You are REALLY testing me. I'm not sure I can answer the whole question. Let's see... Rodney rode him, Peggy and ?
Peggy owned him and I don't know who brought him out unless it was Cappy Smith.
I never saw him in person, although he looks like, from his pics, he was a great jumper.

Not a great jumper, but ridden by many people, it seems. Joanie showed him with the team many years ago. Last seen by me in MN as an A/O hunter with a friend of mine named Debbie Dickman.

YD: I have a question! Do you know what the CH stands for in the name CH A Sweet Treat?
I don't know the answer, I just wondered. Saddlebreds that win at their Worlds Championships in KY get a "CH" prefix put in front of their name.

Maybe I need to change my name!
CH is a "champion" designation (horse won blah blah number of points in A-rated classes).
WC is a world champion (me! me!)
RWC is reserve world champion
The name would be announced (always) as

Sly Arrival, originally owned by Robin Hansen, then sold to someone back East where he competed successfully in the junior and A/O hunter divisions. AHSA Reserve Champion Jr. Working Hunter one year in the early 1970s. Some of the people who post frequently on this topic should remember him!!
Raggedy Ann, originally owned by Nancy Kraemer and then sold to Tippy Bushkin, who showed her successfully in the junior hunters both in California and on trips back east.
The Godfather, found in a pasture by my trainer, sold to Dianne Grod who competed him very successfully in the Open Jumper divisions in California.
The well known hunter sire Truck Drivin' Man was owned by my trainer as well.

Well I never rode in a Corinthian class because I was a junior on a pony but I did do lots of appointments classes. Here's what I remember:
1. sandwich case
2. sandwich in case. yes, that's a separate item--especially if you've forgotten to pack one and end up trying to fold a concession stand hot dog to fit. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
3. hunting whip
4. stock
5. canary vest
6. black jacket
7. boot straps
8. spurs
9. leather gloves (on hands unless it's raining.)
10. string gloves in girth (unless it's raining, then switch with leather gloves and pray they actually fit because you never had to wear them before /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )
I think that's all I can remember. How'd I do Shorty?

Don't forget the sewn in bridle, I want to say double or pelham....yes being old means forgetting somethings in the mid-late evenings. I hate to admit it but yes I do remember the. And the little flask that went in the sandwich kit I'm pretty sure was supposed to be filled with either tea or sherry - was anything else allowed?

Nov. 22, 2001, 02:06 AM
Soooooooooooo many years ago they not only did Appointments Classes, they did Ladies to Ride Appointment Classes. That gave some of us ladies additional chances to ride good hunters as the owners really wanted them to go in ALL the classes.
The flask usually should have Sherry or tea but Brandy or a "toddy" that would warm your soul when the weather got chilly was used alot. And yes, they actually did open the sandwich case and the flask. An occasional brave judge might take a pinch taste of the sandwich but several felt it was their job to make sure the "toddy" was fresh and not left over from another show!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif
Also, a large "safety pin" was required on the stock in case of an accident in the field the stock becomes a bandage and the pin secures it. Buff or canary breeches, FLAT bridles (no rolled, raised or fancy stiching!!), regular cavesson noseband (no dropped, figure 8 or anything else).
AND THE GIRTH ! ! Oh my don't forget the girth. A flat triple folded leather girth without elastic, no "shape" to it and the open folded part away from the front legs. Also, properly done the girth would be equal on each side of the horse...same number of holes from the top.
Oh Yeah..the bridle would be offensive if the buckles weren't the same on both sides..aligned with the eyes so you had extra room to go up if the bridle broke. (The bit was always stitched in and I believe the other buckles were an option but I could be wrong).
Properly done I think I remember they should have 36 to 42 (or something like that) braids depending on the length of the horses neck, the tail should be braided WITHOUT the end on the outside in a snail curl cause that would get caught in the brambles as you galloped through the woods..
Geez, we had a great time, sort of makes you tear up a little and realize just how much of the tradition of our sport has been lost in the name of getting the show done. I guess Appointments bacame such a bother they quit having those classes....... /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Makes one laugh and giggle with glee when you remember Diane Grod being shifted from one big horse to another and riding a bunch in the Ladies to ride.... also Lucy Stewart, Linda Hough, Diane Langer (Mitchell then) to name a couple.
Wow time flys..... bring on the advil... I get sore and tired just remembering it but it makes you sleep smiling!!!

Saddlepads NOT allowed.
Stirrup pads NOT allowed.
Breeches with three buttons at the knee showing - strap going between the buttons.
Definitely a sewn in full bridle first choice. Then, perhaps a snaffle, then pelham. Bit and reins sewn in.

You must be VERY young! it was 12 or 13 braids (or maybe 15 or 16) depending on whether or not you had a mare or gelding. (I could NEVER remember which - and 13 braids on my small pony wasn't too bad... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

This post reminds me of a class years ago at Washington. Burgess Meredith needed to get all the stuff". Ira Schulman had his tack trailer at the end of the warm up ring and was more than happy to sell him everything he needed. Except when it came to the hound couples that had to be hung from the dees on the side of the saddle (remember those?)
Not having the hound couples, Ira took two leather lead shanks, coiled them up and sent Burgess on his way. Everything was working beautifully until the last line, when the hound couples came uncoiled and were trailing out behind him. Not to be deterred, dear Burgess just kept on trucking and even got a call back! I think the judges just wanted to see what he was up to! Not bothering to recoil the hound couples he proudly trotted in. After checking all the appointments, one of the judges mentioned, those were mighty long hound couples to which Burgess quickly answered they were Irish Wolfhound couples!

Bavaria came after I left, but I think from Evergreen with Mike and Cathy Crooks.
Devon was at Sterling with Diane and Johnny Johnson and owned by Florence Flemming. He was ridden by different riders like Michael Patrick, and Meg Woodington. I keep thinking that Devon came from out of the state though.
The third horse, Double Talk, I do not know again after my time. Of course he could be a horse I do know but don't know a new name to.
Don't forget Olde English, a Washington bred TB. By Kaneohe Bay, owned by Woodbrook and sold to the East Coast as a USET horse.
Sue Butts rode him in the hunters out here.
Also "Gus" another Washington Bred TB by Hitter owned by Judi Greer and sold to the Busch family. I cannot recall his show name with them, but the Busch family put a full two page colour center spread on him about a year ago in COTH when he passed away.

Dublin, You don't remember Bavaria? She was sold to Shanna Johnstone (Megan's mother) who was actually allowed to ride her A/O once or twice :O))) but mainly she was a champion 4' horse. They turned down $1M for her.....
And in Corinthian classes --- in NYC, do you know how hard it is to find a person in a deli in mid Manhattan to make a meat sandwich on plain bread, then cut the crusts off, then cut it diagonally twice, to form 4 triangles, then wrap it in wax paper? They think you are less crazy if you show up with a gun and try to rob them. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
As for those damn little buttons on the pants that the boot straps must go between, I had to rob buttons off my shirt sleeves and sew three of them on each leg of my canary breeches, above the top of my boots, so it looked like I had buttons on the breeches. Oh, anyone want a sewn in pelham bridle? What a waste of a good set of reins and cheekpieces. I guess that is why the shows finally just went to formal attire. The rider dresses up, but the horse doesn't have to.
As kids, my mother used to tape the hunt whip after she put the 2 curls in it and just the right length tail so we would not drop the tail and scare our ponies when jumping. Then the tape would quickly come off for the call back and appointments check.
It was fun in those days, wasn't it?

Nope, my showing and riding career ended in 1973, after my sophomore year of college, and I didn't even get interested in horses and the show scene again until years later, in the mid-80's. This of course tells everyone how old I really am!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

LOL, rexford! I loved the Burgess Meredith story.
We used to "wrap" our whips before we jumped. Take the thong (is that the right term?) and wrap it around and around the other piece (my brain is on total spaz about this /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ) kind of like a maypole, then knot the end.
Hey, we were on ponies, which meant we went so fast that we were only a blur anyway. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (I swear my sister had the fastest round in the history of Upperville--the judge simply watched agog--after which our trainer said, "okay no more spurs for you even if it is appointments.")
Anyway, then we'd uncoil the whip and carry it loose when we jogged back in.
Ruby G. Weber
Nov. 22, 2001, 01:25 PM
Seems the further the working horses got away from the hunt field, the more "tricks" we came up
with to help them "tolerate" all those appointments.
We would tie the hound couplings, with yarn to prevent them from banging on the horse's side. The wither pad was there but unseen. We had a limited number of sewn in bridles and of course none of them had the desired bit so...suffice it to say, lots of changing before the jog. LOL. It was actually quite comical, at times.
No one could ever find the stock tie, nor the stock pin.
We ended up carrying a trunk just for appointments.

I'm, sure the real Alex Trebeck would be very proud... but there are a few more questions...
What was the difference between an Appointments and a Corinthian Class ?
If you wore a Pink Coat What else did you need to carry in your pocket ?
Who wore a top hat, derby or a hunt cap?
Who wore the ribbons down on their hard hats ?
Who wore the ribbons up on their
hard hats ?
I'll never forget the time Atrie Hawkins was walking the line at Upperville and looked in my sandwich case, asked if the sandwich was fresh ? ? When I told him it was, he walked away eating it ! I said I had another horse to ride in another division, and he said the sandwich was great & he would remember !
Oh, yes, I won the class !

I had defer to my fox hunting (sometimes) spouse for the answers to several of these ?'s.
Gentlemen members of the hunt wear top hats.
Ladies wear derbies.
Professionals wear hard hats with the ribbon down. Juniors, ribbon up. (?)
In the pocket of a pink coat? Nowadays, you must carry your hunting liscense. I'm curious to know what was carried yesteryear.
Not sure about the diff between Appointments and Corinthian but I think it had something to do with hunt club membership or actually having fox hunted.
But...the truth is out there.
Shorty
Nov. 23, 2001, 02:53 PM
Corinthian Classes were hunter classes in which the rider had to be the member of a Recognized Hunt.
Appointments classes were open to any rider.
Both classes were judged on performance and appointments.
Riders who wore a pink coat, a dark blue or black coat which had hunting buttons and the hunts collar were required to carry a card ( in their pocket ) from the hunt stating they had earned the right to wear them.
Those classes were fun, racing around making sure you had EVERYTHING on the horse and rider !

The A show was called North Shore Horse Show. The grounds are in Stony Brook NY. The Smithtown Hunt also ran a show at the same location in the summer. North Shore Horse Show ran the week after Piping Rock, early in September.
After North Shore Horse show ceased running the grounds were used for a series of A shows run by Hugh Cassidy.

Shorty, I imagine you remember this. Back in the days when Squeaky (who was 11.2) was champion at Devon, there were only small and large ponies. At Devon, the first small pony hunter class had two divisions, one for ponies 11.2 and under and the other for 11.2 to 13.0.
The 11.2 and under division usually had no more than five entries or so--as opposed to 40-50 in the other "half" of the class--and only one real contender aside from Squeaky (a pony named Vacation Time). Consequently Squeaky always got a "free" five points (the value of a blue then) to start him off. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The one thing you couldn't do with Squeaky was take him out on the trails. He would go just so far, then decide it was time to go back. If his rider didn't agree, he'd put his head down, tuck it way back between his front legs and kick up his hind feet. Syndy was a good rider, but she got catapulted every time.

Does anyone remember a little black pony from the same era called Babyface? He was about 10.2 and FAT. One year his owner entered him at Devon (the lure of that "smaller" class division where he was pretty much guaranteed a ribbon.) The only problem was, you couldn't enter just one class, so he was put in the whole division.
Small ponies jumped 2'6" then and the stake class was held in the (then) Wanamaker Oval over a big course. Babyface huffed and puffed his whole way around and as he came to the last line which included a rather substantial wall, you could see the whole audience begin to hold its breath. The wall was bigger than Babyface.
That little pony never even hesitated. He galloped up to the wall, jumped up like a goat and landed on top, teetered for a moment, then jumped off the other side and continued on. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I know TF foundered (Kevin's "know-it-all" attitude taking over), I know that he was third in the President's Cup with KM, but I didn't know that he rode in the '84 trials. Why was he at Nimrod? I thought he was at Kevin's after he foundered.
Boy, was I pissed when I heard about the foundering. Kevin and I had some MAJOR fights re: feeding the horses IN MY CARE at Sandron. When he bought TF, who had horrible feet and was very hard to shoe and keep sound, he immediately wanted to make changes. I think Joe talked him out of it, but when he took the horse home, there wasn't anything we could do about it...

OK. The answer to LP's ? must be Syd. I'm stumped on the Windrush ones.
To Pahrslvr...Ruxton, by Abundance eventually became a winning working hunter ridden in that divison by Charlie Weaver. EB may have, at one time owned Ruxton. EB en famile had something to do with bottling beer, I think.
Lemon Springs was a palomino hunter who Sandra showed in the A/O's in her single days.
Hunter was Bootlegger.
lauriep
Dec. 12, 2001, 01:53 PM
and Marc St. James owned WR. After the Olympics, he told Syd that he would send her and a companion (yours truly) ANYWHERE she wished to go in the world as a reward for hard work(long before they went belly-up). She chose Bermuda, and in Sept. of 1984 I got an all expense paid trip to said island and $600 spending money to boot! The St.James' were always lovely to me and I am eternally greatful to Syd for taking me.
Bootlegger was Melanie's hunter and he was retired at Stillmeadow when I last saw him; I think Pam even rode him in the hunters (?) before the bad times came...

Ferndale. You may be correct. I was thinking of Mark Perry, whose finger was in the pie at some time. Hence the RJ connection.

Is by Doctrine x Finesse.
She was the last foal out of Finesse who died shortly after foaling her.
We drove the horse van to Spokane,Washington that day and picked the wee baby up and brought her back to EEC where we took turns hand feeding her on Foal Lac.
My mare Bumpkin immediately took a shine to her and I have photos of Bumpkin and her grazing in a small paddock built for her and her adopted mum. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I had the pleasure of seeing her in 1978/79 at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, England and have not heard anything more about her, or if she ever had foals herself.
