View Full Version : Suffolk Downs Closed for Winter, Some Horses Still Need to Sell; Updated List on P27
17handtb
Oct. 25, 2005, 11:45 AM
Hi everyone,
Because there are SO many nice, nice horses currently for sale (many for very cheap prices) at Suffolk Downs - and because the track is closing for the winter at the end of November, and may reopen with far fewer horses in attendance next year, depending on whether slots come to MA...
CANTER NE is hosting a special 2-day sale weekend at Suffolk, this Saturday and Sunday, 10/29 and 10/30. Volunteers will be at the track and available to escort prospective buyers around from 8 AM until noon (given the number of horses on the grounds, we request that you please arrive by 9:30 AM if you want to do some serious looking).
You can see a full list of horses for sale at Suffolk here:
http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/index3.htm (listings continue over the next 4 pages - we're in the process of uploading our latest batch of photos)
If you're interested in attending this weekend, or have questions about a particular horse or horses, please send a PT; e-mail canterne@canterusa.org; or call 781-354-6291. Thanks!
NOTE: If not sold over the weekend, these horses will still be available (though time is of the essence, as many trainers are already making plans to ship out)...so if you can't make it to Suffolk on the 29th or 30th, but are still interested in a particular horse, please call the trainer in the listing to schedule an appointment on another day, or to otherwise make sale arrangements!

Wow - at a very quick glance there are some niiiiiice horses here. I'll finish looking later, got to run out for a few. Wish we could have had a little more notice about the sale though. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH! I am away this weekend! Could I possibly go on Friday????
17handtb
Oct. 25, 2005, 12:42 PM
To clarify, you can STILL buy any of these horses any time other than this weekend - the only "special" element of the weekend is that CANTER volunteers will be there to escort buyers on both days.
The horses on the site will still be for sale before this weekend, and, if not sold over the weekend, will remain available through the close of the meet or until their trainers ship out. You can call the trainers as noted in the listings if you'd like to go see a particular horse or horses on any other day. (Please act as soon as you can, though, as trainers are already making plans to ship out and some are getting antsy about placing their horses.)
In addition, CANTER volunteers will also be available to take buyers around the track every Saturday morning until the end of November.
Sorry for the confusion! If you see a horse or horses you like, but can't make it to the track this weekend - please, by all means, call the trainer!

Someone needs to buy Centcom - he is a well put together horse! I can't afford another, or that would be the one I would go to look at...
Wicked Whitney is nice too, and hasn't raced either.
If anyone sees either of these horses, let me know what they look like in person - so I can drool and kick myself long distance!

I really have to say this is the nicest group of TBs I've ever seen. I can't honestly remember *ever* having surfed a CANTER site & having this many horses I really like. (I'm usually lucky if there is one, with a couple of "maybes"!)
After due consideration my first round picks would be:
Assaulting Ride
Stacy's First
Stolen Groom
Abeam
Silent Echo
Imagineering
Dayofthehunt
Clever Brick
Any way to get pedigree info on Stacy's First??
Edit: Sigh. If anyone's thinking of getting a truckload together to ship south, let me know...

You guys have good taste! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Let's see, a couple of notes...
Assaulting Ride - just shipped to run at Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio, but has the same trainer, so call if you're interested. Very regal, classy, hard-trying boy, as is Stolen Groom (he might be in OH now too).
Silent Echo has been sold.
Bytheliteofthemoon is on her trainer's farm (that's why we don't have her pic). She's very cute and almost jet black. She has been ridden away from the track.
Cashmere Kelly is lovely but just won a race in style, so her asking price is likely to stay pretty firm.
Forever Riccio is a little ouchy because he's recovering from an abscess, but you could not ask for a gentler, more kid-safe, lovable, follow-you-around horse at the track. It took us literally 20 minutes to take his picture because he just wanted to come up and snuggle with his groom!
Third Turn Angel's photo should be up in the next day - she's cute and has been well cared for by her trainer, who loves her to pieces.
Stacy's First is actually StacEy's First, and I'm quite sure her trainer will take less than her original asking price (since she hasn't exactly been burning up the track!). Here is her pedigree:
http://www.pedigreequery.com/staceys+first
Keep in mind that Lorraine Horse Transport regularly runs shipments from Suffolk down to Ocala, FL, so if you're located anywhere along that path, you can probably get a pretty good deal on shipping. Lorraine's # is 800-423-5935.

What would be the story on these three? (feel free to PT me if you want to tell me that way)
Mystery Water (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/MysteryWater.JPG)
1113. Mystery Water, Bay gelding, 16 hands, 3 years old
This handsome and nicely packaged youngster separated his hoof wall and had a hoof resection; trainer doesn't want to push him back into race training. His hoof is still healing, and he will require some time; trainer will gladly put prospective buyers in touch with the vet who treated Mystery. Price: $500 to good home. Call Ron Dandy, 508-801-1173
Day Run (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/DayRun.JPG)
1028. Day Run, Bay gelding, 15.3hh, 4 years old
Good disposition, nicely made, cute! Price: $2,500 NEGOTIABLE! Call Bobby Raymond at 401-255-9642
Zulu (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Zulu.JPG)
1117. Zulu, Dark bay stallion, 15.3 hands, 6 years old
Trainer loves this boy - says he's "the best horse I've ever ridden!" Attractive, good-natured and intelligent horse with "no issues" per trainer. He'll be a favorite in any barn. Price: $2,500 negotiable. Call Mark, 857-221-1703

Konstantin, feel free to PT me for more details, but all are very nice horses. Day Run and Zulu both looked very clean-legged when we took their listings. Zulu is owned by a great young kid who takes pride in keeping his horses in tip-top shape (he is the same owner who had Kelly's Concerto, who became very popular on this BB earlier this month!) Zulu seems exceptionally quiet for a stallion and his owner says he is fabulous to ride.
Mystery Water is adorable (a lot cuter than the picture, which was taken on the fly in the pouring rain) and has a great disposition. You should definitely talk to the vet who treated him about the hoof wall injury - I don't have the specifics on it, so can't say for sure how much time he'd need off, et. al. I'm happy to pass along the vet's contact information if you shoot me a PT.

War Admiral- Not that it will help you. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif But, if Jsalem ends up falling in love with Talk Subordination, I am also helping a friend purchase at least one, and she has already looked into transport. She has several quotes, ranging from pretty cheap for the 6 horse trailer (need more horses!!!) to so so for the 3 horse trailer. So the more horses going south, the better it is for everyone!!!
The shippers are great, we've used them before.
They live outside Atlanta, so anywhere more or less nearby works. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Look for gorgeous new pictures of our newest listings to be up hopefully by the end of the day.

Well, that's one...
I've been watching Abeam run. Unlike his photo, he is really lovely. Plus he goes to the post and into the gate in a calm and mannerly fashion. He just doesn't run very fast.
Lovely, lovely...

Abeam really needs to get off the track. It's starting to take its toll on him. You're right; he's stunning. Funnily enough, that's how we ended up taking his listing in the first place. I had noticed him in the post parade, and while we were listing another horse for his trainer, I asked him about Abeam, commenting that he'd caught my eye. His trainer said, "Actually, I'd like to sell him too"...voila!

We saw Big Bonus just today, in fact - he was walking calmly (and very soundly, I might add) out on the walking machine. I am not aware of any issues, and he has a very levelheaded disposition; but feel free to PT if you have any other questions. Today his trainer said he would take $1500 for Big Bonus.
As a reminder, we will be at the track from 8 AM-12 noon tomorrow, and every Saturday through Nov. 21 after that; and you can call the trainer of any horse you're interested in if you'd like to see the horse any other time.
If you are at all thinking of buying a Suffolk Downs OTTB, please, please act fast - trainers are already shipping out for the winter! Thank you.

Is there any general rule as to which track(s) most of them ship out *to*??
17handtb
Oct. 29, 2005, 12:00 PM
Some will go to local farms, others typically go to Beulah in Ohio or Tampa Bay Downs in FL. Some, the trainers do not want to pay to ship anywhere (those are the ones we worry about).

]What about Come To Pass? Does anyone know anything about him?
17handtb
Oct. 29, 2005, 02:30 PM
Come to Pass is a hunk! As a matter of fact, a buyer who was at Suffolk today was really impressed by him (he's on her long list to whittle down, so he is nowhere near sold yet). He jogged out beautifully. He is really handsome and is in great physical shape: good weight, dappled out, muscle in all the right places.
He will make all sorts of nasty faces at people, pin his ears and sometimes nip, but it's all a show; he never connects on the nips, never tries to kick, etc. His trainer said he really calms down away from the track. His price now is $2000. Please feel free to PT if you have any other questions.

17handtb
Oct. 29, 2005, 04:50 PM
Heading out the door so this will be quick, but: both are very cute. Nice dispositions - Dankee is a little more spirited but she is still a good girl.
Day of the Hunt, as his name suggests, seems very much a hunter type. Dankee is a TALL young filly and will be really stunning when she fills into her frame. I have not seen either jogged out, but neither has any visible problems - trainers state both are sound and have no issues except a distinct lack of high velocity on the track http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I visit this site daily also.I keep telling myself that I do not need another horse, but then again what can be better than giving a good comfortable home to a well deserving anomal?? So... Tell me about Monet's Choice and Talk Subordination...

I believe Buck and Wing has a few buyers already lined up and waiting for her to finish racing, but you can call her trainer and ask! Talk Subordination is sold (Doublete, correct me if I'm wrong). Monet's Choice's trainer hasn't decided if he wants to sell him or ship him to Florida and race him over the winter.
If you have questions about any other horses, please PT me, or better yet, make an appointment to come to Suffolk next Saturday - we'll still have plenty to show you!

Oct. 30, 2005, 11:36 AM
Update on our special sale weekend:
We had a decent turnout at Suffolk this weekend, although yesterday's rotten weather (freezing cold and SNOW in OCTOBER!) really hampered our efforts. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I am happy to report that the following horses have been sold:
992. Allondra (many thanks to Drew from COTH who, along with his girlfriend, made sure this mare <who has run more than 80 times> would be safe)
1045. Mass Pallet
1056. Suavefancynfast
1080. Brief Indulgence
1136. Sweetener
However, lots more are still available, and we took some new listings that are now up on the site.
I want to make a special plea for one horse on our listings who is absolutely miserable and really, really needs to find a home. His name is Ninety Second K O (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v134/17hands/NinetySecondKO.jpg), and he is a very cute, 15.2 hand 4-year-old chestnut with lots of chrome. He has no evident soundness issues - he's just in, frankly, very rough shape right now. His owner stiffed the trainer on the bills; trainer can barely afford to keep feeding the horse, let alone keep him in optimal condition. Poor Ninety Second is looking pretty ribby, dirty and has an unfortunate sore on his neck from a cribbing strap pulled too tight...so he is not looking his best, in any way, shape or form. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif
Ninety Second K O also is a ridgling (meaning one testicle never descended, but is still in the abdominal cavity), so he can be a bit studdish when mares are nearby, but for him, "studdish" seems to mean "talking a lot to the ladies!" He is a sweet and gentle boy with very good manners otherwise.
All the CANTER volunteers wholeheartedly agree that under that TLC-starved exterior is a really flashy, attractive and promising little horse who should be able to do just about anything, be it show or pleasure. Ninety Second K O's trainer had been asking $1000 for him, but now says "the first person who makes me an offer can have him." He can probably be purchased for $500. Please, if you have room in your barn and a need for a project who will require some elbow grease, kindness and weight, but will pay you back in spades - consider buying this little guy! His trainer, David, can be reached at 508-353-4357. Must sell soon.
OTHER HORSES WHOSE TRAINERS TOLD US "MUST SELL":
(#s correspond to their listing on our site)
1011. Abeam (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Abeam.JPG) - all reasonable offers considered
1017. Volcanic Hill (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/VolcanicHill.JPG) - $500 - trainer (who is a very honest guy) wants to emphasize that while he has some arthritis in his knees and is not a jumping prospect, this is a great horse to ride - even goes like a dream in just a halter and lead rope!
1036. Judith's Mission (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Judith%27sMission.JPG) - all reasonable offers considered
1054. Florida Forum (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/FloridaForum.JPG) - make an offer
1061. I'm Listening (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/I%27mListening.JPG) - make an offer
1065. Imagineering (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Imagineering.JPG) - make an offer
1069. Outta the Blue (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/OutOfTheBlue.JPG) - all reasonable offers considered
1104. Uno Passer (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/UnoPassa.rJPG.jpg) - $500 OBO
1108. Coyote Rose Bud - make a reasonable offer; must sell (can be seen on the farm south of Boston)
1113. Mystery Water (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Mystery%20Waternew.jpg) - will need some time for his hoof injury
1123. Star of Colleen L (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Star%20of%20Colleen%20L.jpg) - trainer emphasized she will not let anything bad happen to this mare, but wants to see her go to a good home as a broodmare/companion; will take even "a couple of hundred" as long as "it's the right kind of person"
1127. R D's Girl (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/RD%27s%20Girl.jpg) - this is a SWEET mare who not only has earned close to $90K herself; her mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother have all produced stakes-caliber horses. She is a beautifully bred mare with a lovely disposition. MAKE AN OFFER, must sell soon.
**Please PT me or e-mail canterne@canterusa.org if you would like more information about any of the horses on our site. Thank you so much.**

For all those that like the flaxen mane/tail on Buck & Wing, Mike Collins listed a little filly who is very cute and who has much the same coloring: Pitching the Dream
1125. Pitching the Dream, Chestnut mare, flaxen mane/tail, 15.2hH, 5 yo
The unusual coloring on this mare makes her quite the eye catcher! She needs to fill out a bit, but this girl would be striking in the show ring. Trainer says no soundness issues, just no talent. Price is $2500 negotiable. Contact Mike Collins at 508-345-4400
Check out her picture: http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehor...ng%20the%20Dream.jpg (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/Pitching%20the%20Dream.jpg)
She needs weight, but she would be really cute when muscled up and at her ideal weight. She also have a lovely, inquisitive expression--alert, but not spooky.

Off to the bank to wire $$$ for Talk Subordination!!!
Wish me luck. I'm buying her perhaps to breed in the spring, maybe not. Thought I'd see what she wants to do. I'll put her to work and see if she wants to be a show horse.
I'm very excited! For those of you considering one of these horses, doublete has made it very easy. She can be your "eyes and ears" and handles the vetting and shipping arrangements. Quite painless.
Thank you volunteers for your work. May God bless your efforts. These horses deserve a second career and new lives in loving homes. They don't deserve a sad end. Keep up the good work.

We just got some not entirely unexpected -- but still harrowing news: the TRF has told the trainer who coordinates loads out of Suffolk that they are not taking any more horses until further notice.
This is a real blow to us, as we find we are without any open foster homes, we have just taken on two mares who will need homes (Allondra and Sweetener) and we are looking at acquiring Ninety Second KO as well, unless someone steps forward to give him a good home in the interim.
I thank all of those who have helped by sending funds...As we have 10 horses in care, and potentially more coming, monetary support is vital.
For all who have the possibility of fostering a horse--I would beg you to consider opening your home and your heart to one of the animals that will be coming off of Suffolk between now and the 21st.
You can read more about fostering on this page: http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/foster.htm
For any of you who have been "mulling over" the possibility of buying a horse...please come look.
You cannot believe how nice, kind and athletic some of these animals are--though many may be in rough shape at the moment.
Ninety Second KO, aka "Corduroy" hung at the back of his stall for nearly 10 minutes before he would come to be patted by a volunteer--and he is all ribs...
Once he realized that it was a kind hand stretched out to caress his neck, he laid his head on the volunteers chest and audibly sighed with pleasure.
I want him to live. Help make that a possiblity.
Email if you have questions: canterne@canterusa.org...We will do whatever we can to find you a horse to fill your heart.
I come to you all humbly, knowing that you have already done so much...but I know that if you were each able to look deep in Corduroy's eyes you would forgive us our pleading.
(Ninety Second KO is far too impersonal a name for this brave little horse; I've renamed him Corduroy, as reminds me of the bear who loses a button, and so is ignored by most shoppers -- until a little girl finds him and brings all of the money in her piggy bank to the store to buy him. She sews on a new button and he is her happy and beloved companion, no matter his imperfections. My 3 year old daughter loves this book, and it reminds me of the all the horses "who've lost a button" who await homes at Suffolk.)
Bless you all for caring.

It may get to that point, Beastie; generally we do NOT adopt outside of New England...but we may have to consider bending the rules a bit for adoptions if we end up having too many horses and no place to go with them.
Oh--and MORE news: the owner of Tia Pan hasn't gotten any calls and has contacted us about donating him. We have no place to keep a stallion. This boy has phenomenal breeding (by perennial leading sire Gone West out of a Secretariat mare) and is really handsome; is there anyone out there looking for a stallion? Please let me know...

I am really interested in Imagineering. Can anyone tell me more about him? He is advertised as having racing jewelry, which is fine with me, but I would like to know some more about his temperment.
For those in S. Georgia I would also be interested in combining to save transport fees.

I also see on the site that So So Nice is up for sale...she was bred by the Ernst's at Foot Fall Farm. They sold Dillan to me! I remember that filly...I'm going to call JoAnn to let her know she's listed on the site.
I know one other person here who wants one. THat would be four coming to this area.
Can someone give me a realistic idea of the costs associated with obtaining one? ARe they current on Coggins/health certs?
I do have access to a four horse slant and a truck and because of my new freelance lifestyle, I could go up with a friend and get them. With gas prices, I'm not sure that's more economical than commercial transport.
Thoughts anyone?

I have actually already had been in contact about Corduroy. He's a bit problematic for me. Right now my herd is all gals and they would just love to be joined by a guy who thinks he has the equipment to keep them entertained http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I have the ability to put him in a seperate pasture, but noone to keep him company and no way to guarantee that he or my girls wouldn't do something stupid to get together.
As for getting together a carpool to the deep south.... I think it's a great idea! Right now I'm thinking hard about Precise Victor up at Finger Lakes (he's on the retiring sale pages), but maybe I can house two. There are soooo many who need good homes http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Imagineering ran today. He finished 8th of 9, way back after taking an extra bit of time to leave teh gate.
Others who ran today:
Nieges que te Amo- 3rd of 9
Chaffery- 6th of 9
Game BAg- 9th of 9
Arctic Sand- 1st of a bunch
There were probably fillies who ran today, but since I have a horse who is hormonally challenged, I don't even read about the girls.
You can go to Equibase.com and get entries to see if a horse you are interested in is running, and also to see how they did. Even better, if you identify one you want to watch, check out TVG.com to see if you can watch the race.

Hello all! Doublete will be going back to Suffolk tomorrow to buy more horses. I bet if you PM her she'll look for you! There's a truck that leaves in the wee hours of the night/morning wed/thurs. It will go through PA then straight to GA. I beleive there's room. If you wired money in the am a horse could make the truck. Or we could all make a truck at a slightly later date. I do know 2 shippers based in Atlanta that would run a private load. I believe the # on the current load is somewhere between $500-700. Other prices I've gotten are $575-1,000 depending on quantity. Feel free to PM me or email at info@mapleshadefarm.net
Chrissy- Imagineering made my short list . Katie says he's a fantastic mover! I have pictures. He's a cutie. If you want more info just email me at info@mapleshadefarm/net and I'll share what I know. I only have a second, as we are convening for an emergency meeting http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif to discuss the current situation but I wanted to make sure everyone understands that no such distance limitation exists for horses bought directly from the trainers. So far as I know (ladies, correct me if I'm wrong) Tia Pan and Corduroy have not yet officially transferred into CANTER ownership...
so if someone steps up SOON and buys these guys from the trainers (we can help facilitate!!) they can definitely be shipped down to GA

Stellar bloodlines--son of perennial top sire Gone West--and his looks reflect his royal lineage! Stallion prospect only, ankle problems mean no/minimal riding. He is a bit studdish, but would add much to any sporthorse program with his substance and athletic pedigree! Price: MAKE AN OFFER! Call Terry Murray, 401-783-1838

DillansMom:
Someone who called on So So Nice was told the owner has her leased out for the winter. As for transport, PT Doublete here, or e-mail her at doubletefarm@yahoo.com...she has hooked up with a great shipper who is moving Talk Subordination down to JSalem in GA; they may have room on that load. Also try calling Lorraine Horse Transport at 800-423-5935. They do weekly runs from Suffolk down to Ocala, FL and back and you should get a very good rate.
All of the horses at the track should have current Coggins - they're not supposed to be on track property without one. You would have to get a health cert from one of the track vets, but that is very easy to do. Once you purchase a horse, call the Suffolk Downs main # - 617-567-3900 - and ask to be connected to the vets' office.

Thanks for the responses.
I did talk to Jo Ann Ernst tonight, and she already knew about So So Nice. She did say that whoever buys her should contact her to hear the amazing story of her birth. She said it took two vets and four extra hands to bring her into this world...she was almost too big to be delivered! Her email is info@footfallfarm.com. I actually had the honor of helping her deliver a foal once and it was awesome!
MapleShade, I may have to make a later truck, as I don't know which one yet! I too liked Imagineering (although he's spoken for). I also like Abeam. Any info on him? And Mystery Water...what's up with his hooves? I don't mind one who needs some recovery time...

Hey guys-
I have a fever and feel like GARBAGE. So I'm not able to go through my notes on all the horses I looked at.
But I saw about 20ish horses yesterday, and am going back in the AM to finish up and put horses on the truck.
The trailer leaves for GA late in the day, AND if we get one more from Suffolk, the trailer will go straight down to GA instead of heading to Gettysburg (War Admiral *may* have one on there http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif and if so the truck will swing over to where he is and down to GA).
Since I'm somewhat delirious at the current moment, please call on my cell phone if you want pictures or comments on a horse. 617-817-7936 but I'll be truthful, if its not one in one of the barns I have to go to anyways, (which the number is very high, so odds are your horse will be there), I may say I can't if I still feel like this tomorrow. Feel free to call EARLY in the am.
I will help however I can, some of these guys need to go.
I also can give you some idea of the trainers you're dealing with, simply from my conversations the past few days. Most of them are now very familiar with me, and know I'm buying for different people, so are very willing to show me anything I want to see. There are several also for sale for more than $4K that are VERY nice. There is one that I can think of off the top of my head that is $7,500 and man is he nice. Big black gelding. And they showed me another one too, can't for the life of me remember details honestly.
Anyone considering wanting to help a horse... Please call me for why I plant these names in your head:
Uno Passer
Abeam
Judith's Mission
Von Bellinghausen
I'm Listening
These horses are on my "list" for my own reasons, but if you're interested, call me. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I will be at the track around 12:30 I believe. Am going to my bank around 8:30 to take care of cash matters for the shopping, so if anyone is interested enough to want to make sure money is wired to me for payment or to make sure things are in line, that would need to be done no later than 10:30 (I go past the last branch of my bank on the highway then).
If this doesn't make sense, I am sorry, but I do still have a fever. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif
And yes, we can set up a truck heading south after this too, so last chance for one more tomorrow http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif and then after that it may be a week or so till the next one.

FYI, Abeam's price is now $1500 "VERY negotiable" - trainer says call and make an offer. PT me if you'd like more info.
I should add that we do NOT know for a fact, nor are we trying to imply, that any or all of these horses are necessarily bound for the meat truck and/or auction. All we know is that their trainers have stressed to us that they MUST sell by the end of the meet.
And we do worry because Mr. Meat Guy has been making plenty of trips to and from Suffolk Downs. (where are the flat tire gods when you need them? Though I still like DressageGeek's "curse" best http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

I don't think Tia Pan is mean. He's just VERY high-spirited (he's also been sitting in a stall without doing much, which may account for a lot of it) and he is a stud who KNOWS he's a stud (unlike some at the track).

Also - Tia Pan, unfortunately, has very bad ankles, and is not going to be a riding prospect. He would be a LOFF-ly sporthorse sire, though.

Ace hated men (but he liked mehttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) and would try to chase them down to squash them with his front feet if they entered his paddock. Norcrest had a trailer and outdoor turnout that she mentioned in the 3 broodies thread of a few days ago. I think she's located in NY, so I don't know how realistic it is to approach her.
Are the shipping issues the type that could be helped with passing the hat?

I'm calling the trainer and the vet tomorrow about vet-check on Abeam. My friend is checking into Volcanic Hill. We won't be ready to transport for a few days...Not sure if Corduroy could catch a ride with our boys?
I wish he could stay at the farm where I am, but I'm afraid the cribbing might be an issue. The owner just had her heart broken by a cribber who could not be managed, and ended up not only completely destroying his stall (and he was only in it a short period each day, WITH a collar on), but wearing his teeth down to nothing and then having difficulty eating. She created a pasture for him with no wood, and he'd crib on t-posts. He went to live with someone who is very experienced with cribbers and who didn't mind trying to help him. So sad.
When is the first train to Georgia heading out? How many horses are there room for on that one? How many slots are filled? Please keep us informed, as this vetting/negotiating may go pretty quickly.

Even with $$ raised to ship him, Smilton isn't able to take Corduroy at this time (though we thank her for wanting to help him!) So he needs a foster or permanent home. Thanks to the wonderful Maple Shade, combined with all of your generous donations, we will have enough $$ to purchase him, but need a place to put him.
DillansMom, hooray re: Abeam and Volcanic Hill! Doublete's load is leaving tomorrow AM, but it may be possible to set up another one. Also, our great volunteer Don is willing to transport as far south as South Carolina in late November, as he is headed there anyway. And Lorraine Horse Transport always has vans going from Suffolk down the East Coast - I can call and get a rate from them if anyone is interested.
Thank you guys. We'll keep trying to figure something out for Corduroy!

Ok, finally home and awake again. It's 5:20 and I will be up until the truck leaves at 10 am.
So yes, the truck is not leaving until 10 am. There is space, one or two spots.
The vet (Dr. Patrick) that I have been using is aware that he is vetting horses for me ASAP in the morning. So if anyone wants to get on this load heading south, I can more than likely have him do it for you. Also, all of the trainers at this point know my number and know me, and trust that when I say the money is coming, it truly is coming. So what I'm saying is, if you REALLY REALLY REALLY want one of these guys and are unsure if you can get it done quickly, call me and I'll see if I can get it done for you. I've got my phone in front of me and will answer it. My land line is 207-426-3714 as well. Don't try to email me, cuz I might be watching a movie to stay awake.
Umm... Shipping to GA is $650. He'll drop off anywhere between Boston and Philadelphia (he has to drop a filly off in Philly and then is heading straight down to GA) and Philly and GA.
Simple vetting is $50 with Dr. Patrick (heart, lungs, eyes, flexions, his opinion on the horse).
The look your horse will give you when he gets off the trailer.... PRICELESS.
Yup, I'm a little delirious.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pick up the phone and contact me if you even want to attempt to make this work. I've gotten negotiable prices on most, if not all, of the horses I've looked at myself. And the trainers are all very willing to work with me. My shipper also knows that there may be another load heading south later this month, and he is very very willing to work with us on it.
I also have pictures on a lot of the horses that I took in the past two days, so I might be able to give those.
Oh, also got pictures of a lovely 16.2 h gelding today, limited starts, with a big ankle, needs time off. But he's lovely!!! $500.
I think there were a few others that don't have pictures up on Canter yet that I got pictures of too.
Moral of the story is, we have time to get this done before 10 am. And I'm staying up to try to get it all done.
Once this truck leaves though I am going to sleep for 4 days. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oh my oh my - we have crises aplenty in the midwest, trust me! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif This year, it was a little thing called the Paddock sale with over 100 horses entered. There are several right now on our trainer listings for under $1000, needing to SELL. We have CANTER owned horses needing to find adoptive homes, to make room for more. We are 4 hours from the IL Slaughter Plant, N. IL is about 45 minutes!
Our #1 "Needs to Go" right now is near the top of the listings, a filly named "Becka" - she's 3, over 16 hands and unraced! There are several others at $700-$800 NEGOTIABLE/MUST GO!
Depending on where in the midwest you are located there is PLENTY to be done. There are actually two CANTERs in IL - Northern & Southern. Northern IL right now needs volunteers to visit the track and take photos. I'm always looking for fostering/reduced board situations for Southern Illinois. And we all need MONEY all the time! Our problems usually aren't with the purchase price, but the ongoing care. I unfortunately often have to turn down trainers wanting to donate because we just don't have the funding to care for more horses right now. They eat alot, get wormed a lot, get x-rayed a lot, etc. (you get the picture!) We are trying to get our rescue efforts beefed up a bit, but funding is just too limited.
If you are serious about wanting to help, and will take assignments seriously, I'm certain I can find you more to do than you have hours in the week! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif keely@canterusa.org

I'm guessing no one is going to step forward and try to get a horse heading south on today's trailer.
It's too bad too.
Anyways, if anyone is serious about hearing about these horses and serious about helping them, please CALL me. I am getting overloaded with emails, and just can't answer them all, much less the ones about my own horses that I am training and caring for that I need to reply to. I can however speak to you on the phone and then narrow down what I need to send you via email.
I have pictures, and soundness info on quite a few.
Uno Passer is tearing at my heartstrings, so nightsong, if you want to try to figure something else, call me, you and I can put our heads together. Luis (the contact on it) is my friend, and he and I have been in contact about Uno Passer several times a day, as he knows that horse touched me because of the way he was.
I will not post publicly what I have seen in some of these horses because I don't want a public outcry against these trainers and owners. Some of them just do things that way, or think they are doing right, or just are too darn ingnorant. And by staying on their side and not getting in their face about everything they are doing being wrong, they tend to be a lot more flexible with me.

SOrry about the delay in getting boys here...we just wanted to check with vets to find out what issues the boys have before they come here. We are quite a distance from equine vets, and any of the boys that will need frequent visits might be better off in an area with better access.
That being said, should we take this to PM? Because my heart is set on one that needs to be rescued, and if Uno Passer is more urgent than Abeam, then let me proceed with him.

Depending on his age, it might still drop. I forgot his age.
If he is not studdish, you could keep him intact for a while until you find a permanent home for him. I recently had a five year old TB stallion with my geldings, he was sweeter then any of the "fixed" boys and would walk right by the mares in their stalls without taking a second look. As a matter of fact, one of the mares was in an adjoining paddock one day (her owner wasn't thinking when she put her in there!), in heat; SHE knocked down the top fence board to get to this stallion and he just walked away from her! LOL. Crushed that poor girls confidence.
But I am sure, the COTH members can pull together once again, if need be.

I am pleased to report, too, that the little mare Visible Song was also on the truck; she is going to PA to be a Mom. She was one that we have been worried about off-and-on since Northampton.
And Von Belllinghausen stepped off the trailer in the pitch black last night on arrival in his new CT home, walked into the barn, touched noses with his new neighbor and settled into his stall immediately...munching his hay as if he'd grown up there. He was a terrific performer on the track--six figure earnings--and I know that he will be a stellar boy after the finish line too.

Late to the thread, don't really know if I have anything at all to offer...but if needed
We do have an extra in/out stall with no door on it. We don't have extra money for Hay, I could supply grain. We are a bit muddy right now, ok a lot muddy. If in a desperate situation we could take a horse that is disease free and a mare or a gelding, no studs. Horse would be turned out with two mares. I do not have experience with TB's. Have had a horse though for 17 years. No charge for stall fee. This would only be available for a temporary situation. Could pick the horse up. Located in Southern NH.

As a reminder, in case anyone hasn't seen this page of listings on our site: several of the horses who were for sale at the Northampton Fair are still available. Many are at tracks other than Suffolk Downs (Come to Pass and Centcom are still at Suffolk), but you can still reach their trainers by phone - and some might be right in your backyard, if you're from the Mid-Atlantic area or the South:

Now I'm up. And I wanted everyone to know that even though I'm not going down there for the next few days, I will still do whatever I can for anyone. Just give me a call. And I do have pics of quite a few of the horses. (well, about 20 of them)

Hi everyone!
Maple Shade is having problems getting on COTH and asked me to share some updates:
-She and her dear friend Mary Jo can't wait to meet Corduroy. They have lots of plans for giving him all the attention, affection, and elbow grease he so badly needs, and Mary Jo is going to try to get the costs of his surgery donated. (send some jingles that that can happen!)
-She also wanted me to tell DillansMom and Chrissy, and any other southern COTHers who are potentially buying Suffolk horses, that she *may* be buying another 1 or 2 from Suffolk in the next couple of weeks. If so, she would want to get together with other COTHers on shipping. The shipper who is hauling Corduroy, Mass Pallet, Visible Song, King's Money, and Talk Subordination as we speak can come back to Suffolk Downs to do that shipment, and she has another shipper in Atlanta who is also very willing to do the haul.

Nov. 3, 2005, 09:16 PM
It's going to be close to the end of the week before I have everything orginized on my end so, if Imagineering is still available at that time, i'd be more than willing to work with other COTHers to trim shipping costs down. I'll post on this thread when I know something solid.
Congrats to those who have new additions on the way- i'm jealous!

Congratulations and good luck with everyone. Sorry everything happened so fast my mother called me from the hospital right before Doublete called with kidney stones which meant I am in charge of my 90 year old grandfather (very opinionatied insulin dependent diabetic sometimes better described as an onry SOB. Sorry-Old farmers do not make good patients), my real full time paying job, my horses, and his farm chores(only 15 horse, 30 cows, 25 dogs as the farm had was off this week). My husband is working long shifts the next two weeks and can't really help. She is still currently admitted because they can't get rid of them. I couldn't leave the area to pick up a horse or gaurantee care of another one at the moment. Couldn't explain it on the phone but I'm glad everything worked out and today is Friday. Good luck finding wonderful homes for the remaining horses.

No explanation needed, Smilton. It all worked out and we thank you for caring about Corduroy's plight. Best of luck with your family situation.
As a reminder, the CANTER NE volunteers will be at Suffolk every Saturday morning until the end of the month...if you can't make it on a Saturday, but are interested in a horse or horses on the site, by all means, call the trainer(s) and make an appointment to come another day! And you long-distance buyers who might be considering a Suffolk horse...we encourage you to take Doublete up on her generous offer to be your "eyes and ears."
She's very good at what she does. Please also send one of us a PT and we'll be glad to share with you what we know about a particular horse, and give you the information you need to set up a pre-purchase vet exam, et. al. Remember that another load heading down to GA is most likely to be in the works...always room for one more! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's Ellen...Hello COTH Angels! I just wanted to let everyone know that if you want to ask questions about any of the listings, have trouble reaching a trainer, want extra pics (if we have time, it may be a bit busy tomorrow), etc. You can feel free to call (781-354-6291) or email. I will be at the track tomorrow w/Laura and Dara.
While we have a lot of horses listed, we undoubtedly will have more turn up...so please also keep checking the site for "newbies".

They are here!!!!!!!!
That Eric sure is a character http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif!!
Corduroy looks just terrible. He's very wormy, very thin and has that nasty matted hair they get when they are in really bad shape. His legs are a mess too. Poor boy has poultice on his front legs and sweat on his back legs http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif It'll be interesting to see what they can accomplish over night! He's jammed up and sore everywhere. His neck looks just awful. In addition to being very thin, it's all wonky looking like he's been painful in his front end for a very long time. Of course his feet are a disaster too. One is all offset and crooked to the point that it must be killing his ankle. I don't think there's enough back foot to shoe ...he's barefoot back there and his feet are worn down to little nubbins. Poor Baby. It's amazing to think that someone would actually gallop this horse!!!! Eating, drinking and popping well though! He's very tired but happy and had big roll. He is THE SWEETEST thing ever! Accepts your love and attention even though he's a bit worried about being touched. He LOFFS beet pulp!! Yippee!
Eating his hay well too. I am having so much fun already! If anyone who reads this has never brought a horse back from this state you simpluy MUST try it!!!!!!!! It's so much fun and I swear I get more out of it than the horse http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Mass Pallet, now Pike, is big , solid and very impressive. neck to die for and a funky face with a bulgy forehead and huge ears. I LOVE this type but it's not for everyone. ...lol. King's Ransom, now Rob is a doll. Very cute and looks like he'll be super nice to ride. He's the alert but very unassuming type.
For anyone wanting to ship out next week- Eric is going straight from Suffolk to GA and leaving Wed. He's happy to make future trips too! I'm still hoping to need one or 2 more the week after.
Jsalem's mare is to die for!!!!!! The boys came off the truck and left her all alone. She stood there totally still and silent while the shipper chatted away for 20 minutes!. She is so sweet!

Whew!! She's all settled in.
Talk Subordination has officially started her new career. She is absolutely beautiful. I am happy to report that this horse has been beautifully cared for. She is in great weight, her feet are nicely trimmed and she is up to date on all vaccinations.
We unloaded in the dark at the end of my long drive. I had her taken to my house where I keep the retirees and youngsters. She unloaded off the ramp into my neighbors yard. We had to convince her to step down into the street. She was a little wobbly legged after her long trip and not enthusiastic about the new adventure. We finally convinced her to follow me down a little hill and I led her down the street and down my drive to the barn. She was quite a lady as my neighbor's horse started running down the fence line when he saw her. Marched right into her new stall and started munching hay.
I'll report tomorrow after she's turned out for the first time in ???.

Just a quickie update. My filly went out like a lady in her 2 acre pasture with a retiree as a buddy. No mad dashing around. She just went at a huge, slow extended trot up to the top of the field and looked around. She's very sound BTW.
I probably won't sit on her for a week or so. I'm just enjoying spoiling her and watching her right now.

Congratulations on your new girl, DillansMom - quite the pedigree she has! I bought my TB sight unseen, too - single BEST decision I have ever made.
And Jsalem, congratulations on your lovely girl. She was so calm when we saw her at the track, even with her stablemate jogging past her in the shedrow and every other horse in the barn hollering and jumping up and down. She was just meant to be in a show ring, not on a racetrack!
I'm pleased to report the following horses found good homes this weekend:
Joethehorse
Chaffery (Chaffery and Abeam, who are next-door neighbors at the track, will be going to their new home together!)
Be Wild
Abeam
Star of Colleen L has what appears to be a bad ankle fracture, possibly a re-fracture. But she will be OK - one of the trainers is working with Colleen's owner to find her a good retirement home as a pasture puff.
If the Eric doing the shipping is Eric Lado, who also has horses at Suffolk, you can call the Suffolk Downs main # - 617-567-3900 - ask for the stable gate and ask to have Eric paged, if you still can't reach him on his cell. Good luck all and thank you for your continued interest in these awesome horses.

Jsalem - a friend of mine bought a 3 year old gelding from Suffolk 2 years ago who was owned & trained by the same person who had Talk Subordination. The track vet doing the PPE told my friend about how wonderful this trainer is with his horses and that he's a good man to buy from. That horse vetted clean as a whistle, was calm, in-your-pocket friendly, and was obviously treated right at the track. He's on his way to becoming a very fancy eventer. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
When I saw Talk Subordination listed, her trainer immediately caught my eye and I was (to use Madeline's phrase) pimping her to anyone I knew, just because of the trainer. So glad to hear that you have her and she sounds so lovely!

Wow, just got finished messing with her this morning. She's had her ears and muzzle clipped, I lunged her for a few minutes in the ring to see what she'd do, I bathed her. She is so sweet and calm.

This is a really really really bad idea for me to come in here. Oh dear. Just walk away Reggie, walk away.
I basically adopted an aged thoroughbred mare, actually purchased her at a local sale this spring, a very down on her luck in poor condition mare, which I felt at the time was a bad bad idea but I absolutely think every day I see her it was the best idea I ever had. She has wonderful manners, no vices and her temperament has always been the best, very people friendly. She has evolved from a sad depressed thin dull coated mare into a fat happy mare.
She is now carrying a foal by a very fancy Oldenburg stallion and is a robust happy healthy mare with a beautiful shiny coat, totally different than the sad coathanger thin mare she was only 7 months ago, so anyone who takes on these off track horses who are herring bone thin can be sure that if you take them home and clean them up and feed them well, you will be amazed at what they can be in a short time.
I am sure the thin in training look has its purpose for the discipline, but at the time they are offered for sale, often they just look anhorexic to me.
I do hope these young animals are fortunate enough to find good homes and soon. Are any shippers building loads and making the trek to Florida? How many mares are left?
17handtb
Nov. 15, 2005, 09:19 PM
Oh, Reg, now that we have you here you know we will be MORE than happy to tell you about any and all Suffolk Downs mares that may catch your eye! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Yes, there are lots of mares still available - the track closes for the winter at the end of the month; trainers don't want to pay to ship their less competitive horses to other tracks - they want to sell them NOW and cut their losses. As the clock winds down, essentially all prices are very negotiable and trainers will consider all reasonable offers.
You can see the updated listings of Suffolk horses for sale at:
http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/index3.htm
(listings continue over the next 4 pages)
I know Maple Shade is planning on shipping 1, possibly 2 more horses down to GA in the next couple of weeks. In addition, Lorraine Horse Transport regularly makes runs from Suffolk Downs to Ocala, FL; I'm sure you could get a spot on one of those loads, should you find a horse.
Feel free to PT or e-mail canterne@canterusa.org if you'd like more information about a specific horse or horses. And thank you for caring about these guys, and for saving the life of your gorgeous mare!

There are some nice looking guys out there!
I bet the prices of all these horses will be very negotiable!
You wouldn't believe the prices OTTB's went for at the last auction here. Let's make sure the ones at Suffolk don't end up going through the sale ring too.

Too bad I'm acquiring #9...if I bought another horse hubby would kill me for sure, so I need to live vicariously through someone else. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif I also love the expression on Storm of the Year. Well on an enquiry level... and enquiry only ...LOL
Walk away Reggie, Walk away!!!!!
On a search basis...What is in the line up that would fit this description? Honest evaluation appreciated.
Mare...breeding sound...nice straight legs with good bone, elegant mover, long stride, suspension, no paddling or rotation in any of four legs)...attractive,...good temperament...good to be around... doesn't kick...doesn't bite...sociable with other horses... not looking for an alpha mare who wants to beat up on the rest...my group are a peaceful lot and prefer to keep it that way...not neurotic... no vices... no serious health problems...preference in movement would be uphill way of going, ground covering. Don't mind a higher action, as long as its flashy.
Preference in color...dark bay, or black, little to no white...but if other criteria is all there, color can be secondary. Don't need a herd, one would be plenty. Who best suits the formula and figuring costs of shipping, would fit my budget...ha... what budget???

My first thought is Florida Forum, she's an absolute sweetie and definitely not alpha mare material. Put together well and breeding sound. Very nice horse.
She's sound on an old ankle, it hasn't been bothering her even in race training - her trainer is just concerned that she'd get sore if she stays in race training.
Edited to add: check out Symmetry Slew and Dankee's Hanky also - both lovely mares

Check out Pyrite Gun. Neat pedigree for a sport horse mare. I recommend contacting doublete. She's invaluable for looking them over and judging movement, soundness, temperament, etc.

Slippery slope it is...lol...on this level its a bit like Ebay.
To make it more difficult to find the mare that might capture my interest.. type wise... I love the looks of Pop Tucker #1133...lol...and another I really like is #1075...Clever Brick. Both of these are pleasing in type, only problem is they are not mares. Whew! Safe so far!!!
Symmetry Slew looks to be nice bodied, and definitely the Seattle Slews are a strong line which I presume she is. Danlley's Hanky seems to have disappeared, didn't find her. Pyrite Gun, photo has her so twisted its hard to judge what she is like truly, so if the photo represents anything she is like a worm to handle, won't stand still.
Beauty is as beauty does.
Oh Doublette... are you there?

Florida Forum and Symmetry Slew are my top recommendations too. Both beautiful, very nice dispositions, and lots of old class in their pedigrees. (Dankee is gorgeous as well, but she's more of an alpha mare sort.)
It's hard to judge movement; we really don't see these horses move much when we take their listings, and when they're all just coming off a long, taxing racing career, they are not necessarily showcasing their inherent quality of movement. I second the advice to have Doublete go eyeball the horses you're interested in for you; she knows how to look beyond track soreness/injuries for the "horse beneath," so to speak.

From some of the shots, its pretty hard to imagine what they are really like. These two as they appear in photo are the style of horse that I would take an interest in if it were a mare.

Reg, I think Symmetry Slew may be the type of mare you like, if Clever Brick appealed to you - they have a lot of similarities in type. If you get in touch with Doublete, she can look at SS for you, perhaps on Saturday, as I believe she's coming to the track then.
Reg Corkum
Nov. 16, 2005, 09:05 AM
I think SS is quite like the mare I have here in the field actually. She perhaps is not the flashiest bit of gold in the pan, but she is not looking weak in any particular areas and that is a good thing. Slew bred horses are generally pretty all around solid horses. If she is not like a horrid mover and the price is decent, I might splurge...Shut up Reggie!!!

17handtb
Nov. 16, 2005, 10:03 AM
We just met him on Saturday, 2Traks. He is very nice-looking and seems to have a good, quiet disposition; his trainer pulled him off the walking machine for us to take his picture and he didn't make any fuss. I spoke to the trainer about him yesterday - she is someone who does a lot to help horses at the track (she's the TRF liaison for Suffolk Downs) and has always been upfront with us when we ask her for the "lowdown."
She said that Off the Chain has had no issues in the time she's had him in her barn: knees and ankles cold, legs tight, no lameness, etc. She said anyone is welcome to get him vetted; she doesn't think he'll have any problems passing.
She's trying to get stalls at another racetrack for the winter, has no room to take OTC with her when she goes, and will take $500 OBO just to find him a good spot before she has to leave Suffolk.

17handtb,
Do you know when she's leaving? I want to give someone a chance to snatch him up (as I need another young horse like a hole in the head,) but if someone doesn't before she goes I'll figure out a way to get him.

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I know that lovely "hole in the head" feeling! I'm not sure exactly when she's leaving - the last day of racing is next week, and trainers usually start shipping out within a week afterwards. She is desperate to sell him ASAP. Just out of curiousity I pulled Pyrite Gun's pedigree on Equineline and she is by a good Florida stallion, Formal Dinner, and out of a stakes winning mare! Lots of black type in her pedigree and she herself earned over $30K at the track.

Talk to me about Palmetto Moon. What would they take for her?
Ad reads...."1154. Palmetto Moon, Dark bay/near black mare, 16.2 hands, 9 years old
WOW - this big, stunning mare just may be the steal of the year! Tall,
beautiful and clean-legged, she's also so kind and level-headed that her
trainer can take her in and out of her stall in just a halter. Palmetto
has been a broodmare for the last few years, but is sound enough to
retrain in any discipline. She is a naturally collected mover with a
smooth, floating trot and is willing to do anything you ask her to.
Price: $1500 negotiable. Call Henry, 603-568-8804"
like to know a bit her breeding history... easy to get in foal? easy to foal out? Types of foals she has produced? good mother? any vices?

Pyrite Gun is really nice and should be available for short money - her owner wants to sell all of his horses before winter.
Reg, that's one beautiful mare - her picture doesn't even come close to showing how gorgeous she is. She's clean-legged, lovely mover, and you can't ask for a better disposition. Henry is a great guy, super honest and his primary concern is a good home. Call him - he'll tell you all you want to know, and you can discuss price with him as well.

My inner voice..."can't stand you! You're telling me things I want to hear!!!!"
I spoke with Henry, got an estimate on shipping her. I made him an offer. He is stewing on it. He noted my address and is going to talk with the shipper about door to door delivery. She has had three foals, the last one had some health problems and didn't survive, she is open this year, He has her three yr old and two yr old, both fillies, and he is keeping them. She is apparantly very kind and uncomplicated. Legs are good, she has nice feet and good bone. The only thing she needs done is her teeth and he said he would get them done before shipping. Up to date on all shots, no health problems. I also like the fact that this mare has been off track a while so she is already acclimatized to farm life and is very sociable. This sounds good for my needs at the moment.
He will call me in the morning around 10 and we will see what the verdict is. I understand he is looking to get what he can for her, and I respect that. If you see Henry, put in a good word please. She will not go hungry here that I can assure you. He is hoping she will go as a brood mare. I think that is in my favor. I also like the fact that she is presently open so I can breed her when I want. She apparantly has caught on first cycle each time bred, very easy and a good mother.
I knew I shouldn't have come in here. Oh well, maybe Henry will be nice and say "No!"

We have heard those rumors too, but they have not been confirmed to us - and if it ever did happen, it has not occurred since CANTER New England has existed (2002). Our greater concern is the risk of horses going to auction if not sold.
Orangemare, these might be good prospects for you: (#s correspond to their listings on our site, starting at http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/index3.htm)

Of course, for an eventing prospect, we strongly recommend (as we do to all buyers) you get a pre-purchase vet exam on any horse you're seriously considering. If you find a horse or horses you like, we can help put you in touch with one of the track vets to arrange for the exam. Thank you for wanting to give a home to one of these guys!

A few updates from this evening - starting with one very sad one:
CANTERNewEngland (Ellen) went to the track tonight to meet a foster mom who was supposed to be picking up the little 8-year-old mare, No Inclusions - a horse who was supposed to be donated to us. However, upon arriving at Suffolk, the foster caretaker was instead told by the trainer that he had sold the mare to the kill buyer for $200 today. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif She is likely on her way to New Holland right now - if anyone wants to offer a home to a very nice, deserving horse, please let us know! She is 8 years old, very kind, and although she is in dire need of a farrier visit and she has one slightly enlarged knee from a babyhood accident, she is believed to be sound for pleasure riding. We do not have the money to buy her and ship her back to New England, but if you can offer her a home, we can work on finding someone to bid on her at New Holland and save her life.
Here is her photo:
No Inclusions (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/NoInclusions.jpg)
Also, on a much happier note, I am pleased to announce that Off the Chain is now a CANTER New England-owned horse. His foster mom fell in love at first sight and it may be hard to snatch him away from her http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif, but he is available for adoption now. Please contact us at canterne@canterusa.org if you are interested.
And thirdly, the trainer of Evening Puzzles (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehorses/EveningPuzzle.jpg), 6-year-old, 15.2 hand chestnut gelding, #1122 in our listings, told CANTERNewEngland a little more about him tonight - he sounds like a really great horse for someone a bit more experienced (he is NOT mean, but has a lot of energy and is very much a "let's get up and go to work!" kind of horse). He's been hacked out in the field, is really brave and willing under saddle, and has no soundness issues. Trainer is asking $750 OBO - if interested, call Jennifer at 727-643-7498 - he's worth a second look!
