do you guys get like 2 feet at a time or is it small 6 inch storms that just pile up over time? I think our problem is it all comes at once. We have a major interstate 81 blocked with 100 plus cars since last night and the people are still trapped there. They had to finally call the news in Wash, DC to get any attention. The state police claim no one out of 100 cars called.....I don't think so!!! They are just now checking on the people and sending the police and rescue there after 12 hours and the news calling and requesting help for the people. Plus, I just heard about a barn that collapsed with horses in it in Poolesville, MD. They have rescue people there now. They reported the horses were fine, just trapped and they need to cut them out. That must be a mess.

I'm glad to hear you folks up there in the worst of this snow are doing OK. Barns collapsing are no joke. In the winter of 98-99 in Northern New York, (when I lived there) we had some 30 barns go down due to a series of exceptionally heavy snowfalls in January. Like 5-6 feet I think it was. Mostly they were the newer dairy barns but they lost a few horse barns too. We helped shovel the roof off where our horses were boarded. If you have a metal roof, you can drag a hose up there and run the water from the peak and wet just the bottom layer and hopefully it will slide off. This worked for a friend up in NY that winter. Be careful not to make it all wet or you could collapse the roof with the additional weight.

Liz, If the snow gets much higher, your horses are just going to walk over the tops of the fences. Nice pics especially the pony. Very cute!

JB, I can't believe we still have power this morning after the December storm I had little hope. We have about 2-3 inches of sleet and it's frozen to a hard crust. I did put the horses out and they are doing OK on it. I hope your logs did OK last night. I am not looking forward to my 40 minute commute to RTP in the morning to go to work. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif That should be interesting.

We are actually in a decent area of our province. We are on the "lee" side of the lake which translates to less snow (yeah!).
North and east of us (where Freehold is) and west (where GGold and Quinn are) and even a bit to the west of us where Fred is, they get it a lot worse than we do.
We are in the soft fruit zone, where peaches, plums and grapes are grown. The climate is more temperate, spring comes 2 weeks earlier than in the rest of the province and fall 2 weeks later.

Buffalo, NYK (which is only about 40-50 minutes east of us) is on the WRONG side of the lake! Those poor buggers will get whacked with *foots* of snow on a regular basis!

Where we had our farm before, we were DEFINATELY in the wrong area! Waist deep snow getting to and from the barn - not nice at all!

Good luck everyone and hope your fishies are okay too Norsire!

Yeah,

He was always very conscious of any footing, and would only stay on his pre-packed trails. At one point, you couldn't see the fence at all, but he still only stayed on his trails to the trough and whatnot. That pic was taken from the backdoor of my garage - his paddock opened from his private barn, and the others' barn was off to the left a bit - all stalls opened out and were left open unless we had bad winds. That way, shoveling "could" be done when it was "convenient" (constantly).

I have been laughing (and agonizing!) at this thread since last winter.

My farm stinks! I've never had a stinky farm. It's always been pristine and I love it that way.

But, man, this mud, rain, more mud, on top of all the manure left over from the winter out in the pastures is just disgusting.

Has anyone been able to chain-drag their fields since last November??? I've been trying to have my older fencing replaced since last year to no avail. It will have probably fallen down by the time they can get to it.

The farm feels like it's been wearing dirty underwear!

But the flowers in the garden look just gorgeous, so I stare at it every day and try not to look "out yonder".

Good Lord - what a morning. It's windy & raining buckets - BUCKETS I TELL YOU!!!

My barn aisle is now halfway underwater. Tried to construct some sort of straw/mud "berm" to no avail. Stalls are damp, dark, & revolting, but at least I was able to put down a nice dry fresh new bale in the mare/foal stall. Will have to wait until a lull in the wet so I can throw someone outside (no one will go out now), & try to get stalls somewhat presentable.

Like I said, when I started this thread last FALL, I am raising hogs and not horses anymore. My individual feed pens along my fence, smell just like a hog lot. I have 16x16 pens with gates on them so the horses can go in and eat along the fence without the old switch around routine and feed them all seperately without bring them in. And let me tell you when you drive up my driveway right next to them, you would swear you were entering a hog farm not a horse farm. This is just unbelievable! The farmers are going nuts with NO hay cut and it is now JUNE 20th!!! YIKES!! We are going to be paying through the nose for hay this year. I've had people beg me to sell them a few bales and I just can't as I have enought to get me, until we can cut more hay this year. This SUCKSSSS the big one! I am listening to the rain, just beat down on the skylights now. Oh, well I must go out in it to my office anyway.

I desperately want to redo my back fields, which were swamps all winter and now I can see grass about a foot and a half high coming up (which I want) but first I needed to pulverize the whole field (it is full of ruts) so all that grass is going to get wasted.
M
My horses are only getting out for a couple hours/day in our two front pastures, when it's not actively raining.... thank god we redid them last October before this started!

I am SOOOO glad I signed that year-long contract for guaranteed alfalfa delivery at $240/ton. It is starting to feel cheap, NOBODY is getting in hay this spring!

These are the days that truly test our love of horses. I could have never gotten through the winter, if I had known the summer would be like this. I have worn out multiple pairs of boots. Tired of brown wet socks!!

In addition, I was so sick for so much of the winter (unusual for me). Dragging hay on a tarp uphill through 2 feet of snow with a temperature of 102 is certainly a challenge. Now, this spring I am pregnant and starting to feel the easy fatigue and added bulk of my midsection. Trudging through the mud is disgusting and difficult.

Now I have 3 horses with swollen legs, presumably with fungal or bacterial irritation. I have been dipping and soaking feet when the horses come in. Started two on antibiotics.

The only thing that has kept me sane is my saint of a husband. He doesn't even really know anything about horses, but he is always willing to help. He offers to carry grain up to the one horse that stays on pasture, just so I don't have to trudge up that long hill. He also takes out my wheelbarrows while I clean stalls. THANK you out there to all you non horsey husbands that are willing to help!

Yes - kudos to all of our non-horsey, but helpful husbands. Mine was out there this morning shoveling mud away from the doorways & trying to coax our 2-year old colt that yes, he really could make it thru the muck out to the grassy field. Hubby also does the wheelbarrow dumps for me & even has his very own pitchfork for helping with stalls. Am not even pregnant - just physically & mentally challenged! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

As I look out the window here, I see that it is raining AGAIN, so guess while the 2-year old is out, will play musical stalls with the others so that I can do stalls. My QH will go out in the mud/rain, if absolutely forced, buy my 2-year old filly just stands her ground - to the point of almost sitting down dog-like - rather than go out in inclement footing/weather. What a prima donna.

Do you guys realized I started this tread last Nov.2002!!!! And it is still raining non stop. Hay making has been a real challange this year. Lots of hay once you could cut it and alot of ruined hay from the dam rain. As one guy put it, July this year was 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cutting all in one cutting!! We have had down pours the last 3 nights in a row. I have filled in my feed pens with new dirt and it is now disappearing. If, this winter is like last year we are domed!!! I should start building an arck and load up! The grass has been very plentyful this year, so hay feeding should start much later this year...that is the only good thing. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The problem you are describing Fairview is the hay on top is too dry and over done, but the lush green grass is below and you are baling old over cured hay with the lush ready new hay, that is why we are calling it 1,2 and 3 in one cutting and it is a mess.

I was not about to try and drag his 17 hand butt up to the barn for 2 cups of grain, just to have him rip my arm off. Poor old guy spooks if the grass moves the wrong way. Gotta love big ole TB's!

Yes Liz, I will not complain about my muddy areas around the gates and entrance to new barn any more!!! I don't have it any where close to how bad you have it!

Supposed to rain all day today though! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif So much for getting a lot of riding done this week!

I have learned to utterly HATE MUD!!!!! This past spring, it rained so much that my sacrifice lot was slop - unfortunately, every time it started to dry out, it would rain again. I don't even let the horses in there now because the mud is about 6-7 inches deep in front of the shelter. I am so sick of rain I could scream. Mud Ponies Clique anyone?

Well, that's just jolly wonderful. I was taking a peek at this thread, and now I have the Hippopotamus Song running through my head, and I have this sinking feeling it's going to be with me for a while. For whoever wrote the parody, THANKS A HEAP!!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Oh, & just in case you're not satisfied with all the mud, just heard that we are to expect possibly heavy snow squalls tonight. No accumulation - just a teaser for all the good things to come in the next few months. . . . http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Too far south in VA for snow here, but I have had rain blowing in every direction, only when I have to be out side of course!! As soon as I come in, it stops! Imagine that! Just found the new barn, on the high side stall has had water running into it since the water is pooling (no where else to go since the ground is saturated) right by it. Guess I will be doing some digging tommorow. Thanks goodness I don't have to put any one in that stall!

Well, now I've really had it. 9 Yes, 9! weeks of rain, 2 days of sun, and now, 2' of snow, freezing temp. and of course the mud still isn't frozen, so you sink down through the snow, and get stuck in the mud, while trying not to get blown over in the gusting wind. Isn't there another planet we can move to?

Oh boy, I could never live so far north as some place like Canada! Too freaking cold for me!
Looks like we may get our first taste of snow this weekend, down here in southern VA. I was just out side working in a t-shirt this week! If it ever really becomes winter around here, we are all gonna be in for a shock!

And of course snow always seems to lead to more mud!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Well, just picture this. Major snowstorm on Monday. Roads closed. Horizontal snow. No power. Temp dropped from + 10f to -20f. Now, we have 18" of snow, plus drifting, and of course, now the mud is nicely insulated, so it's not freezing. So, you plow through snow that is higher than your 20lb. boots, and sink into another foot of thick, oozing mud. I want to run away from home, and move to where all the world is paved.

DAMMMMMMMM http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif We had about 5 inches on flat surfaces, and 6 1/4 inches in the grassy areas....and it is suppose to have stopped, but I'll be darn if I don't see HUGE flakes still coming down now. Then, it is suppose to start up a NEW storm tonight. Well, atleast I can have fun on the snow mobile tonight!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey all you folks in Colorado (or Arizona, or New Mexico...). Do you want some of our rain for some of your drought???? Seriously...I'm from Colorado originally and I'm beginning to think wistfully of those bare dry pastures. Peanut's abcesses would sure appreciate them, too. I need to buy stock in duct tape.

Well all my snow/ice has melted, leaving "boot sucking off mud" just about every where! Tonight we could get an inch or two, but it looks like it is gonna go north of us.

SO where is it that I can find that Ag Fabric again???? Of course it may be too late to get it down for this year, but better late then never!

We have gumbo (prairie soil) here down south. When it rains, it turns into this thick mud that pulls shoes off. Picking feet out is a chore and when it dries, it's like concrete.
