What is that one piece of clothing you can't stand? That one thing you just wish would go away?

For me, it would have to be the Seafoam Green jackets. I don't show on the big curcuit, so I really don't know how popular these really are, but truthfully, I just don't like 'em. No offense to any Seafoam-Green-jacket-owners!

I don't like the look of them in hunter classes. It's the cream color of the wool against the white fleece saddle pad.

My next least favorite is children on ponies with tall boots.

Giganticus bows on little children. Bows are cute, and I love the matched look but please!

Strangest: Rider wearing brown jacket with a solid medium brown shirt with barely visible brown monogram, taupe TS and brown hunt cap with her deep tan skin tone, brown hair and brown eyes. The rider also carried a brown bat. Her horse was solid brown with no markings, wearing conservative brown tack. They looked like a walking chocolate bar. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I also hate the salmon colored shirts and light tan jackets. Especially on the little pony riders; on the adults it looks okay.

I love the look of tall boots on pony riders, even medium and small, IF and only if they have a nice secure leg, good position and are an effective rider. Smalls and SS should wear paddock boots.

I don't think there is a fashion trend I don't like right now. I'm not too fond of black jackets in the hunters, but it all depends on the person.

Ohhh and brown tall boots and rust breeches. AHHHH the horror of being so ugly!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I love brown helmets though if they are naturally brown!

Apr. 5, 2001, 12:47 PM
I agree with the tall boots on small riders.. also black coats, kimberwicks (it is actually a fashion trend for QH hunters) sleeveless shirts, short sleeved shirts, rust breeches, show bows... hmm rubber boots... I think that's it

OK, I confess I really do not like faux animal prints... on people clothes, horse clothes, belts, shoes, earings, belly button rings, toenail polish, you name it...

Couldn't care less if someone else wears it, you just won't find it on my person or my horse /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Brown helmets really bother me. Maybe I should say "artificially made" brown helmets. Putting a helmet outside on a fence post 24/7 and misting it with lemon juice to get it to fade just seems like cheating to me. For a helmet to be brown you have to earn it. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just for you DMK, I'm going to wear my chaps with the zebra yoke and the matching zebra sports bra to Culpeper. My big 'ole leopard print earings and ballcap should help complete the picture.

LOL, DMK

I really don't care what people wear, and can't believe some people even take the time to notice what someone else is wearing. Anything that fits well is fine. I don't care for the pink/salmon/purple colors, my face gets really red in the summer and it clashes.

Ditto to whoever said Seafoam green jackets. I always thought it looked like hospital scrubs.

And this is just a pet peeve- Riders in polo shirts for equitation. It's horrid horrid horrid. If I can wear a long-sleeved shirt and a coat in 115 degree Texas heat, so can everyone else. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

grey britches
people who do anything but put their hair up in a hairnet over their ears
people who allow their jeans to stick out below their chaps
people who dress sloppily (is that a word?) to ride.. ever

REALLY dark show shirts
black jackets
rubber boots
saddles with suede knee patches

Oh no, Duffy, c'mon, wear the rust, at least in a hunter or hack class one time, please?

Hmmm... what do I dislike? I guess I gotta say the light huntcoats contrasted with the really dark or bright shirts. It just looks like the rider was trying too hard to make a fashion statement.

And I get a chuckle out of the horses wearing their leather GP boots for the flat eq class or the little medal classes.

Now, I shall reveal that my favorite outfit is my light brown coat/orange shirt, my horse always wears his boots in my eq classes, and further more, I LIKE my yellow wooly half-pad (although I use it alone, not on top of another pad in the show ring). /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Don't EVEN get me started on the animal prints. Personally I hate any printed square pad (cutsey or otherwise) for any one who is over the age of 10. Throw in a matching girth cover and polo wraps and you'll see me go into convulsions. But then again, I tend to be a conservative person in general. I had some bright blue polo wraps on my black horse the other day. I thought I was being pretty darn wild.

Ms.Rid- You might like them now, but I was showing during the tail end of the fashion trend. Didn't like them then, don't like them now!

Jo
Apr. 6, 2001, 07:02 AM
JMHO but why in the world should you guys care what anybody else is wearing or using? If someone else wants to use a printed pad, or wild polo wraps, or wear a short-sleeved coat or rust breeches, LET THEM. It's their own decision and you don't have to get all bent out of shape because somebody is not conforming to YOUR ideals of what a "perfect" ensable should be.

(Donning flame suit and climbing off soapbox.)

Nickelodian
Apr. 6, 2001, 07:49 AM
Like I said earlier, I'm a conservative person who likes conservative things. I have an opinion that differs from many other people. Wild to me is bright blue polos, wild to others is a leopard saddlepad, polos, girth cover, with matching halter. But that is just who I am.

DMK
Apr. 6, 2001, 08:47 AM
OK, Jo, to be fair, the question was about "fashion trends you just don't like"... Have we gone so far that we can't dislike something? It doesn't mean I don't like the person wearing it for heaven's sake, and hopefully that person isn't so insecure that they think their entire worth is all wrapped up in what I think about what they are wearing?

Lord knows, if you read about Inverness' plans for me and Culpeper, I think we can safely say she is very comfortable in her faux animal print garb /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, and just to set the record straight, I like that puke green TS color. I don't like TS', but I make darn sure my Millers are that puke green color, but I don't get my panties in a twist when somebody else doesn't like 'em (see, I knew we could bring this back to underwear if we tried hard enough)...

The only good animal prints are on belts or socks, since you can't always see them, and its not like walking into a safari park. I HATE black tack on hunters, as well as black jackets, plain white shirts....Has anyone been to Bevals(NJ) latley? I absolutley adore that light tan jacket w/t the dark red shirt that is on the display manikin dude on the desk at the clothing section. And there is a really pretty grey w/t very modesty purple stripe in the plaid.(Luv it!) But The seafoam just doesn't look good on most horses, makes them look stupid! I don't particularly(spl?) like the 2ft tall kids in tall boots. If they are taller, or on a large small, or anything bigger, thats fine. Kids in shadbellys are fine if its for a classic, but not at a c, or b rated show....The fashion horrors somtimes could make me HURL(rubber boots, rust breeches, brown talll boots, bad braids, not clipped wiskers.....) The brown helmet thing looks kinda cool, I like it. I don't like riders w/t purple shirts if they're on a chestnut. Reheads should never wear purple! It depends on the pattern and actual color, but I don't really like the blue shirt, green jacket/green shirt, blue jacket thing....I don't really like it if people don't have TS, but it doesn't make me go "ewww" I just really like the look of TS. And dirty anything is baddddd!

I for one, love to get other's opinions on all of this. Langshaw is very well-known on this board for giving the ultimate in turn-out advice. Do I still love those halters with the zebra print going up the side? Yeah, I admit I think it is pretty cute, but would I bring it to a show? Probably not. When I spend my money on something, I like to get the most use for my dollars which is why I love to get others opinions and advice on what is the best way to go. If you don't like the advice, just ignore it - of course it isn't the end all be all you can't win if you don't dress like this, but I am glad for posts like this (otherwise I may turn up at a show feeling trendy all decked out in my bigger than life show bow, brown dress boots, rust breeches, and my saddle with big squede knee patches /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Yes I am obsessed with turnout I love making me and my horse look their best. I definitely voice my opinions (ok maybe I forcebly (sp?) voice my opinions) about turnout to the people in my barn. and rust britches. All fashions start out as 'unfashionable' until a few brave souls venture out and make a 'statement' and the others follow in droves.

So please, Duffy, strap on those rust britches and lead the charge!

We took a small paint pony we picked up at auction to paperchase when I was 17. It was only her second show and she did great (didn't move real well, but it was a blast) Anyway, at 17, I put my hair in two braids, and wore jodphurs and short boots. Miniwelsh, I was joking about doing that for my next show with my large pony (especially if I can't find a pair of tall boots that fit). They may figure out that I am not 12 if I show in the adult classes, though.

Horses and riders in the show ring should have apparel which fits properly and is sparkling clean. Shiny boots, the color or manufacturer doesn't matter, shiny bits and clean tack. Clean saddle pads of whatever type is appropriate. Ill fitting breeches, boots or hunt coats detract from the overall picture.

What I DO find unattractive at the horse show is mounted female riders in tank tops or some other skimpy shirt. Call me conservative, call me old fashioned but don't come to my stable and expect to ride if you are wearing a shirt that belongs on the beach!

Here's a list that will surely make even those with the strongest stomachs hurl /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif :
-Rust breeches (I honestly do not think one could conceive of a more GROSS color to make BREECHES for heaven's sake!!)
-Rubber riding boots (Really, even thought many people will tell you you can't tell the difference YOU CAN and it's not for the better)
-Animal printed helmet covers (Actually, any printed helmet cover is quite horrifying and the more refelective and glittery the worse they are)
-Show bows (Ya know, the beavertails? The clip's with the little hairnet attached? /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )
-Brown boots and brown shirts (Boots should be black and shirts sould not resemble your horse's road apples /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
-Riding breeches with leather patches that match the color of the breech (I know I am really weird for even NOTICING this, let alone taking a strange, unfounded, dislike to it...)
-Sleeveless/Short sleeve riding shirts

I'm sorrry if I offeneded anyone who owns any of these items, but this is just MHO on fashion no-nos!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Okay, here's my outfit for my next show:

Helmet: My usual Troxel schooling helmet, covered by one of those stretchy velvet covers.

Hair: Recklessly tucked into a two foot velvet show bow/net combo I found on Grand Prix. Hopefully the giant bow will distract the judge and she won't see how I peek down at my jumps.

Coat: Black of course. It's oh-so-slimming.

Breeches: Well, they used to be rust, but I left them out in the sun and now they've sorta faded to a pinky/peach color.

Boots: Brown. That'll add a nice contrast to my black jacket and really show off my leg position.

Bridle: Black. Borrowed from a dressage friend. It will show that I'm into cross training.

Martingale: Havana. Again, a nice contrast to the black bridle.

Saddle: Some old thing that's way to big (makes my butt look smaller). It hasn't been cleaned or oiled in years but the squeaking acts like a metronome and helps me keep my rhythm.

My horse of course, will go with a grown out, needing pulling, unbraided mane. Preferably, it will fall half on the right, half on the left. That way, it will be much easier to grab if I run into trouble.

IMHO most horses in the hunter divisions don't need a standing martingale. The martingale became a fashion statement sometime in the mid 70 to late 80s. Now it is almost de riguer, and I confess that horses in a hunter division seem incomplete without one now, but that's only because I have become used to seeing them on all the horses.

Question: When was the last time you saw a jumper go without a martingale (running of course)? I'm convinced a lot of them don't them either.

As for the anti rust breeches and anti cordovan boots brigade, get a life. I think the current fad of TS literally baby poop green color is revolting. Classy is a pair of buff breeches (you know, the old Harry Hall style), Cordovan field boots, and muted plaid jacket. Simply divine. I loved my rust breeches but would more often wear them with black boots and a navy or gray jacket. The wonderful thing about rust is, not only do they not show the dirt as much as other colors but they are quite slimming on your legs.

It would be nice if the showing community had a tad bit more lattitude in dress code, and a lot more interesting to watch. Velvet collars anyone?

Let's face it, we're all insane to one degree or another.

We participate in one of the most physically active recreational sports, one that requires bending our arms and legs and slapping our bums in a saddle all day, not to mention the calisthenics of squeezing a 1,400 lb. horse around an arena with our legs. Plus we sweat and create a cloud of dust, which we then ride through.

Yet we do all this is the most uncomfortable, ridiculous get-ups ever created for a "sport". We are indeed slaves to fashion. And I'm wearing some of the biggest shackles! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Girth covers are hideous, they detract from the overall picture, esp. if they appear to be well-used and they gape and wrinkle. If your horse has thin skin, you can buy covers made out of a neoprene-type material in brown to match your girth, they aren't so obvious.

I also think it looks better when people wear spurs at a show, to me a person doesn't look quite finished without them. If your horse doesn't need them, you can always wear dummy spurs.

Jo
Apr. 7, 2001, 09:43 AM
IMHO that's stupid to wear spurs just for the look. Isn't that the same thing as wearing a martingale when you don't need it? (Just for keeping records, I don't use a martinagle on my mare at all.)

Whoa there, Jo, I just said I think it looks better. You seem to be getting a little het up on this thread... take a deep breath now. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Isn't much of showing about "the look" that you present? Why else would we be debating the pros and cons of rust breeches vs vomit green, brown boots vs black. I mean, they all do the same job at the end of the day, don't they? If you've got a beautiful leg on a horse, the spurs accentuate this.

Just MHO!!

I hated showing without a fleece girth cover in the hunters! Not only did my last horse have somewhat sensitive skin, but unlike Annie and Blinkie, I love the look! However, I would only use Wilker's fluffy best, and nothing else. And if it was at all dirty, forget it.

My barn was one of those community stuff barns where there was just a big ol' girth trunk that you grabbed any old girth out of that would fit when it was time to show. Every girth had a brown or black neoprene cover, as Annie previoulsy suggested, but I don't like the look of those at all! One thing is for sure though, they do make cleaning a lot easier!

I also can't believe all of this criticism of black jackets! I can understand the hunters, but in the eq? It used to be (not so long ago) that black and dark navy were the only colors riders were really "allowed" to wear! My favorite coat ever was this gorgeous Tailored Sportsman jacket I had in black. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Then again, in all forms of fashion, I am a "black is best" kind of girl... you should see my closet! Why not? It goes with everything and is just classic! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Basically, if you ride well and your horse goes well WHO CARES if your coat is black or a lovely muted PLAID! And what's the deal with the rust breeches? Someone must really love stains and laundry because I LOVE them (esp for an 11 year old boy) This is SOOOOO petty! The europeans would be laughing since thier outie pony tails are beating the snot out of our double hair netted posing princesses in the international arena. I avoided this thread til now cuz I KNEW I would go mental over it...so there..I did. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Annie, I'm not getting all "worked up." I was simply stating my opinion, and I personally wouldn't wear spurs just for a "look." I never even realized that people wore spurs just for fashion... I thought they were a functional aid when needed... I guess that's just because when I see spurs, I think weak ineffective leg or unresponsive horse. /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I HATE it when people have their ears sticking out of their helmet. It is so unattractive! Even if I didn't have hair to put over my ears I would buy a wig to show in or something LOL OK I guess thats not a trend...

I really dont like the seafoam jacket either, it is just gross on any color horse.

I think spurs look worse! well, mostly on the people in a)little classes, under 3', or sometimes 3' ones too b) the people who are riding in the 3'6 classes but completely cannot ride. it doesn't look too bad but i think it is like saying, "my horse is untrained to my leg, or my leg is too weak to get my horse forward" (btw i ride with 1/2 inch spurs in the pre-childrens and i will readily admit that i have no leg) in the medals, bigger jumpers & hunters, and pro classes, it looks good, as in "spurs are the extension of the leg." it really isn't like its a big deal though. they are just little metal things on the back of your foot.

I think horses should NOT show in standing martingales but should school in them as they are a safety precaution against breaking your nose if the horse rears or throws their head up. i think they should almost never be used to keep a horse's head down though. (almost because there might be some special situation).

Piped collars!!! I know they are popular, but I just think they are really ugly, and so limiting. I also don't like rust breeches. They are fine for schooling, but I don't think they look good in the show ring. I am also not particularly fond of Regal Crownes. They are sooo pretty, but I have problems with the way the business is run. Won't get into that, to prevent any helmet debates or the like. And, of course, anything that clashes, especially pony rider's bows when they do.

Apr. 8, 2001, 05:30 PM
okay, I've been lurking on this thread for a while, but here goes the GM input (again, again, I know)
HE thinks that spurs & stick are de rigeur, and "part of the uniform", and I agree, especially in the jumpers. I'm not sure how I feel about a stick in the hunters, but like annie, I think every horse should be ridden in spurs, even if they are little itty bitty ones. This is not for fashion reasons, in the jumpers, esp once the fences get to a solid hight, or when they could be spooky, you better believe I'd want some small spurs to get even the hottest horse of over the back rail of an oxer, and even the most bombproof schoolmaster is bound to look/ stick off the ground to something sometime, and then I wouldn't hesitate to tap 'em once behind the girth.
In the hunters, I think spurs keep a horse focused, and are just good for support.

now, for fashion: I DO think spurs look better, but that's besides the point. A spur fashion trend I HATE, and it's most prevalent in the pony rings, is when riders have their spurs pointing down at drastic angles...it's just ugly.
Also, I don't like those jackets that are light tan, but aren't plaid...they're like this solid beige, a little lighter than TS's, but then they have this tinge of grey...I've seen so many riders with them. NASTY.
Also, I have to confess I don't love TS's to begin with. I think they are poorly cut, and an ugly color...also, I know a lot of people who's TS's have bust open at the zipper b/c their trainer wants their breeches tighter...and has anyone noticed that they fade really easily?
And I do agree that the standing martingale trend is wrong, right up there with the eq horse pelham trend...

-- T-shirts and sweatshirts with ridiculous logos and slogans, e.g., "Shut up and ride!" or "Dressage riders do it at X."

-- Spur straps in anything but leather. I want to take those nylon straps and set them on fire.

-- The people who gave us the Show Bow ought to be paste wormed. Heavily.

-- At shows, any amount of bare skin showing between wrist and forearm.

-- Transparent plastic harness on helmets.

This concludes my crankypants presentation. Paisley

Oh Paisley, I HATE those slogan shirts, and my parents ALWAYS buy them for me. I have so many that I have never even touched. They make me want to gag, but I always act excited about them because I know they give them to me because they want to show me they care about what I care about. I have the 'mother mucker' shirt, the 'Happiness is owning a horse' shirt, a 'night mare' shirt, and tons of others. eugh.

I do like plastic harnesses because they help disguise my nonexistant chin...I look almost normal with the plastic harnesses /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I have been riding in unapproved for forever, but am to wussy to take the harness off. I just know as soon as I do I will be tempting fate and fall off.

I have to say that my new shirt looked absolutely smashing with my coat this weekend, I was so excited!

But, want to know the biggest horror at the horse show? An eventing rider wearing one of those saftey vest things!!!! I have never actually seen one of these in person, and they are quite ugly. I can only pray that they will not come into fasion in the jumper ring ICK!

Yah right thats bs.. You want me to go around the ring like a speed demon.. I would I know how to use spurs I haved used them on my last hunter but my new horse is a hunter/jumper and is sensitive to leg. I know it may have been your opinion but I just dont understand the logice

I used to school in a Martingale but I took it off and my horse goes even better without it and to tell you the truth he looks better to.

I'm amused at the strong opinions re something as fleeting and inconsequential as "fashion." Heaven help us if we were all alike; we'd be bored to tears!

For the record, I like:
Black coats w/tan or beige breeches;
Brown coats w/tan or beige breeches;
Colored shirts and white shirts;
Hunters w/o martingales;
Brown CO helmets (ribbon down);
Pikeur breeches
Polo shirts in hot weather.

I don't like:
TS in any color b/c they just don't fit me;
Any brand of breeches in puke green;
Seafoam green coats; and

ANY coats in hot weather (I'm an athlete, not a fashion dilettante).

The WORST trend is the junior riders that are rude and ungrateful to their parents who sacrifice so much for them to be able to ride. I've heard so many girls snap at their mothers at shows, it really floors me. Mom: "Honey, do you like that girl's coat? It's such a lovely shade of brown." Daughter: "That is SO 10 minutes ago. AS IF." Or the juniors who make fun of other riders' outfits. That is downright classless. I guess once they have to foot their own bills, they will be singing a different tune!

As far as I'm concerned, pretty is as pretty does.

I feel bad for those that spend so much money on "the look." Put that money towards more lessons, that will earn you more ribbons than fancy silver spur straps.

Going to await the UPS delivery man, my new shirts are due to arrive today. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I have on for riding the totally level-headed Swift horse. It is UGLY. I wanted the spiffy Tiperrary one, but wasn't too thrilled about paying $300 for one, so I got an Equi-something one. Front looks okay, sticks out funny because of my chest, but the back - whooo! It has this little turtle shell tail on the bottom, which smacks into my cantle every single time I post. But, if it's going to save me, I'll keep wearing it. Might even (gasp!) wear it for our first few schooling shows.

I also hate those slogan shirts, hats, everything. I'm so very tempted to just put a huge lot of them up on eBay - so far I have, "Barn Goddess" "Manure Spreaders Union" "Barn Goddess" Hat, "I whisper, but my horse doesn't listen" (Gag me!!), and on and on.. plus, about 30 tacky sweatshirts with screen printed horse heads (largely Arabians, for some odd reason) that my cats sleep on.

Things I dislike:

Beige jackets, shirts and breeches.
~don't these make the rider look naked?

Short tall boots.
~yes I know thats a contradiction...thats why i hate it.

Too Short show jackets....and too long.....

Snobby pony kids! Be happy, who cares if you chipped! I do it all the time and *I* have to pay, NOT my parents!!!

Nylon halters. They just look so out of place. if you cant afford leather, at least get black...not hot pink.

People who do not spend any time with their horses at shows (except riding) I know some people have lots of horses to show, but to me, part of the fun of showing INLCUDES grooming etc. (although grooms are wonderful help, your horse should know YOUR face first, not your grooms)

Things I like:

People who cant afford to show trying their hardest to fit in and make do with what they have. I give these people ALOT of credit. They are usually the ones who kick @ss too.
- This includes grooming for themselves, warming up their own horses, paying their own bills etc.

Olive jackets. Im an old hunter green girl, and I cant just make the move from hunter to grey, so Olive is it!

THIN Leather belts. They look so classy!

Clear harnesses - sorry, I know they can look cheezy but they look better on me than the doeskin. That blends into my face WAY to much and it looks like I have a GIANT head.

Conservative show colors such as navy, hunter, mauroon, pale yellow, silver etc. No purple or lime green for me!

Later!

OK since you asked nicely, here are some more icky trends:
The too-tight throatlatch (gets another mention because it is sooo stupid).
Tall boots on tiny kids.
Tiny kids on huge horses.
Too fancy mounts. (ya'll know what I mean, and noone's mentioned it yet)

I don't like the slogan or screenprinted shirts etc but I DO like the ONE hat that says BARN RAT..it's made for little kids, but I want one!

I would really like to know how these vests can save your life or spine on a hunter course. I thought (although I know next to nothing about them) that the vests were meant to protect cross country riders from the solid jumps they might run into. Like if a rider comes off while jumping a 4' wall thingy it would help then.

I didn't think that even eventers did the stadium phase in those vests.

Exactly what would be the point of one in a hunter round where the jumps all give way, how exactly would it save lives?

Apr. 9, 2001, 11:12 PM
Langshaw, I humbly and good-naturedly beg to differ!
The worst fall I ever had was schooling a hunter at home over some planks set in jump cups. I fell back first and the planks didn't give way.
Three years and countless hours at the chiropractor later, my back still isn't "right." Had I been wearing a protective vest, I wouldn't have suffered nearly as much or for as long. It was just as bad as landing on a solid fence. Maybe if I had been heavier, I would've brought the planks down. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
My friend who broke her back years ago, riding a green bean hunter, plans to wear her vest at an upcoming show. Safety is often more important than fashion.
This said - I primarily event now, have a vest, but won't wear it except in competition for cross-country. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I know, I know!

Mine is people wearing spurs who have a terrible leg and heels that seem to love the sky and jab their good-natured horse with every stride. My old school trainer always said that spurs and a stick were an "earned" item, not a given, and I see too many people showing now who obviously never heard that advice /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Trainers should remember that although these artificial aids work wonders, trheir students should be able to ride most horses without the aid of either.

I don't like "trends" period.

But I'm the type of person who decides for myself what I think looks nice on me or my horse.

I have traditional colored coats and not so traditional - I buy or don't buy based on my own personal taste. If my trainer or the fashion police don't like it - too bad!

I think the TS mentality is humerous especially those who bash rust breeches - TS makes rust breeches so to say you MUST have TS breeches then bash rust as a color is an oxymoron in my book. And BTW George wears light grey quite often.

A mother at our barn purchased a lovely light brown tone on tone plaid jacket w/white piping for her daughter. She mentioned that someone suggested rust breeches but she thought rust would be "bad". I said I thought rust made sense since the TS greenish beigh IMO clashes.

If I could find a nice pair of rust breeches you can count on me getting them. I have a hunt coat that IMO doesn't look quite right with tan/beigh/greenish breeches.

I've had fellow amateurs compliment me and felt the "disaproving" looks of others on more than one occasion. The fact that something I wear could distract another is somewhat amusing. But then again in the horseworld as in the "real" world women really dress for OTHER WOMEN! Men (or judges) really could care less... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My recommendation is wear what make YOU feel good. Granted I will often "help" friends be more daring when choosing new coats/shirts and I will give my opinion (if asked) if I think something is/isn't right for the person who is planning on wearing it.

Just ask Kahuna - I gave my opinion on her new coat (it's stunning dahhhling) and the shirts she had selected. One of the shirts didn't thrill me - it wasn't a bad combination just wasn't as "wow" as another she had chosen.

1.Brown helmets (I agree that they should be naturally brown; no cheating!)
2.Dressage whips (unless in dressage) or colored crops(TACKY, TACKY TACKY!)
3.Custom made tall boots on riders ages ten and under (unless on a large pony).
4.Rust colored breeches (NO! DISGUSTING!)
5.Short-sleeved shirts, not even for hot weather.
6.Sea-green jackets.
7. Rubber boots, very cheap, show a little respect for showing!
8. Bows on kids doing large ponies. For leadline, okay, but anything else, NO!
9. Beval pads are SOMETIMES okay, but not at A shows.
Other things that are bad on some people, but are really okay:

2.Custom-made jackets (especially on slightly overweight people; even if you are a good rider, just show your really good points, not your not-so-good points).
3.Bubblehead helmets; some people can make them not so obvious, but others need to get a Charles Owen if they want a certified helmet.

Hmm...The horrible awful people who can't ride for their life, yet are on some super-fancy imported horsie.

Rubber Boots-gross. they look like something I would wear to muck stalls. yuck.

Colored Hunt Coats: Navy, Hunter, Black...hmmm maybe some other colors, various shades of blue. I like pinstripes....Plaid has got to go.

People in SUPERTIGHT breeches that look like spandex. And i agree about the knee patches shouldn't be the same color as the breeches.

Badly clipped horses...they look like those mullet haircuts. eew.

Ooh and straps not in their respective keepers.

Anyone under 13 in tall boots( unless they are really super tall)

Crooked helmets and shirts that stick out. The unkept look is horrible!

I understand where you are coming from but some kids *MUST* where tall boots if the do childrens hunters or jumpers ect. also. IMO it would look silly to see a children's hunter rider (horses) wearing jods and short boots. That is why *SOME* pony kids wear tall boots, but yes, I agree that vogels may be a bit much for a child that is still growing(but in my case I ALMOST had to get vogels because no boot would fit my foot so I needed a custom make. Ariats saved me!).

My Dislikes
- The pony-tail thing in hunters and eq. Ok in jumperland
- Animal Print and Neon polos, leave them at home
- Just a beval pad to show in
- Brown boots
- Dark showshirts and Light jackets (also Hunter Green and Black jackets)
- Light colored tack on dark horses
- Rust Britches
- Nylon ANYTHING (black nylon halters for bathing and nylon fleece girths are OK)
- People showing in half chaps
- Eskadrons in the Eq, at least go for some leather boots here!
- Tall boots on pony kids
- HUGE ribbons in pony kid's hair (like you can't see the kid's face because the ribbons are so big)

My Likes:
- The green TS
- Pastel show shirts with dark coats
- Hair up under helmet
- Leather leads, halters, and boots
- Beval pads UNDER show pads to show
- Nylon fleece girths
- Dark havana tack

Thats it, for now /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I HATE SKUNK HATS!!!!! Waaaayy too trendy, IMO. But I have one. /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I went into the tack store and told my mom and the person that I DID NOT want a skunk hat. I tried on every helmet (that wasn't an outrageous price) and NONE of them looked good. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif So I tried on the International skunk helmet and decided I'd get used to it.

BUT... I'm going to put a Spongebob sticker on the stripe so my skunk hat will be original. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I saw an item on ebay I expect everyone will be wearing soon. Thigh high riding boots. Just in case you come off in the water jump, you'll have hip waders on!I don't know how to post a link, but they are nice.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That's hilarious! Now every time I see a pony rider with red bows, that image will pop into my head of some little kid running around kicking people! LOL!

I really am not a fan of rust britches....
Or all the new hair styles!

Hair up in your hat with a hairnet all the way!!!! WHOO! hahahahahaha /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

i LOVE the bows on pony kids....i think its adorable...

I hate :

SKUNKS
RUST breeches
that little pony tail thing. (I think its hideous)

Once some one asked me how come my horse was so sweaty and my response was :
"honey...if You were in between my legs for 2 hours you'd be hot and sweaty too!"

Dislikes-
-Rust- I'm not one for rust, but whatever floats your boat. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
-Show bows-Okay, no.
-Brown Tall boots
-Sleeveless or short sleeved shirts
-Little teensy weensy kids that just learned how to walk running around with cell phones and four walkie talkies driving a golf cart.
-People who never spend time with their horses and get angry with them when they don't perform well enough because they haven't ridden the horse in two weeks and expect it to show perfectly.

Likes-
-Almost any color coat-Just not black in the hunters.
-Any color show shirt- Whether light or dark as long as it goes with the coat.
-Almost any belt as long as it isn't...tacky.
-Black polos.
-Beval Pads
-Beval Boots-I love the look of them.
-Tailored Sportsmans...I love the color and I love the way they look as long as they aren't skin tight (goes for any type of britches) and they are slightly baggy.
-Well oiled tack-Just looks better.
-Horsemanship and sportsmanship-The gracious winners, the gracious losers, and those who really appreciate the fact that they are abled to ride, because so many people who would like to can't.

Rubber boots
Boots that are too short or ill-fitting
Grey breeches
Skin tight breeches
Show bows
Messy hair
Hair without a hairnet
Short sleeved or sleeveless shirts
Using any type of equipment on a horse because it's asthetically pleasing, rather than because the horse needs them.

I can come up with plenty of other trends used in schooling that I don't like, but I don't even know where to start. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Likes:
~Conservatively coloured jackets, such as navy pinstripe.
~Subtly coloured show shirts; no neon pink or screaming lime green please!
~Buff or beige breeches in natural fibres (read: COTTON)
~Proper jodhpurs on juniors
~Conservatively styled tack to suit the horse.

Dislikes:
~Puke Green TS breeches; hate the colour and the material; just wrap yourself in plastic.
~Tall boots and shadbellies on juniors riding ponies. Just plain tacky.
~Faded helmets, naturally or otherwise. Ruins an otherwise crisp appearance.
~Tack with miles of overdone stitching and chintzy brass tags everywhere /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
~Horses who are beyond the ability of their riders wearing harsh bits so that their passengers can control them, since they haven't the talent to ride, but they have the money to buy.
~Tight martingales on any horse and any martingales on horses who don't need them.

I'll stop here....

I can't picture this colour, and I hope it's not the colour I think it is!

I really don't like those light light tan jackets; IMO jackets should always be at least a couple of shades darker than the puke-green TS's (which I love /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ).
