My younger brother is getting married the day before Labor Day. I'm not in the wedding (thankfully!) but will obviously need to buy a new dress for the occasion.

Not being a girly-girl at all, I'm kind of at a loss.

My brother is 42 so that makes me, uh, older. ;) So I would like a dress that's flattering (I'm pear shaped) but I don't want to try to look 20-something.

The bridesmaids are wearing eggplant colored dresses and this is a 4PM wedding if that helps.

Where to start looking and any suggestions on color/style?

Do you know what length the 'maids are wearing? Is it going to be an event where a cocktail length dress is perfect, or are you going to need something longer?

Generally anything A shaped or Empire waisted is very figure flattering. What are your fave colors?

I believe the bridesmaids dresses are 3/4 length. Does that help dictate the proper length of the guests' dresses? See why I need help! :)

I love the color blue and it does flatter my blue eyes.

Hmmmmm, I think if the girls are in a deep color, maybe a sapphire blue? Navy has been a really popular color recently, and is like black, very slimming. Let me go look. How tall are you and what $$$ would you like to stay under?

I have one word for you: A-line. I also have proportionately larger hips (and larger bust) for my size. I've found it's a flattering look to hide my hips, especially if the top of the dress fits my bust (my typical challenge). Dresses that are too form-fitting (pencil skirts, shift dresses) make my rear look huge. Conversely, ones with no shape (loose flowy things, boxy cuts) are unattractive as well.

I wouldn't stress too much about finding "The Perfect Dress." I have been in weddings for both of my sisters in the last 2 years, and honestly, I was so busy with the photos, the ceremony, the toasts etc that I don't remember what any of the guests, even close family not in the wedding party, were wearing. Well, except for one aunt who wore head-to-toe red:rolleyes:. Just don't be that relative;), and you'll be fine.

I'm 5'7" and would like to stay around $100 or so if that's a reasonable expectation.

So I received a catalog in the mail from a company I've never ordered from. It just happened to have dresses! Would something like this be appropriate in blue?

Also this wedding is in Estes Park in Colorado so it will be be warmish to start and then get quite cool later on.

Ha! I think I'd look like a tomato in head to toe red!

I'm not full busted (small B cup) and totally agree about pencil skirts.

Maybe this one? With a wrap or cute little sweater for later? I'm about 2 hours from Estes, it will be unbelievably gorgeous higher up with the aspen changing! If you can stay , the Long's Peak Sottish Irish Festival kicks off the following THursday!

That's cute! I wonder if they sell it at the Macy's stores so I can try it on.

The wedding and reception will be at St Mary's Lodge which looks very nice from the pictures. We're heading up the Friday before and staying til Monday. Really looking forward to it and I'm so happy for my brother. He's waited a long time to find the right one.

Love this and you would probably get more use out of it later! Very flattering, and comfortable, but the skirt makes it so cute for day to evening

I got a great dress for a family wedding at Neiman Marcus Last Call - $1000 dress for $100! Unfortunately, the really good deals are in the actual stores, not on the website. A shawl or cashmere shrug would be nice for the evening.

If you are looking for sapphire blue...
HUNT DOWN every TJMaxx/Marshalls you can think of... and Calvin Klein makes amazing dresses in that color!
CHEAP too... I believe for $60 you can find a dress. Always conservative and classy.
I usually have to have them taken in in random areas but with that price tag- I can afford to!
Good luck and have fun at the wedding!

Agree. Love the simplicity, versatility, elegance, and it also strikes me as the kind of dress you could have a lot of fun accessorizing if you wanted. I think the simple design of the dress, solid color and three-quarter sleeve cries out for a "statement" bangle of some kind. Have fun!

Pretty! It would probably balance out my smallish top to my largish bottom. ;) I wonder if the skirt is just a little short.

Next question - What color shoes? I don't think I want to match the dress color. If I go with that blue Chadwick's dress, would silver or grey shoes work, especially if I add silver jewelry/bangles?

Can't go wrong with a silver shoe- but not a "big" silver shoe.. something with small-ish straps that is elegant

the chunkier heel on this one is appealing vs. the narrow heel

Overstock.com is my go-to. Here are some choices I found, after a very cursory search:

http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/Scarlett-Womens-Buckle-Ruche-Waist-Dress/6284241/product.html

http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/London-Times-Womens-Mood-Indigo-Ruffle-Ruche-Dress/5870297/product.html

You'd need a little shrug or cardigan for later, but I LOVE this one, in either color:

http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/Sandra-Darren-Womens-Sleeveless-Tiered-Ruffle-Satin-Dress/6099424/product.html

This one is REALLY different, but solves your problem with the jacket;

http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/SL-Fashions-Womens-Bolero-Jacket-Tiered-Dress-Set/6442500/product.html

LOVE this one, too:

http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/R-M-Richards-Womens-Crepe-Beaded-Jacket-Dress/6275621/product.html

What I love about Overstock is that everything is always $2.95 to ship. Shipping back - yeah, you pay for it, but what the heck - still easier than rushing from store to store searching for what you want. ;)

You could also do what is super-popular right now for lengthening your leg and go with a flesh-tone pump. I love strappy sandals/heels, but you have to have thin legs and feet to pull them off. The flesh-tone pumps lengthen your leg, but also don't have enough interest to hold an observers eye for too long (if you have heavy lower legs (me) or any flaws down there, and their interest will draw back up to your face and any nice jewelry you decide to accessorize with.

Luckily I have slenderish calves, though I'll need a pedicure before exposing my feet to the world. I agree that those flesh colored pumps are very flattering.

I bought a dress!

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/j-kara-v-neck-sequin-bodice-dress/3297036?origin=keywordsearch&fashionColor=&resultback=193

It's more blue than it looks in the picture.

So now, wise COTHers, what shoes, accessories and hairdo style go with this dress?

FlightCheck

well done.

Silver flats? Minimal jewelry, to let the dress make the statement.

Nice!

No jewlery (except maybe some cool silver earrings), silver or black strappy heels or pumps. I don't like how the model has her hair down, it interferes with the construction at the top of the dress. Maybe a loose updo? Messy bun at the nape of your neck, curl a few pieces and let them hang down by your ears?

rosijet

I agree on the minimal jewelry. Maybe a silver bangle and simple earrings.

I like the idea of a loose up-do too. My hair is just past the shoulders so that should work.
