Is the ringmaster Honey Craven? I remember he did lots of the shows in the area back then.

By the way, the show in the picture was the Ravenhill Horse Show in April 1966. It was held at Ravenhill Academy (Convent of the Assumption) in Germantown/Philadelphia, PA

And the horse and rider just visible behind Terry--the roan with the wide blaze--is Wee Ken with Ricki Rothstein.

You want braids, I'll give you braids.

This is Terry's wonderful pony, Hot Shot Kid. The rider, however, is Terry's younger sister, Susie. (At least I got the hair right! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

OK, these aren't as old as some of the other triva questions, but what year did they move the Lake Placid Horse Show, and why (be specific!!!)?.... and what was the name of the show everyone used to go to on L.I. before the Hampton Classic?

I think it was the North Shore Shore Horse Show. They had GREAT /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif exhibitors parties.

We went to a lot of shows on L.I., but the one before the Hamptons was C.W. Post.
Answer from yesterday, the horse that James Hulick won the Ox Ridge Grand Prix on was Willie Wonderful.

LaurieB --Now THAT's a picture of a horse show! Big tents lined up and a huge field. Just one row of cars by the tents (other cars were parked in a separate lot).

OHHHH, I am taking a trip down memory lane, with that picture! Back in a while......

Hot Shot Kid did not have the prettiest of heads, did he? He was a GOOD jumper, though, as I remember. Was he a small TB?

Shorty
Oct. 7, 2001, 05:36 AM
Hot Shot Kid came from Dick Atkinson, (who later had the stable at the corner of Goshen & Providence Roads)-I think he was Terry's first trainer, before Junie Kulp at All Around Farm.
Hot Shot was a great jumper and got a very good ride - Terry was outriding all the other kids back then.

LaurieB
Oct. 7, 2001, 06:28 AM
No, he did not have a pretty head (as you can see in the picture.) But he was a great jumper, and almost always placed in, or won, the hack. Also, his body was pretty well made, so if the judge could overlook the head, he got a low ribbon in the Model as well.

I doubt if he was a small TB as he stood only 13.2, amazing by today's standards where if you're not "right up to size" you're nothing.

By the time I got to All Around, Terry had moved on to horses so I never got to see her ride Hot Shot. Susie showed him quite a bit, and did well, though of course not as well as Terry. She was a phenominal rider.

Emmet declares ineligibility for Shorty's questions. Could be deemed insider trading.

But Geez...I can't remember the name of that oh so familiar face (ringmaster) and he did all those shows back then.

Abby...Willie Wonderful! Pretty sure he was by Setubal.

Jumper from 1966. Gustavas? Gone Flyin? Fru? Got me!

The LI circuit used to be? Post, North Shore and Piping Rock.

Shorty, was that Honey Craven, it doesn't look like him tho...

And, the picture of Hot Shot Kid, whom we all lusted after, was this at Ox Ridge? Or the Fairfield Childrens?

Okay all you trivia monsters, do you remember the pony Coupon??????? Who was the trainer, who is still alive by the way and who was the owner...

I will never forget the year the tents blew down at AHRC. We had upwards of thirty horses there, and shipped them all commercially to Hugh Cassidy's. Turned around the next day to go back, set up the entire barn again, and show the next day. No sleep at all for days, which was the norm back then. Emmett knows! I look back and have NO IDEA how I orchestrated all this and kept going on so little sleep.

Oct. 7, 2001, 11:29 AM
...and Lake Placid... scary times. Tents falling down. Tornado in Detroit.
And also the flash flood of Sugarbush. Sometimes horse shows can be disaster areas, too.
A reminder folks-- when you're on the road, make sure you always have a phone number in your grooming stall/tack room or on the front of each stall. How many times have we ALL found a sick, injured, or lost horse, and no idea where it belonged or who to contact... /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
And leave out a halter and rope for each horse!

Ruby G. Weber
Oct. 7, 2001, 12:15 PM
Remember the show, somehow I don't remember the tents leaving. Although I do remember them falling out of position at Lake Placid. There was also a tent and flood incident at Chagrin, circa 1969.

Back to the jumper of yore. Miss K-K-K-Kate on the beautiful chestnut Untouchable?

Speaking of indoors, does anyone remember the "Summer Place" tack room?

Here's one fer ya. Whose retirement ceremony was the direct cause of very few riders making it to what show on time to do the second year hack?

MBS
Oct. 7, 2001, 12:19 PM
I remember that year the tents blew down. I was back working for Fairfield and I was driving in with Cheryl Davis when we saw the tents blowing away.

Sam was a dog that was adopted because he looked just like a dog that Bruce had before him. She was lost, or we thought stolen, at the CW Post show that was at the track. I don't remember the exact location, it was one of the first shows I went away to. If you can remember that dog's name, I will really be impressed!!!!

Does anyone not recall the year they moved Lake Placid up the road (to the ski jump area?) in 85?? And it was all because of the Wally Byam convention that was booked at the horse show grounds... I do believe Wally Byam was the inventor of those silly looking airstreams!!!

If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.....

buryinghill1
Oct. 7, 2001, 02:14 PM
The Airstreams! Wasn't it before 1985? Seems like years ago...
I recall the average age of the airstream resident was 70+ something, and Acres Wild had a chart of "deaths during the airstream convention." It was sick (and funny). It was Felix's idea, if I recall..

But, if I am wrong, I will start a new question: who owned the above jumpers?

Did "Miss Katie Monahan" ever win the Maclay?

Looks like Lindy Patrick became a "Mr." for the Maclay...(who can name the wonderful horse she rode?)

"Whose retirement...?" - Kim's Song! A legendary party, still remembered by all who were there; the WIHS was the show. And those who DID make it in were, shall we say, less than up to par?

Abby, Airstreams in Tampa, 1979, the first year I did FL with J & C, I believe!

What VERY well known jumper owner lived in and supported the industry in my home state and had horses out east too with a VERY well known trainer, and subsequently with this trainer's proteges?

HOT SHOT KID wound up at a friend of mine's farm in the 80 - at the ripe old age of 30 something. He was my friend's nephew's first pony and went foxhunting once a week on a lead line.

He died s few years later, and I think he was over forty!

Leslie showed him some in the first years also. I don't remember where they got him from, although I wonder if it was possibly from Otis Brown, given his name. I don't think he was sired by the well known sire who's offspring all have Brass in their names. This Brassy was a quarter horse. Cheryl showed him with pretty good success for a few years. He qualified for indoors, including New York for I think two years, and got ribbons there. Cheryl had another small junior at the time, Send No Flowers. Brassy was retired at my barn!! Somehow he ended down here (hehe, probably b/c of Brownie, who is friends with my trainer--I dunno though actually)...he is owned by a mid-50 year old lady who walk-trots him and gives him SO many treats. He is probably still as well-groomed as he was then (she grooms him for 30+ minutes every single day!). He lost an eye due to some kind of freak accident before he was brought to my barn, but it hasn't affected him at all! In fact a few years ago (maybe 3 I guess) he was still ouch-free and trotting x-courses!! Since then he has shown some signs of aging and I don't believe he does anything but trailride (at a walk) around or munch on grass! But he's a delight...recently he left my barn to live permanently in a field down the road where he runs to his heart's delight.

The remarkable thing about Brassy was until he started being "ouchy" (he was never pushed to do anything, in fact he used to perk up when being ridden) he would find the spots, count his strides, do the change, all of this AUTOMATICALLY! He was the ultimate, ultimate trot-x king! In fact he used to canter figure-eights in his private paddock and do flying changes...!!

It's great to hear about his past! If Cheryl wants to get in contact with his current owner just for kicks, email me and I can give you her number.

OK,

Part (A) What was Mrs Clarence Nagro's name before she married Clarence and

Part (B) What is the name of his daugher (extra credit given if you can name her very fancy pony of the early 1960's)

Okay how bout the answer to b) Sandra Nagro. But if you ask me what her married name is, I don't know...She's also a judge now..

Other dated questions with the Nagro's
a) Who was the trainer there for years?
b) What was the name of their barn?

Upperco,

We must know each other in our former lives. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I learned to ride at Hilltop in the 1950's. Sandy was mother's "4th daugher" and she came on all our family vacations with us. Clarence was not, how you say, focused on the needs of a young teenage girl, so mother took over that role since Sandy was best friends with my two older sisters.

PS Her very fancy pony was named Mischief and was actually a small TB. She was one of the first very type-y "ponies" and she and Carol McNamara's gray pony Jellybean traded off top ribbons for several years.

For the 60s, I think the three most consistent producers of good ponies were

Gwynedd, e.g. Thorwell, Wishing Well, Oh Well, Nip 'n Tuck (all with prefixes dropped)

Highfields. e.g. Highfields Town and County, Highfields Master Thom, Highfields Unforgettable

Farnley, e.g. Farnley Nimbus, Farnley Icing, Farnley Galilee

I've never heard of Crebilly. Where were they based? Who were some of their good ponies?

I was showing ponies all around the area where Tanrackin was located during the 60s. Mrs. Waller had three ponies that were being shown by Meta Boykin, all of them English imports: Pollyanna, Menlo, and Welland Valley Early Bird. I never saw any homebreds of hers anywhere, though those may have come later (produced from the mares mentioned above?)

Where did Weatherford go? Wasn't she going to give us an answer to this question? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Janet
Oct. 13, 2001, 07:45 PM
Well, she certainly WAS breeding them. I lived across the street, and saw the pony foals each year. But I don't remember any of them being particularly sucessful.

I know that, by the time Chantian died, she was standing a WelshxTB son of Chantain called (I think) Tom Thumb, but I don't remember who he was out of.

By the early 70s she seemed to have switched her focus from ponies to Conformation Hunters (I think one was called Royal Secret).

Shortly after I moved down to Virginia (in 1979), Susanah Schroer was showing one of Mrs. Waller's horses in the Junior Hunters at Upperville.

She is still alive and still has the horses, though I don't know if she is actively berreding now.

SLOOPY ( who was originally called H. O. Sloopy ) was purchased as a green horse, from Bernie Traurig by Harry Gill for Rodney Jenkins to ride.
( Harry Gill owned Idle Dice at the same time.).
Patrick Butler then bought Sloopy for Steve Stephens to ride, the horse & Steve went to Gladstone for training (the way it was done in"the old days") and Neal snagged the ride.
Sloopy was always a bit rowdy. His biggest win, aside from his medal, was the Gran Prix at Aachen.

Lord Sutler was not the only very nice hunter to become a Philadelphia Police Horse... Wee Salute and Wee Three are only two. I can't remember others, but I know there were more.
These horses had a very nice life- they only walked around the city for a few hours a day and the officers who got the really famous ones were very proud of their horses and knew all about their records, etc.

I am so bad at trivia, but this is a great thread. Hey , does anyone remember a granprix rider, older male, from I'd say in the late 70's early 80's , who over top of all the jumps was COMPLETELY unattached to the horse except for holding the reins?? I saw him at Ox Ridge and to this day have no idea how he did it. maybe British?? He was a great crowd pleaser!!Did well too as I remember ( and that seems to be all I remember)
PS How does one get those little gremlins in your message???Thanks

Nations Cup: Was it Frank Chapot?

Kevin Bacon: He was in Holland last time I worked there, training and selling young horses, doing horse dentistry and making Kevin Bacon foot stuff which was wonderful. When he got bored he'd take one of the young horses out, teach it to fetch his hat, then teach it to jump a jump with the hat in its teeth before returning... even if the jump was WAY over there. He's as funny on the ground as he is in the saddle!

Nov. 4, 2001, 03:20 PM
I remember watching him also. He would also turn his horse loose in the ring with the tack still on and the horse would jump the fences around the outside if he won, once he did it at the Garden. The horse's name was Chichester and the rider was ? I want to say Kevin Bacon, but I am afraid I am thinking of that name because it is in the previous post.

YEA, NUTMETG!!! It was Frank - with an incredible record of 46 WINS in 85 starts!

Piero d'Inzeo (ITA) (1947-1979 OMG /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif ) is second with 42 wins in 107 starts (not as good a batting average!!!)

BILL STEINKRAUS is third with 38 wins in 87 starts.

The British Team from 1979-1993 must have been John Whitaker, David Broome, & Nick Skelton, as they are all tied at 37 wins. As has Hans Gunther Winkler.

Michael Matz has a great record of 23 wins (42), while Kathy Kusner & Mary Chapot are also tied at 22 wins. Leslie has 19 wins, Joe F has 17, and Margie & Norman each have 16 wins.

This is all from the SHOW JUMPING MEDIA GUIDE 200/2001 that Samsung released - great statistics on both NC and World Cup classes! Very much fun!

It actually list all the riders ever in NC classes, so if there is anything anyone wants to know, just write! LOL

Answer (sadly) to the John Bauman question of where is he now: John died --- questionable death. I hope I am not spreading false information. If so, please correct me immediately and I will delete/edit this post)
