Bringing the Portola Valley Classic up again. I will definitely be attending the Grand Prix, and possibly some of the hunter classes as well, with my green and tan COTH cap firmly implanted on my head!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Any chance any COTH bb'ers might be able to attend?? I think it would be a fun get together - and last year COTH personnel were in attendence, covering the show....

Also, is anyone else still thinking of going to the Pebble Beach shows? I think I recall from previous posts that Merry is out??

I might be at the PVClassic (to spectate) - I'm going to Hawaii for vacation somewhere around that time so I don't think I'll see the Grand Prix.

I will also be going to the Pebble Beach Summer Classic - I'll be showing week 1...

And OF COURSE I'll have my COTH hat on! I'm going to try to get it embroidered when I go to Brookside in a couple of weeks.

What about Menlo? I won't be showing, but I'll be there to watch for sure!

"Oh Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!"

I may go to Pebble this weekend to watch, but am not sure yet. (Birthday Sunday too! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

Portola Classic for sure! Not riding this year, so I should be able to come over to the jumper ring to watch with you Dublin! I don't have a COTH cap, but I have a West Coast Active Riders I might wear or a big straw hat I bought down in Indio... Just a few weeks away. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

That would be great, CWP. Can't wait! And I should be at the Menlo show, Splendid - I had forgotten that one....

Unfortunately, Menlo--my FAVORITE show to spectate--always falls during our annual trip to Wawona in Yosemite. When I was a junior I used to skip the trip to show, but now I can't really justify it to the husband and friends since I won't be riding /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Coreene
May. 18, 2001, 11:24 AM
CWP, I bet we could come up with a list of wonderful ways to justify it!

When half of California goes to Menlo, the other half goes to Huntington Beach. So I shall take that week off work and do the HB thing (talk about a nice cheapie vacation!).

I saw the Brawley Farm Prize Lists sitting on the table at our stable when I went up to the PNW Horse Show in Monroe today.

I doubt Elliot will enter, but perhaps Mallory and I will venture down for a few days.
DD you should come meet us there!
This show is lots of fun, and limits the number of entries I have heard. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I had a good time today. Because....

Dr Hansen gave Poncho a clean bill of health!!!
No riding for a week until the farrier fills in the unusually large hole from the largest abcess either the Vet or Farrier have ever seen and puts a shoe on that will hold the foot together.

Otherwise he is sound!!!

I sat in the sun today and chatted with horse people I have not seen since the late 70's!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I was so happy to have some remember who I was just walking by and saying my name in hello!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

CWP, I bought a straw hat in Indio too!!! There is one place that has a great selection there. Mine has a leopard print scarf around it...I love it! I have a COTH hat too, so I'll probably trade off at shows.

Unfortunately, I will not be venturing up north for any shows, but I'll be at Blenheim in July! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My mother use to have a straw hat with the leopard scarf on it, (1960's), hmmmm, I wonder if it is good as new and stashed in the back of a closet? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So nice to hear that Poncho is finally sound. He has had such a rough winter and spring injury-wise! /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

How was the Monroe show? Who all did you see from our era? Were SK and the 'consultant' in attendance?? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Wish I could go to the Brawley show with you - when and where is it?

Some cool news - CWP is having a baby and is of course very excited!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif We are going to have fun catching up on what's going on, at Portola Valley!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bumpkin, am I retro then??? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I really need to take pics at the shows of everyone hanging out, etc. I always bring my camera, but it ends up buried in my trunk. We'll absolutely have to meet at Blenheim, Coreene! I think Suave mentioned that she would be at Blenheim for those shows too...are you still planning on that Suave? Speaking of Suave, she looks quite suave in her straw hat at Indio (pic is posted on the Horse-less Pics thread)!

Oh, but of course, my plans for the shows could change, based on the fact that the 2 juniors I ride with may not get to show this summer, leaving only a few of us now who actually can and want to show. /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I am SO annoyed that they are given wonderful horses and wonderful opportunities, and can't seem to find their way to school. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif And they only have to go part of the day because they get out around 1pm or so...they get school credit for riding!!!!!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Hey everyone: I wish I could go up north to show but I might be a spectator instead. How about a Calique table /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thank-you for the compliment AAJumper. I am still planning on the 2 weeks in July being at Blenheim. I'll be wearing my COTH Cap this time /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Will anyone be going to Showpark at the end of the month? I am debating whther or not I want to go. We have similar issues in that everyone says they are going...then only a few really end up going /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

AAJumper: how's the job situation?? I am still waiting to hear on my last client interview. I think things went well /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif But you never really know /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'll wear my COTH hat to Blenheim too! As for other shows, I'm going to LAEC next week, then the Gold Coast at LAEC in June, then Blenheim. No Showpark for me. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I wanted to go to Showpark at the end of April, but no one else wanted to go.

As for the job, things have turned around 180 degrees. The owner's son is back, all the annoying and incompetent people are gone, and we have a new Director of Engineering whose dad happens to be friends with my husband's dad. They are both retired LA County firemen, and both were battalion chiefs in the Malibu area during their careers. How is that for a small world??? As for the other potential job, they came back with an extra $1000/year, and I basically said (nicely) thanks but no thanks.

Well today was the first time I have seen A circuit flat classes since 1977!
OMG I completely picked them wrong.
The judge was sitting on the outside of the long side of the ring and everything I read about in the Victor Hugo Vidal article was TRUE!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I know, I am no judge, but how could he/she miss a horse that went around flinging a front leg out to the side so far I would think the rider would have to keep the horse atleast 6 feet from the rail so he wouldn't bash his hoof against it?
And no hind end movement, just lots of front end.

Horses who did bend around the corners and used the whole ring were completely overlooked in favour of the smaller circlers and bad front movement....ugh I was appalled.

hmmmm maybe Elliot who loves to cut corners and has a slight dish out on his right fore has a great career in the flat classes, hehe

I don' t think Brawley's are at PNW this weekend.

You need to sit down and type out a screenplay like Best In Show but a spoof on Horse Shows.

Coreene
May. 21, 2001, 09:40 AM
Well, actually I did. I took him up on Saturday afternoon to see the flags and tents and "stuff" flapping in the breeze, and it was everything I could do to keep him from bolting down the hill. He was higher than a kite, and we wound up running around one of the arenas at top speed until I was exhausted and almost slid off.

Then he said "If I go to the gymkhana, I might have to stand up on my back legs," at which point I decided that it was not worth splintered limbs.

But the best part was that SuaveReno and Little Suave Cosmo came over to visit and watch! Now we just have to hope that one day SR and LSC will want to move to HB.

Sounds like Elliot when he says, "ok but if you ask for that lead change I am going to have to stand on my head first!!" haha

Coreene
May. 21, 2001, 11:23 AM
Poor Willem would faint. He is going to be Willem On Acid pretty soon. Well, he's going to start taking Calm or Calm Up, or whatever it's called, that amino acid that seems to make them a bit more normal (yeah, like the Plumester could ever be normal). There's a real name for it, starts with a T, but I can't remember.

It was MOST alarming re wanting to stand on his hind legs, because he never does. He usually does Elliot's move and wants to stand on his head instead.

I am now sporting a big hole in the back of my leg, right where the knee fold starts, from gripping the dressage saddle (while in a two point) with my knees for dear life while in jeans. Rubbed a nice big hole, and next to it I sport a nice blood blister. But, as my dear friend Jenny Jo said, "Check him out, he is SMILING while he does this!" as we ran around the arena at top speed, so I guess it is worth it. Anything for Willem. I really need to do this in my hunter saddle though ... in breeches.

The best part of all was that a big group of kids who ride with "Horses in the Hood" up in Compton came down for the gymkhana (they came to one in February, too). Absolutely cleaned up. Completely fearless, wonderful young horsemen and women, and ride better than most at our barn.

Big contrast to watching one of the spoiled monsters lose her composure because, at the end of doing a small course in a lesson, she couldn't get a lead change. Upon which, of course, it was pointed out to her that she should have landed on the correct lead anyhow (definitely a child who needs to find a different hobby - she will otherwise always blame the horse for everything).

I had a set of those when I first started galloping on the downs in England.
I would have to sit in the tub everyday with breeches on to get them unstuck from my breeches, then dry the soggy breeches in front of the fire during my break in time for evening stable!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Furison ointment was the only thing to heal them, after suffering for three months.
I feel for you and know exactly what you are going through, I would definately bypass the nylons for awhile dear!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Bumpkin... yes the show was all weekend and no, no one was hurt (that was my first thought too). Unfortunately I didn't get to show as I'm about 3 months into a 9 month lay up! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I'm still trying to give them time to post as I wasn't there and the story would then be told third hand. To sum it up they did not have a good horse weekend and I've heard mutterings of the pinto making a nice broodmare for someone...

Uh oh is right. Let's hope it isn't completely a wash... Poor Pinto WB /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif She is quite cute from her pics. Well, Katey herd them towards the clique if you can.

So coreene, with those lovely leg markings, have you tried to shower yet? Ah yes, grasping anything to keep from screaming at the top of your lungs when the water hits.. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif A little aloe does relieve the burning...

Showers hurt. Took a piece of my aloe plant from the barn home with me and it does make a world of difference.

coreene: Did Willem's pal Dave aka Mini me do the gymkhana thing? How cool that the 'kids in the hood' came and conquered....I have a lot of admiration for Kathy Kusner for starting up that organization... plus for her riding... plus for all the interesting non-horse related things she has done with her life as well!!

Dave chickened out as well. I had a migrane on Saturday, so I didn't ride. He would have freaked anyway. Maybe next year.

We're shooting for the dressage schooling show in June. Yehaw!!!

Corrine-that other dressage trainer (Collene?) saw the cow-poke turned out yesterday, and she also said he should be a dressage pony. Whatever.

Coreene
May. 21, 2001, 03:28 PM
Yep. You know, when you buy a ready-made GP horse you have the potential for knowing everything (okay, that was not a flame for people who buy made GP horses - even Mr Plume was, but who knew because I bought him for $2500 from a gal who bought him from the killers).

TARYN, you could have your 6' trainer ride your 3' horse and she could start a new class - Hack and Harrow.

Thanks Coreene for your hospitality again. Little Suave really ejoyed the mini and the Palomino. Willum looked very cool as always. I can definitely see why he's take a pass on the gymkanna. There was quite a breeze there. What we really enjoyed seeing was the Horses in the Hood group. They were just terrific and i had a chance to talk to their trainer as well. Is it just me or is the suspense killing everyone else?

Just where are Merry & Beezer? Are they delivering Spot to some far off breeding grounds?

Anyone else venture a guess?

Merry
May. 22, 2001, 12:38 AM
Okay, the show. Yes, we came home early because Hammie was just terribly upset at being in a strange stall. It never occurred to me that he would be bothered by that, since he's so good at shows.

He schooled great on Friday. You must understand the frenzy of warm-up day: you have about a dozen people of various riding skills at a time jumping their own "course" with little or no regard to anyone else. So I had this rearing horse literally walking around on its hind legs behind me as Hammie and I cantered a line. Then another girl's path was intersecting with mine, but then, alas, her horse hung a leg and flipped over the oxer and she and the horse cartwheeled to the ground. Oh, and a huge warmblood beast didn't stop after a line and burst through the hedge and up onto the berm. Yet Hammie was fine!

But back in the stall he was just really upset. Beezer and I made two trips during the night to check on him. He just hated the stall. So I showed him in his 2 baby green classes in the morning (got prizes and I was the only amateur and HE GOT ALL HIS CHANGES) but I decided to take him home. I gave Beezer the option of staying or me coming back the next day, but Spot didn't seem to enjoy Hammie leaving without him, ahem, so we decided to just bag the show and come home.

So, guess where I'm going on Friday? Hammie and I are going to Showpark, schooling, and then hanging out in a stall for the day. Then I'll bring him home and probably go back to show on Sunday, and stick him back in the stall for a few more hours. I shall conquer his insecurities!

Yes, I'm probably going to sell Spot as a rideable broodmare prospect because I can see that Beezer would more enjoy riding Tigger. Let's face it, when you reach 40 careening around a jumper class starts to lose its appeal, especially on a rambunctious mare.

I don't want to put up with the hassle of trainers coming out and thinking they can "tune her up" to be the next pinto superhorse. I'd rather sell her inexpensively to someone who wants to breed colored sport horses.

Anyway, thanks for thinking of us. Actually, we've had quite a few laughs about the weekend from hell. Boy, when I finally win that amateur hunter championship on the Hambola, I'll be overjoyed! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Merry, when you win that Amateur Championship, and you will, the clique will throw the biggest party ever seen!!!!

We're just happy everyone is in one piece. Trainers tuning and can sometimes make things worse. And thats not a slight on them at all. Horses are like people they are what they are. We can improve slightly, but sometimes, that's it. Like you said careening around a jumper course, is not fun! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Bubba. Bubbie. Arthur. Dumb Bunny. AKA (as if his OTHER names weren't enough) the pet/lawn ornament wannabe. He's the big Pooh-bear brother of Spot the Wonder Beast (though her exact opposite). We wanted him to be a hunter. He wants to be a dressage horse. He's coming back from a bow, done when he took a bad step and tripped.

He's just a big, silly boy who really, really wants to be a pet. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That's who I thought you were talking about. I was confused because in the event of Merry and Beezer's untimely departure I would put dibs on others first (like Hammie, Barbie, April, Tigger...)

Although I can see it now... "And the 2002 winner of the Orange County Gymkana Circut in the 17h. and over division is..... Arthur!"

Merry
May. 22, 2001, 08:56 PM
Honest, I did try to pawn Arthur off on our farrier as a roping horse. I have indeed ridden him-- the horse, not the farrier... although... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif in a western saddle and he's huge but cute.

The response from the farrier? "Yeah, right, I can see it now, me yelling out to the cow, 'just wait up there, I'm comin' after you...any day now.' I don't think so."

Bubba's biggest draw back is that he's kind of faint hearted and a chicken. Lots of snorting but not really going anywhere or doing anything. When he plays under saddle, you feel like you're on a big marshmallow. He's not for a novice, but he is harmless.

Anyway, I appreciate everyone's kind sentiments regarding our illustrious horse show trip! I swear, Beezer and I are blessed with a sense of humor. Not only were we numerically cursed, but when we arrived at our stalls, Beezer opens the door to hers and what's inside?
A discombobulated show awning!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif
Remember our old story about the fiasco setting of up the awning? Where it took about three hours, six people and various sharp implements and the horse show was over and we STILL didn't have the awning up? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

We should've known that fate was against us! Oh well, let's see how Hammie does at Showpark this Friday. I've already paid for a stall. The ones there are actually permanent barns, not the flimsy things at Ride America.

Hey, I want dibs on Tigger....He's oh so cute, and with all that chrome, I love chestnuts with flash.

Bubba sounds like the perfect Hubby horse. If he goes no where, and just makes noise, would he be good on trails?

The awning incident, Merry you and Beezer are blessed with a wildly good sense of humor!! Guess we all have to be. We keep getting out there so our precious darlings can make fools out of us on a weekly if not daily basis. Would any of us have differently? NAH!!:D

Curbs will be a jingling Merry.....

Bumpkin: His hooves were oiled for the 'after' shot, but he was standing in grass next to Queen of Horse Show Mom's rose garden, so the photo shop folks had to embellish them.

Ooops. Don't want to incur the wrath of the BB Moderator gods (goddesses) by launching off into another topic on the same thread. I promise, I shall bring up the adventures of the Hambolina on a separate thread after this weekend. Please, oh please, make him be good in a stall! /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

You know, Katey ... the cute chestnut wonder horse should be the FIRST NAME on that wish list of yours ... because I am already seeing him standing saddled outside the arena, looking at the courses you do, and saying, "I can do this! Rider needed! Anyone, anyone at all want to ride this cute chestnut horse in this class??"

And thank you, Wty, for your kind dibs on the Tiggs. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif He is a very good boy. Even if, at the moment, he's having a little trouble picking up his right lead. He says he can't understand what Merry's problem is ... she asks him to canter, he does, but then she pulls him up and says no, asks again, he canters, she pulls him up.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif But he IS already doing itsy-bitsy cross rails with Merry on his back. And he lunged over everything in the ring the other day, even though he hadn't ever done that before and even though he hadn't been free-jumped since long before his hock injury. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Gee, can you tell I really like my kid? /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh, a funny story about that farrier whom Merry and I have both lusted after ... whose name is Rocky too. As in, yes, he shares the same name as the crazed Labrador. Mr. Beezer is out of town, calls me at El Ranchito (because where else would I be?); we're conversing when I insert, "Rocky, stop that! No! ... Sorry, Rocky is licking my feet." Mr. Beezer, who is not ignorant of the farrier's appeal to the sisters, gives a rather startled squawk and an "EXCUUUUUSE ME?!??!?!" Even now, I'm still trying to explain that with a straight face. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Actually, I am lusting after Tiggs. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I have a flaw, no not wty. I dearly love these flashy chestnuts. I drool, yes I will admit to this nasty habit, over them. dublin, Brookside is actually a barn name. And is close to Rancho Murieta. Its where the horse show will be held. Used to be the old PCHA Center. Where young people, mainly girls, all went to earn a degree in Horse Mastership. I can't for the life of me, remember the name of the embroidary company that comes to those shows. /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Yeah, I know, this should be the start of another thread, but it's rather anti-climatic. Just thought I'd let you fellow BB'ers know that I took the Hambone to Showpark to re-visit the stabling issue... and he was PERFECT! Aha, I may be onto something: don't take him with his Auntie Spot, the Wonder Mare!

He was so quiet (like his usual self) I thought he was sick... until he woke up and pitched a little in the schooling ring. But he got all his changes, jumped through several lines of wall oxers, and went into his stall like a trooper! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

His reward was that I'm not returning on Sunday to show. It's like he earned a merit badge. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oh, and I ran into Nancy Reed, a San Diego trainer who is also a BB'er here. We rendezvoused at the alleged cook shack, as in, "Have you even ground up the beef for my hamburger yet, or should I come back tomorrow?" Anyway, Nancy goes, "Should I jingle my curb chain, Merry?" /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Dublin, Lucy's great and now we know you must come to PB2...they have a "Horse Show Dog Show"!
Categories for Best Trick, High Jump, Oldest Dog, Cutest Dog, Ugliest Dog, Best Costume, Most Obedient, Youngest Dog, and a High Point award.

Let's see...best trick is definitely Rocky and the steak knife, (and if they don't like it Rocky can just chase the judges with his "trick")

Any other candidates? /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You know, that would be a fun class to have at horse shows: "Horse Show Dog Classes". Couldn't you just see rows of kennel crates stacked up behind the portable stabling?

Then, late at night, some devious Jack Russell would spring lose all the crate doors, and the dogs would be free, raising havoc on the showgrounds... holes dug in the turf course... the cook shack broken into... tires on the golf carts pee'd on... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Golf carts taken by marauding Horse Show Dogs. I can see the headlines now. Several crates were broken into late last night, with as many as 46 dogs loosened on the grounds. No one has been able to find the perpatraitor. The late night patrols had their hands full, racing after small bands of equine canines. The shifty little devils broke into both the cook shack and coffee kiosk. Owners awakened from their beds were quite shaken by all of this. /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Cypress is trusting me again not to pull pull pull and then throw her away at the last minute when I don't see a good distance. The next show will be the Gold Coast at LAEC where I will boil to death in the heat and smog, then (hopefully) to Blenheim in July. As for removing the chaps: It's just too much work. They stick to my sweaty jeans, which are stuck to my thighs...

Regarding relieving oneself in a stall: Let's not bring up Queen of Horse Show Moms who, last weekend at Showpark, told me to "just pee in the trailer. The port-o-potties are way back by the barns." Then, after I quietly did so after loading Hammie in the trailer, she literally yells to me, as I demurely step out of the trailer, in the midst of all these other exhibitors who are hauling in or riding by on their horses, "Did you go ALREADY?" /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Merry - we may have been seperated at birth! (Or just both raised in a barn.) I, too complain at how difficult it is to use the facilities while wearing my chaps. And those "facilities" have been known to be my horse's stalls. To remove and then try to squeeze my thight back into my chaps (that I have has since I was 16, I might add

Just back from Oregon and Washington, and of course, practically the first thing I did was get on the computer to check out what's been happening on the bb! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Looks like the CA clique has been behaving itself in my absence....

We had a wonderful day with bumpkin, and I will post pictures and more info once we get our photos developed. We also had a great time in Portland, my old stomping grounds; at Cannon Beach (for the second straight year, the weather was spectacular until the day we left!!); and up in Washington visiting Mr. Dublin's sister and family.

Mr. Dublin really did love spending time with bumpkin, her JRTs, Poncho and the wonderful Eliot, and didn't even mind being hauled through several tack shops, bless him.... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

And needless to say, I had an absolute blast getting to spend a whole day with bumpkin!!! She lives in such a beautiful, horsey area, which was so much fun to see. And she is a terrific tour guide as well.

More on our visit soon! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Does anyone know when the movie Texas Rangers is coming out? I had my $8 poised and ready to buy a ticket even before I found out SAM was in it. Cute men on horses- what could be better?

Don't ignore me when I tell you guys to give up on the stream-of-consciousness epics, and maybe I won't have to. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Now do I have to lock this thread too, or can y'all take a hint?

Start new topics when you have something new to say. If it's not worth a new topic, it probably doesn't belong on the board anyway.
