RIP a beautiful rider with hands like silk. She went back home to Canada and lost her battle with damn cancer.

Very sorry to hear this. She rode for us years ago and was nothing short of amazing. She always expected the best from anything she rode--and the horses loved her for it. RIP Martha.

I was fortunate enough to have her ride and train some of my horses as well. She was truely a wonderful and beautiful rider. She had a depth of knowledge that will truely be missed.

So much talent lost far too soon. Marth, I hope you are free of pain and have found peace.

There's a picture of Martha on Peggy Smith's homepage at Upperville on a horse that used to be at our barn named Kentucky Glenn. I can't remember the exact year but I want to say it was either 2004 or 2005.

Glenn is the chestnut horse in the upper left hand corner of the group of photos. IIRC he was champion in the Small Hunters that year.

Of all the pro riders I've ever seen, it was Martha I most wanted to ride like. She was magic. Such a sad story. Hope she has found peace at last.

Exactly my reaction to Martha's riding....magical....she had a magical connection with a horse and when she was on your horse, it became her horse!!!

I was lucky enough to have her show my $10,000 mare a few times, and she made her look like a million bucks! I got some great photos I'll always treasure. RIP Martha.

I too was at a loss for words as for how to describe her riding...:"magical" suits...someone else called her "poetry in motion". Just one of those riders (and I can probably count on one hand the others who give me this same feeling) you watched in awe, like you had just witnessed something surreal.

Very sad news indeed. She was a real character and rode like she was born in boots and breeches....never saw her ride a horse that didn't like her. RIP Martha.
