OMG.

I'm starting to get really scared.

What on earth have I done, buying a baby? Well, not strictly a baby anymore, he's two weeks short of a yearling.

But STILL.

Someone out there reassure me, it's going to be ok.

you will BE FINE!
HE WILL BE FINE!

Every time I have bought a weanling or yearling, or shipped a weanling / yearling for friends or clients, you think they are going to ballistic on the trailer and try and jump out through the window, and they are all fine. They either stand and munch hay after a few minutes, or look rather puzzled as to why you have stuck them in this moving box - rarely do any of them try and flip out.

Honestly - it is usually the older horses that should know better that are usually the pain in the butts!

You will have a blast with him! It will be the best decision you have ever made as you train him YOUR way, and once he is old enough to ride, you will know exactly what type of a personality you are dealing with.

Good luck! Post pictures!

Is this your stallion prospect Oldenburg colt? You are going to have so much fun with him! Be prepared though - if he is a typical yearling, he will probably look like a yak and you might be tempted to think that someone sent you the wrong horse! Just give him time - he will outgrow the gooney stage eventully and his quality will come through! Congratulations and I wish you much happiness with the little bugger!

Let's see, Rio was 14.3 on his 1st bday. He's turning 5 in March, and is 16.3 1/2 http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif His maternal grandsire is 17hh, his sire was 16.3 I'm sure that relieves your mind immensely http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif However, I have heard that *in general* a horse would grow a little taller if gelded than if left a stallion.

And I second the 'Yak' scenario. My little gal (granted she's almost three) looked like some wierd werewolf this winter - her baby face was so wide, and all the fluffy hair was spurting from her cheeks like really bad Elvis sideburns.

Just keep ONE thing in mind. He's going to be rattled after his trip. Give him a day to just hang out in his new home before you mess with him.

Of course, that is the advice that the breeder of my coming two year old told me -- I didn't heed it -- and she almost killed me within the first hour of my having her here in Colorado.

They do calm down pretty quick http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The babies are beautiful and I LOFF them both sooooo much.

All this is tempered, however, by the sad news of Dublin. "Must give us pause..." that in this joy of mine,... and it IS joy, that there are others that need comfort. I never knew Dublin, nor her posts, but it is sad to lose a member of our little community.

And it makes me appreciate all the wonderful support you folks have given me too...

Thank you, each and every one of you, whether you posted or not. This really is an adventure, and I will not be able to do it without all your help (raising this little bugger, that is) and ... well, of course, the help of my partner (well, that's a big DUH KT.)

Yay KT! Definitely get friendly with the camera and video recorder. And get a picture album so in 2 years you can look back through the months and go "wowww, was he ever really that little?"

You are going to have SO much fun watching him grow up! Yeah yeah he'll get on your last nerve, probably drain your wallet a few times, etc, but oh the joy. My "baby" is about to turn 5, and I got him at 5 months - WHERE did the time go???

Feb. 12, 2003, 12:04 PM
KT - you posted as to how it is correct to refer to his breeding
It should be :

Dormello/Rosier/Usus

It is not correct to say "Donnerhall/Rubinstein" - unless his father directly is Donnerhall, and his mother's father is Rubinstein himself.

Just a big of warmblood pedigree lingo!

Its:

Sire/Dam sire/granddame sire or as you put it Daddy/mommy's daddy/mommy's mommy's daddy http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think the point of doing it that way is too show the strengths of the mother's lineage since she only has so many foals in a lifetime. Many think the dam's line is more important!

I am in LOFF... and just in time for Valentine's day. Teehee. Forget the men, who need 'em anyway. I've got this adorable STUD. And he's younger than me ... whooohooo! And whatta guy he is.

I went to see him only once (before he came home), and now he is *almost* in my backyard, so I can see him any time I want. And he is a stunner. Those gaits will just blow you away... and boy does he have personality. I drove by his field and he chases the car!!!!! For a moment I thought he was going to bite the tires (no, not really) His trot is lofty (is that the right word?) is canter is ... I can't find the words!!! It's controlled energy (does that make sense?)

His walk is well, let's just say even when he's just moseying along he's overstriding.

I'm smitten, big time. I've fallen head over heels for him. And am so happy ... it should be illegal it feels so good.

sbp - thanks for the good wishes.
Medievalist - okokokokokok.
monstrpony - HI Monstr!!!! Ok. Let's see what I can do this weekend.
JB - video recorder? Hey, lemme get going with the disposable first.
2DeNiros- THANK YOU! I am an admitted newbie and I need all the correction I can. Thanks.
Spot - constant companion, new best friend, (LOL) your words have come with me the whole way!!! I saw your BABY. OMG... she's (??) be-oo-ti-ful. And soooo tiny! ANYTIME you want to visit there's a place for you... warm & cozy. I loff Canada anyway...
doubletake- HI! No reason to be jealous. ANYONE can do what I did, it just takes planning. I've been planning this for 2 years.

I guess I knew this day would come,... when did I start counting? At 80 or 90 days or so? And, you know what? If I had had the cash to just waltz over and plunk it down and buy him, this baby wouldn't have meant so much. Sometimes poverty is a very very good thing!
