I have the Ovation padded halter in the brown, but I know that it comes in black with silver hardware (kinda wish I knew that before I bought the brown!). I LOVE it. It fits well and has really held up in the 2 years I've had it.

I love the Perri's Leather padded halters. I've used them for years.

i have a custom one from danzigbros.com. its BEAUTIFUL but let me warn you they are SLOW about the custom stuff :/

edited to add: the reason i got it from them is that their hardware is stainless steel, not chromed nickel or anything else (i'm allergic to nickel and a lot of metals)

These! I have two of the color padded ones (although they come in just a black/black option) and use them as my every day halters; which means they've currently been hanging on a fence post in the wet mist all day. They're still both gorgeous (about 6mo old) and none of the color padding has faded a bit.

They were buttery soft right out of the box, and have gotten even softer. They're just gorgeous.

The only thing I'd change is that I'd love an English chin...but that's just personal preference!

I bought 2 from Dover 12 yrs ago but they were so stiff, despite oiling, that I gave them away.

I found a great new black stubben on ebay and bought it. It's padded, but is soft.

I think The Dressage Connection's halters are pretty nice, at a good price, and they often offer specials on them -

KL Select / Red Barn (http://www.shopatron.com/products/category/593.0.1.1.35585.0.0.0.0) makes lovely halters. I wouldn't use them for turnout (the leather is too soft, too $$, etc.) but it doesn't sound like you would be using it for turnout.

For halters that are a bit more affordable (and great for turnout) but still very much show quality, I like Fennell's. Here's their black show halter (chrome fittings) w/ adj. chin & snap for $55..

I recently bought a brown leather halter from Quillin, my first one from them. Let me tell you - I will NEVER order from anyone else!!! It is incredibly soft and supple. I have never had a halter this supple before. I love it! I am trying to convince my husband all our horses need new Quillin halters.

I also ordered from Danzigbros.com. I called them and they took my order over the phone and I had the halter in less than two weeks. It's beautiful and looks like a $300 halter. I think I paid around $60 but I can't remember exactly. Definitely less than 100.

While we're on the subject, am I wrong to think there is a market for a black leather lead-rope with stainless without a shank chain?

Quillin.

And regarding leather leads, I like the feel/width/weight of nylon rope leads that I don't think I could ever switch to a 'dog leash' style. However, there is difficulty finding black leads with non-brass hardware to go with my black/silver Quillin halter. I ended up with Weaver's nickel and Blocker's black hardware. Neither are a perfect match, but at least I have 2 non-brass ones. Just saying... there's a market for that too.

I have two of the 1083 model. One in black/black One in Brown/white. Very nice halters. Shame they don't fit my current horse's head.

Yes, I want this. I wish the chains would be removable.

 always Quillins. I just got one for Xmas for Dink - black with stainless and it is stunning. I expect him to wear it until he dies.

Quillins would make one if you asked.
