lindsay...

I hope this doesn't come across as "grouchy", but you might consider cropping or at least resizing these pics if you want people to actually look at them. I have a high-speed line here at work, but I'd never look at anything of this size at home (too slow) much less several of them.

Also, while the shots are nice, several of them are a tad blurry (and the one that you have labeled as "a bit blurry" is VERY blurry).

Thanks for taking the time to post them though.

Thank you so much for sharing your photos. You have some great shots.

Your first photo posted is my favorite team. The Sun.am Jog is GV Top Of The Line/ Olivia Bunn from AUS. I chatted with her friendly groom Nat when she was unbraiding him inside the stable area. After Olivia's press conference on Friday, I met her and her Australian family. I gave her a Rolex decal and a pin for good luck. They were 3rd in Dressage, 11th Cross Country and finished 9th Overall. Yeaaahhhh /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also, while the shots are nice, several of them are a tad blurry (and the one that you have labeled as "a bit blurry" is VERY blurry).

I know I've said something like this before, but... maybe you'll listen this time.

You style yourself as a professional. A professional would take the time to resize the photos for online viewing. A professional would cull the blurry shots, unless they were of critical interest (think: proof of the shooter on the grassy knoll - if that's too old a reference for you, think: Karen O'Connor hanging upside down at the water) A professional would label the photos so as not to be in the position later of whining about how someone else posted them.

I congratulate your enthusiasm and the work you put into these, but if you expect to be taken seriously as an equestrian photographer...

Piaffeprincess98, I petted that barn cat too! Very friendly kitty. Aren't they all?

Your photo reminded me of an unpleasant experience. I was in the Hall of Fame barn on Friday around noon. I talked with the groom as she was bathing John Henry. I asked her if I could help her and she said I was not allowed. She did not wash JH's head, sheath area or under his tail. I reminded her that she wasn't finished. She was no longer friendly to me. I left for a short while and went back just before the 1pm show. I wanted a photo of Cigar out of his stall. I watched this same groom put the chain shank in Cigar's mouth in his stall. Unprovoked, she jerked the chain really hard about 3 times! Then he tried to bite her in self defense. She led him out of the stall and jerked him some more. I immediately confronted her and told her that she was being mean to him and that is why he was trying to bite her. Of course, she just ignored me. During his show, Cigar stuck his tongue out several times as she lightly tugged on the chain. The announcer mentioned that he does it for photographs and the crowd laughed. I began to wonder if that was why his groom jerked his mouth so hard before.....so he would perform for the audience? /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I would love to be wrong!

IMHO, Cigar did not need to be treated harshly by anyone. I reported the groom's behavior to the announcer and the other groom in attendance.

I'm curious, did you witness anything similar?

great pictures! i looked at the majority of them... they all look great. there are a few fuzzy ones here and there, but for the amount of pictures you took... well i'd say that can be expected. who can take a single 36 roll and not get ONE fuzzy picture? well i cant, but maybe im just challenged /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anyway... i had no problems with the size of the pictures, but that might be because there is a setting on my computer that adjusts the size of the picture to fit the screen. You can enlarge/decrease as you like, but it automatically adjusts it to fit.
Great job... maybe someday i'll get to go compete /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif not in the near future though. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

117, the nice grey, I am 99% sure is Bruce Davidson and High Scope.

The one that was a bit weird, 299, I believe is Gina Miles. Her horse just stepped over those fences in Staduim, what a cool horse.

Please post more, esspcially if you have anymore of Sharon and Ready About. master_tallly, Ready About is only 15.2 and she looks amazing jumping that footbridge!

Hmmm, imagine that. You tell someone who does not work for you that she isn't doing her job correctly, and she stops being nice to you. That's quite surprising. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Most thoroughbreds HATE being touched, nevermind washed, in those places... some of them, including mine, protest quite strongly. Can't say I don't blame her for not doing it on a daily basis.

16 years old is old enough to do things right, ESPECIALLY if that 16-year-old wants to be taken seriously.

Note the emphasis on the "PRO" - as in PROfessional, one would assume. PROfessionals have standards. If she didn't make such an issue about photos being HERS, and being copyright CorLin PROductions, it wouldn't be a big deal that she posts fuzzy or over-sized photos.

I didn't go to Rolex, but when I was at USPC Championships at the Horse Park in August I witnessed the same things. The grooms were very rough with the horses for no reason. On one occasion Cigar was just standing there and the groom suddenly jerked the lead line and yelled, "You are not going to do this to me!"

Great pictures, I had to forward one of the rainy shots to my husband and a friend who sold me her Rolex ticket just to prove how hard it rained.

Let me just add, nobody feels comfortable with criticism especially when we're young. Heck, I'm 40 and still squirm when someone points out my foibles, which believe me are many and frequent. Let's remember to first email people privately with critical suggestions, and be gentle. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Piaffeprincess - your shots are really GOOD. They really are. You are on the right track with your photography, you have a very good eye. I was thinking that yesterday while viewing your work (I was viewing as you were posting them!) and I remember saying to myself that "sheesh this girl is so young and she has some talent there!" I would know, my ex-boyfriend was a professional wildlife photographer and has had his work published in some well known wildlife/nature magazines and even in the Bronx Zoo brochures.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photos. They are great action shots! Your talent will improve the more you practice.

RAR - you are one rude person. My jaw dropped when I read your post. You should be very, very ashamed of yourself. Your words reek of jealousy. Cut it out as you are only embarrassing yourself.

tle
May. 3, 2002, 12:43 PM
Well, since everyone seems to intent on condemning R-A-R for her words, let me add a vote of support. Sorry goobs, it's NOT jealousy! I would like to take great pics but not to a point of being jealous. I was the one that started R-A-Rs post if you read the first one. I just mentioned that many of them were a bit blurry (and why post ones that are VERY blurry??). I too thought that the way Lindsay presented herself she was trying to give the impression of someone with talent and professionalism. Neither R-A-R nor myself are saying she lacks in talent or enthusiasm either... just that the pics she posted (waay to big in size for the most part and by posting the blurry ones) didn't give that impression at all. We're not saying that many times pros get shots wrong or they get blurry... or heads get chopped off... but those are rarely the ones you see them "advertise".

Sheesh!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Back off R-A-R, guys... it's only an opinion (which I happen to share).

She wasn't posting them for advertisement she was posting them for our viewing pleasure. I had no problems viewing them on my computer and she told us which ones were blurry (like who cares? big deal if they are blurry?) She wasn't asking for a critique. To put so much effort into criticizing a 16 year old's effort (who is just starting out in this field of photography) tells me a lot about you and RAR. It's petty. Go and view someone else's pics if these are so offensive to you.

I don't mind when someone gives me constructive criticism...especially when I'm just getting started in an endeavour. I wouldn't have posted the blurry ones, but I'm very picky about pictures.

The conditions were atrocious for action pictures--low light, fast movement, etc. Heck, I left my camera in the car after lunch! However, if you're going to post as hoping to be a professional you ought to be open to hearing critques as well as accolades. How else does someone learn what is expected of them at various levels of accomplishment?

It's nice of Piaffeprincess to share her pictures; I suspect if she decides to start selling pictures, and/or as she gets more experience she'll edit out the ones that don't make the grade. She has a good eye for the moment and has taken some really good pictures, especially for a 16 year old.

people stop. i think i can see both sides.

TLE and RAR- ya'll have great points, and ones that should be listened to should she ask for advice on how to advertise and be professional.

but...

i dont think she was trying to advertise. i think she was simply posting these for our viewing pleasure, which she does not have to do. (by the way, thanks. your time and efforts have given me hours of FREE photo viewing in my boring cubicle at work)

quote:
You style yourself as a professional. A professional would take the time to resize the photos for online viewing.

i just think that was a bit of a harsh statement to be directed at a 16 year old posting these for free for our viewing pleasure. now, if she were putting them on a professional website to try and sell them, then i think that would be very good advice.

so, basically, i see your points, but lay off for now until she asks advice on how she could advertise as a professional. this board is just for fun.

RAR- i know the "crash" post you were referring to and i'm totally with you there. if you post pics w/o proofing them, you're taking a risk that someone else might claim them as their own (which i dont think that person was "claiming" them, but you know what i mean).

FlowerPower
May. 3, 2002, 01:36 PM
Constructive criticism doesn't have to be so harsh, but maybe it just seemed harsh because it is difficult to get feelings across in writing sometimes. Anyway, I think you really have potential, PPrincess, you certainly seem to take the picture at the right time, a concept which MOST people can't get ahold of!

Wondering if you'd let me use some of them for photo credit?? I, like you, boo-hoo'ed the neigh-sayers and followed my dream and I now am webmaster for several top riders. Today at school Lindsay made me aware of what was being said on this thread- and here comes my 2 cents. BIG DEAL if they are blurry... If you dont like them DONT LOOK AT THEM! It's not hurting me OR Lindsay OR anybody else. I highly doubt either of you were standing in the pouring rain with a soaked ass and soppy tennis shoes attempting to stop shivering- JUST to take a picture.... please. Don't give me this "PROductions" lecture or YOU CANT BE TAKEN AS A PROFESSIONAL... /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Here's a newsflash to you "adults".. Maybe back in your time when you rode horses you didn't have a lot of responsibilities on your hands, I'm guessing. Lindsay and I both have horses who we are bringing up to higher levels (Me- jumpers and her- eventing.) That, on top of school, (YES we DO take HONORS classes /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ) and now Lindsay has a barn to start running and I will soon have one too.... There's not possibly enough time in a day to sit here and crop, resize & thoroughly sift through all of our photos to please you. You may take it upon you self to crop, re-adjust, or WHATEVER pleases you, you can do to these photos- we really DON'T care- I PROMISE you. We are 15... And we obviously have different plans for our lives than you seem to think we do.. Photography has merely been a side-fun project WHEN WE HAVE TIME. Our lives are NOT revolving around the fact that we may have got a good shot of Bruce over the fence... ya know? WE ARE STILL KIDS! This is EXACTLY why I DON'T enjoy posting on this board anymore- b/c some of you "adults" act like little kids. I mean THEY ARE JUST PICTURES! I really don't give a rats butt if you dont like them. For all you "adults" that don't approve of our PROFESSIONAL /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif pictures heres my thorough apology:
Im sorry- but for future reference please take it upon yourself to maybe decide to grow up?!?!

Whoa there. Everyone step away from their keyboards with their hands in plain sight.

Lindsay and Corie: your pictures are lovely. The timing shows talent, and it was very nice of you to share them with all of us who couldn't go to Rolex ourselves. I suspect that everyone who viewed them appreciate the time and effort you put in. I think that perhaps RAR and TLE were trying to offer some constructive criticism in order to help you improve your product, given your goals as stated to become professionals, and perhaps the details of tone didn't come across in text. Perhaps you could take it in the spirit that it is offered, instead of writing e-mails back which accuse them of being as "crotchity as this old lady who lives next to me."

Nothing that was said merited the level of response that RAR and TLE got back. I've read alot of posts from both of them, and I doubt very much that either is a rude, insensitive, "very mean" person. The name-calling is a bit ridiculous.

Master_Tally, John Henry is a 27 year old gelding! If his groom can't wash his head, sheath and under his tail during a shampoo bath that's incompetent caretaking. /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Not going to comment on the pictures...they were too large and loaded very sloooowly on my computer - so I didn't really look at them! I appreciate the effort to post them, but I think RAR and TLE had valid points.

Anyway, Melzy's post really bothered me! Geez...you criticize someone's washing technique and horse handling techniques without even being aware of how these horse's are to handle and them complain about them to fellow employees! I work with a 11.2 hand pony gelding that will literally kick your head off if you touch him near his sheath and rear up and run backwards when you wash his head! Yup, my fiance and I can wash him completely together, but left on my own I literally cannot hang onto him and get these areas washed. So, I would hardly criticize this handler's washing methods without knowing the entire story.

Same with the chain....maybe you've handled breeding stallions before, but my one experience (with the rather laid-back standardbred breed) was to be very, very careful when dealing with these guys. They will tend to - fill in the blank, bite, strike, etc - before you even have a chance to react. I would have no problem with getting after a horse (yes, roughly) to establish their attention before something happened.

I can't judge this situation because I was not there...but this rings very true of the typical bystander-who-knows-better than everyone else.

Stepping off my soapbox...I've done a lot of professional grooming and if someone made those comments to me, I won't print my response here ;-)

KAM, calm down please. You are correct in that you were not there to judge the situation. I chatted with the groom for about 45 minutes while she bathed the 27 year old gelding, John Henry. He stood ground tied like a statue. Remember I offered to help her. I was being polite, not scolding her.

I have also been a professional groom for many moons with Grand Prix Jumpers and TB yearlings and 2 yr. olds.

I guess in my almost 40 years of horse management I've been blessed with animals that have been handled correctly and have manners. I feel very fortunate. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Lindsay --

By now I hope you have seen the latest issue of VIRGINIA HORSE JOURNAL which has your wonderful photo of Mary Grantham and Ides of March at the recent CIC** at Morven Park (with photo credit of course)!

I look forward to watching your promising photo talent continue to grow. Photographing horses is supposed to be challenging, rewarding and fun, right?

You go girl!

We watched the evil-tempered old fart amuse himself by running laps around the girl who wanted to bring him in Saturday morning. He was hysterical--he'd stare at her, then stick his tail up and run to the other side of the fence as she stood there watching him fly about. He then ran up to the fence, stood there & reared and bucked by turn, making it VERY clear he wasn't ready to go in yet! Not too bad for an old guy recouperating from surgery... BTW, John Henry is known for his bad temper...

Why yes, Melzy, you are right, of course. Assistance is exactly what I need... but only if it comes from a bystander who doesn't know a single thing about myself or the horse I'm handling. Silly me for thinking otherwise. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyways, thank so much.

First of all, yes I know he is a gelding...

Second of all, as LAZ mentioned, John Henry is known for his bad temper

Finally, I think it is interesting that the poster was initially put off that the groom wouldn't let her help wash John Henry. When I professionally groom, we don't allow anyone but the other grooms, owners, and riders handle the horses. Why? Because it is a extremely high liability. God forbid that something happen, you don't want people not associated with the farm (or business) hurt.

Sorry if I came off "ranting"....while I am not familiar with this particular situation, the story just bothered me at some level. I just think that I wouldn't question a groom's behavior UNLESS I had personally handled the horse myself. Maybe a couple teeth marks later, I may feel differently...:-)

I apologize Melzy if my comments offeneded you or anyone else....normally I am not this outspoken, but I've seen many situations where people who don't know the whole situation jump to conclusions. I think it is a very common and unfortunate vice of the horse world.

is there something wrong with Bally Mar? he looks awfully thin in every shot, and is shaved over his hip... very thin though =(

Saw Bally Mar up close...

She was fine.. didn't look overly thin to me (and I am neurotic about that after working in horse rescue since '93) and it is a 'birthmark' of white hair over her hip...

Just remembered something else....Do you remember the grey whose rider used orange and white colors? Now that captured a moment like I have never seen before! That horse was giving its ALL and you got it! Thank you for letting me share this. Do you know what horse it is?

hmmm...well, Corie has long brown hair, mine's more blondish. And the grey horse MIGHT be Sharon White and Ready About...not sure though. I alsmost got a pic of Holly Hepp but Lestor Piggot ranout at the Magic Mushrooms where we were then she reited. Check out Off Course, I think Corie has one of her. Search for Morven Park under my name and I have one of her in March.

just wanted to say you took some nice photos. Is your camera digital? I know with some digital cameras it is very difficult to capture action shots, particularly in the rain! You did a great job.
You should select your top 10 photos (some dressage and some jumping), lightly clean them up in photoshop and display them on a webpage.

Constructive crits are always good...even the not-so-constructive crits are good. People can be harsh...its a reality all artists must face. I have been painting/illustrating for a few years and some people like my stuff, some people don't...filter through all the critiscism you receive and do what you think you need to do to make your art better. Just think how good you'll be in a couple of years! Keep taking photos...you'll only improve. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks to the Moderators for not deleting my older threads. I have been searching frantically for my Rolex pics disk since I wanted to post some pics of High Scope the other day. I have still not been able to locate my disk of over 400 pics. I am very uspset, but am glad to know that my *best* pics are here on the COTH BB.

Please jingle those curb chains for me in hopes that I'll find that disk!

Thanks picture takers one and all! I have never been to such a stellar event, so this was a thrill....I take my first lesson with an event trainer tomorrow! Woooeee.
But, I need help, coming from hunter/jumper land:

At this level (Rolex) are all the horses TB's? ....Can't say I saw anything else in these pictures but I've been fooled before.
What's with the sparkly brow bands?
Do all the riders wear stocks in the jumper phase?
And red lined coats if not red coated?
And where do I find out the descriptions of courses and dressage tests and fence heights for all the various levels? Is there such a web site?

Thanks - me and mine gotta work now

quote:
Originally posted by 2Dogs:

Mostly TB's, American and otherwise, with a good number of part-bred (7/8ths, etc) with Irish Draught blood, an occasional warmblood cross.

quote:
What's with the sparkly brow bands?

They're usually brass clinchers or some such, and are kind of a nice touch, IMO...beats the HECK out of sparkly bell boots! /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

quote:
Do all the riders wear stocks in the jumper phase?

Formal "hunt" attire is required in stadium. Anyone who's represented the US is allowed to wear a red coat. Red linings may be a certain brand (not sure) but DO seem to be the most popular color.

quote:
And where do I find out the descriptions of courses and dressage tests and fence heights for all the various levels? Is there such a web site?

Try http://www.rk3de.org There is a course description and photos of the individual fences. The dressage tests are located at http://www.eventingusa.com, the home page of the USEA. There is a post on this BB titled "Eventing Jumps" that lists all the heights, etc., for the various levels.

Welcome! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
