View Full Version : Sexy Rexy's Show Debut

Well we FINALLY made it to our first show yesterday. I didnt tell Rex ahead of time in case he decided to hurt himself again. The show was out at the Jax Eq Center and was being held inside the indoor (not covered, but stadium like indoor). I figured I might as well take him over on Friday to show him the indoor before the show. Plus, my boarder was showing as well and she wanted to leave her gelding there over night.

Finally arrive on Friday (taking 30 mins longer than normal due to school zones and holiday traffic). Walked Rex around in the indoor. He was all puffed up and snorting and looking but was very good. I decided I needed to just tack up and get on and at least walk him around in there before loading up and heading home.

Getting INTO the indoor is fun as there is a "warm up" area behind the announcers booth with two entrances to the indoor on either side of the booth. Theres lots of noises, big black scary areas, etc. We get through the entrance and into the indoor. Lots of looking, quite a few good spooks (heaven forbid someone move in the seats), scared himself a few times with the sound of the footing hitting the arena rails and echoing. Finally he started to settle down. Then our turn came to go into the arena itself. We went through Intro A and B really fast. He did really well but half way through Intro B was starting to say "ok Im done!". We pushed through and ended on a good note. However, LEAVING the arena was another ordeal. We now had to walk back through the pathway between the wall and the announcers booth, into the scary "warm up" area. He had quite a bit of backing up, side steps, getting a little light up front, etc. I didnt expect him to just march through but I did want him to at least stand and look at it and even just take one step forward. Finally, he took a BIG breath and just marched through (I imagine he had his eyes closed too lol).

I did take him home because I was not crazy about leaving him over an hour away, esp at his first show, and it would be a lot to feed Layla at home and then hurry up and get to the show to feed Rex and be ready to get on at 8am.

So he loaded and unloaded perfectly like the night before. He was looking around from inside the stall and calling a bit but he was still handling everything very well. I heard someone say that they saw "Dean Graham" pull up. I was excited as thats my trainer. I find him and see him in white breeches. Ask him if hes showing and he says no. So I said well who are you here for? And he says "YOU!" Oh that made everything so much better.

So we warmed up in the outside warm up arena. Rex was more "up" than the night before obviously with there being much more activity and horses than before. Dean had to lead us into the indoor and the steward didnt come and get me until it was my turn in the actual ring. We have it set up so the next person on deck can go into the indoor and warm up next to the arena, which is what I thought we were doing. Until the bell rang! LOL

All I wanted was to stay in the saddle, stay in the arena, and somewhat perform the test lol. Rex was pretty tense but tried very hard. Our transition to walk between X and C was interesting to say the least (involving stopping, side stepping, getting light up front, walking forward, balking, turning, etc). He was better away from C and the judge but still tense which was to be expected. He was doing better as we crossed the diagonal until he realized we were going back towards that scary judge. Our circle at C was interesting and then our walk transition ended up being a stop and turn and face the judge at C. LOL Free walk was a little jiggy but he tried hard. Final halt was good. But he was SO good for his first test and esp being in that indoor which can unsettled even very seasoned horses.

Dean got on and rode him for a bit after my first test. There were many more horses in the warm up outside at that point which I think made Rex feel a little better. Then Dean worked him a little in the warm up area behind the announcers booth inside the indoor.

We had 1.5 hrs before our next test. I got back on and Dean was again so helpful. Both times he kept telling me to lengthen my reins and push him forward. Trust him. And I did (even though I didnt want to!) and we had some really really really nice work outside. The 2nd time Dean said that what we had here was perfect and to just do this inside. I *had* to keep my legs on at all times and not be afraid to go to the whip if he doesnt listen to my legs and to put my hands forward even if he feels like hes going to shoot out from under me. (easy for him to say!)

We actually made it into the indoor on our own with just a little extra encouragement from the whip. He actually came through the breezeway and into the arena like a fire breathing dragon! LOL Had a little more time so we made a few circles around the scary judges booth. Went to trot around the arena and the bell rings. I just kept my legs on and hands forwward and really felt like I was sitting on a keg of dynamite! But I could tell that he wanted to listen and be good and he wasnt being over reative or anything. So I just went with it.

Our centerline was actually much better than I thought it would be. Decent halt. A little balking going to the judge and C again but came right back to me. Circle was ok. Half way through he was getting stuck and crooked. Got that fixed, pressed on into the corner at K (which was spooky to him even the night before). Free walk was meh no real stretch but I didnt expect him to anyway. Medium walk was actually good and I was really proud at how hard he focused on me when coming by the judge again. Our last circle right was awesome and we had a great final center line and halt. And he didnt even spook with all of the clapping at the end of the test.

Our first test we scored a 53.75% and 4th (out of 4 I believe). I figured it was a 52 or 54%. But I was happy with him regardless. I felt a lot better about the second test and Dean agreed I rode it much better and did exactly as I should at C with the balking. Well we pulled out a 66.88% for first place. Plus it was a qualifying ride for our GMOs championships in the fall. I need 2 scores over 60% at Intro B so I have my first.

Our Intro A test ranged from 3 to 7 in points per movement. Our entry was a 3 and our final halt was a 7. We received a 5.5 for gaits, a 5 for impulsion and submission but a 7 for riders position and effectiveness, and a 6.5 for geometry. Judges comments were "very nice horse. Continue to give him confidence"

For Intro B, we got 7s on our entry, medium walk, transition between H and C to trot and our final center line and pulled out at 7.5 for our circle right. Gaits score improved to a 7, impulsion to a 6.5, submission to 6.5 (with comment to keep supporting him he is on his way!), with my rider scores staying 7 and geometry going to 7. Comments were "Well ridden! Keep giving him confidence!"

Rex was SO SO SO good. I am beyond impressed with how well he handled everything. Heck I was impressed with how he handled Friday night. I am so thankful for Dean to surprise me like that and come to the show for us. And it was nice to hear him say that Rex would have done the same thing to him if he had ridden him in Intro A as well.

It was great to be back in the saddle at a show again. So many friends rallying around us and supporting and encouraging us. And of course my amazing husband who gave Rex a nice pep talk before the show and if you listen VERY closely in the video, you can hear his gentle encouraging words lol.

At the moment, I only have Intro B uploaded. It took me 3 tries and MANY hours (ya know how it upload for like 3 hours and gets stuck in the last 18 mins???). Oh and this is shot in HD so make sure the youtube setting is on that for the video quality. Excuse the photos as they are stills from the video and other than the ones outside, they arent super clear but I have them and thats enough.

Oh and! LOL ALL of my white breeches are 2 sizes too big for me (last time I wore them was 2 yrs and 50lbs ago!) so it looks a little ridiculous esp when posting as the belt was causing the waist to bounce all around and get all poofy and ugh! I felt like MC Hammer when I got out of the saddle as my breeches were SOOOOO baggy! I mean seriously, I could have put my girlfriends 3 yr old in the front of the pants there was so much room (def made me feel like a kangaroo too). And yes, I def am in a defensive position (at least from my seat down) which hey, I dont deny! And if you notice in the photos, in Intro A, I had on my tall boots but they are a 10 when I am a 9 so I have to put my foot so far in the stirrup and I also cant feel my leg so I switched them out for my half chaps for Intro B and things went a lot better.

This was the last show for our GMO until the fall but there are some other dressage shows around this summer. My girlfriend and I are also looking at spending a long weekend over at Deans for a little mini summer camp.

So without further ado, pics and video.

Yep, those pants are a weeeeee bit too large. On the positive side of it - you look great!

Great job just sticking with it on a greenie in a new and frightening situation, and congrats on such a good first experience! The blue ribbon and qualifying score are great - but turning it into a good experience for him is so much more valuable for your future. :)

Congratulations on a successful first outing. Also a huge congrats for working on your health and fitness. So important! You are also to be commended for trusting both your horse and trainer when you were feeling insecure. Yay!!!!

Just my opinion, but I'd shorten those stirrups a couple of holes...especially ona young horse who is learning to use their back.

Huge congrats again!!!!

Thanks everyone! It was a great show and wonderful experience. Rex is my first truly green horse so these are all firsts for me too.

Manda, I had them a hole shorter like last month or just before he hurt himself. I need to go back and read what problems I was having that caused me to put them down. It may have been when I was having issues with being crooked which I have a grasp on now with different therapies with the chiro. I prefer a shorter stirrup as well so I may try that again.

Congratulations!!! What an awesome improvement within the same show. I can't wait to see his future pictures as he settles into the show routine and really learns how to strut his stuff. If he looks half as nice in the ring as he does in all of the schooling pictures you post then he is going to dominate.

I watched the video on facebook, Shantel. He's so lovely! And brave for the coliseum. Last summer, at 3rd level, with countless times in a coliseum, Riley put on a far more shameful display, including neatly reversing a ten meter canter circle. And most embarrassing . . . I had to get off him to walk him INTO the arena. And mount behind the judge, who was staring at us the whole time. He was 15. You guys are ahead of the curve, even with the injuries. Best of luck . . . and come show in SC when it gets too hot in Florida!
