Good morning all! Well are these mares in collusion or what? Here most of us spent the entire night - or the vast majority of it) watching Frosty and Annie be restless and rub buts and paw and be huge and stuff - and hilltop goes and pops a foal! (and I missed it - couldn't keep my eyes open another minute - darn it!) I read all the posts about it though. And oh my gosh is that baby cute! (is everyone SURE a gelding can't have a baby???? Weather is supposed to get crappy. Stalls are ready so when the action hits, I just have to go put them in, change blankets and fill water buckets. Feeling great thanks! Definately no motivation- you are right, the cold tends to do that. I have annoying errands I have to run today and I would much rather remain parked in front of my puter.
Question for ya- I will be a first time breeder (going to try to start getting her in foal toward the end of Marchish)- how many nights did you have to spend with Bugs sleeping in the freezing barn? If my girl is like Frosty I think I'm going to need to plan a trip to Hawaii after all is said and done!!

No foaling alarm. I wouldn't mind aiming for the mid or end part of May though. I was sooooo cold and. I would have rather stayed in the stall next to her than in the car. I just couldn't stand the cold. I didn't want to do barn chores or anything because I wanted her to have her privacy. I had layers on, a huge parka on and was qrapped up in her wool cooler. When my mare foaled at 5:30 my husband had just gotten home from work and we were both watching on the TV monitor. I was trying to get him to change into barn clothes..but he was being poky. I was pregnant and when I got there the filly was huge and needed his help. He showed up in shorts..thats it, no shoes, no shirt! He had to squish around the stall to help me get the fillies shoulders out.

The owners posted on the update page of their site that Frosty is dripping quite a lot of milk and that her behaviour is unlike any of her previous foalings. I wonder if they've milked her at all to save some colostrum or not. I hope everything's ok with her.

We can't believe Frosty has not foaled yet. She's not following her past foaling routine at all! But I guess that's true with all moms - sometimes you have a quick delivery and sometimes you have a lengthier one. Frosty is feeling fine, "normal" labor discomfort. But now we are getting into a tad more difficult territory with a lot of colostrum having leaked out already - since 5 last night. But never fear, we always check transfer levels and the baby will get enough good stuff one way or the other. About eight years ago was the only time the Igg test came back way too low on the new little one and then we did a plasma transfer on Day 2 and the little gal was fine. The mare was a sweet Shetland I used to own that now our good friends love to pieces. Ok, I'm rambling. Too tired. Hope you can unscramble our messages today - sorry, in advance! Thank you all for your interest in Frosty and for losing precious sleep keeping her company.

I know it is hard to turn these mares out when they are so close to delivering but I wonder if they had a small paddock they could turn her out in for a short time so she can stretch her legs. (keeping and eye on her the whole time, of course) Of course, maybe not today but a day or two ago would have been ok, I think.

Since using Foal Alert milk test kits, I have never spent more than 2 nights mare watching. It has been 100% accurate for me for the last 9 foals. I also had a standard video camera in the barn attached to the house by coax cable, but I lost that set up when my barn burned. I will be setting up another camera in my new barn. Will try to get a Web Cam set up for you guys.

Annie does not concern as she has been so quiet, but Frosty's behavior concerns me. Anytime my mares go over 12 hours with pacing, digging, sweating, etc., they always have some sort of complication and needed assistance delivering.

We can't believe Frosty has not foaled yet. She's not following her past foaling routine at all! But I guess that's true with all moms - sometimes you have a quick delivery and sometimes you have a lengthier one. Frosty is feeling fine, "normal" labor discomfort. But now we are getting into a tad more difficult territory with a lot of colostrum having leaked out already - since 5 last night. But never fear, we always check transfer levels and the baby will get enough good stuff one way or the other. About eight years ago was the only time the Igg test came back way too low on the new little one and then we did a plasma transfer on Day 2 and the little gal was fine. The mare was a sweet Shetland I used to own that now our good friends love to pieces. Ok, I'm rambling. Too tired. Hope you can unscramble our messages today - sorry, in advance! Thank you all for your interest in Frosty and for losing precious sleep keeping her company

My sister had her second baby in November and went on for weeks. Two weeks before she delivered the mid wife was telling her should could have her anytime and probably wouldn't make it through the weekend.

I think that Frosty is taking the same approach to childbearing.

As uncomfortable as she is, I would have my vet out if she does not foal within the next two hours. In my opinion, she has been doing this too long. When she does foal, it may be that her foal is very large and may need help.

Here's the UPDATE FROM THE SADDLEBROOK BB:

We can't believe Frosty has not foaled yet. She's not following her past foaling routine at all! But I guess that's true with all moms - sometimes you have a quick delivery and sometimes you have a lengthier one. Frosty is feeling fine, "normal" labor discomfort. But now we are getting into a tad more difficult territory with a lot of colostrum having leaked out already - since 5 last night. But never fear, we always check transfer levels and the baby will get enough good stuff one way or the other. About eight years ago was the only time the Igg test came back way too low on the new little one and then we did a plasma transfer on Day 2 and the little gal was fine. The mare was a sweet Shetland I used to own that now our good friends love to pieces. Ok, I'm rambling. Too tired. Hope you can unscramble our messages today - sorry, in advance! Thank you all for your interest in Frosty and for losing precious sleep keeping her company.
