Judy Hill Groves rode Prescription in the Amateur Owners ( and the 4 foot division before there was an Amateur Owner Division ! ).

The Dice bros were both ridden by RJ. Double Dice was also ridden by Oswaldo Mendez.
As far as Balbuco goes, I believe he was "in house" in 1972 so that would have made Rodney his rider. Unless you are referring to the Argentinian rider he came from who name is *^%@#...
Another youngster could have been Southside.

Frances ran Little Hawk Farm for the Reynolds', the metal/aluminum foil people. The farm was near where Foxwood wound up; in fact, she purchased the land from Mr. Reynolds when she decided to go on her own.
More Frances trivia: Frances had a number of serious illnesses during her life, including cancer, but there was one that struck her just as Joe and Conrad were getting ready to make their break with her. They ended up staying an extra year because of this illness. What was it?

The FL phenoms: your departure is delayed 24 hours but the rest of your clothes are all packed, so you run the clothes you're wearing through the wash so you can put them back on the next day. (Happened to me at least twice.)
The new horse that's going on your load arrived without a Coggins.
The vet who promised to stop out first thing to do the health certificate on that new horse was called away to a colic anyway.

It once took us 30 hours in an ice storm to get from NYC to Camden, SC!
I was following the truck at 25 MPH on Rt. 95, and I thought he was going too fast for the road conditions.
Laid over in Camden for just 8 hours, then went the rest of the way so the truck driver's schedule wouldn't be messed up.
Someone who saw me get out of my car at WEF later told me I had looked like a deer in headlights- gee, thanks.

Lordy MHM, wasn't that part of departure for FL? Just keep rewashing those clothes, cause there's a blizzard that has just closed the roads. SO, no vet, no health, no coggins and the horse you have been waiting for is someplace in upstate NY. The driver is panicing with it, he doesn't know how far he can get. Could you possibly meet him?????

Actually, we did meet another truck in the ice storm to swap a horse. The parking lot was so slick we ran the ramp straight from one truck to the other and led her right across. The potential for heart failure (mine) was high.

You want another "Florida" memory? (from back when Wellington wasn't even a dream) ...
"M" horse trucking company sends a truck to "Darien" for annual trip to Florida. Drivers arrive to find GIANT pile of bagged shavings (major grumbling!!), trunks, etc. (and horses). Drivers load trunks, etc. and then shavings. Trainer "C" watches out office window to make sure giant pile of controversial shavings get loaded.
Drivers slam door to "the peak" (appears filled with shavings), horses get loaded, truck leaves quickly! "C" waves goodbye, and from her vantage point cannot see giant pile of shavings in the driveway. Drivers had tossed them out of the other side of "the peak!" I recall the "pile" in the door of the peak was about 12 (of 100).
"C" calls owner of "M" trucking company in anger! Drivers long gone on their way to Palm Beach /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Too funny!!
There was a noted proprietor who, while the "regular" help got the horses bandaged (thirty or so) would slip over to a nearby town and round up all the remaining, currently unemployed, horse knowledgeable "natives." You never knew how many of them would actually arrive in Florida or have jumped ship at the first truck stop.
How (or why)did we do it? I guess youth (or stupidity!) All kidding aside, would one of us not do it all over again?

Trucker stories.... When I was a kid, Emerson would make us ride with the horses to the one days, no matter how cold it was. I think he thought it "built character", or more likely he was hoping to discourage us. (It didn't work). I'm talking REALLY cold winter mornings, trips up to two hours. This policy used to upset Lee, (drove for Bill Barry for 40 years). However he had a solution. We would leave the club, Lee would pull over about a mile down the road, load us all up front with him and keep us entertained and warm, until about a mile from the show. Then he would stop again, pile us all back in the trailer for the last five minutes of the trip. We would arrive at the show, and Em was never the wiser! We did this for years...
And no Emmett, I wouldn't trade those experiences and memories for anything.

"Poochy" Gibson. Son, Jimbo.
Dana, we had a shipper in MN who would do the same thing for us! MN winters are the worst, yet all grooms were expected to ride with the horses (and sleep in the tackrooms at the multi-day shows). This fellow would do exactly the same; stop shortly after leaving the farm, put us up front and then reverse the procedure near the show. Once the bosses came up on the van in their car while we were in front; three of us quickly huddled on the floorboards so as not to be seen!
I miss the old days and no, we never gave it a second thought back then. It was all part of the fun.

Flew back to US after an international event. 747 with only horses and some motorcycle parts. Like a giant empty whale belly!
Flight organizer had to come up with CASH so that the pilot would take off (this was a little scary to witness, actually).
Boxed lunches served in the "lounge" - above the cargo compartment (used a ladder to climb up). No furniture. Sat on floor. One of the flight crew noticed there were 12 boxes and 13 people. There was a stowaway aboard!!(he had hidden in a horse box holding a dressage horses head - huge white stallion). When we got to Newburgh (NY), the 13th person walked off the plane, leading a horse (like we all did), and caught a ride with one of the horse vans...
Can anybody name the stallion? CHRYSOS (Hilda G!)

And another...
At a show in Europe, at the end of a LONG Sunday, we packed up the lorry to go home to the farm. As they were pulling out in the Mercedes, the last thing the bosses said was, "If you stop on the way home, make sure somebody stays with the horses." Fine, whatever.
So we get on the road, and in about 15 minutes come to a little village with a fast food place that will obviously be our last chance for food/rest rooms/sodas for hours, but it looks like it's about to close. Of course, we all scramble out to run in before the doors are locked- picture a big clown car at the circus. Just as the last clowns hop out, what do we notice at the drive-through window? A familiar black Mercedes!
So the last person out of the truck saw it, thought on her feet, walked towards the back of the truck, opened the windows more, and waited for the first person to come back beore she went in to get food.
We were all so proud of outsmarting the boss- that hardly ever happened in that operation!

How about Ronnie Silcox hiding in the beautifully bedded straw stall, that would be under the banks waiting for Veile to walk into the stall. Ronnie would leap from beneath the wheat and Veile would react with characteristic fright. You'd think Veile would have gotten wise because we were all skulking around waiting for his reaction.
And one time he got left in a stall, and I don't mean a horse's.
And then there was Bert and his primadonna's. Just why do these girls have to have a hotel room?

No clue!! Please give us a clue! :-)
How about Alice Debany? Alison Firestone?
Judge licensed in all AHSA divisions? Yes it was "Uncle" Joe Vanorio (god bless him)! He talked me (and parental units) into rescuing a Lippizan from certain meat packing (who, incidently, turned out to be a wonderful horse). He showed me (in the midst of famous hunter, jumper and eventing trainers), to listen to the plethora of horsemen, but hear what my horses had to "say" first. I learned a lot about how a horse thinks from him.
He was licensed in 21 divisions (back then it included Walking Horses, Apps, QH and other breeds who have since left the AHSA).
He was the only one. One other held licenses for 20 divisions.
YES WE DID HAVE CARS AND ELECTRICITY BACK THEN! heehee

I believe Joe's son Dick is still at Kentucky Stables near White Plains. My mother and I stopped in to visit Uncle Joe there in the spring of '97, less than a year before he passed away. At that time, Uncle Joe would still spend a lot of time in a chair in front of the barn, watching the activity in the ring.
At one time, a friend of his was trying to organize his story and memories into a book, but unfortunately that project wasn't ever completed. That would have been the ultimate horseman's guide.

Well the trainer was Joey Darby and I can see the mare in my mind. But the way I see her is misbehaving and Joey then showing us all how to do his patented "Joey Darby Spin" to make her see the error of her ways...I do remember it was sold up North later that year.

Leslie won her Maclay on a pinto mare name Suzette. She belonged to Sharon Cole. When she showed in the Fla. class, she borrowed a pinto from Missy Clark named Scout-a-bout. He was eventually sold to the Firestones. She wore show clothes from the year she won. It was great!

My friend's favorite horse was unbraided, poulticed, wrapped, and pulling out of the driveway at the Meadowlands when the judges realized they had lost her number.
He got the "Indy 500 pit crew" tack up and braid job, and the kid finished third in the class. He ground tied in the parking lot for the excitement- that's why he was the favorite.
Off course- Sara Willeman did that, but not in the 80's.
