It's almost November, anyone up for picking a date for our next trip?
I can't make the first weekend (3rd & 4th) due to my computer brilliant sister arriving from South Carolina with my newest nephew but the following weekend or the next are open.
Inverness, Clive's Mom, larosa90, Elghund and Cactus Lil, are your horses sound? Janet - any conflicting events? Kennett Square, you promised to make an appearance (it's thee only way to be sure of getting barbecue at the rate it disappeared last time!)
We had such a great time in October. Anyone know the FP schedule so as to not run against a crowd?

There are shows at KS's barn on Nov 4th and 10th, so she probably can't make it then.
I will probably be showing Nov 4, and doing a cc school at Leslie Clark's on Nov 11, but the rest of the month is still open for me (except thanksgiving, I'll be up in NY.)

It will be interesting to see how he behaves now that FP is familiar and he has a clue as to what is going on. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As long as it coordinates with my friend's schedule so that she can drive the trailer down (yes, I am the almighty without a driver's license /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ), Dunn and I will be in attendance along with the wonderful Bay-pony and my best friend Zoe. (Although we're talking about switching horses for the day since I am the biggest weenie in the world when it comes to being out of the ring, and my horse rather loves it). But we will be there hopefully, and I'm sure my parents will come if they can and take pictures for us!

You see he was supposed to go to a show last weekend. But he refused to get on the big KS van (it might say Cavallo Farm, but it really belongs to Kennett Square). 45 minutes of carrots and sticks and he was no closer to being in the van, so he got to stay home.
If we can get transport we will be there.

The best for me would be the 11th. I have shows on the 10th and leave for the big VHSA Assoc Finale on the 15-18th. Thanksgiving weekend is great and the following weekend( Nov 30 - Dec 2)I will be at the annual VHSA Convention in VA Beach. Yes this is very ME ME ME!! Sorry, just my weird calender. Besides, I think the dogs are allowed in the park on leash but NOT on the backside, trickier and more confining areas of the course. Such a sensible ruling, why it doesn't apply to the S. O.'s I do not know. /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

N2Jumpers will be in our clutches for the entire Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year time frame. This means she can be introduced to the year end clearance sales at Horse Country and The Tack Box! Oh the shopping discount delights!
Picture the gnashing teeth of the West Coast constituents over the truckloads of 50% off latest garb sent home directly from the shop (bearing the stamp "Middleburg" or "Warrenton" emblazoned across the parcels) so as to not over burden dear N2Jumpers return luggage!
Tee Hee, now all we must do is keep a wary eye out on Thanksgiving for signs of another pathetic Canadian attempt of trickery!

I searched for the recipe for that bean salad. They had a marvelous one in the hospitality tent served with a huge wheel of blue cheese and assorted crackers and I became a pest to all who know me in my attempts to track the recipe down.
Eventually, I combined three other recipes to get it just right and it was delicious!
Fresh green beans just cooked to be still crispy, wax beans, black beans, pintos and garbanzos all in a dressing of cider and garlic rice vinegars, peanut oil, sugar, dill and slivered bell peppers and scallions. Beans placed hot into the dressing and refrigerated overnight, yummy!

I just found out today that my barn's showing that weekend, plus I've been having second thoughts about taking Dunn anywhere that doesn't have a fence to stop him with (he only gets worked on weekends, since I'm the only one in the barn that will ride him besides my trainer). If I can talk someone into schooling him that week for me though, I may bypass the show (I have a feeling Clive's Mom would never speak to me again if I didn't bring Zoe down!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ). Otherwise we may come sans horse for me if we make it down.

It's looking like a "no" for me and Zoe. We're showing that weekend, and at this point I think it'd be better for Dunn's mind if we did a hunter schooling show at a barn he's been to before rather than take him down and ride outside (and potentially have a disaster). Is this something that will be repeated again in the spring when Dunn is in a little better shape??
C- if you want to email me at dunnagain_03@hotmail.com, I'll gladly put you back in touch with Zoe since we won't be making it down.

Trixie,
It was great to met you and Bgoosewood. I hope I didn't corrupt you too much. But if you ride with Miranda I know anything I did was tame.....I will be bringing an appetizer of artichoke dip. I hope you like that. It is made entirely of non-meat products. I would hate to see the next Katherine Graham waste away for lack of proteins!! I'm trying to think of something else I can bring other than the gang from Cavallo. I'm hoping to get Paige to come and maybe see if I can get MizzWade to come also on the Sloop Woody Wade. She might be in Raleigh though....But I bet if Moesha and MargaretF encouraged her she would come!!!

Since Mr. Wings is an king of the pawn shops, we happen to have two brand new Volvo tires and rims (over and above the spare tires that normal people have in their vehicles).
Our '88 240 wagon has made the trip to Cape Cod many times. It has 234,000 miles on it and is going strong (especially now I have the truck for hauling my weekly feed purchase!)
Mr. Wings has an '87 740 sedan. Between them we should keep your Volvo running.

A reminder, in every escapade throughout my life, I have been the one remembered by the officials.
Clearly I recall the park ranger telling my father "There were 15-20 girls on horses in the scout camp - one of them was that kid of yours!" Mr. Ranger (Woodsey Owl to those familiar with Mason's Neck) on several occasions was already at my home upon return. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I always was on the albino, appaloosa or pinto while the others managed to scamper away scott free on their chestnuts and plain bays. Now I am the one with the infamous RV.
Our jocularity was well behaved on the first occasion. Discrete, covered containers, please! I am thinking I should have hauled my bag of trash out of the park instead of placing it so considerately in the trash can. It rattled ominously of suspect beverages! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hopefully, Woodsy Owl did not notice, nor connect the infamous RV with the contraband but we must be alert and discrete.

Dear MizzWade,
I appreciate your prompt and thoughtful notification informing me of the poor planning on the part of Ms Square.
Fortunately, this outing has been carefully arranged to accomodate the mounted as well as horseless BBers. Unscathed bottles of Absolute are stockpiled, Mr. Wings' barbecue smoker is double loaded in anticipation of the increased numbers of participants. Entertainment has been speculated upon and numerous sheets of COTH nametags prepared.
Ms. Square's attendance has been formally acknowledged and failure on her part to participate at this late date will require a lengthy and convincing note from a recognized veterinarian, er, I mean doctor. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Given certian circumstances regarding the recent relationship of Ms. Square and Mr. Wings, the thought of his superior barbecue not being duly appreciated by Ms. Square could render her abilty to converse in cyberspace somewhat unpredictable /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So as not to scare anyone...KS has gotten an ulcer in his eye. I don't think it will be cleared up enough for him to go to The Pan. BUT I will be at The Pan with about 6-8 people from my barn. Some of the Precious Puumpkins are coming as well as some of the highly abused adults that I teach too. I will probably bring another horse so I can ride around helping my kids jump around and the lazy butt that I am refuses to walk.
I did try MizzWade and was told too bad Woody was going to Raleigh. I am stricken.....she knows how much Ilove Woody and he's one of the few I would trust toting the lovely rotund derriere of moi's around The Pan. But no she INSISTS that he must go to ONE MORE show. I say let Woody make the choice!!!
Anyway I will be there sans Woody Wade. I will try to do better in the future with my booking arrangements. Can't wait!!! I hear BBQ is already being prepared......WOO WOO!!!

Frying Pan is easily reached via Rt 66 to the Fairfax County Parkway heading towards Herndon/Reston (NOT towards Springfield!) Proceed several miles and there will be a nice sign FRYING PAN PARK for the left turn at the traffic light at West Ox Road.
For those coming from I95 south (Woodbridge/Fredericksburg) or the Clifton/Fairfax area, take the Rt 123 to the Fairfax County Parkway and go PAST the first exit for West Ox road, continue past Lee Highway and Rt 66 then look for the same left hand turn at the Frying Pan sign at West Ox Road. The park is only a minute or two further on the right hand side.
You will see part of the Cross Country course and the Park's Barn and farmyard just before the entrance on the right. Follow the signs to the cross country which will take you past the main ring on your left and the indoor on the right, go through the tiny patch of woods and you will find us.

This reporter has obtained a copy of the Cavallo Farm sign-up list for the FPP event this Sunday.
As many of my regular readers know, the Cavallo Farm Contingent ("CFC") represents a significant threat to pedestrian health. Steering while mounted is optional and both persons and picnic tables are subject to being jumped.
Trainers, in particular, are cautioned to watch for land-based chestnut missiles and baby bays with faulty guidance systems.
Bell boot shrapnel has also been employed by certain CFC riders at past events. The principal "bell boot bomber" is likely to be disguised as a 17+ hand dark brown tank-bodied chestnut bearing the alias, "Prince," a/k/a "Scarface."
Attendees unfamiliar with the CFC cast of characters are advised to remain within diving distance of the RV, or to wear sturdy shoes appropriate for wind sprints and tree-climbing.

Maybe you all could vote on whether I get to come. I was all excited when the last get together was announced and told my husband about this great opportunity to socialize and ride. He was extremely opposed to the trip and I whimped out rather than argue with him. Its not that he is some domineering beast, its that he is extremely overprotective of the horses and his van. Because we live in stupid Montgomery Village which has covenants against pickup trucks our tow vehicle is a Chevy Astro Van. We got a Brenderup and generally it hauls well but it does strain on hills. No real problems on highways however.
The horses are stabled in Libertytown, MD in Northern Frederick County. A barnmate schooled at FFP a month or so ago and said the trip took her and hour and ten minutes. She has a nice diesel truck so the same drive will probably take us and hour and a half.
So this is where you all come in. Am I a selfish and insensitive lout for wishing to haul the horses an hour and a half to participitate in this fine event? Or is my husband being too protective of the horses (who both haul fine)?
My friend with the diesel is riding at the Jenny Camp horse trials that day, so hitching a ride with her or borrowing her truck is out.
Hubby did put the van in for an oil change last night so maybe he is weakening. Any arguments in favor of going that I can offer him will be gratefully accepted.

The only time trailer access to the back parking area (by CC) is restricted is when they are actually runnng a competition on the CC course, and it crosses the road.
Someone mentioned that they were hauling a horse there for a PC testing. It is JUST within the realm of posibility that part of the testing MAY require closing that road for a short time, but I sincerely doubt it.
I'll probably just bring bread and cheese.
artienallie
Nov. 9, 2001, 07:25 AM
Janet, I doubt they'd close off the road for this - it's a D-2 rating, and the girl has chickened out (again!) so I don't think it's an issue anyway.
Now I have to decide if I'm coming sans-horses or bringing at least Frankenstein's mare.

Elghund, others out that way, coming from Rt 15 S through Leesburg, is it best to take the Greenway to the Dulles Toll road to the Fairfax County Parkway or to go down Rt 7?

Take the Greenway to the Toll Road. We then take the Centreville Rd exit (first one east of rt 28) and then make the left onto Old Ox (?), the one were the park sign is.
If you have a fast toll box, you can go through with a truck and trailer for the car price.

See, that's what I was thinking. I'm already driving all the blankin' way around the beltway and there's a schooling show, I should sieze the opportunity. I had them fax one to me, but it's hard to read. There is a schooling class (2'3") from 8 to 8:45AM , then Puddle Jumpers (2'3", 2'6", 2'6") then they have other classes 3'-4'. The actual show starts at 9:00. Entry fees are $12 per class.

I am wearing my britches generously handed down by Kennett Square and my floppy suede half chaps. I don't own a show helmet (or a cover for the one I do wear) I figure my body is easier to spot with the white plastic on my head!
However, Mr. Wings will be a sitting duck for you all to sweetly introduce neccessary items as possible upcoming birthday and Christmas gifts for me!
"Oh, dearest ETBW, she could do so much, go so far, if she only didn't have to spend her last dime on taking such excellent care of the horses"
"That colt, Wings, Boy could ETBW do some fine stuff to bring him along next spring if she only had the right attire"
Even better! (Get the SO's to help out here)
"Our relationship sure improved after I complemented my beloved on her new riding gear, She sure looks the part now, doesn't she" Casting an admiring, proud and loving glance in the way of his partner.
Yeah, right. They will be oblivious. Oh, I can hope!

I, alas, can't cook anything a human would actually consider "food" (though I make a mean bowl of cereal /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ). I'll bring some all ages beverages: water, soda, iced teas. I'll also load up the cooler with ice and try to scrounge up some napkins, plates, etc.
Be forewarned, I loooove to take horsie pictures, so if you don't want to be captured on film, please let me know!
ETBW, that is so funny about dropping hints to Mr Wings about gifts! Last year my trainer decided she HAD to have a necklace from one of the horsey catalogs. She left catalogs open to that page all over the house, but hubby wasn't picking up on it. So she asked us all to drop hints like "you know, I saw a necklace that would look great with that sweater you're wearing" everytime her hubby was around. Didn't work. She got a bracelet. /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif However, it worked out in the end. She loves the bracelet even better than she liked the necklace.
