I know this topic is old but its a fun topic even for the Jrs to read....does anyone remember horses named:
Toast Of The Town(showed in the first years with Holly Cristo)
Finnagan(showed in the Jrs and Eq)
both horses did really well in National standings and Finnagan did the Medals

We go over to John Deleyer's place a lot for some real fun schooling shows. He's a NUT but one of the nicest people I've ever met. He and his wife Marcia show jumpers in the a shows in Texas and do quite well, one of thier riders won a gambler's choice class at Pin Oak in april this year. There are some weeks in Texas where there are no a shows so he does local shows at his place. His little girl has started showing over x-rails this year, she's a cutie! His Mom was here visiting in the early spring and she had some great stories!!!! She's a real nice and funny lady; she still talks to John like he's a kid!

Are you thinking of Marike Bartlett? I don't recall her riding Toast of the Town- but I'm sure Laurie and Jennifer LaFavers did, back in the early 90s. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

He was a big chestnut horse - same one?

Whever asked how long I've been riding, I always say, well, other than occasional trail rides with my dad at a hack stable (Wagon Wheel? in Happauge), I rode one summer at camp---that camp was Equitation Lodge and a dream come true as the only real riding lessons I had ever had until I was in my 30's.
I remember a big grey called Sir Winston or Sir Galahad but the one I truly loved was a little white horse called Snowball. She was the horse everyone wanted to ride at the two camp horseshows,as she practically guaranteed a blue ribbon. I should know, at the first show I drew Pal (a skinny palamino) and got zip (unless you count the purple ribbon given to all the losers). At the second show I got the blue, on Snowball of course. I still have a small piece of her beautiful white tail pasted into an old scrapbook.
My mother only let me go to Equitation Lodge for one summer because she had to kepp coming out to get me when I fell off and got knocked unconscious, got a bad case of sun poisoning because I was allowed to spend all my time around the barn, cleaning tack, cleaning horses, and wasn't required to go swimming or participate in all the other activities offered. What's so strange about that?
Anyway, years later, when I got to Bay Shore high school, I realized that Mr. Bateman, the cute history teacher who all the girls had a mad crush on, was the same guy I had seen around the camp!
I rode some Cherry Meadow horses after Mrs. Sachey had sold it. Anyone remember Censored--a big grey who shook his head all the time, and Cinnamon--a little chestnut packer?

I remember Censored!!! From the Sachey Days!!! I rode there for 10 or so years- boarded my first horse there, in the late sixties.

Boy - talk about a "blast from the past"!!!
I remember as a horse-crazy kid pressing my nose against the car window as we'd drive past - usually enroute to the Huntington Mall (back then, the only large shopping center within a decent driving distance from Setauket).
It looked so "terrific" to a little kid then. How I'd probably be ranting & raving now about those skinny horses standing tacked up out in the sun waiting to be hired out.
Didn't that place burn down eventually, or was it just eventually razed? Since I barely remember what I had for breakfast this morning, I don't have much of a chance of recalling something from 40 years ago. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
My body is a temple - unfortunately, it's a "fixer- upper".

You're absolutely right, ccoronois...
I was thinking of Galahad.
Here's one place probably no one remembers. CAMP TABAT (Uncle Ben & Aunt Kitty), a day camp in Blue Point. They had some horses, killer
rejects, mostly, but my love affair with all things equine began there.
We rode in a group once or twice a week, Brownie was the best, Bones was realy bones and Mabel the mule was the one everyone dreaded having to ride, not to mention the old army saddle I often got stuck with. Instructor was Mr. Robinson and sidekick was Richie.
All I remember is one test we had to do to get an award badge at the end of the summer. We had to intentionally fall off the horse, to practice rolling. It took me 3 hours to get up the nerve. But I did it...with a little push from the trainer.
Not that it helped any. In the many, and I mean many times I've fallen since then, the one and only time I decided to roll after a fall, I rolled right uinder the horse's legs!
One other "activity" at the camp was picking up dried manure from the front yard (by hand) because the horses were turned out there at night I think. You had to see the look on my montherr's face when she came out unexpectedly one day to pick me up. "All this money I'm paying and you have to pick up sh*t?" That was my last summer at Camp Tabat. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
But on "Parents Day", at the end of the summer, they shipped in really nice horses from a real stable, I suppose. And those were the horses we had to ride (catchride!) on Parents Day. It was the first time we even got to see these horses, let alone ride them. No warmup area at that camp. Don't know how we all (pre/pre-novice level) survived.
But it was a thrill to actually sit on a real horse for 5 minutes.

ME! ME! ME! I started at Yohai's and I very well remember GM teaching there. I had a very nice experience wh him when I was a kid. I rode at Thomas's in the summer before I got a horse then boarded forever at Roche's Brookville Boarding Stable. I used to hack all over Old Brookville and Old Westbury. I showed horse for Mr. And Mrs. Wiesenfeld and others. Remembered most of those folks you mentioned. I thought LI was THE place to be for horsey stuff. I later worked the tracks - Aqueduct, Belmont and occassionally went south with the horses to other tracks.
What great memories! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You said you rode for Mr & Mrs W. back in the 70's please email me , I grew up with them late 60's to mid 70's before I went to the track. Learned to jump on Diamond Cutter and was the first to ride Acutron as a 2 year year old two days off the track ! 18ct and 20ct were some strong pulling things out on the powerlines too. And I sooo remember the late night Horse shows in the middle of the winter at Jericho! Who Are YOU?

I will email you both when I get home.
I rode Accutron after Sue Ford went to the track - I rode him in AO hunter. I rode 18kt in the Junior Jumpers and then in Imtermediate before Harry decided to send him to Ira's place in PA to retire(his suspensory's gave out.) Kept my own horses at Brookville Boarding and I used to ride occassionally for Bob Quinn -his sale horses and anyone else who would let me.When Harry W. moved out of the back yard barn in Brookville I kept a few lay ups there as well as my own jumpers and ponies. Great memories!
Oh, my name - Pris McCormick

WOW...So the cute teacher became a doctor, Dr. Bateman. I bet the swooners would have had a field day with that news. He had to have been the Dr. Kildare of his class! Any chance he became an orthopedic surgeon? LOL!
About the schoolies at EL, Brigadoon sounds familiar but it's been a long time so I'm not sure. Don't know if Snowball was there when you were, but she was a legend...probably was a cherished private horse at one time, but as a schoolie, worth her weight in gold I'd imagine. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ok, picture this. Crazy small chestnut stallion (Accutron) with very bad rider (me) who had to yell on my way to the outside course "Heads up! Crazy colt coming through!" At which Accutron would be yelling and screaming as I would attempt to get him through the throngs of horses standing around the outside course. He would then behave very badly(yelling and trying to ..ahem... make contact.. with other female horses) until I got his nose pointed at the first jump. At that point we would either have a great round or we would be fighting the whole trip and he would pop every fence.
That rider would have been me trying to slink away was me /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif However, for some reason , I never had those issues in the adult medal classes and we did pretty good there.

Hi Penny - You would definitely not remember me since I was a little kid showing school horses in maiden / novice / limit in those days. But I remember you because I LOVED the way you judged (since, of course, you always seemed to give me good ribbons). I always wanted to go to the shows where you were judging. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
You might remember one of the trainers that I rode with for awhile back in the 70s - Lynn Danes (later Lynn Rogers). From what I hear, she's returned to riding recently after a long break.
As for me, now I'm an, ahem, older adult (43 yrs old) back to riding and showing after a 20-year hiatus to do the college and career thing. I have 3 horses in CT and do the adult eq and hunters on (mostly) the local circuit.
Love the memories!

Hi-Penny, Of course you know who this is. Evening Call's mother in the 70's. Still at it in 2000's. Too dumb to stop. See Sue Humes often. She judged a show I was in last year and nearly fell over that I am still doing this. You brought back a lot of memories with the names you mentioned from Ralph's. Most of them faded into oblivion, sadly. Have been riding at Neal's as well as at home, so what comes around goes around. Holy Shnikies! This is a trip. I'm a bit after the 70's (born 78' if that counts). I recognize many of the names and places you all are discussing. I'm still in touch w/ Colleen Kelly, used to train with her. I am going to print this out and mail it to her!
As for Belmont/Babylon riding stables. I used to lease a horse there and went to summer camp there as well. I rode Randi, Cheyanne, Max....there was a trainer who had a horse named Demon and a blond trainer who had really funky finger nails. I hope that place is better now than when I was there...it was really the pits...through the early 90's I guess. Mrs. Russo, that's a blast from the past for me.
Anyone know how Parkview Riding Stables is w/ Elanna I think and Jackie(my first trainer). They were so nice, not a big show barn but a good solid program and nice people. I remember Romeo and Virgil and a little pony named Josie.
The last barn I spent any time at was Knoll Farm w/ Anne and David Gribbons. I adored Metallic. Someday.....yah right! I have heard that they have since sold the facility. It was beautiful. I rode hunter/jumper at a dressage barn...I wasn't scared!
I think my pony is still at Foxrun/Majestic....where Ross and Marty trained, not sure if they are still there. The first pony I showed, a pony named Corri - Coppercoin I half boarded at Knoll Farm must be old as dirt now, but I here he is still alive, running away with little kids and dumping them!
I remember Thomas's winter series and Country Fair! They were so much fun! I wish we had a little "hometown" circuit like that where I am now.

Alana and Mike sold Parkview a couple of years ago. They bought a beautiful barn in Ocala to "retire" to, but I guess they got bored down there http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif and moved back to LI. They now own and operate Greenrose Farm (formerly Rolling Green Farm) in Manorville.
Not sure how well you knew the people at Parkview, but if you remember Andrea, she's the one who now owns Knoll Farm. She trains with Anne, and Anne still has her house nearby as well as her private barn at Knoll. She still operates out of there most of the year, but spends the winter in FL at her new barn near Orlando. I'm not 100% on this, but fairly certain Metallic still goes to FL with Anne...the rest of the year he's at a farm in Martha's Vinyard.
Majestic has been Waterford for a while now. Ross and Marty both still have clients there, but they pretty much "based" out of other barns....Ross mainly in Nassau and Marty in Suffolk.

It's a small, small world! Glad to here everyone is doing well and still horsey!
I always wanted to ride Zanadu(big white horse) at Parkview but I was a WAY beginner then and well...not a chance! Still have pics of little Josie somewhere...if I can find my PV pics I'll share them.
Hey...From Parkview, do you know or know of a girl, well young woman now, named Stacy Munoz who boarded and then eventually bought a horse named Roxanne??? Big, chestnut mare stalled next to JJ(bay TB)..I think?
Who was Andrea's horse? I'm horrible with names...people names anyhow. Description
please...my memory is failing.
I used to love watching Anne ride...she wasn't in town much, but when she was...
Is Kathy still BM? She always tolerated the barn rats(kids and teenagers) really well. God gave that woman patience.
Sorry...I'm digging for info...now I'm curious and enjoying the trip down memory lane.
Thanks!

YES, I know Stacey well! In fact, she had Roxanne when I first met her...she was doing the mini's with her then I think. She sold Roxanne eventually and got a TB gelding named Sam (Roxanne was a horse with a big heart, but the bigger stuff was getting to be tough on her). She left PV and trained with Frank DiMarsico for a time, ended up selling Sam a couple of years ago. She's pretty busy these days with school and work, but I see her at horse shows here and there.
I don't know Kathy at Knoll...don't think she's still there. The current barn manager is Steve...he used to be at Parkview too. BTW, Andrea had a horse named Bachelor.

Please do tell Stacy that Mara Kennedy says Hi and sends her warmest regards! We used to be in lessons together with Jackie...semi-privates...she rode little Virgil and myself, Romeo. I left PV to go to "the big show barn", where I was too cool might I add, started training with Colleen Kelly when she had her breef stint at Knoll Farm. Then left w/ Colleen to train privately at her place.
Anyhow, sounds like we were both doing the same thing...I guess at differnt times b/c I never caught up with her on the circuit. We remained friends, after I left PV, for some time then just lost touch eventually. She was awesome and her family were the sweetest people! I definitely wish her the best!

Boobada...which Jackie did you ride with at PV? There is still a Jackie there teaching and managing the barn. Also, Josie's name is immortalized on the wall of her old stall. Paco retired...did you know Paco?

HEY MARA!
It's Stacey! Wow what a small world! Jane emailed me the topic so I could read and WOW! How are ya? You still riding? I just sold my horse in November 01 and now I'm back in school. I still ride at my barn and I ride for the equestrian team for Stony Brook. I always wondered what happened to you. I can't believe I didn't run into you at any of the shows. I think my email is in my profile. Email me so we can catch up.

For the life of me I can't remember Jackie's last name. She was full figured, brown hair, brown eyes and a very good trainer, not into frills but good, solid basics.....HEY STACY! Which Jackie did we train with?
Yes I remember Paco! I'm not sure how to post pics on this site or even if you can so if any PV people want to see a not so good pic of me & Josie(19huh..cough, cough..88') and a pic of Blitzen probably a year or 2 later, go to horse city under hunter-jumper-topic, my parents confiscated all my other PV pics!: Parkview horses. Stacy...I'll email you! Thanks Jane!

Oh my! Blitzen is still alive and kicking! He is like 100 years old now, but he is owned privately and living his goldenyeas to the fullest. His owner rides him bareback with a halter and lead!
Jackie IS the barn manager and still kicking as well. She's a good friend...I've learned much from her. The barn is owned by the Minieri's now...wonderful people. You should come by and say hello to Jackie.
Definitely post that picture.
