Figured I would make a discussion thread for those that will be tuning into usefnetwork.com at 1:00 today for round one of the selection trials.
Here is the order of go: http://www.horsejunkiesunited.com/2012/03/20/order-of-go-for-us-show-jumping-selection-trial-1-hju-live-chat-wednesday-at-1250-pm/

Any favorites you're excited to see? I'm hoping for clear rounds from Flexible and Romantovich Take One.

It only starts today? I thought it was yesterday. I like Beezie and Lucy Davis, although is Beezie riding any other horses in the trials since she made the long list on one of hers? You can see I'm not very up to date on what's going on. My favorite riders tend to be on teams other than the US.

I'm planning to watch :)

Most excited to see Springsteen, Goutal, McFarlane and my favorite horse (so far), Indigo, and Simon. Sadly, I will be missing Springsteen as I have a class with my *favorite* teacher. Haven't been paying attention to the Jumpers lately, so I will be picking more favorite as they go.

Good luck riders!

I thought I read somewhere or maybe it was during indoors that Reed Kessler couldn't compete in Nations Cup classes because of age? Am I completely mistaken or thinking of somebody else? Or are the Olympics excluded from those rules?

Boy, you can't tell the players without a program.

There are horses named:

Uceko
Uriko
Uraya

competing.

Anyone know their breeding? Do they come from the same line?

Lord Helpus
Mar. 21, 2012, 12:32 PM
What is the best guesstiment of when the class will end?

Of course it depends on the # of horses in the jump off, but if we say that there are 6 in the jump off and 37 in the first round + a course adjustment -- what does that equal?

I need to know when I am going to ride my own horse.

Not sure on the breeding but they could all be born the same year and registered with the same studbook. I will do some research since I am procrastinating homework ;)

Alright, someone want to give a simple explanation of how the scoring works for these endless rounds?
And how much influence do these selection trials have on the Olympic teams?

Today was a speed class, so a clear round was the goal. Next 2 rounds are Nations Cup format, and the last round is a jump-off class.

I believe GM et al. will take riders from these trials and put them onto the long list, where they will then have to proceed to one/some of the mandatory outings later this spring? I'm not really up on the precise procedure.

Lord Helpus
Mar. 21, 2012, 02:54 PM
In the past, haven't these trials (plus the byes) figured out the 8 horses who will go to Europe early in the summer.

IIRC, there is an A team and a B team. Each team does a different "tour".

The A team is comprised of the horses/riders who are most likely going to end up on the final team, whereas the B team is comprised of horses that did very well at the trials and are a possibility, but they will have to shine brightly to remove an A team rider from consideration.

For instance, I think that Reed Kessler, no matter how well she rides here would end up on the B team, just because of her age and relative lack of experience in such important events.

I believe there was a thread earlier about the selection process. All of these riders are on the long list. These events will rank them. Then they'll have to do another outing this summer. Europe doesn't count anymore because we're no longer qualified for the Super League. Then the selection committee will narrow it down.

It's in the prize list: http://www.usef.org/documents/highPerformance/showJumping/OGPrizeList.pdf

Rounds 1-4: Time allowed, no jump-off

Round 4 will have a jump-off in the case of a tie for national champion or reserve champion. The jump-off will not count for Olympic qualification purposes.

This is reporting that the first round was speed, the second and third rounds are nations cup format, and the final round is jump-off format. http://www.horsejunkiesunited.com/2012/03/18/us-show-jumping-selection-trials-list-of-riders-and-schedule/

Molly Sorge
Mar. 21, 2012, 10:38 PM
The round today was definitely not a speed round. There was a time allowed, and faults were assessed if riders exceeded that time allowed, but riders with equal faults were tied, not ranked by time.

All four rounds will be judged the same way, with a jump-off for the national title and prize money if necessary after round 4 as joiedevie99 stated.

Tomorrow there are two rounds, but it is not being run as a Nations Cup format--the two courses will be different.

For those wondering how the selection process works, after the trials, the horses and riders named to the Long List must compete in two of the four observation events that will occur between May and June of this year. The events are:

Del Mar National Horse Show (May 1-6)
Kentucky Spring Horse Show (May 8-13)
Devon (May 29-June 2)
Spruce Meadows (June 13-17)

The final team will be chosen after the evaluation of the performances of the Long Listed riders (including those with byes, like McLain)

So, it is still a long road ahead after this week! Best of luck to everyone :)

Yes, sorry about the confusion... I was given all that info by the official press office but I think they used those terms to differentiate the classes. By Nations Cup, they meant riders have to do 2 rounds on the same day - but they will be different courses.

Do Richard Spooner/Cristallo have a bye? I find it odd that they are not participating in the selection trials.

They are not participating. Richard thinks the selection process is too subjective and doesn't want to put his horse through all these jumps to not make the team. In 2008 he finished VERY well in the trials and was listed as a 6th option.

Me too.

The first horse is not supposed to start until 8. One of their tweets says: Take a look at tonight's Trial #3 course map while you wait for the jumping to begin. http://t.co/8uAncKzE

All of which leads me to believe the coverage online won't start until later, even if the festivities have already begun.

Just looking at the diagram I would turn left and circle back.Might depend on how your horse feels about palm trees. And how you want to approach the bend from 11 --> 12. Which, in turn, depends on how that rides. So, IMHO, 9-->10-->11-->12 is all part of the same decision.

Tao Tao 3 gave the crowd a few gasps, especially at the last fence, but he finished.

Beezie & Simon had a clear, smooth round with 1 time fault.

Jessica Springsteen & Vornado had a rail at the final oxer but were within the time allowed.

I believe Nick had one rail down when I lost my feed so I missed his ride. Brianne Goutal had the last two fences down for 9 faults.

Katie Dinan & Nougat De Vallet finished with either 5 or 8, the font was too small to read but know she had at least one rail. Then my feed went out (from USEF's end, not mine) during the replay.

Though everybody has made this thread about Reed ( and certainly this was a fantastic accomplishment for her) I am wanting to bring up Margie. Not only has she had an incredible, long and successful career but she may be one of the most liked and respected horsemen at the show anywhere she goes. You would be hard pressed to find anybody to say a bad word about this gal. And she loves horses. And she has always been willing and able to help fellow pros and other horses and riders as well. My hat is off to her and her lovely horse. I hope their luck and skill continue so that she can make it to London.May the force be with her.

Does anyone know how big Indigo is? He just looks like such a monster in the ring! Not just height-wise, either. He's just so thick; anyone have his stats?

Not sure, but remember that Margie is pretty short...maybe 5'1''? 5'2''? She makes him look even more massive.

If she's lucky she's 5'1". Ronnie Mutch used to tell his short riders to watch her and see what concessions she made to classical style in order to be able to do what she does. He had some very interesting thoughts on it. She has always made it work fine no matter what size or type of horse.

Margie is pure grit and determination, with a hell of a lot of talent mixed in. I always love hearing her story because she did not grow up with money and came up through the ranks by riding the horses that nobody else could or wanted to. She's such an inspiration to people like me who are not as fortunate as most on the circuit.

As long as I have been watching Margie ride (many more years than I care to admit lol) I can't remember ever seeing her on anything other than very large horses. Has she ever ridden a small-ish, refined GP horse? I can't think of one. But I do know she can make those huge animals she rides fly like they have wings. She strikes me as completely fearless.

Love watching her ride, year after year.

That's what struck me about him- that he's so unrefined. Lovely for sure, but not dainty. He looks to be more tank than Ferrari. Just makes him all the more impressive, though. What a lovely pair!
