Great! We can complain about the swamp that is Majestic Meadows every year at the finals!
Now come on, I know there are others out there...
I think I recognized a certain ammy adult with a little grey guy named Torey on an arab thread, and someone named Hillary whos profile says she is from my town sometimes posts.
Yeah I know that it is sad I noticed all of this - what can I say, college is boring as hell /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Vermont: Isn't that where the old Bob Newhart show took place? So, do all of the men wear plaid and carry around an armload of wood? Oh no, wait. That's the Canadian men... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sorry, shouldn't stir up anything, what with you guys being so close to the border and all!

Dale or "C Dale Scoot" in the hunters. Noel Purcel, Dale is a Welsh Cobb gelding about 13.2 hands maybe 14.2, dapple grey maybe white. The girl rides at the Pony Farm in Temple. Dale has a half black and half pink nose, when I had him, he had a roached mane. Flashy mover.

If anybody has seen this pony, let me know, i want to see how he is doing.

I havent seen the pony, but I am sure if you went to one of their shows (usually one a month starting in May) you would find him. I am sure he is doing well though, the McDaniels are really nice people and PF is a nice place. They always have a ton of begginer divisions - it would be a great place to start out your little paint when she is ready to show. Bring a raincoat and a dry pair of socks if you go though!

Ahhh, yes Becca. NH is a lovely place. On one hand, its nice because you know everyone. On the other hand, it sucks because you know everyone!
And yes, Majestic Meadows is like that EVERY YEAR!! I only hope to someday escape! At least most of Gretchens kids really can ride- I have seen them growing up and have witnessed it. However, it does get very very political, not just with her kids. The judging at the finals was very odd this year. A trot down in the juniors by a certain little chestnut got a call back (selctive blindness anyone? And it wasnt a GA kid). Our finals were absolutely pathetic. If you train with who I think you do, I always see her with really cute horses that she picked up for cheap. I also loved your curley pony!
Second Chance, where do you ride?

Becca- My farrier knows you... MDS Horseshoeing aka Matt Sanborn. He has mentioned your lastname before(Payson is it?)

There is a person who occasionally rides flash on hacks and I believe she goes to UNH and comes up here for visits, in the Warner/Bradford area.

Now, I am clueless as to who this is.

That's cool that you went up there yesterday. I was up there Saturday having a lesson with Heather Smith who teaches Equine Science at UNH and is a part time instructer there.

I am involved with MKPC, and started boarding there at Cathy's in 2000. My big red tb used to be the 2nd stall on the left as you walk into the aisle. Now, The name plate for my horse is on her stall she is going to be in.

Sometime you are gonna have to see my horse in person! But maybe I will run into you at some show.

Are you showing in the NHHJA this year? I am doing the local 4-H circuit and maybe some hunter shows.

Do you know anybody at Freestyle Farm in Tempel(i think thats where it is..) who has a horse that's named Epic? I used to train with the person who orignally owned him.

Now to say, I ride with Michelle( Cathy's best friend)

So, geez, enough typing. Do you still have Matt as a farrier, if so ask him if he knows Nellie At DCF.

Second Chance, I think I was at that Stonegate Show! I would have been doing the puddle jumpers and schoolings with the little light grey mare I rode - think I was champ in the puddles (yeah I know, whoo hoo, puddles- but she was a blast to ride, I miss her alot). That was a while ago, and I didnt have anyone in the ponies so I dont remember you (and I usually do remember everyone - especially ponies!)
And I happen (lucky me) to be attending UNH for now. Once you have ridden in that indoor you will never go back!

I noticed you edited the name becca - dont worry thats not where I ride - I have always ridden with echo valley, partially out of habit and lack of funding. There is a little bit of uproar there right now though, so I am gettin the hell outta dodge, so to speak. I am currently between barns, if you will... I am actually possibly about to get 100x poorer and become the owner of a excesively small, excessively stubborn DWB cross mare (its a long story). So if you see a short ammy adult getting run away with and/or kicking for an hour without moving a step, that might be me! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Ok guys we need to recruit - right now we are ahead of the NJ/PA clique, but not by much. Just because they have actual rated shows in their states doesnt mean that they get to have all of the fun!

The only thing interesting... I met Mclain Ward there and his horse and his mother!!!! Mclain won the day I was there too! I met Margie Goldstein- Engle there and Beezie madden. Lexinator:
Lol- Politocal central!! Lol- our judging is so inbred, its sick!!! My mom has considered getting on the committee to resurrect it- but decided we just couldn't bear to be involved w/ said president. SOME of gretchens kids can ride. Some have 1/2way decent horses, and campaign them into oblivion (1 in a Mil. . . ) The judging was VERY odd this yr. Though better than I've seen at a lot of the shows. I agreed with most of the top pinnings. But it was a bit sketchy at some points- and I didn't watch it all. I doubt I train w/ who you think I do : ) Debbie wesoja? Good friend of my moms, very sweet woman- VERY VERY hard worker. But I actually train with my mom in NH:) And thanks re: the Curly- he is a wonderful little trooper!!!! What yr. At UNH are you?? I have tons of friends up there!! (ok, call me random- were you at the Ms. Kearsarge pageant?)
Isn't Echo Valley being sold? No fun. . .
AND I will NOT allow condos to go into attitash. Not allowed!!:(

Second Chance: We know Matt well- isn't he awesome?! Has worked wonders on many of our horses feet too. Hes my hero, lol! I know Michelle from pony Club:) My mom was the MKPC D.C. before Cathy was!:) I'm at Cathy's a lot- I always help out w/ the show at the end of P.C. Camp- my mom judges for Cathy. I'll show NHHJA this year, but we do the New England Circuit too, so we basically qualify for NH medal, and hunter finals depending on things, and then we do our other points.

Anyway- Go NH clique!! Tres impressive!! Lol we'll have to have a party sometime- whats the big central hang out? Steeplegate? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Dry Clean Only
Mar. 5, 2001, 06:37 PM
Yes it is getting sold - that is part of the uproar! And dont get me started about a certain judge with a saint bernard and unruly child. She tends to like to 'spread the ribbons around' /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Also onced kicked one of our horses out for being 'too lame to continue' - said horse was not lame, just has an admitedly funny moving left hind, but also has clean xrays and vet report. If it wasnt a little funny she would probably haved stayed a schooly at Grazing Fields, instead of ending up a nice packer up in NH! /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I was sooo angry - if she wants to tell us our horse is lame and not to show that day, fine. But if she is going to kick out one lame horse, she ahd better kick them all out (which would completely eliminate some farms /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )

Becca
Mar. 5, 2001, 06:42 PM
My judging story- One judge pins lame pony in pleasure class. The lame pony (bad mover and none too cute to boot). The judge buys that pony right after the class. We weren't sure whether to be pissed (Our pony was 2nd to the lame thing!) or feel sorry for the fool who bought a lame pony.

and in this same class a child fell off of her 'pleasure pony' the judge stopped the class, had kid get back on, and proceeded to pin said child 3rd. Hrmpshg.dg. (my feelings..)

There is also a blind woman who judges the friendship Field shows (Sorry, think this is an echo valley horse- triple thirteen, or something similiar?) i was showing the Jr hunter in CT in the jrs and medal. Lost all 3 jr classes- to echo valley horses- one of whom (won all 3) could not jump, and TWISTED- it was sickening to see the pinnings. And I had taken refuge from the heat sand ditched my coat. Cost me (self promotion here /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif best medal trip- it was essentially perfect) to pin 5th. Its outrageous and ridiculous. You win when the judge is your trainers sister, etc.

Becca
Mar. 5, 2001, 06:45 PM
And yes- lameness would completely eliminate some farms- they don't get that showing on 97 grams of bute is illegal...

Dry Clean Only
Mar. 5, 2001, 06:53 PM
I must admit - that horse who now twists was my old Jr horse! He is a really good guy, and a great 2'6" horse (I scored in the 80's at our finals in the hunters on him under a 'real' AHSA judge), but... I did juniors with him around here and did ok (but they never put them above 2'9" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ). You probably saw him with the girl who rode him this yeah (she was shopping for a fancy new horse and her packer was lame). I love Gilly to death, but she and Marcus, well, not a match. He is far from scopey too, so it was probably very very scary. He got pounded showing this summer though, and his hocks look like hell - not the same horse I rode at all. As for Triple, that was the one that got excused. She is a little weird, but is the safest, easiest sanest thing around. I Love both of those horses to death, but feel your pain!

As far as judgeing goes, I dont really see the trainers sister type thing, just bad judging. Plus the same judges judge all summer, so they know everyone and all of the horses. Go figure /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi, I'm originally from Hampton Falls,NH and now live in CT. I rode at Green Acres Stables in the early nineties under the grip of David B. It was a lot of fun and learning, and some craziness! We had nice horses and we got to go to Florida every Winter! A big bonus when you have grown up with NH winters! Does anyone know what Green Acres is like now? It was kind of a cool barn, but needed some major $$ put into it and it would be a shame to let it rundown. I don't miss showing in NH really. It was a great place to get started but everyone should spread their wings.

Becca
Mar. 6, 2001, 07:58 AM
Lex- Glad she has enough sense to be mad at her- the poor horse is so sweet and honest!! I would have turned around and bit the kid by now!! I've seen Gretchen's kids at some of the bigger masss stuff, but never Janelle- is she doing it, or just NH?

Second Chance- I didn't know he had headed down! I'm at boarding school, so I haven't had a chance to talk to him since around November. And yes- said woman does show in NH- I saw her sale ad at Cathy's;)

RAF- Green Field or Green Acres?? I know a Green Field!:)

And you def. need to spread beyond NH. I started out in CT, so then moved up here, so it was never my "domain" to start with, but its def. fun to do as an "aside." I'd love to be able to escape to Florida for the winters! But alas, that evil school calls- mom and dad don't seem to want to let that slide.

Second Chance - I think I know what Foote you are thinking of. She is one of the nicest people in NH - she did the A stuff as a junior, then worked for Pony Farm, the Gretchen, but now has her own place. She is very quiet and I love the way she trains - never harsh or abrupt, very quiet. If you are looking for a horse definately go see what she has (heck I can probably tell you about the horse!)
RF- someone did finally fix up green acres. I think that they repaired the 2 story barn part so no horses would go falling through! I know someone who bought a horse from Boley when he was at green acres - possibly around 95/95? A bay TB gelding who turned into kind of a pycho. Also, after Beth had a 'parting of ways' with Boley, she stayed at my barn for a while. Green Acres now has several different trainers leasing space and individual boarders. It looked pretty good last time I saw it.
Weatherford- I dont know about places for sale in Litchfield, sorry. But I can tell you all about the ME medal finals, held in NH for the second year in a row /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Steve-

yep, your 100% correct. Michelle does take over training Allison's students. Allison is really nice, I went to UNH to help michelle and cathy and allison. Pilot was a handful on the ground but the minute allison got on him with the shadbelly and top hat and beige britches, he knew what was coming, That was before Morven Park Horse Trials. Hopefully he will end up doing Bromont in Canada this year!

Steve- no school today either?! its really yucky outside today.

I remember going to a show or two at Sign of the DOve! I think the Greater Mancester show was held there! The Rye Lions show in Rye used to be a nice little show that was run most like a hunter jumper show. Most shows in the eighties (in NH ) had Western classes, saddleseat classes and even some gymkhana stuff! My favorite shows were held at the Deerfield fair grounds. I owned a quarter horse so even though there weren't many classes at those shows for hunters they had quarter horse hunter classes, open and youth! My customers laugh when I tell them about riding at the fairs and my little foray into saddleseat when I was fifteen! I must say it was pretty fun!

I didnt go becuase I forgot about it! I usually go just because it is a chance to dress up, and most years I manage to get at least some award (shockingly enough I was one of the few people who could write coherently enough to get their scholarship). This year I was at a condo at Attitash - oohhh, tough choice, stay in condo at the Seasons and go skiing or trek down to Manchvegas on sunday to watch everyone complain about everyone else!
Depending on where I am riding we might see each other at a couple of shows. I am thinking of going up to Cornerstone in Belmont for some lessons, and also going down with the daughter of the current owners of EVF (you probably know of her, she judges around NE) to Cornerstone in Haverille MA for some lessons together.

I know! I wanted to do it, but since my trainer was paying for the whole shabang she didnt sign me up for it - hell that was the only class I had a chance in! When I heard the scores were so low I was seriously disgusted. Mellissa is the sweetest woman in the world and so are her parents! I once horse sat her place a couple years ago with Kelly (her main student who has kind of disapeared) and had so much fun. Her place isnt fancy but her horses are all so sweet. She used to give Maggie Macalary lessons back when the kids went to camp at Honey Lane( which is now that crazy Neats equestrian center place).

No lol, her farm isn't much, but its clean and safe, and her shows are cute (thought the judging leaves just about EVERYTHING to be desired!!)

The Horsemanship was a joke!! I heard that the winning scores were in the 50%s.. SO sad- I could have won it! god, lol, I was RAISED on horsemanship!! And I guess the practicum was even sadder.. pathetic!

The person who won it got in the 70's I think? (and if she is an amature I should still be able to do short stirrup, but thats a whole other story). The best score on the written part was only one wrong, but she didnt have a great medal trip and proceeded to pout and almost cry when she didnt win (which surprised me because she was never like that - maybe it was just a bad day).
BTW can you tell I am being a loser on my snowday and sitting obsessing over this thread I have created? I am quite proud of it. Its also a good distraction from english papers ( I am currently writing one about my life as a bus driver- can you imagine getting on a bus and seeing some little girl who looks about fifteen, and whos legs dangle off the seat is driving your bus /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ?)

I have also cried - my small pony dumped me at the third fince in the pony medal , our last show together:( . I think I hid in the tackroom and cried for a good two hours!
Yes I am indeed a bus driver - I am now an expert at driving around UNH in circles. Hey what can I say it was the best paying work study job, and they payed me to get my CDL-A!
See the lovely thing is that NHH&JA rule book does not go along with AHSA on many things, one of them being that our amature rule is still the outdated "25% of your income" rule. Hell I'm not gonna complain - if I can teach some baby lessons and still do ammy's I'll do it! As long as you dont win all the time (which trust me, I wont!) no one cares what rules you are breaking! /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Lexinator...ok now, this was back in 1979!!! when i started riding there, LOL..the trainer was Linda Evans, her daughter Lisa did some teaching too. I rode this 11.3 hand welsh called Bonnet. Rode lots and lots of ponies there!! And then when we got big enough my friends and I would fight over which of the "big" horses we wanted to ride there, LOL.

Sign of the Dove...had a big show every may at New Boston. We used to ship all the lesson horses out there for the day and show them, it was a lot of fun (for us, dont know about the horses!). Now it is Pony Farm, they dont hold that big show anymore but have a series of shows on their own property in the spring/summer that are a blast.

Has anyone shown at Furnace Brook Farm? I was a working student one summer and showed there- wound up with a champion, a reserve, and beat my trainer /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Great day!!

Jenny Williams (Furnace Brook) is my favorite person in the entire world, I think- she is awesome!! SO SO SO. . . her. And tghe Pony Farm little series is great- Kris Young does a fantastic job.

Lexinator:
Ohh, the NHHJA rulebook is a joke!! 25% lol. They don't care unless you beat them- too much. I'm impressed- I think I'd drive off a bridge driving a bus! Though, I guess UNH bus is better than some. I had a mental image of you driving 5th graders in big yellow bus, lol!

I love showing at Furnace Brook! It is one of the few shows that is still out in a field, which is fun. I dont know who owned it then, but
J Williams has it now, and for some reason I was under the impression that it had been in the family? She is very nice, and she and the kids she brings with her are the least snobby bunch around. The turn in there with the trailer is tough though - especially for Pony Farm, who comes during the summer with all the camp kids in the huge JR Hudson 18 wheeler! Who owned Pony Farm back then anyway? I am too young to know it as anything else.
Sprite, they now have several shows (NH Equine Humane and Weare Lion's Club benefit) at the New Boston show grounds - I like going because you can swim in the stream afterwards! I have great pictures of my pony there.

Hey Becca do you ever do the White Oak shows? My 'favorite' horse show memory this year was there, trying to coach two of our short stirrup kids who were having steering issues in their tiny little baby ring. Also, if you do go, let me warn you that the far end of their indoor is a killer! I have been cantering quietly around a corner to suddenly find me and my horse lying on our sides! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Jenny's mom owned Furnace Brook before her, i believe. Jenny taught me a lot sat her little pony club shows in my youth! (God, I'm only 17! in my youth..whats wrong with me?)

her kids are wonderful. Alison Enegeus is a great kid- all very sweet and some good riders!! jenny is great about getting you on a pony!

Never shown White Oak-I was warned to NOT go there- we heeded thewarning, and didn't go. Anything like the ledge at Finals? lol- do we not GROOM our rings??

No, of course not, taking care of the footing would be wayyy too easy! At WOF, its more liek the footing suddenly slips out from underneath you and BAM! on the ground. At least thats the warm up ring, not the show ring. The ring you show in isn't bad at all.
Aren't you so jealous of some of the horses Jenny finds? She got Sambucca for FREE from some lady's field (I think its just a free lease type thing, but still). Do you know where Toto is? He is such a gorgeous stud and throws babies that are carbon copies of him.

Pony Farm was always owned by the same people (Boo's family). " back in the day" LOL, Pony Farm was the name of the summer camp only, and the regular lesson series in the spring and fall, and the eventing clinics and stuff, were held under the auspices of Sign of the Dove, which was also the name of the retreat center (the camp lodge for those of you familiar with the place). When Boo and her former husband got divorced the camp eventually bought out Sign of the Dove after several years and now the whole thing is Pony Farm.

LOL Kris Young and I were in lessons together when we were teenagers...she is great, and a great horsewoman.

Their new indoor looks fantastic, its a long way from my memories of hacking thru snow in the middle of winter and lessons on the outside course in the rain...

kris is so nice! I miss seeing Ella around - when they finally found a horse that she was doing really well with (Spencer, the huge white guy, who once dragged me across a field at GMHA) she went off to college! Doesn't Boo's brother still own some of the surrounding land, and isn't there some tension between them about the use? Boo is always so nice to everyone. Last year before our medal finals, a girl from my barn (who went to camp there) had a horse that ended up having colic surgery. Boo let her free lease ChiChi (one of her larges) for a couple months to do the pony medal with instead! How sweet was that?

Ok, so if Majestic Meadows is such a drag, does anyone have any suggestions to where we could hold it in the future? Or should we just ask that the grounds be better kept up for a state final, that is suposidly featureing the "best of the best", if that's what you really want to call it. Or should it be who ever has enough money to go to enough shows to qualify. I find it interesting that it is easier to qualify for the equtation finals then it is to qualify for the hunter classic, you would think it would be the other way around.

NH is just screwy. Maybe we should make it like zones and only have the persons top 15 or twenty shows count?
The only problem with that would that it would end up being mostly people who do the bigger shows (like Denise's kids) and go do a few Senator Belle shows would end up cleaning up at our finals, which isnt fair to us poor kids on cheap horses who cant afford to do bigger stuff (no offense to becca - I know you do bigger stuff too, but I am sure you see what I am saying). So it is rather complicated if you talk about going and changing things. We just have to face the fact that some people are going to chase points no matter how you change the system!

Alex has told me that this is possible /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Attitash was always a big deal, being from NH - kind of an unattainable goal. The summer I was 17 I finally got to go and did the childrens jumpers. I didnt do great (I was scared sh#$less! and those courses are very, very long...) but it was something I didnt think I would ever get to do. It was also more special because of the horse I was riding - she was the horse I moved off of the ponies on, and the best mare ever. She had to be put down last spring after a bad colic, probably caused by a cancerous mass /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I would be so sad if they didnt have it - where else could a kid from the sticks in NH ride past Leslie Howard, McClain Ward and Peter Wylde in the warm up ring? Where else could you be in a low schooling class with Peter Leone and LEGATO jumping around in draw reins? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Lexi: thats the one- Siberian Stardust- tres cute!! Cute over fences, but yes, abit supercharged!! And Alison's little sister DOES have an attitude!
And no offense taken- our finals would be dominated w/ out of staters. The only reason any one not campaigning NH does Senator Belle is for the cheap NEHC pooints anyhow. and i DO think its a joke how its easier for Medals than the short stirrup hunters. Though i have to admit, i scam the hunter philosophy- only b/c about 4 people in NH can jump over 3'. But I don't want it to chqange- I can qualify for my medal in 1 show- who am i to argue?

The Corn
Mar. 7, 2001, 10:46 AM

Actually I have a question for you guys who show the NH circuit. When we moved here to the "East side" of VT a couple of years ago, I thought I'd try and investigate showing in NH. I got some prize lists from the NHHJA, but it seemed that there weren't any divisions above 3', either for hunters OR jumpers.

Now I remember showing years ago (possibly before you guys were born!!) At the Lancaster and Deerfield Fair Horseshows. Both had complete divisions for all kinds of hunters and jumpers, right up to an Open jumper division at 3'9"-4" with decent prize money. The jumper classes tended to be at night under the lights; the stands were packed and it was a really fun time. Nothing bothered my greenie ever again after showing at the fairs!! Although she has never quite recovered from sharing a warm-up with Arabs getting ready for costume class. They jingle!!

So do these shows exist any more, or what?

How is Torey BTW? He cracks me up, kind of reminds me of my old cow (Dry Clean Only) but with flea bites and a belly only half of the size!
Baymare, we really are a very local circut. We have some people who venture out of state occasionally, but we are mostly a bunch of kids lacking time/resources, so our little circuit doesnt have much big stuff. Deerfield still has the jumper classes, but I believe that they have kept reducing the number of classes and nights, and now only have a couple of classes. Not enough interest around here I guess /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yup - Seacoast Southern Maine - and I love it!

I was born and raised in NY (Long Island) and did the hunters for years and years there. Then moved to Dover, NH and lived there for a few years....I can tell you tons of stories about Green Acres and all its characters

From Dover, I moved to North Berwick, Maine but worked in Durham, NH. Was a founding member of the NNEHJA but got out of that due to ugly politics. Yup - showed at Majastic Meadows, Deerfield, etc..

Now I live south of Augusta, Maine and am an active member of MECTA (Maine Combined Training Association) and have never been happier! I have found my nitch in life! What a fabulous group of people and there are so many clinics, seminars, schoolings, events to go to (Snowfields is our only sanctioned one). I'm having a ball!

The Maine H/J Association is still new (about 4 years old?) but is working hard to promote decent hunter shows - certainly NOT like anything in NH, MA, NY, CT though.

Weatherford - I live about 10 miles away from the HUGE indoor facility in Litchfield, Maine and know a bit about the place. Been there a couple of times. My friend's father is the broker. Ask me anything you'd like about it!

Okay, I am forced to join in here! I remember when they had hunters at Hopkinton Fair, lexinator! I showed my pony at that very small show in 1983 and she spooked at the oxen teams all day! I even fell off one spook, in a class, landed on my feet, jumped back on and continued riding in the class and the judge never noticed and pinned me! Of course there was protest and I gave my ribbon back amiably. The show was held in the infield of a standardbred racetrack and it was a lot to cope with activity-wise. Deerfield was even more crazy with all of the shakey tails whooping and shaking plastic bags on the ends of whips! Nothing like showing at the Deerfield Fair in the "Open" jumpers at night. The jumps were no higher than 3'6-3'9 and very plain obstacles, but the atomosphere was absolutely electric! I rode with David B. back then and he made us NH kids pretty brave on our big dumbbloods. Hey Giddyup, when were you at Green Acres? We may know each other if it was around DKB's time. I would love to hear stories about the place no matter what time you were there, actually!

Is Jan Neill-Roberston still running her tack shop on Wednesday Hill Road in Durham/Lee? She is a hoot and I would often go there after work to pick up stuff.

Does the "Newick's" guy still have that new barn just down the road from UNH - 155 or 155A?

When I moved into Green Acres, Jeff White had the entire two story barn with all his morgans. W.H. had just started training there. Jeff White got married and moved out and the place was sold to the Hopkins. I moved my TB to the lower level of the bigger barn - which at the time was "THE" place to have your horse. I rode briefly with W.H. but he and his students were always helping themselves to my stuff (and I mean everything), so I dropped him. He was soon kicked out because.....well.....maybe I shouldn't say.

Rumors started that the Hopkins were going to sell and make Green Acres a development. The barn manager and a couple of us boarders started to scramble around for a trainer. I placed an ad in COTH and in came D.B. - much to my concern.

I could go on and on but after some more scandels, D.B. was thrown out and the place was sold to the current owners who are trying to make a go of it.

Better watch it, the NJ/PA clique is quickly approaching!!

Maine....spent a week camping last year right outside of Baxter State Park. We were about 100 miles from Canada, with mainly logging roads. Husband is at his glory....he has always loved it there and, at a moments notice, would pack me in the car, the horse in the trailer, and move there.

I, on the other hand, had some difficulties coping. No phones (had to drive 20 minutes to the closest store for a pay phone), my cell phone was a joke (although, if I drove down the road and aimed it a certain way between two mountains, I could get a signal, and, I cannot for the life of me, imagine coping with the winters.

We did see quite a number of horse trailers (mostly large stock trailers) on I-95 North. My husband kept saying, "look honey, there are horses in Maine!" Trouble was, they KEPT going north on I-95.

Gotta give you Maine folks credit.

Hey fellow UNH'ers! So nice to hear from snow-bound Durham. I drove the shuttle to/from Newmarket during the blizzard of 1978. From what I hear, this storm may have been even worse!

Is the Tin Palace still there? Can a visiting alum get a tour of the barns/riding facilities . . . puhleeeeeeaaase . . . it would be wicked pissah.

Hopkinton fair- lolol

I was NEVER allowed to compete there!!! All my friends would go- they won money!! And mo msays- No, honey- we don't DO fairs.

The number of times I was FURIOUS at her for that. In retrospect, thank god she never let me... Have you SEEN the way they go in those rings??

Although I used to have Pony CLub camp at the fairgrounds, and those are some of the BEST memories of my life.

Did any of you ever do the Concours D'Automne, 2-Phase event in October that was held up at the Fairgrounds? There was a spring schooling show there once too...

too much fun.

When I was in school in Virginia there was a girl who was from Maine, around the Freeport area/LL Beans. I just couldn't fathom who on earth could and would live way the heck up there! How dreadful! How backwards! How hillbilly! I assumed that everyone wore parkas year round, had no teeth and everyone was related. Yes - I really thought that!

When I got a job in Portland (Maine), I figured it would be some hick town, nothing to do, ugly people, no culture. WRONG! I walked to the art galleries at lunch time, shopped in the Old Port, went to the Museum of Fine Art, library, etc.. I was probably the ugliest person in the city!! I just LOVE Portland - it's just the right size = not too big, not too small. This is coming from someone who freelanced, had doctors, was a member of the Met, went to Lincoln Center, the Garden, MOMA, etc., in New York City.

I grew up a lot when I moved up here. I thought the only places on earth to be were NYC and the surrounding areas. I can't imagine living anywhere else but southern Maine now!

The Baxter State Park area is too far north for me! Kennebunk, Portland, Portsmouth (NH) areas are THE best!

NHH&JA no longer affiliates shows at Hopkinton Fair. We do affiliate with Lancaster Fair and Deerfield, jumper classes. They are a lot of fun. We need more people who jump over 3' so that we can fill these classes and get more shows to offer the higher divisions. There are tons of classes at 2'6" and under. I am glad that there is a place for those people and horses to show but we need to attract/keep our improving riders and horses. Otherwise, everyone just moves on to NE shows. So, if you are out there, come to some shows. We'd love to have you!!!
"Green Acres" is still a functioning farm but under a different name. NEPOBA holds shows there and if it isn't raining, the footing is decent. Two newer barns opened in that area, Winning Ways Stable and Hilltop Eq. Center. I haven't seen Hilltop but I've been over to Winning Ways. It is very nice. I hope they decide to have a show or two.

Giddyup, I was under the impression that Jan's was no longer open (although I could be wrong, I would love if I was!). Last I remember she was cutting down the hours of the shop to work for a vet? And now I have seen her name in the results of some sporthorse breeding shows. So maybe she is breeding a few colored sporthorses and other stuff? That was the only place I would go to before for 'big'items like saddles, coats, boots etc. I would be happy if she was still open, but I dont think it is. Cactus City Saddlery, right in Hampton, is pretty good though - I got my Ariat tall boots there and the woman seemed very noce and knowledgable (something unsual at many tack shops around here! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes - she was getting into paints back then. She had just purchased a gorgeous gelding from Virginia for her husband. A few years ago she had a big win at Devon in a breeders class for a paint youngster she owned. Good for her! Go Jan go!

Anyone out there using Jim Smith as a farrier? Wadleigh Falls vet group?

Its true that in order for NH to expand, we need to be able to encourage people to remain in NH as they advance. But the fact is, speaking from one who has done it, we don't stay in NH, or focus on NH because of the lack of organization in many parts. The judging is not subjective or quality- it often becomes incestuous. We need knowledgeable, credible, and certified judges- when I show, I am PAYING for the JUDGES opinion of me. I refuse to do that for a judge who is bad, or imcapable of doing his/her job.

When I go in a Jr Medal class, or a Jr Hunter, and am told that I am entering a class at 3' or 3'3-3'6, I want to be jumping fences at that height. I have YET to be to a NH show where you encounter that. Sometimes there is 1, maybe 2 fences maxed. Childrens Hunter's are frequently qualifying jumping 2'3-2'6. And then you put them in a final at 3'- what do you expect to happen? Consistency and standards need to be upkept.

Why do we flee to Mass, Vt, and the rest of the east coast? Because those orgs. DO offer the things we want and need in shows-the quality, consistency, and organization.

There are some WONDERFUL people in NH, and the atmosphere is fantastic- thats my favorite part of every NH show, seeing all the familiar faces smiling back. Its an excellent basis for an organization, but before we can expect people to stay into their latter years, we need to raise the standard of excelence, and produce the entire show, not just the atmosphere.

Did you bring a birthday card to the barn and hang it on Flash's stall? Just curious. Cathy is thinking of doing UNH horse trials with Allie this year! Geez, I guess what I'm going to be doing is being a groom for her..... maybe.

I so want to go there in May(or whenever the horse trial is) I got a quick view of the x-c course, I went there to the UNH dressage show with Cathy and Michelle and Allison who is both of their friends.

Katelyn - I cant say I know of any shows that far north! If you want "real" AHSA rated shows, you have to trek over to VT or MA. But there are plenty of one day shows in Maine and NH (although 6 hours would be an awful long drive for a one day show!). I know that Jen Bradley has been the one really trying to promote hunters and get some shows going it Maine. She even started a Maine Medal Final! I dont know her number though. There are plenty of shows in southern ME and several in coastal NH. If you get the NE Equine Journal you will see stuff for NH Hunter and Jumper Assc. and Northern New England H&JA shows. They always have numbers you can call to get prize lists and such things /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Good luck!!

Yes I was a bus driver (but I also washed dishes at Williamson/Christianson (??) dining hall). I did the Newmarket route and every now and then would do the Hampton Beach run. Are they still housing students at the beach??

I was a swimmer at UNH, not a rider (just started riding 1.5 years ago), so I've never seen the barns, etc. Where on campus are they? Out by the field house? Is the fabulous ice cream place still there??

The barn is down past (going out of campus) the field house, after the green houses. Its fairly nice - the stalls are big and all have rubber mats, its well lit and the horses are decent (quirky, but decent /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ). The indoor is really nice - it is big, has bleachers, mirrors and the rubberized footing. I can't ride in the tiny dusty indoor at home after riding in this one! You cant miss it- when you are heading into campus it is on your left, and the indoor and green barn are right next to each other with a few paddocks in front.

I dont think they are housing anyone in Hampton - there are so many apt places in Dover that they probably dont need to. They did have a lottery for upper classmen for on campus housing though - that did not go over well! A new dorm is also going in behind Fairchild and Huddleston (over the tennis courts).

I live in the ever so lovely Stoke Hall /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif - can't say that I love it, but oh well. At least I am not on the 8th floor! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The dressage rings are kind of far from the indoor (which is also where they have stabling for the events - they pull out the footing and put in temp. stalls!). If you head in to campus from the dressage rings, pull out of mast rd. extension and make a left, the indoor and barn are on your left. The office is also there, which is where you get numbers, stabling, they post orders, etc.

I didnt get a chance to help out at the event this fall (it fell on the same weekend as the Maine Medal Finals), but I did design the program /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif . I bet it is a great event. If you watch cross country I recomend hanging out around fence 3 is ('Fort Briggs, which is a bank and a drop), because you can see a couple of fences, or by the Palisades fence. Both of these ahve good views, but the Palisades is easier to get to (its on the Horticultural Farm grounds near the finish).

I nearly cried the first time I drove past it and saw all the houses, and haven't been able to bring myself to the museum that's now in the indoor. Runaway has been resurrected, (again, I think the place has 9 lives), and I hear they're doing really well.

Our drainage is sooo horrible, the whole place turns into icy then muddy rivers, lakes and oceans! The new owners are planning on doing all kinds of excavation and stuff to fix it.

Becca - I don't know if you have ever been to the shows at EVF, but they are planning on fixing up (completely ripping apart, grading, fixing drainage and re- seeding) that flat paddock below our riduculously narrow ring and making it into the course for the bigger stuff. It actually might turn out quite nicely if they get it done. I will keep you updated and you and your little sis can come to their show to get qualified for NH and ME!

OH MY GOD!!! THIS IS THE BIGGEST NEWS TO HIT NH SINCE WE ACTUALLY STARTED OUR OWN MEDAL FINAL!!
That would be so awesome Becca? Any hints on where she would possibly hold such a show? Your mom will become the object of much envy in NH when she is loved by all for starting such a show (she had better get a food tester LOL!).
