View Full Version : Horse tattoo??

Does anyone else hace one? Im thinking of getting one on my shoulder....trying to get my bf to draw it... want a jumper!!!

If you do end up getting a horse done, make sure you use an artist that does animals. As in has a whole portfolio full of awesome animal tattoos.

Also make sure the artist gets the anatomy, tack, ect exactly right on the sketch before it goes on your body.

A good friend of mine, who is not a horse person, has a horse as a part of his full sleeve. The horse's anatomy is off, so it's head and legs are a bit weird. And it has some soft of halter/bridle thing on that makes no sense, the artist obviously wasn't a horse person. Every time I look at it I'm like "bah it's wrong!". Drives me nuts. It is otherwise a beautiful piece of art.

Yes... we already threw out one pic... he does deer(ik not a hore) but has done horses for me before....as far as tack im not going to have any on...kinda want a free jumper through a horse shoe... life like. But no color...
I think itd be hard to find a horse tattoo artist! Lol

I have a very cool horse shoe on my calf, but I don't think I would ever get a horse. Just too easy to mess up. I agree with the others...find a VERY good artist and let no needle touch your skin until you are absolutely in love with the artwork.

Also, the advice my (very inked) brother gave me...how long have you been thinking about this tattoo (if this is your first?)? While he thought it was very cool I wanted a tattoo, he warned me a couple of years ago when I first started thinking about it to wait and make sure I kept coming back to wanting what I wanted. I love my artwork (he actually has a similar horseshoe, which I've always LOVED, and he helped the artist- a friend- make it perfect). I've had it well over a year, and I still get very, very happy when I see it (usually in the shower, this time of year!).

I have a half-sleeve of three horses around my upper arm, along with a sun on my shoulder. The sun was taken from a piece done during the French Renaissance and the horses were inspired by a Da Vinci sketch.

Most horse tattoos I have seen are pretty tacky, but I also find most small, easily hidden tattoos to be tacky. I would suggest actually designing your tattoo yourself, along with your tattoo artist (and make sure you put alot of thought into choosing your artist.. and don't be cheap about it either, a good artist will charge about $150 an hour). I am personally not a fan of any horse tattoos that are just a black outline with no shading or anything which seems to be alot of them.. but that's just my opinion.

I wish I had a better picture, but...

I've posted mine (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/erin7264/ta.jpg) on here before. It's had another few hours put into it since then, but is still not finished. It's a Sarah Lynn Richards watercolor.

I was going to get that on my shoulder! I didn't, in the end, but it's still one of my favorite ideas for a horsey tattoo. Very nice!

Thanks. It's still in need of major work - we added some other things around it and, rather than finishing the horse first and THEN adding, the artist decided to go ahead with the other stuff and finish the horse later. Not exactly what I'd have done, but hey. I'm guessing there's at least another 8 or so hours of work left to be done - the work in the picture was about 5 hours in.

I had debated hotly between this guy and the jumper she did, but decided I wasn't as fond of the neck on the jumper, and it wouldn't quite utilize the shape and space of my back as well.

I drew it myself and then sized it down to fit on my right shoulder.

The artist traced it and then inked it, so it looks exactly like I wanted it to.

It's in memory of my heart horse who passed away.

Awwww, I got mentioned!!

OP, be prepared to send it back a couple times. I came in with exactly what I wanted printed out. He had to re-draw it on a different kind of paper, to "transfer" it onto my skin. He made the head reeeeeeeally weird looking, from a nice typical square-ish bucket shape to a weird overly-rounded thing. He had to re-do it three times, for JUST the head. Everything else he copied over fine.

I found a pic of the kind of head (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NNn0Jb1WHHU/Tno3iUPvuQI/AAAAAAAAgE4/mEMJfB_A31U/s1600/horse-tattoo-5.jpg) he kept trying to draw. Blech...

After he put the transfer on, I double-checked it really carefully in a mirror.

I have 2. The first one is only horse related in that I am an equine vet...

The second I got in honor of my heart horse.

I'm planning a 3rd (and larger) set for my back of 3 horses in a stylized fashion, one jumper, one dressage horse and one XC horse. It's just in planning now though.

Mar. 26, 2012, 04:48 PM
I sketched mine many times before I liked how it looked.

Mar. 26, 2012, 08:51 PM
Honestly I have been planning and thinking about my tattoo for years. I have still not perfected it. I want to be certain that I will always love it no matter what.

Mar. 26, 2012, 11:57 PM
I have several but have mostly gone with tribal images.

Heinz 57 - That's gorgeous!!

I have one. A line drawing I designed when I was 16. It's very simple and you can only see it if I have a swim suit on.

Think long and hard. I was going to sneak out and get mine done with a friend when I was 17. Figured getting kicked out of the house wasn't worth it, so I waited til I was 21 and had my own health insurance (my mom's rule for permanent body altering).

I waited 5 years to get it done, never faltered on the design/ color/ location and I'm meh about it now. I like it, but I wouldn't do it again.

I like all of yours... i have deffinatly been thinking about it for a long time... i want mine realistic looking. One jumping... but thats why i keep waiting is because when my bf drew it, there was just something about the front legs chest and hooves... idk maybe i could have my step mom draw it... as she used to do tattoo flash before...just wanted my bf to do it :/

There is a saddle manufacturer who has a nice jumping horse logo. I swore it was Country, but I just checked and it's not.

Mar. 27, 2012, 03:52 PM
Man...you dont know the name of it? Lol

Mar. 27, 2012, 04:57 PM
Start Googling some of the big name saddle makers.

I checked CWD, Butet, Prestige and Devoucoux. I know it isn't Antares because they have a nice horse head/neck logo. I remember seeing this logo, a very flat-type jumping horse.

Mar. 27, 2012, 05:00 PM
I Googled "horse jumping logo (https://www.google.com/search?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=kbe&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&biw=1024&bih=625&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=horse+jumping+logo&oq=horse+jumping+logo&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_l=img.3..0.66340l66340l0l66883l1l1l0l0l0l0l93l9 3l1l1l0.frgbld.)" and found a lot of examples. Maybe you can find one in there you like...

Yes. Thank you. OP, deleting the rider off the logo and having the horse would probably be nice?

Thank you!

OMG Heinz, that is GORGEOUS. You'll have to repost when its finished.

Mar. 28, 2012, 11:08 PM
Here is mine, it is pretty small and simple but I like it. I got the idea from a bronze statue.

Mar. 29, 2012, 12:34 AM
I think the cookies art sketches would make great designs!!

Just take out the rider and its perfect!

Mar. 29, 2012, 07:37 AM
I've been contemplating a small one for a while. I was thinking of something a little more obscure... Like horse shoes, but not. Any ideas?

Apr. 1, 2012, 07:31 PM
I like that little design you guys were talking about...but its very simple.... i was starting to think that a jumping one might not be the best idea...i was thinking of this one witgout the wall

Apr. 1, 2012, 10:37 PM
I'm the subtle sort and for professional and other reasons cannot have any sort of obvious tattoo. Therefore I am going to be just like my OTTB girl and have H24596 tattooed on the inside of my upper lip:D

Apr. 1, 2012, 10:58 PM
Here is mine! I had it drawn out exactly how I wanted it and checked it before the girl actually put it on me. At first I was upset because I thought the horses looked angry. haha. I still love it and I got it 10 years ago.

I got mad though because I thought I was being all original and awesome...and have since seen it as an ornament in some different horse magazines.

ps. I definitely just sat on my keyboard to take a picture of this with my webcam. hahahahahahaha

Apr. 2, 2012, 10:47 PM
Hahaha alley thats pretty funny.... my first tattoo the same thing happened with me..kinda
i figured oh ide be original and got a buck and a doe that shape a heart...did see it on some small thing my friend showed me...and its online that another girl got!... but my antlers are different...so not the exact same! :)

Apr. 3, 2012, 04:45 AM
Like with horses, it's hard to stop with just one LOL I NEVER thought I would have a tattoo--now I have three and am contemplating what work to have done next ;) When I see a photo online of a design I like, I add it to a file on my computer of ideas and inspirations for my next tat.

Apr. 3, 2012, 08:14 AM
Hahaha oh trist me... im avoiding that!!! Lol my dad has both arms filled and has some everywhere else.... i THINK i want one on each shoulder....and a snaffle bit on my wrist but im deciding

Apr. 3, 2012, 09:17 AM
I have 2 HR tattoos. First one was 4 horse shoes across the top of my foot that look like the horse would of been trotting. Second on is a Sarah Richards water color on my forearm. It was one of a mare with a foal peaking around but I opted to only use the mare. I love both of these tattoos and they were done by a girl who has horses as well.

Apr. 3, 2012, 10:17 AM
I am totally addicted to tattoos LOL! I have a horseshoe on the inside of my left wrist, a tribal horse head on the inside of my ankle and a horseshoe with a rose that is a cover up of a 20 year old tattoo. The other 5 are non horse related :)
My daughter is getting a side piece of Sarah Lynn Richards' "Wizard" , it is coming out amazing!

Apr. 3, 2012, 12:51 PM
Did it hurt on your wrist?

Apr. 3, 2012, 01:45 PM
HorseLoverz -

LOVE your neck tat!!! :)

Apr. 3, 2012, 07:45 PM
Did it hurt on your wrist?

I have a tattoo on the inside of my wrist and it hurt a good deal more than the one on my back.

Apr. 4, 2012, 07:16 AM
Okmaybe i wont get one there! I have small wrists. The one on my hip hurt really bad, especially on my hip bone... but my wrists are sensitive

Apr. 4, 2012, 10:19 AM
Everyone's wrists are sensitive.

Aug. 22, 2013, 11:34 AM
Amazing!!! Who was the artist that did your tatoo??

Here's my only horsey tattoo.

I need to get pics of my trainer's tattoo and my friend's tat. I LOVE my trainer's one...actually thinking about covering one of mine w/ one like it. It's a fleur de lys w/ a horse jumping across it. It's hard to describe. She wants to make it our logo for the barn.

Friend's is a fleur de lys w/ a horse jumping out of it. It's bigger and detailed. Artist used a picture of her horse for it. I'll see them this weekend and get pics to share :)

Aug. 22, 2013, 09:00 PM
This is my new one. Close to my wrist, but really didn't hurt very much at all!

Even though it's small and simple, I still had my artist re-draw it twice. It had to look like a horseshoe and not a football team logo!

Aug. 23, 2013, 01:45 PM
Ditto the comments about being really careful about your art. And choose your tattoo artist carefully as well. For god's sake, FIND A GOOD ONE. Definitely not the time to go with the lowest bidder. If you have to save up for a while, it will be worth it. My niece has 2 tattoos that are so awful I want to cry every time I see them. Badly drawn, badly executed, and hers for life.

Aug. 24, 2013, 02:40 PM
I currently work at a tattoo shop as a piercer. I've talked with a few of the artists about getting a photo realism horse done, and although I've seen their work, I'm STILL completely unsure about whom I'm going to go to. I know them very well and I've seen them do photo realism before. I just don't want it screwed up, because I know that the slightest imperfection will make me very sad.

I would honestly save up a ridiculous amount of money, and find someone who is nationally renowned for doing portraits. Don't just walk into any old shop, leaf through books and pick one right then, and there. Research. Read tattoo magazines. A lot of big names get featured in there, and if you can manage to correspond with them and set up a consultation, it is so WORTH IT.

Aug. 24, 2013, 06:29 PM
When my mare died a few years ago (she was 32) I had her lip tattoo put on the back of my neck. Pretty simple, but people always ask what it means. An easy way to assure she will never be forgotten. At least while I have a neck, lol

Aug. 24, 2013, 08:55 PM
Since we're sharing.... I love tattoos, and a good horse ones is one I always wanted, but wanted it to be right son took time in getting it. I didn't want to do Mt heart horse b. C I knew if it wasn't perfect in would hate and be disappointed forever so it wanted one that envelopedeeverything I love about horses, not just him... I went with a sketch type rather then your typical.... Love it :)

^ That's fantastic!
