At least this boy is trying to get up. Chev said screw it after a few minutes cuz his legs were so long. So he just CRAWLED between Sass' back legs to try and get a drink. Of course we didn't let him get away with it THAT easy! So we lifted the kid up and had to hold him AND Sass. But once he was up he stayed up for well over an hour!

Amy, yeah, Sass wasn't that quick either. Her water broke at like 9:30 or 10pm... and she didn't have Chev all the way out till 11:15pm WITH vet assistance.

They will probably come in soon to give her some banamine so she can relax and the baby will be able to nurse. Not uncommon for the mares to be really uncomfortable after foaling.

DUH!! Guess I could have read the screen! I didn't catch up too fast from going to the barn to check buckets and hay for the evening. My brain had to thaw out a bit first! Now they are talking like we get this mess continuing through tomorrow evening! Right now it is mostly sleet too!! It took a while for Frodo to nurse. He tried to get up right away, he was not even all of the way out yet, but everytime he managed to get up, Bugs was down, she was exhausted and still having contractions. She as crampy for a while. Sometimes they can take up to and hour or two to nurse, any long and they need intervention.

I've had a few that if it's been a really big baby there is a heck of a vacuum left. They're still experiencing some pretty strong contractions as well. The age of the mare plays a big part of it too.

No need to worry. It takes time for everything to start working properly. He's up in good time and should start nursing within an hour or so. Strong colt to be up within 15 minutes of foaling. Can't tell if mama has expelled the placenta, but she has three hours to be safe.

That's a pretty good sized boy... so I'm sure it's going to take awhile for everything to fall back into place inside her. My vet said the same thing about Sass after Chev was born. That with his size she'd probably be (WOO! Close up of child! look at that white!)... anyway, that she'd probably be crampy for a few days.

Then she wouldn't stand still to let him nurse. After she warmed up to the idea of having a child... she had to stay FACING him. So when he'd go to nurse, she'd swing her butt away. Boy did that piss him off! So I had to hook a chain on her to get her to stand while trainer held Chev in place to nurse.

That is exactly what happened when frodo was born, Bugs was afraid of him at first, not at all aggressive, but she was trembling.

We have snow coming tomorrow too. They say it is a "winter storm", but I bet we only get a dusting. So far, this winter has been very mild and VERY muddy. We have only had to break ice a dozen times or so. But, January is usually our bad month, so we will see. The tornados start in March. I still need to figure out how to get the whole crew into the storm shelter!

Was Annie just eating hay? I guess that means not soon, huh? I was at one foaling and it was a booger. Spent a week sleeping in the barn because baby had problems after being borse. I was living at a Quarter Horse Racing barn and the owner was shall we say spastic. She actually gave up when the foal would not nurse or stay up and she told me she was going into the house and I could do what I wanted. Well, I have to say, I guess I saved that baby's life. Her husband came out and helped me and we stayed with him forever. The vet came and stayed a while, but the woman whose so called passion this was went to bed! I had to milk the mare and try to shoot the milk down the baby's throat with a syringe. Then he colicked like the second night and I held him in my lap while the vet put a needle in his stomach and let the gas off. As far as I know, he is a healthy racing 3 year old by now. That place gave me a lot of experiences that I would not trade for the world, but it was nonetheless scary.

Tell me about it! She was all crying and everything and said she just could not take it anymore. This was like her 15th foal or something and my first (and only so far). I don't care what kind of baby it was (mouse, bird, etc.) I was staying with him to try to save him.

Of course this is the same woman who told me she would give me 10% for any horses I sold for her. She had 30 horses, 2-yo, 3-yo, 4-yo, etc. She had more money than sense, needless to say. So I showed one eventer I know of one of the 3-year-olds. He hadn't been ridden since he was backed as a 2-yo and I worked with him in the round pen and showed him to this girl like 5 times (down in FL in 100-deg weather) and worked my butt off. She bought him for $3500 and when I asked about my cut, she told me that she really didn't have the funds to give me anything. I left a week later. I know the experience I got there was invaluable, but it would have been nice to have been paid. I actually worked there for an apartment and board for my horse and I gave lessons. I loved, loved, loved doing that and would do it again, but I guess you gotta get it in writing. Believe me, this woman had tons of $$$$$.
