Here's a fun topic (I think http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif)

What show names do you just ADORE and maybe wish you had thought of...yet they have either been used WAY too much or are the names of very well known horses?

I'm actually not such a big fan, but "Justin Time" has been WAY over used. For a three socked horse I like "Lost My Sock" and "Dressed in the Dark" but both have been used a lot.... I also really like "Lightning Strike" and "Lightning Round" for jumpers...

I think "Relevant" is an AWESOME name and would have used it, if the more famous horse had't beaten me to it. A lot ofdrink names are way overdone e.g. Martini, Southern Comfort etc.

Anything with Magic, Spell or Dream in it..especially in the Children's and Ponies...way overused.

Also names referring to color like the Lot's of Spots or Dots. If I've seen one Pinto named Magic Marker..... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif....

Then there's all those puns on the Dun color in the AQHA and APHA..She Dun It, Dun Right, Dun Broke..and so forth.

I know it's tough to name them but.......

are you talking about the large pony that is Majic Marker (i'm pretty sure it is a "j" in there)? If so i love that name! I think it is so precious!

I don't think it is over used but i wish i had come up with the name Where There's Smoke. I think that is just too cute.

I agree with Findeight---ALL of those have been used too often. Add "Wind" to it, too. And for a barn name, I am SO sick of "Spirit"---just check how many horses 'happen' to be named that on online ads. Anything with "Class" in it seems to be a bit overused, too.

I hate it when people use variations of a famous name. Remember Secretariat? I think they named an Arabian stallion Secretariatt or something similar. Come on, now!

It does, however, seem difficult to find something TRULY unique, which is why I'm keeping my "special names for future horses" secret. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kiwieventer, I've been thinking of using "Moko" as a call name for a future dog. I think moko is Maouri tattooing, isn't it?

My TB's original registered name was Apalookee, but someone had it changed through the Jockey Club to Arbor Gate. His barn name is "Khan" for Khan Singh in "The Wrath of Khan."

I also like to use names inspired by favorite books and characters. I have a Shetland Sheepdog, "Stitch In Snow" (book by Ann McCaffrey) called Jenny (character in the story) and another dog registered as "As My Whimsy Takes Me", called Peter. AMWTM is the family motto of the Whimsey family, and Peter is Lord Peter Whimsey (books by Dorothy L. Sayer).

Of course, my red Doberman, Darnit Garnet, got the most comments when printed in a show catalog... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I love the QH names with "Heza" or "Sheza" etc. Some of them, at least. Some of them get kind of stupid, but I love the more creative ones. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I like "Silver Lining" for greys. I think that's sweet.

I saw an appaloosa, white with full body spots, and his name was "Pongo." I thought that was ADORABLE. Especially since I was walking my dalmatian at the time. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think "So-and-so's Rebel" is often kind of overdone.

I think the buckskins or duns with the word "Dun" in them is cute in a punny sort of way, but also a little overdun. (http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

I love song names for show names, too. Sometimes those are cute. ^_^ Can't think of any other names right now, but I'll be back! :P

I have a retired show mare whose name I love: Manderley. It's from the opening line of a classic book by Daphne DuMaurier called "Rebecca". The line is "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." I love that book, love that line, absolutely adore that horse.

I've never seen another horse with the name, and never met another person who recognized the literary reference. I'm really not THAT old.

I like my mare's registered name, So Fine. It's been used at least twice for race horses, but I haven't seen it in the show ring, at least not around here. I'm hoping to use it because it fits her so well.

My ID comes from the first Thoroughbred I ever rode, Tory Relic (registered), but was called "Rebel." He was ancient when I was riding him, but he was shown in Camden by Marla Cribb back in the 70s. He was a good one.

I gotta be honest... I don't dig on the silly overuse of bloodline names in breeds. Like, "I have to pick one part of the most famous sires/dams in my horse's pedigree to give her a name, so let me see... Scribble's... Badger... Fruitbat... Scribbles Badger Fruitbat! Great name!" Or as someone mentioned, all the Heza Sheza Ima Ura names. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Oh yeah, and anything spelled with a y instead of an i, or a k instead of a c: Kharyzma! Kharla! Fyne Dyning! Gymmye a break http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Eh, there are too many Kiss Me Kates (which is why Kately switched back to her "real" show name... not the App registered name, which involves not only the bloodline nod, but a big fat R instead of our. Whoo!). But she really was a big, squishy Kiss Me, Kate - she gave kisses and everything..

The Tymes bug me.. Touch of anything unless it is the one and only Touch of Class. My biggest annoyance is anything that's insulting to the horse - like some idiot wanted to call my mare "No Tail 2 Tell." Yeah, let's bomb the spelling AND mock her Appy heritage.. loser.

Hey, Tory Relic - would Marla Cribb be Marla Tupper pre-Tuppering, or are there other Marla's around Camden?

Yep, that's the one and only (well, there may BE other Marla's, but...) She used to let me ride her horses back when I was grooming race horses in Camden and we were in Saratoga together one year. She's now Tupper but I haven't seen her in a donkey's years. I really should look her up...

Hey, the Original Poster asked about names that you like BUT are overused...not your favorites.

I will add on to that Arabian observation that adds another ending consonent(sp?) creating things like Secretaiatt, Boldd Rulerr and Baskk.

Hey folks, those names were either overused or taken by those more deserving then yours years back...THINK harder and be more original. Create your own identity instead of piggybacking on others...sorry, still have Arab contacts and it is a pet peeve.

I agree she's awesome. I knew she was involved with the polo field, she and Sam practically saved that single handedly from what I've heard (well, they were the driving force). At some point, I'd like to join the hunt, but not right now (still getting fit!). Bleck http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif Anything with "Dance" or "Dancer" in it. Anything. We had an Arab Named TheWinDancer and a TWH named something Dancer both in the barn at one time...and yes, both were called Dancer by the owner. Then, at shows there are other Dancers. *gag gag gag*

Since the topic kinda split...I always wanted to name a jumper Hang Time. And I think something off of two of the funnies movies I've ever seen (Super Troopers and Office Space) would be hysterical. But I'm dorky like that. I just bred for my next jumper, and what did I send her papers in with? A nod and bow to her sire's name with Again after it because they look alike. I am pretty sure there is already one out there, but if I ever had an Almosta line pony I want to name it "Almosta Memory Now" http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I knew a horse named "Atonement" and I thought that was a good name too http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My first horse when I was 10 years old was a buckskin quarterhorse named "Pass the Buck" I called him Buck. Names like that can lead to disasterous self fulfillment - he liked to buck!! I had no idea at the time what his show name really meant so I kept it. I figured he knew his name and did not want to confuse the animal. Goes to show ya what a 10 year old knows. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

RHdobes... Don't know if anyone has mentioned it already but "Moco", (similar to Moko) that you posted for a good name is also a Spanish word for "booger". I just wanted to let you know so that if you are around Spanish speakers and they hear the name of your horse you will know where the giggles come from.

_My TB's original registered name was Apalookee, but someone had it changed through the Jockey Club to Arbor Gate. His barn name is "Khan" for Khan Singh in "The Wrath of Khan."_

What a great name. Of course, if I had a horse named Khan everyone would get very quickly annoyed at me putting on my best WS voice and yelling "Khhhhhhhaaaaaaannnn!" at the top of my lungs. But thats just me.

On the subject, I think the name "Cruise Control" is the best name for all the packer horses/ponies out there, but we have quite a few just on our local circuits, so i'd imagine there are many more out there.

I've seen some cute "Moo" names for brown/white ponies; Moolatte, Moolicousis(sp), Moo-Opoly, etc.
I had an awesome looking gelding named Heartbreak Kid. Loved that name!(horse too)
Anything to do with Vegas/Nevada or gambling seems to be overdone; Ace, Lady luck, Reno, Royal Flush, Etc.
I'm sick of all the generic barn names; buddy, bubba, bud, girly, pops, sugar, suga, sweetie, honey, man I could go on & on http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

"Ticket to Ride". Ugh. Have heard that one way too many times. Same barn also had "Strawberry Fields", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - you get the picture.

I love the literary names, since I am a former English major and a current language arts teacher. LOVE the hame "Manderley" - LOVE LOVE LOVE the book. It's a classic. My current boy is "Miles To Go", after the Robert Frost Poem (he came with the name Miles; I had to do something with it). My former Shetland Sheepdog was called "Great Expectations" (barn name: Pip). I also had a "Mina" (Dracula), and currently have one named "Emma" (Jane Austen).

I have always wanted a gorgeous, fancy mare that I could name "Breakfast at Tiffany's", barn name "Audrey". Is that overdone?

Renn/aissance

Had to bring this one back... liked it too much. ^_^

Renaissance. My defense for using this for His Fuzziness is that my trainer's first comment about him was, "He's that old Thoroughbred type; they don't make them like that anymore." (In other words: solid and slightly roman-nosed. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) He came with Intrepid John (race name) and would have been Intrepid except that it's overused and he's very, very un-intrepid. I've considered changing his name to His Highness, but John is a bad-luck name for a king, or else Opera Phantom- but I like the sound of "Renn riding Renaissance."

Little ponies named Pepper bother me.

Anything named after a designer brand! If I hear of one more Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Gucci, or Prada, I might go insane. Okay, you carry status bags, you don't need to have a status horse.

That said, I would probably find a name like Imitation Burberry amusing.

Also, wine names... we have a Tanqueray, a Crown Royal, and a Mint Julep in the barn right now, and a Hennessy who just left. Mint Julep is my trainer's stud pony, and some of his offspring have/have had names like With A Twist and Three Sheets to the Wind, who was called "Whiskey". I haven't heard too many Chardonnays or Shirazes though.

Song names really get on my nerves... you can tell what a lot of the popular songs are just by listening to the names of the Children's horses. Ocean Avenue is a major culprit. However, my trainer incorporated a song name very cleverly for one of her horses. He came with the race name "Gottagetouttahere" (I assume that that was his owner's feelings toward him, as he failed to get out'ta anywhere on the track) and was called "Gotta." So his show name became In Agottadavida. Had he been a stud, his foals probably would have been My Mirage and Iron Butterfly.

Two of my favorite names (and favorite horses) haven't been repeated to my knowledge at least. Untouchable and Lansonette. Its only from this BB that I learned the origins of Lansonette's name.

Mother's Day Angel! (she was born on mother's day) hehe - but I'm biased.

And a spin off of Harry Potter - I know this 11 hh pony who is black with a blanket - his name is Harry Spotter and his girlfriends name is Hedwig.

I also love the name "Cajun Country Girl" which is the registered name (JC) of my cousin's mare. She said it was too long and changed it to Memphis http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif

some names when re-naming her that came up that I liked were:
Tempis Fugit (already used though http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif )
Lady Rain

and her other TB I LOVED this one: Fight For Me http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif how great! and he was and eventer that went Intermidate. He tried his heart out until the end.

Most have already been mentioned. However - most commonly over used names in my area that I like -

Peter Pan (I, II, I don't care!)
Finnegan
Finn McCool (or any spelling thereof)
Picasso
Van Gogh
Sebastian
Cool Runnings
Cool Hand Luke
Anything with Cosmic, Tango, Comet, or Razzle/Razz.

How many Razzle be Dazzle's can you possibly have?!?! And I absolutely hate most of the hard liquor names - know a woman who named her dog Crown Royal, Crownie, and she's a real alcoholic. So, every time I see a horse named Black Velvet/Jack Daniels/Crown Royal/Bacardi/Schnapps/Budweiser/Heineken, I think alcoholic, regardless of who owns it!

A few memorably unique ones that aren't - Runs with Scissors, Constantinople, and Cricket Dixon's gorgeous guy, Pippin Tuck.

And of course, my greenie - American Graffiti. Nobody can knock the movie with the hot 3-window! I've never seen a horse with that name. I keep a list of names I like, many are song titles from when I was growing up, that my parents listened to - so anything from the 80's to the mid 90's.

I've never seen another horse with the name, and never met another person who recognized the literary reference. I'm really not THAT old.

I recognized it right away. That's one of my favorite DuMaurier books and Hitchcock films. I believe it was his first Hollywood film. He'd been making films in England before that.
