Since two people have asked me about this in as many days, I thought I'd run it by the masses.

Would anyone here be interested in a foxhunting forum? I've thought about it before, but I've never been sure it would get much use. If people are interested, though, I have no problem with creating one.

Let me know if you have an opinion either way. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I like the idea and COTH would be a logical place for a Foxhunting forum to be found!

Great idea! I know I'd like to learn more about it. And, to those of you who know me and are now laughing hysterically at the thought of me out foxhunting - I'd like to learn more, even if I am too chicken to ever actually do it. http://www.chronofhorse.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Aww, come on Louise!! Stormy and Promise would just LOVE to foxhunt!!!! hehe /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I also think it would be a great idea, Erin. The more, the merrier!! I have only hilltopped, but enjoyed that very much, even if it was in my youth, eons ago. . .Like Louise, I doubt seriously that I would be brave enough to actually foxhunt these days!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE!!!!! Say you'll do it! I want to learn as much as I can about this sport of old, and I have been invited to hunt recently, so I need all the help I can get!
I suppose that as anything, if it doesn't go over well, you can change it back.
Please give it a shot! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't know, Erin....may not be too healthy for me! There aren't any foxes in Utah. No hunts. I MISS THEM SOOOO MUCH!!!!!

Living in Middleburg, I was fortunate enough to be invited to numerous hunts with a private pack in Bath County....what a FABULOUS TIME I had!!! Oh, the memories....I think I will cry now!!! Boo hoo!

Yee-haa! Count me in! Thanks Erin and the other people who suggested a foxhunting forum.

My horse and I went cubbing this past weekend. Both he and I were so psyched! I am sure that if I had given him the go-ahead, he would have sniffed out a fox on his own - I have seen experienced field hunters who can track just as well as the hounds. When we returned to the barn, my horse kept coming over and happily nuzzling me. He definitely was placing his vote for what he wants to do this coming weekend. Hey, I am happy to oblige!

LOUISE, you can foxhunt the same way you do that next dressage test with Promise and Stormy. Just start running, jumping rope and doing squats right now to get those legs in shape.

Erin, I would love to see a foxhunting forum. One of my goals from the beginning has been to learn to ride well enough to hunt. I'm certain that a forum would be a great place to learn.

I think its a great idea! We can all laugh about how much I dont know about Foxhunting! LOL... and, I could enlighten everyone with my very amusing stories from back in my Pony Club foxhunting days /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Lotsa fun!

I think that I'll just look out my back window and watch the family of foxes that has taken to using my back yard as a playground (Mom, Dad and 3 now almost grown cubs - cute and you should see what those guys can do to a tennis ball!) Razumny. That'll save lots of wear and tear on me, not to mention Ms. P and Mr. S whom Duffy is so generously volunteering.

Oh, yes! It'll give me a chance to talk about my retired foxhound, whose favorite place is my recliner. I'm turning into a retirement home for foxhounds, (2 in 2 years, anyway) and I have to say that they make wonderful housepets once they are retrained.

How can I post a picture of Eli in his recliner? He's an purebred American Foxhound, and enormous!

Count another yes vote here! Even if I'm aching from my first day of the season cubbing. I had a suspicion it wouldn't be an easy day, easing us back into the swing, and I was right...It's a happy ache, though.

well, Kryswyn, you must mean you can't afford the time to read all the FOL email that will clog your mailbox, as FOL online is free! They are laughing over your post which was copied and sent out...(Not by me!)

Their subscribers are from all over the world, and up-to-date on all hunting issues.

I would just love them to move their discussions here - which is a much easier format!

Oh, and from what I've seen, they get as sidetracked into silly issues as we do, as well as the political ones. A lot of passionate people there - can we handle it?? /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Now Colin, you know you don't need foxes to foxhunt - coyotes do just fine. And the added benefit of hunting coyotes is that they are virtually impossible to catch -- the only way the terminally soft-hearted types like me, who would never be able to stand it if hounds actually caught sometihng, can enjoy hunting. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Before I would go out with the local hunt, the hunt master who invited me had to swear up and down that they've never come close to catching anything.) /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey Portia - I'm with you! I've hunted dozens of times, and never "personally seen" the catch. The few times we did get a fox I stayed way way back and totally ignored the situation. I just love riding through the countryside, watching the hounds work, and not worrying about my equitation!!! LOL!

I'm with you Portia and Colin. I can't wait to go foxhunting, but I'll be looking for drag hunts or clubs with slow packs.

How come the terminally soft-hearted people never seem to think about the baby lambs and chickens, not to mention bunnies and mice who are caught and devoured by the fox, who probably doesn't look quite so endearing at the moment of the kill?

Well, am I embarrassed or what? Imagine me misunderstanding what I was originally told about FOL; I thought it was exclusive, but if they're willing to copy my post from here, then they can't be, right? I guess I was allowed to believe that because Someone doesn't want me to spend even MORE time on the computer! LOL

My dogs kill invaders all the time.

A kill is a kill, whether it's a fox, an armadillo, a rat or a rabbit. If you have hunting dogs, you have to expect them to kill things.

Granted a rat isn't as cute as a fox. but the principle is the same.

Gotta say, though, that in my hunting, and the hunt that I get hounds from now, kills have been non-existent. But I'm not offended by the thought of one.

When I boarded with an MFH, the freezer always had brushes and masks that came from South Carolina hunt weeks.

Erin
Sep. 18, 2000, 10:35 AM
Well, I'll take all that as a "yes"!

I'll run it by the Chronicle folks to make sure it's okay. Most likely it wouldn't be implemented until after the Olympic stuff has died down. I'll probably delete the Olympic forum sometime in October, and then add one for foxhunting.

Thanks for the input!

SLWarrior: Another Kansas foxhunter! Are you a member of MV or FL?

SLW
Sep. 19, 2000, 03:25 PM
Neither, at this time. I keep saying I will join FL, hunted as a guest there 2 seasons ago, nice folks and terrific places to hunt. My mare died last November and I found a new horse this January. This summer was spent taking a daughter to her western shows so I did not get to do the *8 Easy Lessons* at FL with the new horse /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif, I'm just not 100% sure how the guy will do in back with the hilltoppers, where I enjoy being.

However, an annual "All Girls Ride" is this weekend- no husbands, no children no nothing but horses, gals, food and adult drinks! I am taking the guy out for a spin. It will be a mixed group of experienced horse gals and a nice place to rough out the horse to faster crowds. If he does well, we'll join and get in some cubbing time before the season starts!! I live closer to MV, same county, but a good buddy is a FL member so I would join up there.

SLWarrior:

I'm a whipper-in at FL and also a member of MV (I was a member of MV when I met hubby at a joint meet, he was a FL member, now we hunt with both).

FL has just started cubbing and is finishing up the 8 Easys. Be nice to see if your new horse will hunt, and there is always a hilltop group that takes things slower. Come on out!

Badger-

Nice to meet you on this forum! This weekends weather will feel like hunting weather! Hopefully my guy will take to the crowds this weekend. He is better than I give him credit for, I just have an extremely high, but reachable, standard for manners with my horses.

You probably know my friend from LV hunt. She just took her gelding, a Selle Francis(sp) TB cross to one of the Masters, ahh I think he is Master, to use for a hunting horse. The horse is Boggs.

excellent idea. Many foxhunters are long time chronicle subscribers, as am I. It could be a good place to dispell some of the blood sport hysteria as well as to educate equestrian as to the fun and befefits of the sport. Foxhunting is an excellent venue to train both horse and rider to be both brave and savvy. Remember where the show hunter classes originated from: "working hunter". If more competers/trainers/judges were truely familiar with the demands and requirements of a true "working hunter", I believe the hunter-jumper sport and its participants would greatly benefit. I vote a strong yes. But "bleeding hearts" please keep your comments to another thread.

Yes indeed, she is a very gracious lady and is now hunting both with MV and FL, as she lives closer to MV. I hear she has a nice new horse to bring along. Boggs' new situation will suit him well. He did indeed go to a MFH who is an excellent horseman, an excellent home.

Good to meet you too! Now, if they had the foxhunting forum set up, we'd get to meet more foxhunters this way.

>Would anyone here be interested in a >foxhunting forum?

Make it more of a general hunting forum, then you could include us harriers and draghunters!!

vineyridge
Sep. 20, 2000, 01:18 PM
Si, I think the term "foxhunting" is a sort of term of art in the USA for any hunting with horses and packs of dogs. Since many of our foxes are coyotes and hunting here usually means gunhunting, foxhunting would include drags and mounted hunting after harriers.

Walking behind beagles might be a different thing, although I know the COTH has beagling packs in its Hunts directory.

Actually, calling it a HUNTING forum might be a good idea, then it could encompass the beagles, harriers, bassets, staghounds, etc.

(or, better yet, call it hunting with hounds...)

By the way, believe me, beagles can FLY - hunting hare behind a good pack of beagles (or English bassets, for that matter) requires a runner's fitness and physique! No joke!
