I must admit, every day I sign onto the bb and read about all you east coasters meeting at shows, having fun, wearing your COTH caps...makes me a little jealous! I think I come from the wrong part of the country!!!! (I have tried telling my parents this for years, to no avail). Is there a clique for those of us from that rainy region known as the Northwest? I'm here for college, and I just got a horse training job in Wilsonville (yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!) so I was wondering if anyone here is from that area and wants to band together to give those east coasters a run for their $$$! And, yes, I know I should have gone east for college, but it was too far for an 18 yr old from the smallest school in the smallest town...lol....Anyway, Rainlovers UNITE!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Leap of Faith have you tried the search or looked at where people are from. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

If you look at the bottom you will see many people on here are from Oregon and Washington and even British Columbia.

Moi, Jair, Hoopoe, Lisi, and more that I all of the sudden have gone blank on /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif my apologies to those I have not listed!!

Sorry....I'm still kinda new here and am working out the bells and whistles of COTH. I was just trying to be friendly and get involved in the horse community in the Northwest since I don't know many people here. I'm sorry if I violated BB netiquette by not doing a search for everyone.

I am just olde and anal about using the search engine, haha /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I had to go to college in Oregon with no car.
It was awful.
Atleast you have a horse to ride.

That Dublin and Bumpky ... they travel in several cliques. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif The West Coast, the California, the Northwest. But they are a lot of fun so everyone likes for them to play in THEIR clique! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am in the Seattle area.

I am so ready for winter. I have my waterproof riding coat, waterproof chaps, waterproof saddle cover, waterproof helmet cover and I just re-waterproofed my paddock boots. I am still in search of the perfect waterproof warm hat (for when I am not riding, of course) and waterproof gloves.

I love the rain /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bumpkin- glad to see I'm not out of line...:-) And, guess what?? Now that I got the horse job, my parents are getting me a car...the deal is that they will get me a barn car....something cheap on gas and insurance for this year...next fall I'll be in London, so we're selling the car...then when I come back, they will get me my gradueation present car...when I graduated hs, I was promised a new car, but I couldn't afford insurace then on a sportscar...which I really want (I know, spoiled...) but now I need a car and I don't want to buy a super-nice car and then drive it all the way home to CA while I'm in London, so this plan will work great....my dad's such a sweetie! As far as who I am working for, her name is Jen Harris (yes, I am ItsASecret from a few weeks ago lol, my first alter!!!) She runs a very nice A-circuit barn that is literally next door to Whip and Spur, Ruch Fellers' place. I'm going riding there on Saturday!!! I can't wait ti get back into the show ring...Jen has a few sale horses that will need to be shown and sold...I'm soooo excited....last year really stunk without horses and without a car....thank god for my boyfriend (who doesn't ride but has a car!!! LOL!) Oh, and btw, I don't post on Towerheads, so someone else may have my name...hehe!!!! Yaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy rain lovers...thank God Jen has an indoor...little miss CA isn't used to riding in sleet!!!!!

How do you like that liquid sunshine?

LOF, I was in the Portland area many years ago. When Rich Fellers was still a junior. But lucky you for landing a job in Wilsonville, such a great part of the country.

Though I did abandon the ship "Oregon" in the mid '80's I now live in the very dusty desert. I don't think I can go back to all those clouds anymore.

Landover, are you interested in H/J or dressage? I have a few old contacts that are still very active in Eugene. Now there is a city to love!!! Rivers everywhere. How I miss running water....don't get me started. Anyway, email me if you want some input.

Welcome..... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Have you met Rich Fellers before? What's he like? Just curious....after watching his amazing run at Spruce a few years ago, I have always wanted to meet the man...not the prettiest rider, but he's damn effective. It was so funny when I was at Jen's place...I was looking at this arena full of jumps that was literally in the backyard of Jen's place (Future Street Farm for all you curious ones) and asked offhand whose place that was. "Oh, that's Whip and Spur," Jen's barn manager replied. My jaw dropped..."But, didn't I pass Whip and Spur like 10 min before I got to your place?" She smiled, "Yup...it's huge." I guess the great GM is coming to give a clinic at Whip and Spur soon...can't remember when...and hopefully I'll have something to ride in the clinic....wow...the idea of meeting the big boys makes my heart beat really fast....so if I meet Rich Fellers of GM, I'll probably have a stroke...what an impression that would make... /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Rose's GONE. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yes, THAT 7 layer fudge cake !!!!!!!!!!!! ( oh &od some of you do NOT know what you missed)

The Geoducks ( that is the proper spelling pronounced gooey duck) = Evergreen State College mascot. Now I do have to give credit to a California college for choosing the Banana Slug as a mascot. ( so they can't be all bad right?)

The Oregon Ducks had a fairly good fb team last year. Then again, Seattle had a fairly good Baseball team this year /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I think we are all taken aback at the arrival of gray weather after a nice summer and last years drought. The ski bums are happy. One snow fall in the mountains and the front page of the paper
this AM shows a snowboarder.

LOF, since Rose's is gone you will have to discover the joys of Powells Bookstore. This is how we spend our dreary horseless weekends. Used or new bookstores and too much coffee and sweet rolls.

Oh, my, I cannot explain my addiction to that place!!!!!!!!!! I am an English major, and besides a barn, that is absolutely heaven! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Powells. I already posted this on the 10 Cities thread, but maybe I should post here, too. I can be an honorary member here, I went to school in Spokane (not many jumpers there, though, sigh...)

This summer I drove from Tahoe to Idaho. Instead of going my normal I-5 to Seattle and across, I went to Winnemucca, NV, and up along the Idaho/Oregon border. I saw a GORGEOUS facility along the way but can't remember the name (treetop? pine top? something like that). It was huge, with many luch green pastures, a few white and green Kentucky-style barns, surrounded by big stone walls and gates, and beautifully landscaped. They were breeding beautiful sporthorses, but I couldn't really tell what they would be trained for (from my vantage point, I couldn't make out any racetracks or rings). Anyone know what the heck I'm trying to describe? It was on the Idaho/Oregon border, not too far from Boise....

Yep, I'll admit it: Bred, born and raised here in Oregon.

For Landover: If you go to www.flyingchanges.com (http://www.flyingchanges.com) or .org (I can never remember which one), you can find a list of places in Eugene that are both h/j and dressage places. From the top of my head I know Triple Rise Equestrian Center is there and a few others. Be pepared for some RAINY weather! But, I can almost guareentee(sp?) you will LOVE the clean air, wide open spaces and the green spaces of Oregon becuase we have a LOT of it! Good Luck in trying to get into the University of Oregon. I hear its one of the top schools in the state if not the Pacific Northwest. VERY beautiful place to be if you like green trees and nice people. (One reason why I LOVE living here in Oregon is becuase it has the most down-to-earth feel here and people are really nice also.)

For Bumpkin: I might be interested in going to audit GM, but truth of the matter is, I am scared TO DEATH to do that. I guess because all the bad things I've heard about him, I don't know if I should go, but if I get up enough courage to go, I'd love to see you there... /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

over the winter? I'm getting a lovely mare to ride this winter- I'm swapping my TB for her for a bit- I was looking forward to FINALLY doing a horse-trial and my TB mare pulled up lame one day- and as soon as she got over that she ripped off a hunk of hoof- (Shoot me now). Anyhoooo, I will have a "showable" horse this winter, but there doesn't appear to be anything interesting going on at the introductory levels.

I have four horses here right now- two foals, a yearling and a gimpy brood-mare. SIGH!!!!! I WANNA RIDE.

the only Oregon ones going are the ones in White City (non sanctioned I believe), and the Innavale HT-that's it for Oregon ones, though we have a series of mini one days at our place. How far away is Gaston? More like WHERE is Gaston?? Lily Glen used to have schooling, though it may have fallen apart now being so many years ago....we have a fledgling Event group here-lots of interest, and hopefully we can put on an event here in the next few years.

What ever became of Emily Hilbruner? She was at the Polo ranch for years, but her parents, Liddy, had a place in Tumalo. Didn't they do some eventing?

Of course I am really dating myself because my actual knowledge is mid '80's.

I even lived at the polo ranch when the Stevenson's had it but that was in the '70's. Cool place. Built the huge indoor AFTER I left.

you do know here....yes, Stevenson's is where I mentioned that we would really like to get an event going again. Sadly it has fallen into major disrepair, but we have high hopes. For those with imagination, they literally COVERED a polo arena..this is the biggest indoor I have ever seen.

I rode there in the late 80's as well....perhaps we could email---anyway, before we do that, Emmy just got a nasty concussion, fell when a friend's horse with navicular stumbled-she is out for many many weeks. She has moved into the HJ world-no more eventing for her.

haven't seen Liddy for awhile-it's a smallis horse world here, but most likely FAR larger than whenyou left...I will email you now....

OMG, imagination....this arena is a regulation size polo field (I believe 100 x 300)totally under cover with totally smooth walls that go ten feet in the air. The exit doors are totally smooth wood so when you are "riding off" your competitor, you will not hang a knee on anything. And lighting, great mercury lights.

I did get to ride in it one weekend when I returned to the area for a dressage show at Dagmar Fancher's. Peter Lert was the judge, and I was stabling at the Polo ranch. I even talked Mr. Lert into coming over and giving me a quick clinic. How I did that I don't know. We did have a common old friend.

Anyway, I have never trotted down the LONG side of any arena like this. I thought we would never come to a corner! Talk about do lateral work....shoulder in, straight, shoulder in straight about a zillion times. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Last time I visited they were storing farm equipment and hay in half of it. It is sad to hear it is in such disrepair. It truly was a landmark when the Stevenson's owned it. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Is the Portland Outdoor Store still around in downtown Portland? I used to ride with the owner's daughter, Dianne. A few years back I called and her sister gave me a number in the Beaverton area for a store that Diane had opened. Haven't seen it advertised in Flying Changes for a long time though.

The Portland Outdoor Store had an excellent H/J department and Dianne was the Queen of H/J shoppers!!! Knew "correct" and knew fit.

PS Wasn't the Stirrup Cup in Bend and Beaverton? Joanne Shook used to own it?

Let me know if you find them. Tell Diane, "Clownin's" mom, Kathy said Hi.

OK, this is for Bumpkin, Leap Of Faith and everyone else who is interested:

The Beaverton store of the Portland Outdoor Store has CLOSED. It closed about, oh, gee, 3 years ago? Might have been four. Anyway, its been a while and the only reason I know this is that it was my FAVORITE tack store. It was really close to my house and my mom and I would go nearly EVERY weekend when we had money to spend (and sometimes when we didn't.) /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
That space is now a Korean Store. /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
But, never fear, the Portland Outdoor Store is still here! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif The people who ran it took everything (or almost everything) and put it in the DOWNTOWN location. For the life of me, I CAN'T remember what street it is on, except to tell you its next to Saturday Market. I think you walk a few blocks up and turn left and you are there. I think... /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Sorry you guys, I am not that good with directions, as you can see. I DO know that the sister of the owner of the Portland Outdoor Store opened up her own tack store called Horse Talk and More(?) and that is located somewhere in Tualitin. I have never been there.
I personally like Gallops, but that's only becuase they have horse cookies that my horse LOVES like crazy. I think any tack store would suite your needs just fine, Leap Of Faith.
Bumpkin, I remember when the Portland Outdoor Store used to sponser a horse show series, but I think that they quit doing that, even though I have no idea why. I think that is why they haven't been in Flying Changes for the last few years. They are a neat group of people and in fact, I went down to the downtown location a while ago, and the person that used to work at the Beaverton store recognized me from a few years earlier! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It was quite amazing! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Hope that helps clear up everything that you were wondering about the Portland Outdoor Store. Oh, one more thing... They used to have an Gresham store, but they closed that store down shortly before closing the Beaverton Store. I still miss that Beaverton Store, though. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif What a selection! (At least for what I was looking for). /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This would go way way back, but maybe Cactuskate would recognize it - Jerry Smith's tiny little tack shop right under the Vista Bridge just before you got to downtown Portland? He had operated it for just forever, and we always got our tack there. I remember getting measured for coats at a store in downtown Portland, but I'm not sure it was Portland Outdoor Store... but then again with my memory, maybe it was. (we're talking 30 years ago /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif ) I also do remember a store in Beaverton (Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy?) since I lived in both the Raleigh Hills and then Cedar Hills areas.

What a trip down memory lane!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

LOF you need to embrace the PNW lifestyle. Frizzy hair is a fashion statement.

The layered look hides the weight you put on drinking half coffee half milk and oh a biscotti, just a little one.

You need to get a horsie hat from Kerrits. The are down river in Oregon and their fuzzy horse hats are warm and amazingly water absorbing. I guess their winter breeches are mighty nice too. (required horse reference)

So, are we still all pondering meeting at the GM clinic?

When I moved to my last trainers farm she was in the process of building her indoor facility. We, being dutiful PNW riders rode outside in all weather.

One day I decided to have a school over fences and as my partner in crime was there and free we had no choice but to ride at that time. Could not wait for a break in the weather.

Rode in the rain.

wearing a red shetland wool sweater (from Nordies of course) I got fairly wet.

Drove home ( 45 miles) with the heater blasting. By the time I got home the sweater had shrunk on me. The dye had run and my panties were pink /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

Thank you Bumpkin for sharing.

All too true as I am mourning the loss of my "very bestest" friend from junior high school on. "Joan of the Coast" was only 51 when she died last week. She had been battling cancer for the last 12 years. And what a fighter she was.

She had been living in North Bend, Oregon on the coast for a number of years. She gave me my "handle" Cactus Kate when I moved to Arizona many years ago.

She never quite "got" my horse passion, but one of the things she was most adamant about was taking risks, not denying yourself opportunities. She was fortunate to have been able to travel the world, achieve personal as well as professional goals. She had a full, robust life. I just wish it hadn't ended so soon.

I love her and will miss her greatly.

Thank you for letting me share.......

LOF time to pick up an ice scraper. This handy dandy item will become the "hoof pick" of your car. You will buy one, use it once or twice and then it disappears! They generally live on the floor of the car between uses and it can be amazing in their ability to hide.

Come summer you will have four or five.

Credit cards DO NOT do a good job in a pinch.

Of course there are those lucky folks who do not have to get into their cars before 9AM and by then the windows have defrosted themselves. ( and if you bought that lie...)

Do they still have the galloping track around the middle pasture? I remember galloping sets 'til our feet froze off. And going on a great trail ride along the powerline. We must have been out for hours.....My feet were like little icicles, shattered upon dismounting.

And the sunsets....over the 3 Sisters, oh you are bringing back some wonderful memories.

Is the little cistern house still up by the house by Knotts Road? That was my bedroom, when I lived at the house with the family that trained the polo ponies. Anyone remember Jimmy Mero? Was from the Bay area originally. What a hand with a horse.

How right you are about the dry weather. You really can be out when it is all of 4 degrees, count them 1,2,3,4 /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif and survive.

Here is a photo of your trainer's mother jumping 7' something in the Seattle Coliseum, (where the Sonics play), back in the late 60's!!

The horse is Man A' Live who was the real Bumpkin's full brother.

Isn't that the curse of living in the west. They tell you what is what before you get a chance to vote.

Horse Poop. ( Obligatory Horse Reference = OHR)

Actually I remember having shows at the Seattle Center. Takes a special type person to be able to warm up on sawdust over cement. Sort of like doing a show at the Garden only without the traffic ( at least in those days)

LOF you are doing right by true NW natives by perpetuating the notion that the weather is horrible here. Less rain than most of the east coast. We just get it in small doses. I spent 2 weeks at Wellington some years ago and I swear it rained an inch everyday at lunchtime. Lovely show venue by the way, no place to sit except on soggy grass. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I vote for the layered look as I am not a fan of Starbucks. Those humble hippies have forgot where they came from.

Actually I prefer Tully's coffee, a little less acid, and mild to the tastebuds /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh right I have to make this horse related.

Well I tend to stop at Tully's for lattes to take to my trainer from time to time, but she prefers Starbuck's which is further from the stable than Tully's.
I will ask them to make it extra HOT if I stop at Starbucks. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Mr Chris Doering, the builder of the fabulous DeveonWood Equestrian Center ( recently featured in COTH along with a cover art of their fabulous mural) was killed instantly in a traffic accident yesterday on HWY 203 .

Chris was a unique character, generous of spirit and a great representitive of the farm and Dressage in Region 6. His wonderful work in building this facility is a legacy. He was at every show helping where needed.

I hope that the Ratner will suggest an appropriate memmorial for Chris. Perhaps a contribution to Habitat for Humanity?

The car line is even longer!!!

The Police Officer, (one of atleast 5 there), controlling the crowd told us 2 hours in the car lines and an hour in the walk in line.
So we chose the walk in line.

If you go at 3 A.M. the wait is shorter though.

Hoopoe told me that. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i am obviously so slow. LeapOfFaith, Im in Salem. doubt anyone knows my instructor, but her name is Jackie Browning. No one would know me... i dont get out much. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I have been around at O State's League shows, and i might show up at their jumper schooling in January.
Devonwood is such a nice place, im hoping to make it out next year for the Casual Qualifier, and HOPEFULLY for the USDF championship if i qualify. I dont know where ill be around for hunters, might end up at Brawleys for their classic this summer, if i can get my instructor out there. Who knows... depends on if i can get my horse to be sound and less idiot-like in the future. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif OREGON STATE will WIN the Civil WAR! even if they are 1-9... who cares. haha can you tell im a die hard OSU fan..??

I know about the 3AM secret of Krispy Kream purely from second hand experience. One of my (now) former co-workers had the first hand info.

I am in the process of trying to fit back into my tall boots after almost 10 years out of the saddle. NOT a good feeling!

What I am going to do withthe left over Tandoori chicken that is in the freezer????
