The first weekend in October is the 6th and 7th.

The 7th is the CDCTA/VADA NOVA team challenge at Great Meadow. How about getting together there instead?

Or if you want to meet at FP, how about the previous weekend? There is a H/J show there on Sept 30.

OOhhhh I wanna go!

I assume it "with horse".

October looks pretty open for me, though the second week is better than the first.

Oh this will be FUN.

FairWeather

"With horse" is how I'll be travelling, but non riding folks are more than welcome to come point and laugh at us!
Besides, we'll need someone to help pick us up off the ground when our trusty steeds dump us /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ohhh, if it's October 6 or 7 I might be able to make it.

Let me know which day you decide!

I will not bring Phyllis, though. She would kill me on that cross country course!

Janet
Sep. 18, 2001, 08:35 AM
I would still prefer the last weekend in September (the H/J show won't affect schooling on the CC course).

I could possibly bring Belle on Oct 6th, but I really ought to be preparing for the team challenge.

Sep. 18, 2001, 08:45 AM
Unfortunately my horse is off right now, I hope to have him back by the middle of October or early November. Let me know next time you do another schooling and hopefully my guy will be back and I can go too.

It doesn't matter what is going on in the rings, you can almost always school on the CC Course (unless DRPC is running a competition, but I don't think thay have any more this year).

Everythingbutwings
Sep. 18, 2001, 01:18 PM
It doesn't matter if your new horse isn't up to the actual jumps yet, it will do him worlds of good to participate and mingle! Pockets has never been on an outside course but will greatly benefit from the exposure.

From what I recall of FP years ago, the jumps are all designed with a range of ability in mind. From 2' to much more demanding, we will take them one at a time and enjoy sharing each other's knowledge. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

(Besides, I hope to have a crock pot of Mr. Wing's barbecue to share!)

HN73
Sep. 18, 2001, 01:23 PM

Ya'll have never had BBQ so good.

Everythingbutwings
Sep. 18, 2001, 01:29 PM
Wings will be along and in need of a nice, tiny and light guiding hand around the wonders of Frying Pan. HN73, you have yet to sit on the big galoot!

I can't bring Pockets and Wings leaving Maddie at home so it is just the pony or the entire barn. Seeing as how I must nurture Maddie and tend to the barbecue, Wings will be in need of an escort /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, my friend has her mare at the barn right next for Frying Pan. I can see if she'll let me ride her. Never ridden the mare, but she sounds nice. I liertlly have only jumped a 2'0 vertical on Sonnet before. 5 times at the most. But she does love the field, so we can just hack. I will see about getting a trailer tomorrow /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm getting very excited now! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I took Sonnet on a trail yesterday and I hadn't ridden her since Friday and before that I hadn't ridden her all week (Sick and school). She was perfect. We were 3rd the whole time, she didn't race and try and catch up, she jumped the one jump with out a problem (She did buck after, but ah well..no biggie). And we cantered through the field with practally no reins. I figure if I can't jump at Frying Pan, getting her out in the field at a new place will be great practice for our hilltopping debut in the Spring.

I'm sure that who ever would drive me there (Hopefully Mom) would be more than willing to stay and take pictures and help anyone hold horses or whatever. She's a good horse Mom who tries. And my Dad is pretty good too.

The only conflict I might run into is getting a trailer. My trainers Mom has a 2 horse that I could borrow, but my friend used it this weekend, and said that the lights and something else didn't work. Hopefully that gets fixed.

I'll let you guys know though!

We will be NEEDING those brownies!

Mr. Wings has been given the go ahead to create vast quantities of Barbecue. Yummy treats coming!

Inverness, Clive's Mom and HN73 will attest to the warmth and comfort of the RV in the event of inclement weather. Rain or Shine (hurricanes excluded) Additionally, we have a teeny color TV so you can tell the S.O. the game will be on (until we need to replay the home videos of our experiences on the cross country /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

Luckily I have a multi-outlet extension cord to plug into the RV's generator so let me know if you have a dish that requires heat. (I recall a very nice St. Patrick's day crock pot full of yummy corned beef and cabbage at the 'chases!) We are moving into brisk weather, simmering meatballs, hot cheese dip, and barbecue will keep us functioning. Finger foods are always a treat. Desserts NEVER turned away!

I have NEVER met anyone from this board /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif and am so excited to put some faces to names /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I've got a 22 year old and a coming 3 year old. I've been debating on who to bring. Ozzy (2) would gain SO much from a casual outing to see a x-country course, but Whiskey is my retired event horse...and at 22 still a TOTAL handful. If I could bring both i would gladly hand Whiskey off to some unsuspecting BBer /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Colin, I was heartbroken that I missed the opportunity to miss some of the "festive" members of the board this weekend, but drama and unforeseen circumstance kept me away. I would have LOVED to have been there to help you appreciate the fine cheese of ETBW, and even more giddy to help you an SU take on that tap at Mosby's...

and ETBW, it sounds to me like you may be one of the fabulous people in this world that restores my faith in humanity. I'm so looking forward to meeting you and all the others. If there's ANYTHING i can bring (besides, as my signature says, my willingness to humiliate myself, and a sense of humor) PLEASE let me know /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Kennett Square has given me a passing grade in "Trail Riding 101" and will allow me off-property with the perfect Billy. Now I just have to hitch a transport - or maybe I'll take Elghund's suggestion and ride across the Dulles runway over to Frying Pan. Talked to my pony taxi this am - and she will either bring her horse and ride with us (my vote - she's a blast) or let me use the trailer myself.

I'll have to bring something easy to cook - I'll have my hands full with (as HN73 likes to call him) The Big Brown Couch.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I look forward to meeting you all. Now, where are those darn rust britches I love (literally) to school in..... hmmmm.

OK, I guess it's time for me to make an appearance and meet you all. I go to Frying Pan frequently to school the XC course. I love it! I will be there with the paint pony in tow.

MargaretF you are welcome to jump around on my pony. She jumps anything you point her at and is lots of fun. Since I am a chicken who rarely jumps over 2'6 I'd love to see her over some of the bigger stuff!

BTW, when we go to school there we usually call first to make sure the course is open.

I always learn from getting out, especially from being able to see how other riders cope with their horses and the obstacles. Sort of like watching a course ridden on a horse with striding like your mount so you can pick the best line.

Schooling sessions should be fun, we will all make the most of ours /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I tried to get on the Fairfax County Park Authority web site today to get some info but the site was down. Anyone know if the indoor or other rings are booked for the 7th?

This WILL be a rain or shine excursion. The Difficult Run site gives very good descriptions of the footing around the jumps and what one can expect from each effort. I suggest participants in our little soiree check out the pictures and think ahesd to what will be the "problem" jump for the individual horse/rider combos. It isn't always the jump we expect that is SCARY!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I hope MargaretF will get him to see the error of his ways /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Should be enjoyable for all concerned (except Pockets!) He has been over quite a lot of natural obstacles on trail, fallen logs, stone walls, creeks and ditches, but the mere hint of formality to the situation and his jaw sets.

Between riding Pockets and watching the others negotiate obstacles (as well as feasting throughout the day) it should be quite a learning experience.

I am really thinking of bringing Wings along, too. He is truly green, just walk/trot and been out on trail a couple of times. He would benefit from being a grandstand for the day.

Well I am totally psyched. I know there will be one jump that Cressy *will not* go near, and that is the Frying Pan Park sign/jump. Last time I was there, I was heading Cressy towards it, and when I was about 4 strides out two people jumped up from behind it. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif They didn't realise it was a jump, and no one on our side of the jump could see people sitting against it on the other side. If they had stayed put, they would have been fine, actually.

When they popped up, Cressy put it in reverse so fast I almost went over her head. Every time thereafter, if she caught a glimse of that jump, she'd slam on the brakes and back up/go sideways whatever to get away from it.

Needless to say, I guess Cressy does *NOT* like Jack-in-the-Box jumps.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

JAGold - would love some of your help myself. I've had a major ditch problem with my horse. Of course when I took a lesson with Jimmy Wofford he said it's not the horse who has the problem in this outfit with ditches. He's better b/c I'm at a farm with a ditch so I school it just about everyday and he always goes at events and I can ride just a plain ditch, but give me a ditch with something else worked into it, like a ditch and wall or trakener or my latest new fear the elephant trap and I freeze. I'm not ready to revisit a ditch with anything else right now (just had a crash at the beginning of the month) but I need to build trust in my horse over ditches. Ok, I completely rambled on here, but the jest is hopefully you will have some helpful insights for us. I just saw you are from CA, are you going to be there on Sunday?

I'll be happy to see if I can give you a hand with ditches. My basic philosophy of ditches claims that horses regularly canter on a 12-foot stride, so a ditch is really no physical effort for them. We just have to ride in such a way as to minimize the ditch--in our minds and the horses.

map (http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_find?link=btwn/twn-map_print&mapsize=large&event=options_update&title=Washington-Dulles+Int%27l+Airport&uid=u2hdj5e3j0mar4wd:tl0y1ahyz&SNVData=3mad3-0.fy[aywd4z_%29ztxhyz%3bpq%7cs9z,p7%3b8aq.hqu%3b[%14259jw8miw%3d%151n2sf%2bOlv%272%2b%13knwi4j[_%3d%3a%10F%3daywd4z_%29zt5qyt_1a7%3bwh%7c2%24hgv[l3iedgv%245l1t%3b8%3b7omcj%3bN3emdrsjqr%29Q0cndg%2 bK1m%27n%2bVj4hq87)
Coming from DC or points north (ie: maryland)
Basically you want to get on 495 until you see signs for the Dulles Toll Road (called 267)...Take the TOLL road, not the Airport "dulles access road" Your first toll will be 1.00 for a typical truck and trailer. Add .25 cents for a dually.

There are two exits you can take...The first one has Less lights, but no stores in case you need gas, food, beer etc. This is Monroe street, toward Reston. (off the exit and after the toll you go LEFT)
Stay straight until you see signs for Frying Pan Park. Follow signs (you will be making a right onto 608) and another right into Frying Pan park...Please see parking directions below!

You may also go down one additional exit on the toll road...this will bring you through a few more lights and stores and stuff...great for last minute ice-runs /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
You would take the CENTREVILLE road exit...after the toll make a LEFT.
Follow the signs to Frying Pan (about 3 miles up)
Do NOT turn on Frying Pan road...its a lie /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Parking:
There is Ample parking at FPP, but the nicest setting is over on the cross country course. You can park all over by the ring, but if there is any breeze whatsoever you get really, really dusty. I suggest we park behind the indoor in front of the big ring. Just look for the RV...My truck and trailer will be there...Look for the Banged-to-hell Silver dodge (ahem...its PLATINUM) and a maroon bucket-o-rust two horse...
That'll be me! I plan on getting there at 9:00 and staying till the cows come back home...

I am coming from DC--I'll take 66 West--then follow the exit towards 495/Dulles? (This is where it all comes out, folks. I am a reasonable, competent person until it comes to getting from point A to point B...) --Jess

I have easier directions that avoid the tolls too!!

I come from Maryland so I take 495 to 66W to 50W. From 50W take the FFX Co. Parkway which is less then 2 miles onto 50. Go right on the exit. Follow parkway till you come to West Ox Road and make a left. West Ox Road is the 5th light off the parkway, it's on a hill and there's a sign that says Frying Pan Park next left. Follow West Ox for about a mile then make a right into Frying Pan. I normally park by the upper ring but it can get very tight up there so will probably park by the indoor. They have water there and on weekends they have a food vendor and the biggest winner for FP, heated bathrooms!!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm probably bringing Mr. Clive's Mom and the dog (not necessarily in that order) - so those with hold-out SO's can be assurred that at least Mr. Wings and Mr. Mom will be there to talk Non-Horse.

Just tell them there to bring beer and a lawn chair and sports will be on tv! (Until we need to liberate the set to view videos we have shot of the obstacles!)

Bring their own tv and plug it into the RV's outlets!~ /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Bring a satellite dish and they can keep themselves occupied for hours!

Please send me a goody bag of some BBQ..... If I can't have a breeding contract to one of the Bonita Farm boys I would love to drown my sorrow in some of your most yumcious BBQ!!

Unfortunately no jumping for my horse. We had some shoeing problems that were fixing. My friend that had the same shoeing problems just had her horse pull his suspensary ligament so we are playing it safe with my horse and not jumping till the end of October. We'll still be there, just no jumping.
