I always thought that the stall would have an automatic waterer...hmmm they really took her water away? Why not place it up high so a baby would not hit it accidentally? All our stalls have automatic small waterers and buckets in the runs.

When one of my mares had a dystocia, I had to take off my sweatshirt because I could not get my sleave pushed up past my elbow. My vet had me hold the foal down until she got there (30 minutes) while my husband walked her. So I scrubbed down with betadine and walked behind the mare with my entire arm swallowed by this mare's HUGE belly. It was so weird! And cold! UPDATE!!!!!!

The update acknowledges the discharge. Mine occasionally will have a "bloody show" with the loss of the mucous plug, but none have had a discharge like this. Anyone have experience with this?

OM, I suggested the plunger. Lst night we were trying to come up with as many songs about butts as possible. We have been playing the game 99 spots on the appy's big rump, and the two picture show we had were very nice. Everyone has such cute babies of all kinds, cats, birds, dogs, horses etc..

Oh, guys I have a better one than that. True story to follow. I had a mare due, and had watched her all night long, and she held on for dear life and did not have the foal by morning. So, I turned her out in her pasture for the day. I had to go out every 30 minutes all day long knowing she was due to pop any minute and should have popped the night before. On my 2:30 PM check, I walked out into the field and as I approached her, she broke her water right infront of me!!! I'm in a panick, thing if she foals at the bottom of this hill, I'm going to be carrying a new born up this huge hill. I look around and start thinking, "how in the hell am I going to get this mare up the hill and into the barn...no halter, no rope with me...so I take a quick look around and think..most of the neighbors "should be" at work and most of my neighbors are not likely to see me here in the field.."unless they have their bonochulars sp? looking for me"...so off goes my shirt, and I wrap it around her neck and up the hill we go. I get her through the gate and start up the hill...and DAMMMMMM...here comes the Vet!!!! Shit!!! Shit!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif What the hell am I going to do now/?????? I was at the other end of the barn approaching the doors and he is approaching the other end at the doors. I stop at my end and I'm say...Lizzie now Lizzie stay girl..stay..like she's a dog who will obey...right and I think, well now if I walk in the barn to her stall the Vet is going to see me full view...Bra and shorts!!!! What do I do...Lizzie stay, Oh Lizzie please stay, I take the shirt off her neck...in fear she will run back to the field where her girl friends are and be loose with a baby hanging out the back of her...agian..Lizzie please say girl...I wipe off the shirt and put it over my head...there goes Lizzie....DAMMM..she walked right up the barn ileway and walked into the foaling stall, where she had been all night until morning and dropped down and started pushing the foal out the door in the isleway...I look up at my Vet at the other end of the barn and hell...come she is foaling NOW!!! He comes down with his helper and looks at me funny, like why is the mare foaling in the door way of the stall. I of course had to explain myself and he and his helper, have NEVER, EVER let me forget about it. The helper did say, he saw "me walking the mare up, but I was on the other side and wondered what the "white thing" around the mares neck was!!! Imagin the timing of that for him to come at that very moment!!! I was worried about my neighbors not the vetting coming at that very moment!!! And of course the other 5 vets and secretaries had to hear all about it from my Vet...so I blush everytime I have to go up there for anything. If, I had a cam...oh my the stories!

funny you should mention cats...
this weekend I worked at the vet clinic. about 9am we get a call from a gal, she says she just woke up but their cat got hit by a car last night and can they bring it in to be euthanized...oh how much is that by the way. So we advise and she says they will be in. So they bring in this little 4 month old kitten...who is not the bill the cat, mangled half dead thing we expected..no she actually very stable and only thing wrong is some facial swelling and a broken cheek bone. They cant afford to do anything and want vet to put her to sleep still. Vet tells then to pay $25 and we will either put her to sleep or see if she can be saved and rehomed....so they leave and vet turns to me and says..well you got yourself a new cat! LOL
(since I was the one bugging the vet to not put her to sleep) which is fine...so now she is inside...poor thing..my cats are having a hissy litterally but she is doing OK

Since we're talking about cats... who can tell me the frequency of their heats?? I've been watching a stray I've had for a month since I have NO idea if she's been spayed. So far I have not noticed any obnoxious screaming heat behavior. Hopefully that's a good sign.

Onetempies-cats are kind weird in that if they come into heat they will wait to ovulate until they are bred...so that means if they are not bred they will stay in heat for some time! Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Sometimes on a female a vet can feel an excision scar though.

yeah its a dangerous job though...this is the 2nd kitten in 3 months I hve brought home...that last one some people brought it in cause they found her and couldnt keep her to they were going to pay to have her euthanized too. Re: feral kitties.. check to see if her ear is notched. Cats that are neutered and let free again usually have a notched ear to indicate they've been speyed.

There were a bunch of us watching ... she postured, broke her water and laid right down (got up and down a couple of times) and had that baby ... 21 minutes flat. She was sneaky and ate her hay right up to the last minute. The filly was on her feet right away.

I know I feel entirely riped off by CA vet prices...I am trying to talk one of our vets into the surgery as the only thing that can be done is to remove the ball joint entirely. Too small for replacement and too much damadge for a three year old for reconstruction.

Those dogs are the biggest cuddle bugs I have ever seen, they really wiggle their way into your heart. They are so thankful for being rescued it seems.

1 semi outdoor Bloodhound (sleeps in the laundery room. We rescued her 3 years ago, had her spayed and startedlooking for a new home for her....we're still looking, lol)

1 English Coonhound that lives in our Dog Kennels. We rescued her right before she had 9 puppies on Christmas day. They look Lab mix. We adopted one out today, but still have 8 left....)

I have to laugh because I told my mom last night that "the watch" had begun again and that Frosty definitely looked ready. She told me there was no way. My mom got hooked on a foal watch with a webcam mare a couple of years ago when she was staying with me. She watched for days and we missed the foal being born in the middle of the night.

I called my mom into my room earlier when Frosty went daown and told her "Oh, it looks like were foaling" so in comes my mom with her taco chips to watch. Oops, false alarm.
