Hi,
Does anybody know if the collegiate alumni has a longer than average flap length? I have a collegiate diploma in 16.5 with a 13 inch flap which is just about right and I'm thinking of buying an alumni but it looks like the flap is straighter and possibly longer than the diploma. The straighter flap is ok but if it's unusually long that wouldn't be good. I would be getting a 16.5 or 17 inch. I can't seem to find a shop that has any in stock to have them check. THANKS!

IMLE the Alumni has a shorter flap then the Diploma. I believe Smart pak has a trial saddle you can ride in, with free shipping...why not try it and see how it goes!

My Alumni is at the barn, so I can't measure at the moment, but the flap has never seemed to me to be longer than the average close contact saddle. It fits neatly on top of my ap square pads (which have actually shrunken in the wash a bit). It does have the straighter flap, which suits my shortish thigh and my horse's developed shoulder.

I called smartpak and they told me that the flap was 14" but weren't sure which seat size that corresponded to. I think they were just going off some specs and didn't have an actual saddle to measure. I'm still keeping my options open. This saddle search is such a PITA. I thought it would be "fun" to shop for a new saddle. NOT!!!

Just trial a saddle from smartpak? You really can't beat it, they will pay shipping both ways, and include whichever gullet you think your horse will need. The flap size is probably about the same no matter the seat size.
