View Full Version : Silent auction for Baby Aiden?
Erin
Oct. 9, 2002, 07:30 PM
Hey folks,
"Fred" (aka Gail, owner of A Fine Romance) posted about this earlier, but I wanted to bring it back up again and see if there was any interest.
If you've been following the threads on Off Course, you know about this already... but a BBer named RolexH has a baby boy with a very serious liver disease, and he needs a transplant. A fund has been set up in his name, and I've been collecting donations from COTHers for it... so far, we have over $2,500. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Fred has also donated a breeding to A Fine Romance to be offered through a silent auction, with the winning bid being paid to the American Liver Foundation (through which Aiden's fund is set up).
Since it's for a charitable cause, I told Fred we could go ahead and organize it through the BB.
Would any of the rest of you be interested in donating a breeding? What Fred and I have discussed is having a minimum bid of $500 (to the ALF), and again, the auction would be silent. I would just collect the bids and notify the winners.
If anyone else is interested, please email me at COTHCatHerder@yahoo.com. Thanks! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
(And for more info on Aiden, see some of the threads on Off Course... )

Whoo-hoo! Thanks Liz, and thanks Darlyn! We now have SIX donated breedings! How cool! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I'll try to get the ball rolling on this next week. I think what we'll do is start the bidding for each stallion at 50% of the normal stud fee OR $500. (Owner's choice.) Or whatever works for everyone. I'm not all that up to speed on the breeding stuff, so you guys just let me know what will work for you. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
What I'll really need help with is getting the word out about this... so once the details are sorted out, even if you can't donate a breeding, you can pitch in in that regard. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Thanks again, everybody... you guys are great. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey Erin... I can throw a flyer together once you get all the info compiled. But we can put all the stallions on it with pics & info... plus what it is for and contact info for placing bids. The flyer can then be made into a .pdf (adobe acrobat) format and we can put the word out with tacking those up (then either downloaded by others who want a copy or we can email a copy out to them). It's what I do for a living (create ads)... so it'd be a breeze to throw something together for the silent auction here at COTH! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I will donate a live cover breeding to my TB stallion Prince Quick....(Pleasant Colony grandson)
I had the pleasure of meeting baby Aiden's family last week.
Life has such a funny way fo bringing people together. About three months ago I came across a post about Aiden....the pictures were a part of my memory forever....and when his mom walked into my kitchen, my heart froze in place....
I hope that the pictures are posted soon of the baby Aiden and Luckyduck.
That will be a day I will remember forever!

Who else out there with stallions is willing to donate a breeding for Baby Aiden?
I can think of several farms with more than one stallion, and individuals with just one stallion, who regularily converse on this board who should be in a position to donate a breeding?!
Come on - what better way to get some free pubilicity and advertising for your stallion and farm and support a super cause than this one?!

So, stallion owners, expect an email from me in the next day or two to work out the details.
Once we get this set up, I'm hoping that the rest of the gang here can lend some help in getting the word out. I'll set up some information online and we'll have some kind of printable flyer... if the rest of y'all can help spread the word, that would be great! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So many stallion owners that I admit I forgot about! Good for you!
I'm assuming our regular stallion owner posters - Darkhorse, Freehold, Norsire, GGold, Fred, Spot, HSFH - have contributed?
I can see if my pal will donate a breeding for her RID stallion.

Spot, Pintofoal, Darlyn, HFSH,Lucky Duck, Ghazzu , and Mirrabook for joining in and Robby and Medievalist for your generous offers of help.
That's 8 or 9 stallions so far. WONDERFUL!! that will help to buy a lot of medicine for this little baby.
Just to clarify, this will be a "SILENT" auction - so the stallions are not competing in anyway whatsoever against one another. And the stallions will not be devalued in any way. No one except the successful bidder (and Erin and the stallion owner) will know the final bid amount.
This BB and its members have been very generous to me, and I am proud and honoured to be able to give something back, as I am sure the other participating stallion owners are too.

I just remembered - GW Ranch - Heike - would you be good enough to donate a breeding to one of your nice stallions too?
Still a WHOLE bunch of stallion owners we havent heard from yet ...
Come on - COTH is excellent about allowing us to come on here and not quite advertise our stallions (!), but extoll their virtues so that word gets out about them. Repay the favor and contribute to this cause.
What is a little bit of semen from your stallions? As soon as they ejaculate, there is LOTS more where that came from!
You will still get your regular collection and/or boarding fees - you are simply donating "Sperm For A Good Cause".
I don't know Aiden at all, nor do I know his parents, but I do know in a little way, I can help towards once heck of a good cause and think how good you'd all feel if by donating, you actually made a difference.

I was going to sit down tomorrow night and try to sort all the details of this out, but what the hey, let's just start now. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I think Darlyn suggested starting the bidding at half of the stallion's usual fee. So I'll leave it up to each of you... either $500 or half the normal fee.
Now, what I need from each stallion owner is what fees would/would not be included. (Remember, I own geldings and am NOT conversant in all the breeding stuff, so spell everything out for me, please! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )
Also, I'll need a photo and some text about your boy, or a link to a webpage. I'll put together a webpage with info about Aiden and short blurbs/pix of all the stallions... and the kind soul who volunteered earlier (whose name escapes me!) will hopefully be able to do up a flier.
As Fred mentioned, it will be a silent auction. I'm hoping that the winning bidder's check can just be made out to the American Liver Foundation -- but I need to work out the details with the ALF so that they can tell me when the checks clear, so you guys will know it's OK to send semen.
Anything else that needs to be decided?
Where I'll really need help is just in spreading the word about this. Hopefully everyone who reads the forum can plaster the link around and tell everyone they know. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I think most of you have posted or emailed me the URL's for your stallions, but if not, or if you have specific information you want included, just email it to me. And if there's a particular photo you want me to use, let me know that too. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Thanks again everyone. You guys are really awesome for stepping up and chipping in! I'll have to remember this moment the next time one of the really nasty fights starts and I want to disband the breeding forum altogether. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
BTW, I'm mailing off checks totalling $2810 to the ALF tomorrow, all from COTH posters. I'm excited to see what the grand total will be after this leg of the fundraising drive. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I know we have a different health care system up here in Canada than you do in the US.
Could the money raised go to better use to them personally, rather than to the Liver Foundation?

after thanking <everyone> - I/we had forgotten to thank ERIN!!
This is a whole lot of work for her, and it could not happen without her considerable time, abilities and efforts.
Thanks too to the COTH for giving us the (ahem) forum to provide this.
I'm thinking that we possibly have enough stallions participating. Twelve is an excellent number and we should be able to raise a whopping amount of $$$.
The other stallion owners who have not joined in must be well aware of what we are doing. Their silence I think is their anwer. We would love to have them participate, and it is a truly wonderful cause, but they must have their reasons for not wanting to donate a breeding.
So instead, why don't we just close the stallion list off today so that we can get going with the organization!
Let's Go!

I have just posted another topic asking any stallion owners that perhaps had not been reading this thread, to please consider donating.
So far - we have such a diverse group of stallions(from hunter champions, to Welsh stallions, Arab stallions, Warmbloods and - saving the best to last /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - colored TB stallions!) - we certainly could use a few more in each of the different types.
So - no - I would ask Erin to perhaps close it by the end of this week. That would give a lot more stallion owners the opportunity to participate.
Surely there are more than 12 mare owners out there that would be interested in our stallions???

I had no idea what was going on until today! Of course I will donated a breeding to one of my stallions, by AI only. Also, in going through all the post, for everyone who does not own a stallion, they could still donate in the form of a small check. I think anyone on these boards, could certainly send $10.00...imagine if everyone who does not own a stallion or mare owners who don't buy a breeding sent 10.00 it would really add up to alot. I think alot of people think, like I did, oh I don't have alot of money, so I can be of no help. I think all can add to the pot for the final goal!!! I'm sure Rolex has insurance, so the American Liver Fund sounds like a great idea, so he gets his new liver. Just a suggestion, send an e-mail to all the stallion owners who you have named, who may not have read the thread like me. I bet alot have not read the thread yet!!! They would probably be happy to donate if they only knew! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wow, thanks guys! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Bluemoonfarm, I don't see why we can't have girls in the auction too. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Of course, I have absolutely no idea what would be involved with that, but I'm sure we can figure something out!
Spot, I know Aiden's family does have very good insurance. But the American Liver Foundation suggested that they set about raising about $250,000 for Aiden's lifetime care, and they set up the fund that we contribute to. (This way, everyone knows the situation is "legit," that the donations are being handled responsibly, AND they are tax-deductible!)
The fund is new (in fact, I think our fundraising efforts were the first /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ), but I think once it gets going, the idea is that the funds in it can be used for those out-of-pocket expenses, stuff insurance doesn't cover, co-pays, and all that kind of stuff.
So unless Aiden's mom tells me something different, I think we're best off sending donations to the ALF. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I'm going to try to get everything organized and get a webpage set up this weekend, and hopefully next week we can start promoting the auction. So I guess we can keep accepting new stallions up until the auction is ready to go. The more, the merrier, I say. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
And thanks again to everyone who's taking part, and to Fred for thinking up the idea in the first place. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bless your heart Norsire!
You were actually the next email I was going to send - just sent one to GGold and you beat me to it!
Thanks a bunch - that is FABULOUS news!
Including your stallion (which one will it be - do you know yet?) we have got some simply outstanding stallions available that will appeal to such a wide diversity of mare owners.
And excellent suggestion about the monetary donation as well as emailing the other stallion owners I have kindly named on this thread ...
thanks again -that is great!
Tawna24 - yes - by all means we'd love to have him if you feel he will be ready willing and able next year!
There are so many of us who love the unusually colored dilute stallions - he'd be such a lovely cross on a TB mare!
Thank you so much - I think I can speak for all of us when I say - "Yes - we'd definately love tohave him included!"

Boy I'd missed this one. I hate reading sad stories, so I hadn't been reading the baby Aiden stuff - too heartbreaking /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Anyways, I'd be glad to offer my two boys. There is F.E. Copper Top, a 1998 approved Canadian Sport Horse stallion. He is unproven under saddle as yet, but will be competing in the five-year-old FEI dressage classes next season, and might do some hunter classes too, depending on how his training over the winter goes. He does have four babies on the ground so far (one yearling three current babies) and we are expecting up to nine next year (assuming everyone carries). Copper is about 16.3hh now, and will probably hit 17hh when finished growing. The other is El Ghazi Legacy, a 1998 Arabian (polish lines) stallion. He is not yet going under saddle (I start my guys late), but will be competing in the Arab shows next year. He'd cross very well to heavier warmbloods (I plan to warmblood approve him, but am waiting until he has some performance record) or to draft cross mare. I plan to have him show in dressage as he is a superb mover. He should finish 15hh (he's about 14.3hh now). Information on both can be found on my web site. I've emailed Erin about them /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hope this helps.

Tawna24 - if he is like any other stallion, Im sure he'll be "up for it" just fine now, let alone next year!
Erin wants a blurb on your stallion, a picture you would like used, a link to your web site, and any additional costs that will apply. Like - if it is Live Cover, what forms you would need completed, what your daily board rate is, etc.
If AI, then what your standard collection fees would be, any additional costs to get it to the airport or courier station, costs for the Equitainer, etc

Erin- do you think COTH would donate a one page ad of all the stallions donating breedings with pics of baby Aiden and a short story about the silent auction and its purpose??
That would be a WONDERFUL way to get the word out, would increase the oportunity of bids for the "non-computer" savy readers, thusly (hopefully) increasing the bids to bring in more money.
Who could we aproach at the magazine about this, or has it already been done? (Accepted/rejected? This may already be in the works, and I am just REALLY behind the loop and do not even know about it:)
A color ad would be nice too:) Just a thought... I am trying to help. We still have enought time to put something together for the stallion issue, and as we all know- stallion auctions draw a TON of people - ESPECIALLY for sure a good cause as sweet little baby Aiden!!

Holy cow... did I really say the more the merrier? Oh dear! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
OK, an update on the details...
This will be a silent auction. Starting bids will be either $500 or 50% of the usual fee -- it's the stallion owner's choice.
I am trying to work it out so that winning bidders will make the check for the amount of their bid out to the American Liver Foundation... I just need to find a contact at ALF who can let me know when the checks clear, so I can then give the stallion owners the green light to proceed.
Other than that, I figure we'll leave everything up to each individual stallion owner. You just let me know what fees the winner will be responsible for and if you have any other caveats.
(Please keep in mind that I am NOT involved in breeding in any way, so I'm totally winging it here, and counting on you guys for guidance and the details! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
Now... some more good news. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Robby Johnson has been given the go-ahead to write an article for the COTH about the auction. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The article will run in January.
Do we want to wait to close the auction until after the article runs? I know it's a long way off, and as I am a breeding neophyte, I don't know if January vs. November would make a big difference.
I'm all for doing this in the way that YOU guys want it to be done, so give me feedback and let me know what you think!
And a million thanks to everyone who has chimed in here with a donated breeding. I'm totally floored by this. You guys are really great. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I will update the list of stallions later on today, hopefully. (Gotta go do some work for my real job now.)
Oh, and DH, I could definitely use assistance with graphics... text and HTML I can handle, but the visual arts ain't exactly my thing. So I will definitely get in touch with you about that.
And if you guys do want to try to do an ad, we can certainly work on that... we already did it once for Cactuskate! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Although the article would also serve as a way to promote the auction. (If we decide not to wait til January, I might be able to write up a very short newsy thing for In The Country.)

I know Fred said somehting about donating Mr. Fred, but I have been so busy in an out of the hospital I never check any other forums. Can you imagine my surprise when I get an email from Robby saying that COTH is going to do an article on my baby and those who are donating their stallion!?! I was shocked.
I was reading this thread and started out with my eyes buldging then they began to fill with tears. I just can't beleive it. Aiden is so lucky. Any parent would just cry knowing so many love their child. Since he was born I have tried so hard to keep postive and stay strong. I just know he will live and do well. I sometimes turn off the emotions. I sort of just float. But you reminded me just what a special baby and special group of people that are here at COTH. God Bless you so much. I can't wait to get off the pc and call my husband. He will be so shocked.
Thank you everyone. Thank you for praying and thank you for this huge gift.

Hey Erin: From my own standpoint, I would think it would be fine to leave the bids open until after the article is published. In fact, if the article comes out in January, you may want to publish an early-mid February closing date (how about the 14th - Valentine's Day - the AWS also uses 2/14 for their bid closing date). January-February is the normal bid closing times for a number of auctions. Anyway, just a suggestion.
Again, thanks for your detailed information and efforts. We look forward to donating a breeding to such a worthy cause. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There is a wide range of stallions available from Live Cover to AI with fresh cooled, so frozen would be no problem at all. As long as the potential bidders are aware that they are bidding on frozen semen, there wouldnt be a problem.

If you don't know Palladio he is a son of the great Caletto I out of a Samber/L.Ronald (Ramiro) mare. Due to the limited breeding we have with ISR/OLDNA we will have to specify registration that is available for the resulting foal from this breeding...will that be a problem or will each stallion have it's own particulars listed?

And Crestline - Andrea its great to have you and Palladio on board as well!
If I may make a suggestion on behalf of poor, beleagured Erin - can you please email her the info on your stallion - name, height, age, color, performance history, breed registry, all of your farm info and web site/email info, if you are offering him Live Cover or AI and what additional charges will apply if the mare either boards at your farm, or if you are shipping semen.
Send Erin the picture of your stallion you want featured in the promo ads.
Is the first collection free - or will they be expected to pay for all collections and if so - how much?
What about container costs?
What are the limitations on collection days?
What breed registry will the foal will be eligible for?
What your particular Live Foal guarantee means - I think everyone might have a different stipulation in this area.
What other particulars and stipulations do you have for breeding to your stallion?
I think the more we spell all of this out for Erin, the less looking and guessing she will need to do and the easier and clearer it will be for all concerned.

I wish I had a stallion to donate a breeding for, just so that I could be a part of such a wonderful event.
Unfortunately, I have no stallion and I doubt anyone would be interested in an egg from my 3 yr. old, unshown, breeding stock APHA filly. She's priceless to me, but I'm realistic, LOL.
One thing I think you should consider adding is whether the breeding could be puchased for future use or must be this breeding season. Of course, you'd have to add that it would be the purchaser's risk as refunds can't be made.

I just had a baby boy in Sept. so the story about Aiden hit close to home...what a wonderful way that we can help out this precious child!
We will donate a breeding to our Elite Hanoverian stallion, Cabalito (also approved Oldenburg Verband).
He is a VERY fancy up and coming young hunter sire and his first foals have been outstanding. I checked with him and he would be glad to help out!

I'm sorry I was not following this thread before tonight when Spot put out the "calling all stallion owners" post.
Of course...I'd be honored to donate breedings to Boleem, Argosy and King's Camelot.
Someone can e-mail me for details for the particulars (AI stuff, etc.) on breeding. Just let me know what I can do.
This is terrific!

Thanks a bunch! What lovely stallions you both have!
This is truly amazing. What started out as Fred donating a breeding to "Fred", and then a couple other stallion owners jumping on as well, has escalated into probably one of the fanciest, most diverse and nicest offerings I have ever seen in a stallion auction.
Just when you think there are no more stallions left to be included, more generous owners step up and do so.
Poor Erin!
I think she envisioned a couple of stallions and a one page blurb somewhere and minimal time to put it all together. Now Robby is involved as chief interviewer and literary genius! And many others stepping up to help with the graphic layouts and web page designing.
I am impressed beyond words at what is unfolding!
And Lisa - little Aiden sure looks like a natural up there! But you gotta teach him to point those heels down! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Have you ever thought about approaching the Liver Foundation about making him the poster child for their organization? How could anyone resist after seeing him up there! That picture speaks 1000 words and may be just what they need to get fund raising projects off the ground!

"If I may make a suggestion on behalf of poor, beleagured Erin - can you please email her the info on your stallion - name, height, age, color, performance history, breed registry, all of your farm info and web site/email info, if you are offering him Live Cover or AI and what additional charges will apply if the mare either boards at your farm, or if you are shipping semen.
Send Erin the picture of your stallion you want featured in the promo ads."
"Is the first collection free - or will they be expected to pay for all collections and if so - how much?
"What about container costs?
What are the limitations on collection days?
What breed registry will the foal will be eligible for?
What your particular Live Foal guarantee means - I think everyone might have a different stipulation in this area.
What other particulars and stipulations do you have for breeding to your stallion?
I think the more we spell all of this out for Erin, the less looking and guessing she will need to do and the easier and clearer it will be for all concerned."
While a good bit of this information can be (and already has) been relayed to Erin, it's still the responsibility (and is imperative) that mare owners contact the individual stallion owner(s) (prior to bidding) with regard to their specific breeding contract and requirements, and if the mare owner desires a video of a particular stallion(s), so that nothing gets lost in the translation. The level of communication should be a two-way street, which minimizes chances of potential misunderstanding and will better provide for a more enjoyable, stress-free and positive relationship for all. I think it may be a bit more of a burden to Erin if she has to dissect all of the information for each and every stallion. Granted, much information can be provided; however, I believe it is most important to initiate and maintain an open line of communication between the mare and stallion owners - whether or not the breeding is donated.

I agree with Nikitta-
I wish I had a stallion so I could donate:) but not yet...
I would be happy to donate money to help with an ad in COTH for the auction. Will distribute flyers, help with any thing else that needs to be done (website, etc.).
Wish I had a mare I could bred, so many lovely stallions to choose from but unfortunately all my mares are too old or have proven they don't want to carry a baby:)

Spot - Thanks for your feedback. I've found through experience that the more clearly details are understood up front, the better chances for a smooth, pleasant and successful experience for all. I think by mare owners obtaining specific breeding contract and other pertinent information up front & before bidding on a particular stallion, this will greatly assist them in making a more informed decision. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Equine Connection does make a good point... I'll try to provide as much information as possible on the auction website, along with links back to each stallion's website (if they have one), but I'll also make sure that potential bidders contact the stallion owners before they make a bid. Then each stallion owner has the opportunity to make sure each bidder knows all the intricacies that will be involved.

Thanks to the others that have said they're willing to donate towards the ad. With 6800+ members of this board we should be able to get the money for a full page ad! I just want to let as many people as possible know about this auction so we can get the bids up and more money for Aiden.
Erin, before I do a separate post asking mare owners for donations towards the COTH ad, any suggestions for how to handle the money? Do you want people to send it to you with a note that it's to be put towards the ad or are we going to swamp you if we add one more thing to you?
Anybody have any suggestions about the best way to do it?

and not overload Erin (too many details/too many opportunities for misunderstanding)
What I would like to suggest is that we provide Erin with the basics:
a photo
a BRIEF description of the stallion, including breed, age, height, registries approved/licenced for
-normal stud fee
-link to web page if applicable
-indicate whether available by TS LC or FS
- whether it is LF
and conditions: ie mareowner responsible for lab/collection fees ($200) and shipping (for example)
for specific conditions and costs it is the responsibility of the mare owner to contact the stallion owner or agent before bidding. (this line is always included in any stallion service auction I have seen) this is to clarify any specific questions ie days of collection etc.
stallion owner contact #'s and/or email
does that sound agreeable to the other stallion owners?
I have a bidding form from the CSHA which was modelled on the form from the AHHA which I could fax to you Erin if you like.
also, if this isn't too confusing, usually mare owners may bid on more than one stallion (indicating the bid amount for each) If only ONE breeding is desired, the mare owner also indicates her order of preference should she be the winning bidder on both.

OK, Fred (or someone)... explain to me exactly how the bidding process should work. I was just going to have people email me their bids, but does it need to be something more "binding" than that? Like something with an actual signature?
If we need a form, I could set up an online version, but I don't know how "official" all this has to be... and if it would be better to have something physically mailed or faxed to me.
Fred, I'll send you an email with my fax number here at work so you can send me the form you have.

Oh, about the ad... while we certainly could do something like that, Robby tells me his article will actually be running in late November, I think? So that will go a long way in getting word out about the auction.
If you all want to do an ad, though, that's fine with me. We could probably do the same as with the Cactuskate ad, and have people send checks made out to me, and then I cash them and write one check to COTH. Or someone else could do the same thing... With your blessings, I'd be happy to donate the web space and set up a page to show off the auction studs at studbook.com I haven't maintained that site for a while--it hasn't been active, but the URL sure brings in the traffic and I have tons of space on my server. I can even set up a form for easy information and set up the site that way + email the form to Erin. If this is Okey Dokey with everyone I can set it up like the IRC stallion page ( http://www.coloredhorses.com/stallions.html ) have a small photo of each stallion, etc. Also I think it's been decided to have a silent auction, but if that changes to online bidding IRC used a great program that I could also set up for on-line bidding, then we wouldn't be at the mercy of Yahoo or Ebay, which as the Han people know was somewhat of a nightmare last year. Anyways, thoughts please

That sounds like a WONDERFUL suggestion/offering. I am sure that would take a TON of stress off of Erin!! She could collect the info and forward on to you for the site:)
Bidding through your suggestion sounds like it may run a bit smoother than yahoo or e-bay. Might be a bit more trackable and slightly more reliable/easier to oversee and weed out the "fake" bidders that don't follow through. Besides, doesn't e-bay have a thing about no "Live animals" or something like that? Yahoo might be different, and not be a problem. I know we aren't selling the stallions- but I still think it rides a fine line, and we wouldn't want to put all of the info up and have it get pulled for some reason or another. I think a privately run site (like yours, etc..) would be less "controlled" by a non-horsey moderator. (They might not think it's a "publically proper" auction, and place it into the "Horse pimping" file to be removed- if you know what I mean /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif What I am saying (Long whinded of course) is that I think it would be much easier to do it like you suggested. Therefore, making it easier on the bidders and in the end resulting in a large donation from the COTH group.

I know that it was very important to several stallion owners that this be a silent auction, as they didn't want their good deed to be "punished" by having their stallion go for a relatively low bid and having that amount be public knowledge.
But, if there's a way to automatically do the bidding and still have it be silent, that would probably be fine. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You can set up a Yahoo Auction, where we can follow the live bidding.
AHS has done it for several years. The key is to set it up correctly, and also to be SURE Yahoo is aware you are not selling horses, just breeding services (semen). AHS had a little trouble last year with that but it was clarified.
Bidders have to have a Yahoo account to bid, which is easy as they are free. All bidding then goes through that, or you can also have snail mail bidding too, with a note on the yahoo bidding saying that if the on-line bidder is outbid by mail... you get the idea.
But if Liz is willing to do hers, that'd be great too!
Sometimes the live bidding really gets people going (kinda like Ebay, you know).

Hrm. But this also means that everyone knows the final bid, right?
I really think the auction needs to stay silent. If there's a way to do that online that's not too much trouble, that'd be great... although it'd probably be just as easy for me to take email bids.
Question... in a silent auction, do you notify someone if their bid is exceeded? Would I need to list the current leading bidder for each horse or something? Or is it just "tough cookies" for a mare owner if they're outbid? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Another question (which I think Fairview Horse Center emailed to me, but I already closed my mail and don't quite remember)... does anyone have experience with stallion auctions being done for charity, and how they handle the payment? FHC's point was that if anything happened to the stallion and the owner wasn't able to fulfill the contract, how would the money be refunded if they check had been written to the ALF? Any suggestions for how to handle that?
Robby's article is going to run in late November, so how about opening bids the first week of December? Does that sound good to everyone? Any suggestions for how long the bids should be open for?

I`ve been thinking how this needs to work. Let`s say it`s live foal guarantee, and the stud fee purchaser has sent the money to our fund manager for Baby Aiden. Then her mare doesn`t get in foal, or gets in foal, but some months later slips, or eventually delivers a foal that doesn`t make it.
Now what? Does the money have to be sent back, as I assume must be the case, and if so, must our fund not keep a certain amount in escrow against such an eventuality?
What if we do this deal "no guarantee"? The bids would be lower, but we would know that all the money would be available for our cause.
I`m not advocating any specific way to do this, but unless we get some coordination, it could turn into a logistical nightmare. Why don`t we appoint a small committee, inc.Erin, Robbie, an attorney, etc. to come up with a plan. I`m sure we would all do whatever they would feel is in the best interests of our goal, which is maximum help for the family.
Any thoughts from people a lot smarter than me about logistical details?

Oct. 24, 2002, 03:08 PM
How about a free return for the next season if the breeding doesn't result in a live foal? That way the mare owner gets a second shot if something doesn't go right, Baby Aiden keeps the money, and that stallion owner has a definite deadline for how long they are working for.
I've bid and won a breeding in one of the warmblood auctions before. I think we were required to send in a check to the organization along with our bid. When the bidding was closed, the winning check was deposited and when it cleared the winner was notified and the other checks were returned. As a mare owner, I had checked out details of contract, shipping and collecting fees, etc., with the stallion owner in advance.
One question: will we be able to place bids so that if you don't win for Stallion A your bid can be considered for another Stallion you are interested in?
Say a one-mare breeder would love to breed to A Fine Romance, Loyal Pal or Happy Hour in that order. The mare owner wouldn't want to place multiple bids (only wants to win one breeding, not three). Can a bid be placed to cover all those stallions? In the above example, a bid of $1100 might be placed, and it would first go to the bidder's first choice, but if outbid on Fred then the bid would go to the second choice but if outbid on Loyal Pal would then go the the third wonderful choice, but if outbid there the bid would lose and be returned. Some people might only be interested in one specific stallion and only bid on that offering, but someone else might be happy with any of several of the fine choices.
Don't take life so seriously...it's not permanent.

It probably would be a good idea to have some sort of "general contract" made up for the general public to view and agree upon before making their bids. Then have this sent in along with their bids if via snail mail... so that all who bid are acknowledging to you (Erin or group in charge of this) that they are aware of the terms and conditions of the stallion auction. Make sense? Do we have any COTH members in the attorney field that would be willing to draw up a contract of this sort for the auction? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif:

My suggestion to Erin was to have a 2003 season, non-refundable clause, with an option to extend if the stallion is available for a LFG. Possibly offer a choice of a few stallions (if any of the owners are willing) as a "back-up" in case a winning bidder's #1 stallion is hurt and is no longer breedable. Even maybe offer choice of any stallions that do not receive a bid (there are always very nice stallions in every auction that for one reason or another don't??) If all bidders knew that "up front" it would be fair, and would not obligate the fund to refund money.
I would just want to protect our "fund" as much as possible. I personally would be happy to honor my normal live foal guarantee as long as my boy is able to breed, but what if he is not, for one reason or another the 2nd year? Refunding a "paid stud fee" is not a problem, but many stallion owners would not be able to refund a winning bid that they did not receive money.
I would also be quite happy to have a 2nd breeding from my stallion to be available as an "insurance policy" in case someone's winning stallion becomes unavailable.
Does that make any sense? (Sorry, it has been a long day, and my first foal by my young stalliuon left this afternoon for her new home) /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

She either ran the auction last new years or at least is involved with the organization which ran the auction (where I won my breeding to Rep /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )
'Course, the whole Cryostar discussion may have scared her off the board and/or auctions, but she's got real live experience doing it...
As I recall, to register to bid on their site, you had to give some realworld contact info, and probably there was a confirmation e-mail. There was also an Opt-In button you had to punch before bidding, promising that you really were good for the money.
Once I sent my money to the charity, they contacted Tamarack and let them know I had paid, I think.
How many owners want the bidding "sealed envelope" so to speak?? I definitely bid more than once in that auction, from seeing higher bids go on the boards - though I guess if I had just gotten an e-mail saying "You have been outbid" I would still have re-bid, without the bid amounts being so public.
Worth thinking carefully how long you want bidding to be open (aka how long some lucky catherder wants to sit glued to her computer, bombarded by e-mails...)

"I personally would be happy to honor my normal live foal guarantee as long as my boy is able to breed, but what if he is not, for one reason or another the 2nd year? "
I agree with Fairview, whenever I have donated breedings before (which has been a lot to various bred registries, good causes, etc.) I honor those breedings under my contract, which is a LFG for 4 years--no refunds, but the owner can switch mares, etc., if need be or if for some reason (Lord forbid) one of the stallions could not fulfill his duties we offer another. I treat those breedings the same as if they had bought it directly from me and it is governed by the same contract. I would think though a small escrow or a possible swap of stallions would be a good thing if for some reason a stallion cannot fulfill his duties under the owners stallion contract, especially if it has a refund clause. So I would guess a general concessus of what everyone's contracts clauses are concerning LFG would be in order.

is that we are all offering a live foal guarantee, and if the mare doesnt catch, slips, or the foal doesnt stand and nurse when born, the mare owner would have a return breeding privelege the following year only under the provision of the contract.
Once breeding season 2004 ends, and the mare still hasnt caught, then my obligation as stallion owner would be over and done with.
That is the way my breeding contract reads and that would be the provision and stipulation I would also make with this donated breeding.

My understanding as well is that this will be serviced under my normal breeding contract, whatever the donation garnered. Which, in addition to additional costs for either mare care or semen collection and shipment deposits, also provides for a normal 2 year LFG.

I think it is important to state that the winning bidder is bidding on a non refundable stud fee. This is a one time auction and once the money is all in, it will be sent off and gone. The stallion owner can not return it nor can the auction or RolexH return the money. My contract with the winning bidder for our stallion Navarone will be for a breeding live foal standing and nursing over 2 years.
Our previous stallion Aram died last year right in the middle of breeding season and I have to say, regardless of the contracts, it is a mess to deal with. If this should happen to one of us stallion owners donating, god forbid! then we certainly could not refund money that we never got.
I can't remember but I thought that there is no tax deduction advantages to the donation. Does anyone know?
As for my vote, I like the idea of doing the bidding online, but not so sure it is a good idea to make the bids public. I do like the idea that if people put in a bid they could be told if they are outbid, so they have a chance to put a higher one in. That way only the highest bidder would know what the highest bid is. Not sure this is possible. Whatever you all decide is fine by me.

What if we try to contact e-bay, yahoo or perhaps an online auction that e-bay has taken over? Perhaps one would be generous to offer a short time use of their resources? A click of a button on their part would make it "silent" and that way bidders would go through a registration check as well.
Do you think they would or is that just wishful thinking?

My husband and I are so amazed at all of this. So many people like Gail think we are so strong. Everyone asks us how do you do it? How can we NOT be strong? We have the strength of so many behind us. I imagine myself standing, and when I feel faint and begin to fall, I look to you guys. Your arms pull me back up, and your words quickly help me refocus. I rememer one time I was so sad and posted how I was afraid I was going to loose him. I was so afraid, and began to loose the strength. People posted to me things like, "Refocus, you have a task to do." "Keep strong". etc... It took only minutes and I was on my feet again. YOU GUYS DO THAT FOR US! Thank you. I thank God for those beautiful creatures, the amazing stallions that you are donating. It is so outstanding.
Sorry for running on and on. We really appreciate this. My whole family does.

I agree with FHC ... our two boys will have LFG with rebreed for the 2nd/3rd years if no live foal and would be prepared to have a 2nd breeding to one of the boys in case someone's stallion could not fullfill the obligation.
In fact, in all our years of donating to various auctons, we have backed up another stallion in two separate years where the original stallion was unavailable for any number of reasons. More important to see the babies on the ground ... and the money raised for a worthwhile cause so, definitely there can be no refunds.
Cherham .... go back to page 6 and you will see a partial list of stallions ... after that you will have to just read the posts. I believe there are some not listed yet and Erin expects to have the full list up after the weekend.

If it is possible to show the current high bid (and we know it is - we have the technology /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ), it must be possible to show the current high bidder in lieu of th ehigh bid amount.
Perhaps a good compromise would be for every bidder to register with a username, and the bidding could show the name of the current high bidder along with when the bid was placed. For instance if I registered as "DMK" (how original) and I was bidding on a stallion (challenging, considering I have 3 geldings right now), I could see when my bid was topped. Obviously I wouldn't know how much, but if I raised my bid by $100 and still didn't become the top bidder, I know I would need to up it more. Conversely, if I raised it $300 and became top bidder, I wouldn't know if I overshot the mark by $299 or $1. That's the beauty of silent auctions. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hello-I am just back on tonight (see off course dell topic) and someone pointed out I was mentioned here, so I popped in to see what I could offer.
Yes, I was involved with the first ever stallion auction to benefit the CT Agricultural Education foundation. Last year being the first time, we had some Kinks to work out-including some very unforseen issues. however, we had an excellent group of donated stallions-which we were greatful for.
And by the way, I would like to apologize to anyone who had difficulties of any sort last year, I will be the first to admit that there were some glitches. However, the committee wanted to try again this year, so we carefully reviewed everything (and used it to learn from), so we have a whole new program (including electronic instant bidding). Hopefully there are no leftover hard feelings anywhere.
OK-on to the subject at hand:
After ending up feeling like people with torches were coming to get me after last year-I will point out some facts and necessities, and help in anyway I can. I think its WONDERFUL that COTH members once again rise to the occasion of someone in need.
1: Always have an upfront explanation of the bidding process, as well as rules, and the fact that bids are considered a contract between the stallion owner and the bidder. This should be in the form of a pop up window that people need to get "through" before they can bid-with some sort of "acknowledgement" button.
2: In every auction I have ever seen/dealt with, the bottom line is the stallion owners contract is in effect with no exceptions. People must be made aware that it is their responsibility to read and understand the owners contract before placing the bid. Every stallion has a different contract.
3:legalese: make it clear that the charity does NOT have a relationship with the stallion owners (who are so very generous to donate their breedings) and makes no guarantees as to the soundness, pedigree, offspring or performance record of the stallion. All info should be verified by the bidder prior to breeding.
4:payment-we found it is almost impossible to make someone pay after they have bid but dont want to pay after all. You can chase them with a lawyer, but the cost of forcing the person to pay up more than outweighs the bid. That seems to be an uncommon occurance though.
5: I highly recommend paypal or something if you guys can set it up.
6: we decided this year not to include mail in bids, as they are difficult to reconcile with the internet bids coming constantly. Not that many mail ins came anyway, and then when the bidding closes you have a good idea of what you are dealing with.
7: the charity should send a confirm letter to the stallion owner with the name/phone/address of the winning bid, just to secure everything.
8: confirm letters should go to the winning bidders, because they cannot rely on winning just by looking at the website-it needs to be made "official" and also provide the contact info of stallion owner.
whew-thats it for the moment. Erin, I will circle with you via email-possibly tomorrow, to give you more helpful info. If you have specific questions, feel free to email me. However, I just got this new computer, and upgraded my server tonight, so I might have problems with my email. If I dont respond right away, or if your email is returned, post on this thread and I will contact you.
I will offer whatever help I can give.
GREAT suggestion Fred.

this first year. I heard there were numerous problems with the online bidding for a few of the auctions last year, and I don't think we want to get involved with 4th party, ie ebay.
I agree with Denny that perhaps a small committee should be formed to help simplify things.
I also agree with Spot and PintoFoal about the live foal guarantee. I have participated in stallion service auctions a number of times, as both a stallion owner and a mare owner.
and it is normally a live foal guarantee, under the normal terms/length of that stallion's contract, with no refunds. The bottom line is that we all want the money to go to Baby Aiden. we want everyone to be happy, and we want everybody to get a foal. Since the stallion owner is not getting paid (and we don't want to be) it makes sense, that if for any reason that stallion cannot fulfil his obligation, that another stallion on the list could be substituted.
I have sent Erin the forms used by the CSHA which were modelled on the forms used by the Holsteiner Assoc (both of which I participated in). and all the "legal stuff" is covered pretty carefully.
No one wants to get sued, no one wants an act of generosity and hope to backfire. And we don't want this to get so unwieldy that it becomes unmanageable.
I would be willing to be on the committee.
Again, I keep saying this, but let's keep it as simple as possible. Let's just do it!
note to Rolex being strong and being brave doesn't mean you aren't afraid. Courage and strength are what carries you through the fear. When you wrote that post from the hospital, when you thought you were losing Aiden, I was moved to tears - as I am now just thinking about it.
Love to you and your little baby.

I'm all for keeping it simple! (Although it may be too late for that. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
Obviously the "legalese" of the auction should be spelled out in detail and should be well-publicized. Stegall, maybe you can offer advice on that. I'll email you. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
It seems like the easiest thing is just for bids to be submitted via email. I'll just set up a special email address for bids to be sent to.
Do we want to allow people to have a first, second, and third choice, as someone mentioned? I wouldn't mind doing that, but it would require a LOT more organization. (i.e. I wouldn't just have to track the highest bid for each stallion.)
DMK, oh ye of the organized mind and Excel know-how /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (at least, I think it's you)... would there be a way to put this information into a spreadsheet or something?
Also, I wouldn't mind listing on the website (when it's up) who the leading bidder is for each stallion. I could just update the site each night and include any changes. Would anyone object to that? Does anyone know how that would work if we were to allow someone to have first, second, and third choices?? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
I want to make sure all of you stallion owners are happy with the way this will be run... once we have all these details sorted out, the "committee" can stop bothering you all and move ahead with getting this ball rolling. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

to the breeding contract, but would it give more latitude if the breeding could be transferred?
For example, I win the breeding to my stallion of choice. But after three tries, my mare isn't in foal.
But my friend Sally agrees to compensate baby Aiden with *another* matching contribution to ALF in his fund, to breed her Fertile Myrtle mare.
That is one safeguard to address the LFG.
Another would be to disclaim that a remedy for the guarantee would be to extend the breeding for 2 seasons - with mare owners paying collection/shipping/lab each time. Beyond the 2 seasons, the contract would be null.
It is a risk mare owners should be prepared to take, on the front end. With that in mind, I think within the scope of this auction, mare owners must be expected to provide preliminary veterinary conclusions that the mare is, in fact, capable of being bred.

The Red Fox Farm boys are in, too. In fact, we'll donate breedings to our two latest World Show winners--APHA World Champion Jumper Hot Brew and our new homozygous stallion RFF Blackjack, Top Ten Junior Working Hunter.
I meant to post a brag on these two guys and never did, so will now with some pics from World--and some observations on ex-racehorses.
It will be fun to think about this later in the year, realizing as we fill semen orders on these breedings that the breedings are directly helping one specific child. Definitely a warm fuzzy.

Wow! The incredible offering of stallions is enough to drive a poor mare owner bonkers! I think I need to buy more mares (any lawyers around that can handle the divorce?) /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I've just spent a couple of hours checking out all the 'boys' and my mind is swimming.
Erin, just another thought for handling the auction. Is there anyway of opening up a temporary forum here at COTH to keep track of the winning bids? Have a separate 'topic' for each stallion with the current winning bidder on each. With your new toys the forum can be read-only so only you can post the updates and the order can be frozen. A link from the website with the stallion info to the current high bidders list is all that would be needed.
Also, from the replies I take it that not too many are interested in an ad in the COTH for the auction. So count me in for doing some distribution of flyers once this is finalized. Between hubby and myself, we're at about 280 barns on a weekly basis and they vary from top show barns to breeding farms to backyard breeders and feed stores, etc. We cover a large chunk of Southern Ontario. I'll also do a mailing to tack/feed stores that are out of our area.

I can't tell you anything about the technical organizing part -- as DMK can tell you, she had to walk me through downloading AIM /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - but I can take a look at whatever from a legal perspective.
On the contracts, it seems to me the best way to make it easier for the very generous stallion owner, is to advise the bidders that they need to review the stallion contract for each stallion they are interested in bidding on, and those terms will be binding -- except no refunds on donated fees because once those are given to Aiden's ALF fund, they're gone to that good cause permanently. We will need to reference the stallion owner contact info and website for those that have them to get copies of the contracts, and/or we can get copies of each of the standard contract for each stallion and provide them to whoever asks.
We could also remind the mare owners that if they don't get something of value for their money (i.e., a live foal) they may be able to deduct the full amount paid as a straight donation to ALF. A tax accountant or lawyer, or someone who deals more with non-profits, will know the rules on deductibility a lot better than I do, but I could check around.

OK, in reading the latest pages, it seems to me that if the bids are coming via email and do not (obviously!) have a check attached, there should be no need for 2nd or 3rd choices as suggested. If a mare owner makes a bid of $XXXX for A Fine Romance and sees that the bidding has gone over what they can spend, they can then bid $XXXX on Loyal Pal and so on... Since the check isn't written until the auction is over, I think it would be easier on Erin (and the committee) to not have to deal with 2nd & 3rd choices.
Oh and I would suggest that all bid emails be titled with the particular stallion's name for ease of sorting all of them!!

But you're right... that makes sense. If I've already bid my limit for Loyal Pal and I can see I'm not the leading bidder, well then, I'll just go and bid on someone else.

OK, how about something like this...
State that the COTH/Liver Foundation/Baby Aiden have no affiliation with any Stallion Owner, but are simply acting as a "connecting service". That all bidders need to contact stallion owner and agree to the terms of that Stallion's contract except that all breedings attained thru this auction are for "Return Service only" and that the mare owner will have the choice to accept an Alternative Stallion if the stallion that they win the bid on becomes unable to fufill his contract for some reason, but NO REFUNDS will be given.
I personally will agreee to whatever anyone else decides about the on-line/silent/yahoo bid whatever.

Yup, I do believe we can put all this in excel (especially if we don't have that 2nd/3rd choice option, just a new choice). As it happens, I think I can also work it out so the chart easily identifies whoever is the top bidder at any given moment.
I'll start collecting some required data definitions (stallion/stallion owner/bidder) from the past posts and e-mail a list to you for your thoughts.

They may wish to have a reserve bid on a 2nd stallion (3rd, ?) in case they lose their 1st choice.
ie. Maybe I would be willing to bid $1000. for Thunderpaws, but if he goes over, I would still like to win a breeding. I am unfortunately called away for the last few hours, and can't check online. Now, I don't like Twinkletoes as much, but would be willing to go to $600. for him.

Well, I've donated for similar stuff before, so I have a couple of ideas. I set it up so that once the charity received the money paid for the breeding they would give the winner a certificate stating that they won the breeding. The mare owner was then responsible to forward the certificate to the stallion owner (me in this case) by a set date to claim the breeding. Then the stallion owner would procees as they would in any other breeding situation and send the contract etc to the mare owner. The contract was the same as any of my regular breedings. The one time the winner never actually contacted me (although she did pay), which left me free of the contract (due to the set contact date). The second time (current actually - a fund for my farrier's widow and family - long story) I was contacted by both winners, who have signed contracts for 2003.
As for posting bids, I agree with posting the top bidder. Also, the stallions that are not yet bid on should be marked as such so that they might attract more bidders. If someone with only one mare happens to be top bidder on two stallions maybe they could have the option to refuse one, at which ponit the second highest bidder would get that fee. As for if the stallion dies or becomes unfit for breeding, that's a tough one. Perhaps if a breeding is not won it could be left available to fill such a need (hopefully it won't be an issue).
The information page on each stallion should have a link to the breeding contract. That way before bidding the mare owner can read all the fine print without having to contact the stallion owner directly (a lot less mail for the stallion owners to reply to as well). Add in contact info - both email and phone for each stallion owner so the mare owners can ask any questions ahead of time.
That's all I can think of right now. Oh, Erin, should I send you the details on the boys now, or are you going to send out a batch email when you are ready for the info? I've not sent it yet as I don't want to add to the chaos /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Whistlejacket, the donations are to pay for Baby Aiden's medication needs and future lifetime care expenses after the transplant. Much of it is covered by insurance, but when you're talking about expensive anti-rejection drugs, even the deductibles and co-pay can be steep out of pocket expenses. The ALF recommended to the Hawk family that they try to raise $250,000 for those expenses. As I understand it, the ALF has a mechanism to set up a discreet fund, so that there is no doubt that it is a legitimate charitable donation but the money still gets to the particular individual. You donate to the American Liver Foundation, designating the Aiden Hawk Fund as the recipient, and all of the money goes into that fund to be used for his medical care expenses. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well in the first post. The donations are for Aiden's expenses.
The American Liver Foundation set up his fund (as I assume they do for many of these patients), so that's why the donations from COTHers were all made out to the ALF. They're just earmarked for Aiden.
Aiden's family does have very good insurance, but the ALF has suggested they raise $250,000 for Aiden's lifetime care. So that's what we're chipping in for. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Because the ALF "hosts" the fund, contributions are tax-deductible. And it also assures you I'm not running off to Tahiti with the donations, because the checks aren't made out to me. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
BTW, I can't recall if I posted it on this thread or not, but the donations from COTH posters (which I just mailed to the ALF this week) came to over $2800. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And imagine what it will be after the auction!
I am going to start working through all this stuff this weekend, and hopefully will come up with some text/disclaimers/etc. that I'll let everyone review. Collectively I'm sure we can make sure all the bases are covered.
I'm hoping if we make it obvious that this is a CHARITY function run by volunteers (who may or may not know what we're doing), we'll avoid getting into too much trouble. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oh, Freehold, you can go ahead and send me your info. I'm already flooded... one more won't matter too much! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Seriously folks, let me apologize in advance if I've missed questions on this thread or haven't answered every email. With a full time job and two horses, I don't have a lot of time to focus fully on things over here.
I WILL be spending a good chunk of time getting this organized this weekend, and once I've gotten everything in place, it will be easier for me to handle this information and respond to it more quickly. But for the time being, just bear with me. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
And thanks so much to everyone who has chimed in on this thread, not only with donated breedings, but just with thoughts and advice. Since I am rather clueless with regard to breeding stuff, I sincerely appreciate everyone's input! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Any idea how to make sure the bids are legit and not 12 year old kids bidding on a fantasy? Is there going to be a registration process similar to what you have to do with a real auction.. you know where you have to go and give ID and a credit card? We all like to think that people wouldn't mess with a charity auction, but they will. I'd hate to think that someone gave up bidding because a fake bid made them think the price went too high.
Also, PayPal was mentioned as an option. For anyone in Canada (or elsewhere out of the US) when you register with PayPal they take the information and then send you a code on your next credit card statement. You then go back to the site and enter in the code before you can use their services. Depending on the timing of when you register vs when you sign up with PayPal, this can be up to a month before you get your code. Not good for someone that comes in in the last week or two. Just a potential problem if PayPal is used and someone plans to bid in the last few weeks without preregistering with PayPal.
Last but not least... does anybody have any idea how much online Auction Software runs? There are quite a few sites that will host auctions, handle registration and process all monies. If it's not too expensive, this may be the way to go since all the software is in place

Well, if anyone wants to see the terms of a soon-to-be stallion service auction, Midwest Breeders Group's SSA terms can be seen here:

That might give you some ideas for terms for this auction.

Oh Fairveiw, don't bust Erin's WHEW!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
If a person is willing to bid $XXXX on stallion A, but only $XXX on stallion B in the event they don't get A, they can go ahead and place both bids, and if they win both, defer the one they don't want to the 2nd in line... Would that work better?

I think that brings us to 40? I've gone through my Yahoo BB email account and I think I've added all of the people who emailed me offering donations rather than posting it on the BB... but I'll do a more thorough digging through my mailbox this weekend and make sure I haven't missed anyone. (If you emailed me and aren't on the list, let me know.)
This weekend, I'm going to try to sort out most of the details of how this will work, and then bring them back to you guys for "final approval." I'll also try to find solutions to some of the issues you guys have mentioned.
I think we'll just stick with email bids -- DMK has volunteered to track the bids through an Excel spreadsheet, so that should work well. There will be a little more manual work involved, but I don't think it will be too bad.
I'll also get to work on compiling all of the stallion info and setting up a basic website... most likely I'll just put it on my own personal server for the time being. I'll let you guys take a look at it, and let some of the more design-oriented people come up with some cool graphics for it /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif and then we'll move it to wherever it will be hosted.
For the stallion owners who haven't yet emailed me with their horses' info... hold off on that for a bit. I might just set up an online form that you guys can fill in. It'll make sure we have consistent info on each stallion, across the board. But if you do have pictures you want to have used, do go ahead and email those to me. Otherwise I'll just pluck one off your website. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Again, THANKS for the suggestions and help everyone has offered, and please have a little patience with me as I try to get everything organized and reply to everyone's emails. (If I haven't emailed you back, I'm not ignoring you, really! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )
Hopefully I'll have a lot of stuff to show you guys on Monday. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
BTW, little Aiden is on his way to the hospital in Atlanta, as he's gotten sick again. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif An update has been posted on Off Course.
THANKS AGAIN GUYS! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, one other thing... I think I'm going to purchase a separate domain name to use for this. (The pages won't necessarily be hosted with the domain, but it will at least give us a nifty URL we can pass around where people can find info. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )
Would anyone be interested in "donating" the cost? I think it's about $35 for a year. I'll set it up and everything, but just wondered if someone wanted to do the actual purchasing. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
If you're dying to take part in the auction but don't have a stallion or a mare, here's your chance to make a "donation!" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Email me if you're interested and I'll walk you through it.

kt-rose, I know there were at least a couple of people interested in chipping in for an ad. (Although Robby's COTH article will also help promote the auction.) Maybe start a new topic and see how much interest there is? I think I will have to pass the organization of that along to someone else, as I seem to be getting in awfully deep here. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hrm. I'll go to work on getting the info from the remaining owners this week. Maybe by Friday we can hope to have the basic information? I should at least be able to get everyone to fill out the form by then, although I may not have time to get it up on the website by then.
DMK, do you want me to forward the form emails to you as they come in?
Tannenwald, here's the basics of the auction... you get to set whatever caveats you like. I'm basically telling the bidders that everything is up to the stallion owner, and there will be differences in policy across the list.
It'll be a silent auction, with the bids being submitted to me by email. All the info will be online, including a page on each stallion with a photo and other pertinent info, so you don't need to have a website, necessarily. Bids will open Dec. 6... the closing date is TBD.
I'm pretty much encouraging anyone who's interested to participate... the auction will be advertised in COTH, and I'm going to recruit the BB at large to promote it in their own circles as well, so I'm hoping we'll reach a diverse group of people.
The details are still being sorted out as to exactly how everything will work, but if you're interested, go ahead and send me your info (see this topic (http://chronicleforums.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=6656094911&f=3206053911&m=9886072251) for a link to an online form for that purpose) and I'll add you to the list of stallions. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I started a couple of new topics with info on the basic website I set up and some of the details still to be decided.
Oh, and I don't know if she has posted here, but we have one other addition... Darkhorses' Czulu.

Here is a picture of him at Del Mar, CA for the IHF West Coast Regional where he was 2 y/o Colt/Gelding Champion. He is currently leading Zone 8 in HB points and I think that will hold. Sorry if you have posted the URL and I missed it -- there is so much info on all this -- I don't envy you!!

Yes, it will be www.auctionforaiden.org (http://www.auctionforaiden.org). /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I don't have anything there yet, but the basics of the site will be hosted at that URL. I'll probably leave the individual stallion listings at my site, just to save COTH bandwidth. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Erin - I know that a few of my contacts have come through and listed their stallions and I believe a few others had some that were imminent - where are we now with stallions and numbers?
Thanks!

we are happy and proud to be able to help in some way.
I wish we could do more.
