View Full Version : Finger Lakes First Annual End of Meet Retiring Race Horse Sale
Louise
Oct. 6, 2005, 09:10 AM
This year, on November 12 & 13, The Exceller Fund and the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program will be holding their First Annual End of Meet Retiring Race Horse Sale. Volunteers from both organizations will be available to walk buyers through the backside of the Finger Lakes Race Track, to look at horses that owners and trainers have available to transition to a second career.
If you check The Exceller Fund site here (http://www.excellerfund.org/) you will find information regarding the sale, and, shortly, a special bulletin board for those horses who will be available at the sale. Right now the link still leads to the regular BB, but that will change. We're still in the very early stages of the BB work, so keep checking often, as listings will be added to and updated on a regular basis.
We are very proud, excited and just a little scared about being able to do this for the wonderful horses at Finger Lakes. I know that all of you who have so graciously supported our efforts this year will continue to do so, and I hope that many more of you will find it in your hearts to find a place for these gentle, giving creatures who all so deserve a special person to love them.
So, spread the word to everyone you know - your perfect horse may be waiting for you at a small track in Upstate New York.

Regent Lion,
Yes, the horses listed on the current Exceller BB are available for private sale right now and until they are sold, so go ahead and pick your pony and make that offer!

The horses available at the end of the meet sale will all be private sale also. The volunteers will be there to escort buyers around the backside. Sales will be strictly between trainers/owners and buyers.
Turkish Tiger, please come up, I'd love to meet you. And, of course, I'm sure we can find the perfect companion for Affirmed Emotion! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I wouldn't be able to make it out there for the sale, but I'm really intrigued by the site... only problem is transport.
I have a pony mare who has gone on to teaching kids to ride at her insistence- once I let her start teaching lessons she made it clear that she loves kids and wants to spend as much time with them as possible, so now she's half-leased to a little girl and teaching beginner lessons the other three days. Thus, I need something a little bigger and younger for myself. I was thinking TB, and they look really nice.
Only problem is transport. I called about getting a quote at a couple places and haven't heard back yet...
Louise

That is great news that you are interested in the Finger Lakes horses, HPL! As far as transportation goes, I have a couple of suggestions.
1. Be sure to check our transportation forum here (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=transport&action=display&thread=1124853308) . While I don't know if the smaller haulers will go as far as Colorado, some of the other ones may be able to help you. Mention that you are interested in shipping a horse that you will be buying as a result of seeing it on the Exceller BB. Sometimes that will get you a discount, sometimes it won't, but it's worth a shot.
2. See if you can find some other people in your area who might be interested in a horse from Finger Lakes. If you can get a group coming out, you might very well get a cheaper rate.
There are so many nice horses on the Bulletin Board right now. I hope that you can find just the right one. If I can help in any way, just let me know.

Ooohhh I was checking out some of the listings and noticed that several beasties (including Antique Freak and some other nice girls) have moved to the FL sale. That is entirely too close to me http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

FL stands for Finger Lakes. But, BeastieSlave, there are plenty of transportation companies that can drive right by your back door (and stop and unload your new best friend). http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Deb14 thanks for giving your trainer info on the sale. Sure you can afford one - I just counted and there are 19 horses listed for $1000 and under right now
, with many of those at $600 negotiable.

Thanks, Louise! Actually, maybe you can help by giving me a name of a veterinarian in the area whom I can rely on for a prepurchase exam, since I'd be buying a horse sight unseen. Of course I'll need to get ahold of one of the shipping companies and get a quote before I can even do a prepurchase (and that'd mean choosing between all those horses... sigh... why can't I win the lottery?), but it'd be nice to have a reference if/when it seems feasible.

Oh dear, I'm sorry, but Buddy Puddy has been placed. Thanks for pointing out that he is still on one of the two "active" boards. I have sent a message asking that he be placed in the archives.
Everyone keep your eyes on the board today. We didn't go on Saturday, as it was pouring rain. We went yesterday, and, truthfully, it wasn't much better. Every picture I took has rain spots on it. But, we have a lot of lovely new horses that should be going up today, sometime.

Western Cruzer and Signal Red are both trainer/owner horses, and both absolutely wonderful in person. I was very taken with Signal Red, she has a tremendous dignity about her.
Antique Freak is a favorite of mine. She is a sweetie pie, through and through. She's generated a lot of interest, and I really wish someone would take her home.
I can't tell you much about Matter of Fax, as he was not listed by the Louise/cgn38 team. Your best bet would be to get in touch with the contact on the post. He certainly looks like a pretty boy.

Who do we think is more at risk, Ditti or Hey Mr. Brass Man? I'm worried about HMBM, because he might have had EPM and his price is only $600. At least Ditti is a mare (sad but true, she has possibly more of a chance because she has a uterus).
BTW, I think it's really spelled Ditty, as there is a 2000 mare by Hot Cop-Serenade In Red in the Equine Line.
Edited to ask: Louise, are we sure that Hey Mr. Brass Man's name is correct? Couldn't find him on Equine Line, nor anything close to it in the Online Names Book. There's a Hey Mr Banjo, Hey Mr Big, and a Mr Brass n Class.
Edited again to add that his proper name is Hay Mr. Brassman, by Dixie Brass out of Straight Jacket (CHI)

Thanks for the corrections, Sing Mia Song. We're most often doing these listings without papers and I'm sure that there are a few out there that are not quite right. I'll email and make sure that these two are fixed tonight.

Louise and other Canter ppl from NE:
Here's a question I'm not sure how to ask.... It seems as though whenever a poster asks about a horse, we are told it is really nice.... are they ALL nice, or are we just picking the good ones... in otherwords, would you tell us if we were looking at a snarky one, or one w/poor conformation? I assume yes, but was just wondering..... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
17handtb
Oct. 13, 2005, 09:19 AM
Good question, Regent. I think I can speak for the Finger Lakes crew, as well as CANTER NE and the other CANTER folks, in saying we will NOT *ever* lie or misrepresent anything we know about a horse. They all have their good points, and we'll obviously be thrilled to share those with you, because we love these horses!
"Poor conformation" can sometimes be in the eye of the beholder. (and a horse can look a heck of a lot different with some weight and muscle development, too - heck, a horse can look a lot different in person than in the picture taken in the rain, with flies bothering the horse, with a groom not really paying attention...you get the idea). So can degrees of "hotness," optimal movement, and so on. What's ugly to someone can be beautiful to someone else; what's "bratty" to one buyer can be desirably "on his toes" to another, etc.
We are not vets (insert standard CANTER reminder: we always recommend a vet check!) and we are not official representatives for these horses, so we won't tell you what you SHOULD be looking for and what you SHOULD be buying. Our purpose is to introduce these horses to potential buyers. We are not involved in the actual decision-making process about which horse you should buy, and we try to stay impartial and let *you* make that crucial decision. We all have our favorite horses, sure, but we're not the ones buying, and we always strive never to push one horse over another.
However, if we know something particular about a soundness issue, temperament problem, etc., we absolutely will tell you about it. That's why we ask people to please PT us if you have questions about a specific horse.
(Not that you should assume a response of "PT me" means the horse has anything wrong with him or her! I like to answer questions about individual horses, whether I have good or not so good things to report about them, in PTs, so I don't feel like I'm monopolizing an entire thread discussing a single horse.)
Louise
Oct. 13, 2005, 09:48 AM
That's a good question, RegentLion. I can only give you an answer from a "me" point of view.
Since I started this, I have been amazed at the quality of horse I am seeing at Finger Lakes. Most of them are handsome animals, with more than a few being drop dead gorgeous. That being said, I am the first to admit that I am not a conformation expert. I tend to look a horse as a whole, not as a sum of its parts. Ask me about the slope of a shoulder, length of pastern or angle of hip, and I'm not likely to be able to give you a technically correct answer. My answer is usally that the horse "looks" right. And, sometimes looks don't even tell the story. In my personal experience, one of the most plug ugly horses I ever saw in my life had three good gaits and a total "I can do this attitude."
Temperment is a trickier thing. We see these horses for maybe five minutes. It is often very hard to get a really good idea of a horse's temperment in that short a time. We get a feel for how easy they are to lead, and how well they stand still for a picture. That is another area where I, as a newby around the track, have been really surprised at how mannerly most of these horses are. They are young, they are incredibly fit and they are fed large amounts of high energy foods, yet you see very little in the way of misbehaving.
So, as far as my impression goes, I'm telling the truth when I say that I think that the horse is nice. Its the way that I honestly feel, but I'm alway willing to admit that a more experienced horseperson than myself might find many more faults with a horse than I do. I hope that answers your questions.
**edited to say that I like 17handtb's answer better.

I think most racehorses have pretty decent behavior, for the most part better than a home-raised horse who has been doted on and spoiled.

Thanks 17handtb and Louise. I was very afraid that the question would come off wrong or inflamatory.
I'm the same way as you, Louise, about conformation. I think a horse "looks right" or doesn't look right.... Although I can see glaring faults. People can, of course, point out a too sloping shoulder, neck tied in wrong, etc., and then i'll see it, but I hardly ever see the finer points myself. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif
I'm glad to hear that you guys do give honest opinions, although truthfully I didn't doubt it... I figured that if there was some big issue you'd disclose it, while highlighting the good points!
And of course, temperment/willingness can compensate for many "faults," and beauty is DEFINATELY in the eye of the beholder.
I'd like to add too, a note of thanks to you guys and the CANTER people who helped me last October around this time make the decision to travel out to Boston to pick up an OTTB mare who I just Love! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif I need to get some pics of her to share! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I can tell you that Louise has a better eye than she's admitting to! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The FL horse that my friend bought and that was briefly in my barn before moving on to begin her life as a broodmare was nicely put together and had nice manners -- she was everything that the trainer and Louise had said/thought she would be.
I, too, have been a bit surprised at the overall niceness of the horses that I've seen on the FL Exceller Fund site. There must be a good track farrier in the area, because while some have feet that aren't perfect, I've been surprised at how good many of their feet look.
Something that Twisty's trainer told me upfront and very willingly -- the track at FL can be really hard. If they have been racing there and have stayed sound, there is a good chance that they'll stay sound for what we would want to use them for -- on the other side of that, I would think that the fact that one of them had a problem crop up wouldn't mean that they couldn't stay sound as a sporthorse. The trainer was very definite about how tough the track was on the horses. Interesting.
In any event -- good for you guys that are shopping!! I've not gone and looked since I'm full now, but it is hard not to . . . http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Just to add to what Bensmom brought up, today I was told that the track had been added to and somewhat reconditioned this summer, so that it is not so hard. I have acquired four older geldings from FL over the years who all had many starts, and I second the notion that if they have held up to a racing career, then they are some tough horseys. There will be about 8 new listings in the next day or two. Thanks for your support of the Finger Lakes horses.

After looking at the latest listings I feel the need to give this a bump.
There are several good looking beasties listed for really low prices. It's a good thing I'm not closer or I would be divorced and in the poor house with lots of OTTB's.
Now, in addition to hoping Go See Michelle (what a kind eye!) finds a good home, I have to watch Miners Road, Kingsboro Sword, Sage Field, and my new fav. guy - Hide Song.

Beastie Slave - I am right there with you in watching Hide Song, and especially Kingsboro Sword and Miners Road. Louise, that is NOT help!!
(Un)fortunately, I'm ahead of you.... Sallee doesn't go to Finger Lakes and I already have a price from Blue Chip. I love Maggie, but OUCH! the cost of shipping is really reflecting those fuel costs. I think I'll try to stop there and just encourage others to buy. We'll see how that goes http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So I'm curious BeastieSlave, just how much is shipping running these days? I have heard anything from under $1/loaded mile up to $2.50/loaded mile on other bbs.
I'm very happy to see that Distinctive Cal has been placed - he sure looked like a cutie in his pics

Oh, Beastieslave!
Aren't you right off of I-75?
The shipper that brought Twisty down passes right through your neighborhood and he brought her for almost half what you were quoted and kept her overnight at his place in Citra. He runs between FL and Florida every two weeks or so!
His price has probably gone up with rising diesel prices, but he is running the trip with trailer anyway, so can afford to be more competitive. He is listed on the contact page that Louise gave you.
He will also go 100 or so miles off of his route if it helps people . . . http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif Great guy, beautiful farm in Florida . . . http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Darnthefrost is listed on the site - he's out of a Darn That Alarm mare. It's worth remembering one of the better steeplechasers out there was Darntipalarm. Two guesses as to who HE is by... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Plus, in the land of "It's a Small World", his damline great grandsire (?) is Assagi Jr. I handled Assagai Jr. in his breeding career (he was owned by Johnny Sessa, but stood at Ralph Sessa's farm). Assagai was a very atheltic, old style TB who wa as tough as nails. He was also the most mannerly horse around.
Last but not least, I noticed his grandsire was Copelan. Which of course gives you broodmare royalty - Susan's Girl, first filly to win over a million and toughed it out for 63 starts.

Sadly I really can't take on this kind of horse any more, too old/crippled, but if I *were* looking, I'd be looking pretty hard at Big Time Flyer. Nice confo, sounds like he has the *right* kind of TB-tude, has In Reality very close up, should be both physically and mentally mature at 9...

Heehee, thank you. One thing that might help y'all move this horse could be swapping the pics - put the one presently on the bottom up on the top. In the top one, he looks built way downhill but it's b/c his butt is hanging up there on the concrete! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

All I can say is once you've *tried* it with a really good sound older OTTB, you'll notice the huge mental/intellectual difference and you will NEVER go back to 3 y/os unless someone's holding a gun to your head! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Wow, I really hope that his age isn't the reason. A sound OTTB at 9yo is a horse I'd want to have. In fact, if I had room, I'd be coming to get him! He's beautiful and his legs look clean, from what I can see.
Much like the OTTB I got from CANTER NE last year. She was 7 or 8yo and sound, just decided not to race anymore. She's been mellow with a been there done that sort of attitude about everything and just the fastest learner. She's had a 14yo re-training her with help from the ground. I HIGHLY recommend these older OTTBs.

I was wonering that too today, Pokabout. Who has done this? Do you just vet the horse over the phone and have the current trainer load 'em up with the shipper? Do you have to arrange for someone to purachase halter/wraps/head bumper/etc for the trip - or will the trainer usually send those along with the horse? Just curious. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
BeastieSlave
Oct. 20, 2005, 05:10 PM
Alright, I'll take a stab at it...
They have a vet listed on the Exceller site for the FL track. I bet the volunteers at all the tracks are familiar with the vets in the area and can offer advice. If you just need a health certificate, I'm sure the trainer would be happy to coordinate that.
It's easy to wire $ for payment, and I bet the trainer or a lovely volunteer would be happy to get the horse packed onto the truck or trailer that'll be taking it to its new home.
Most commercial hauling companies prefer for the horses not to be wrapped for long trips and most horses also come with halters. (around here I believe it's the law) I would think that if you wanted the horse to wear a bumper you would send one or pay for one.
When I got a filly through a TB rescue a few years ago, they did everything. All I did was meet the truck. She just magically got on the truck with her halter, health cert. and other papers, and found her way to GA http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Seriously, the volunteers for these groups are amazing! I got the feeling that they were happy to do whatever they could to send a horse on to a good home.

Pokabout -- I'm not a mare person -- I know that isn't fair, and is discriminatory, but there you are.
Even with that in mind, Sordid Affair almost made me change my mind! She's beautiful -- I fell in love with her the first time she was listed, back in June, I think? Anyway, keep looking http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I can help with some of your questions, I think.
My friend talked extensively with Twisty's trainer in the four days or so it took her to make up her mind. She chose not to vet her, but that is obviously a personal choice -- it can easily be done, if you wanted to do it. As a matter of fact, I spoke with the track vet at one point on another horse and liked her very much.
My friend sent a cashier's check and the trainer wrapped her for the trip, and sent her with her halter, halter fuzzies, her blanket, her tin of peppermints, a win photo, a letter from her daughter, a list of what she ate, when her vaccinations had been done, her Coggins, her health certificate, and her papers. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Her wraps went back with the shipper -- the guy we used was a friend of the trainer, and he is the one that makes the regular run back and forth to FL/Florida every two weeks and so he just returned her wraps, as I had a fresh set ready to bring her home.
It really was an easy thing to set up, and between talking with the EF volunteers and the trainer, I felt like I already knew the horse by the time she got here! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif
The trainer called me five times the day she was supposed to arrive. At least. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif She was really worried about sending her so far away, but she did fine.
I had always worried about trying something like this because of the distance, but I can tell you I'd do it again in a heartbeat. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif In fact, the only thing I'd change is that I would make sure my friend was *really* ready to jump into multiple horse ownership before she did this. It has worked out ok, as she's now got a great home with someone that was desperate to get her as a broodmare prospect, but it could have gone not so well once my friend decided she didn't want horses any more after all. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I really wasn't prepared for *that* development!!
But, personally, if I had the funds, Miner's Road and Big Time Flyer would already be heading to Florida!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, it had to be one of the most miserable days, weatherwise, that we have spent there. It was raining and maybe in the high 40's, or low 50's. That meant trainers were doing their jobs, and then getting out as soon as they could.
We did get pictures of some very nice horses, however, a couple of gorgeous geldings, a big mare who looks like a warmblood, and a teeny tiny mare who could be a pony but is as cute as a bug, whatever height she is.
The new descriptions are going up right now.

Why, Instant Karma, join right in on the Exceller Fund BB, for listing retiring race horses from the Finger Lakes track right here. (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi#general)
There are currently two boards up. One is for horses at the track that will be included in our End of Meet Sale, and the other, which is our regular board, now listing those horses who are off track.
If you are interested in our First Annual End of Meet Retiring Racehorse Sale, you can go to the main Exceller Fund site here, (http://www.excellerfund.org/) and click on the red sentance in the middle of the page to find out all about it.

LOL, BeastieSlave, we're just thrilled that, after at least three weekends of rain, it looks to be dry and maybe even sunny tomorrow. Unlike CANTER, we don't take people around with us, there's only two of us and there really isn't enough time to cover the area we have to cover with buyers along. What's always fun is meeting up with trainers who have horses listed and finding out that some have sold because of the BB.
We have an appointment to take a picture of one cute mare we saw last weekend. Who knows what other treasures we'll turn up?

Personally, I am hoping that Precise Victor has found a home. He is just so special and was so gentle and quiet when we saw his teenaged rider trotting (floating) him around the shed row. Here is a link to Vic in case anyone looking for a quiet, inexpensive ($600), beautiful mover, overlooked him:

Problem is that I like Signal Red, Twisted Tour and Sordid Affair....anyone want to buy them and breed them to my stallions and they can live here?????? I truly have no more stalls for my own horses since I swore to "reserve" space in my barn for our lovely paying guests...but its soooo tempting http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
As a quick update: Kingboro's Sword runs like a pomeranian (sp?) she throws her tail over her rump and it is soo cute! American Mist who I am calling Misty (which I really dont like) is alittle off on her left front but thinks she should be allowed to run around all she wants..so she is restricted to the smaller of the round pens. She is not pleased..but WOW what a beautiful horse..wait til she matures. My boyfriend who is not a horse person fell in love with her right off.

Don't forget to take a good look at the horses that are currently listed on the regular board, the ones that are off track. In most cases, they are in barns that are very close to the track and, if you are there, it would really not be too much of a stretch to go see some of the ones at private farms.
Two that come to mind as being particularly nice are Judge Ballard and Walks on Fire. Both are really lovely animals and would make someone good horses for any discipline.

I've always thought smaller horses could be incredibly athletic and agile. Never understood the prejudice against the littler guys (says the owner of a 17-hand TB who is athletic, but...like his "mom"...not so agile. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) To me, Friend Rick just screams "eventer"!

You will have to contact them yourself and see how much they are willing to negotiate.

Oh, Sly Trickster is very, very nice. His owner loves him very much, so much that he has kept him for all of these years, after if became clear that he was never going to be a race horse. He's only letting him go now because the trainer is getting older and feels that he must reduce his herd before winter.
Sly Trickster is located off track, maybe a 20-30 minute drive from Finger Lakes. I have not received word that his owner is bringing into the track for the sale, so, technically, he is not part of it. However, don't let that stop you from giving the trainer a call and setting up an appointment to see him.

(4) Precise Victor
(5) Run Baron Run
Wish me luck guys!!!

Nice list, LoneWolf. Just two things that I want to make sure that you know.
1. Jamie J Can Too isn't technically part of the sale, as she is off the track, at a farm somewhere outside of Syracuse.
2. Run Baron Run is gorgeous. He is a colt. That doesn't mean he couldn't be gelded, but I don't know if you want to deal with that.
Hang on Tight is spectacular. The pictures really don't do him justice. The owner may very well be willing to negotiate. You may not be able to get to $1,00 but I bet you could get that price down some.

I spent a few summers way back when working at the track and TB training ctrs. I brought home more than a few OTTBs. What I found is if the trainer knows that your interested(has name/number) if it comes to the end they are usually really willing to negotiate. I got an absolutely wonderful gelding once for $400. and a couple for free.
If your not in the market but...you would if tempted then I would say contact the trainer and give them your info and if the end comes and the horse isn't placed...you'll probably get a call.

Darn old COTH was so slow today! Let's see if I can answer some questions for those who have asked.
Unfortunately, all I know about Shirl's Halo is what was written in the description. The trainer sent the picture and a little about her to us, and we posted it. I can tell you this, the trainer who has this horse is a nice person, who always has nice horses.
I also can't tell you much about Having a Fun Run. He belongs to the other organization that is co-sponsoring the sale, the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program. If you call, you can ask the vet who runs the program about his injuries.
It's hard for me to just single out a few of these horses as nice, quiet hunters. The all seem so lovely and kind to me, in the brief time I have seen them. I like Cobashack, Flag Tower, Distant Kid, Alicia's Quick Draw, for starters. But, heck, I like them all.
Lexus
Nov. 9, 2005, 06:19 PM
As a hunter person, I'd suggest Alicia's Quick Draw, he seemed extraordnarily quiet. Friend Rick is on the small side but should grow some. His conformation though is just stunning, his pedigree shows athleticism and his personality was adorable. I like the looks of Strausberg but I haven't met him personally. Finally, I love the look of Sultry Firm but I'd need to understand the weak hind end comment and what exactly is going on in the knee.
There's more and I could go on but those are the first I'd take a look at.

My father manages a small upstate NY talk radio station. In talking to him today and discussing the Finger Lake sale, he expressed his want to support the No Slaughter/Rescue cause. Both my mom and I have done reporting/remotes for the station on the side so we have our press passes we'll be bring with us on Sunday. My father will sponser public awareness on the issue on air as well as produce and air "commercials" for the rescue organizations involved (no charge for any of this). We also have a talk show host in the mornings (who also does national) who would conduct interviews on air as a favor to us to further the word on the horses plight and alternatives to slaughter. Unfortunately, it is too short notice to put this together before Sunday but I will be interviewing and taking notes for anything in the future (say a month or so from now.)
My family and I want to help in any way possible and although we don't have a lot of money or own a farm, we do have other resources and contacts that may be able to help.
If anyone has ideas or know who may be interested in providing the necessary info to produce this or be interviewed on air, including volunteers, please let me know.
Thanks!

Does anyone have any more pics or know more about Alicias Quick Draw. I am really interested. The problem is that I am not really comfortable buying sight unseen, and I am not able to get to the sale. Any words of wisdom or advice?
Louise
Nov. 10, 2005, 03:38 AM
I can probably dig up more pictures of Alicia's Quick Draw, that I took when I took the pictures that are up. They will be very similar, and not as good as those, but I'll be glad to send them along if you want to PT me with an email address. It won't be until tonight.
All I can say is that I know both Lexus and Silly Mommy, and that they are both very experienced horsewomen, and both are in hunters. The fact that both of them speak highly of this horse is a definite plus.
There will be a vet at the sale. If you decide to buy, he can always check the horse for you. In fact, we always strongly advise that any of these horses be vet checked. His information is on the Exceller site here. (http://www.excellerfund.org/) Go down the page to the red sentance about the sale and click on it. You will find much useful information.
You always are taking a risk, when you buy a horse sight unseen. But then, aren't you taking a risk when you buy any horse? You never know what is going to happen to these often delicate creatures.

Two more days until the sale! Be sure to take a good long look at all the lovely horses available. Those of you who can't come please consider buying sight unseen. There will be a vet available on Sunday for vet checks, his contact information is on the Exceller site (http://www.excellerfund.org) . Just click on the red sentance in the middle of the page about the sale. Today will be the last day that you can contact him to set up an appointment for Sunday.

Beastie, Louise and others. Well sitting on my hands here but I will be there on Sunday. Have my list down to 3 mares and will bring ONE home. I am looking for the most banged up, battle scarred, mean, orniest one I can find.
I would also like to offer a place for someone to layover a horse if you are buying from out of state, I can pick up your horse, bring it here and help arrange transport. I will be shuttling between the track about 5 times between now and the end of the meet.

Someone PLEASE take Karakoram Conquest, Shirls Halo, Pretty Little Angel. They all are just beautiful and each of these girls has that 'look' in their eye. If I only had another stall or money to add one!

Norcrest, be careful what you offer http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I have put my name in as a sort of last resort buyer. Which means that I may also end up with a banged-up beastie. Of course, I have a long list of horses who have caught my eye or touched my heart, but I hope they all find loving homes and don't need me. I'll be checking the computer and my phone looking for updates from you guys.

I had a dream that Big Time Flyer got adopted last night, but when I checked in this morning he was still listed. I wish I could make it work and bring this guy home - but even if I could afford board theres long waiting lists on the two local stables I could keep him at. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif
I really hope this weekend goes well and they find homes for many of these great horses.. there are so many!

Luvinfoofy....I think your dream will come true on Sunday when Ale sees him. She is determined to bring him home, although she has a few others on her list as well. Then I can go visit him too!
MissBri...Shirls Halo is on my short list so if noone gets her this weekend.hmmmm she could be living here shortly.
Beastie...I swear I am going to take you up on your previous offer to trade for awhile. I will happily live in 80 degree temps if you dont mind cleaning stalls in the 40's and rain! If I had someone helping me, there would be another barn up and more little girls living here! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Hi all.. I will be there and will 100% be bringing Someone home.. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I only have a limited amount to work with and with all the fan mail Big Time Flyer has been getting I don't know if he will still be available.. I have a few others in mind though. Does anyone have any really good ideas on a Future dressage mount?? Gelding, 16+ hands, clean legged.. Kinda narrows it down huh.. Hehehe My trainer is acompanying me so between her and I we are sure to find something that will eventually be as good as my older Ottb.. I have found out that Go See Michelle is still available!!! I now have first dibs come Sunday, they already have my application and have called my references and everything looks good...woohoo!!!
A quick question, does anyone know if these horses are utd on their shots and Coggins? My boarder requires (and understandably so) that they are...
Thanks - I look forward to meeting all who are there!!!
Norcrest
Nov. 11, 2005, 05:20 PM
LW13-yes they have current coggins since the track requires it. Someone else will have to answer the shot question since I have never needed to know. But I believe since they are at the track shots must also be UTD.
I also just sent you a PT http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Louise
Nov. 11, 2005, 05:30 PM
LW13, Go See Michele, being a FLTAP horse is likely to be UTD on shots. But, they should be able to tell you that, easily.
Lexus
Nov. 11, 2005, 06:07 PM
Actually, the track requires a coggins and maybe rabies (but I doubt it) other than that it depends on the trainer whether they are up to date on shots. My last mare from FL hadn't had shots in god knows how long. When I bought her and asked the trainer that question he looked at me like I had three heads so make sure to ask.
Louise would know better than I about the FLTAP horses.
Louise
Nov. 12, 2005, 02:40 AM
I'm assuming because a vet runs the program, she's not going to let these horses go unprotected. However, always best to ask.
We're getting some late additions emailed in. The information is a bit sketchy, but take a look, they look like they could be nice horses.

We were down at the track today, getting ready for the sale. We didn't take any pictures because there would be no way we would have time to get them up on the BB and into the sale notebooks we have prepared.
I can say that we did take information on a whole bunch of really nice ones. We will have a list with us, and if people are looking for that type of horse will take them to see those horses also.
Besides, I have a feeling that every trainer in the place is going to be offering horses that none of us has seen before.
Don't forget, there will be a vet available for prepurchase exams. See the Exceller Fund (http://www.excellerfund.org) site - click on the red sentance - for a description of what services he will be providing.

We are so pleased with the way things went today. We haven't formally tallied up yet, but it looks like 8 or 9 horses found new owners from Exceller, and 3 from the other organization, FLTAP. For a first time event, I think that was very, very good.
Plus, I noticed that most of the people we walked around were taking down trainer names and numbers like crazy. So, I'm hopeful that, in the very near future, we will have quite a number of horses heading off to new homes.
The people who came to the sale were very pleased, I think, with the quality of horse that was being presented. They all had very lovely, kind things to say about the job that we were doing. I even have had one owner call me already and thank us for doing what we did today.
I'm very tired, and will probably hit the hay very early tonight. But, I think all the dreams I will have will be good ones.
Many, many thanks to all who helped make today a success.

Well Big Time Flyer wasn't AT ALL what he was cracked up to be.. my main down fall was that the trainer said he was great with people but attacked other horses.. Ugh.. not on my little farm.. but he was Pretty!!! I ended up coming home with e REALLY nice 9 yr old 16.2 hand Gelding that was included in the sale but was by El Cisks Trainer.. Brassy as he is called has settled in quite nice. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
The trainers didn't seem very interested in negotating prices which kinda struck me.. I headed out with the puney $900 I had saved up and wasn't able to touch nill to nothing.. BUT our check list was quite extensive also..
I was really bothered by a trainer (No names) was trying to sell a horse with a quite sore and swollen ankle and she said that if he wasn't sold today he would be running TOMORROW!!!! UGH!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
Personally I wanted to go through and let them all free out of thir cages.. but is a no no.. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif
All in all I was hoping for a little better turn out and more trainers willing to part for a good future but Money talks...

Ugh! Hide Song find a barn... and not mine or my husband will either really kill me or commit me. Did I mention we've only been married 5 months?

Thanks so much to everyone who helped put this all together. My mom and I both felt very welcomed and at ease and although an incredibly hectic day, it was very rewarding.
Go See Michelle came home last night with help from Norcrest (thanks again!) and she settled in very nicely and was quite happy munching away on her hay. My mom had to drag me away as I was ready to sleep in the stall with her...lol. As I work in VA Monday through Friday, my family will be visiting her daily in my absence. (It killed me since I had to be on a plane at 6 am this morning..soooo didn't want to leave http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif) I will take bunches of pics this coming weekened and post them for those who are interested! Louise,
I am wondering if you can list the horses that were sold? I looked at a bunch of horses at the track two weeks ago and I am wondering if some of them are still available? Will the horses that were not sold be moved over to the other exceller list that you keep?
Thanks a bunch!
Louise
Nov. 14, 2005, 02:15 PM
We won't have a good answer for a few days, on what horses were sold. Best way to tell is to keep checking the board. It was right up to snuff as of the day of the sale. As we hear from the trainers, we will be transferring horses to the archives.
The horses that didn't sell are still for sale. Eventually, the two forums on the BB will be merged again. It may take the administrator of the board a while to do that, as it isn't the easiest task in the world.
