They're bedding Abby's stall! She must be getting close. I have a vested interest in this one as Abby will be coming to Georgia to live with me after she weans this PINTO FILLY (that's my guess)http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I am ... LOL! I could not get into Yahoo tonight. She is being pretty restless ... shuffling feet and wringing tail ... which she has not been doing at all. She has also been a little sweaty the last 2 days. Her hindquarters are jello. Still no milk or big bag. I have only had one mare (another maiden) foal without a bag. I had one mare go 6 wks late (I question the breeding dates!) and another mare that always foaled between 318 and 322 days (3 times, well developed foals). All of my other mares foaled between 336 and 344 days from ovulation. She is now 338 days, so I laid down straw to be safe. Now, she will probably hang on to this foal for the next 2 weeks. Sigh!
The waiting is KILLING me! When it happens, I'll give a thumbs up for a filly and a thumbs up for color ... with my luck, I'll get a chestnut colt. Although, I will settle for spectacular movement and conformation in any color.

Hubby is sawing logs with his cell phone under his pillow just in case I need his help.
Last check, mare was on her side, legs outstretched, breathing hard....I walk in and think, "yea, this is it..." She's having contractions...but she see's me, hops up and proceeds to eat some hay....

Puh-lease tell me you are not foaling in the dark ages and don't have a sneaky spy camera set up! I'll be kicking back on my couch to night on foal watch! I know that you know that if they see you in the barn after 11 pm they will certainly cross their legs for at least another 2-3 days! Seriously...I'd be so shocked if you didn't have a foal camera I might have to just load up Gracie and drive to your place and set one up for you http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

The original plan was that the barn apartment would be finished by foaling season. It has windows overlooking the broodmare stalls. So, I eventually will be able to sit back in front of an open window and listen and watch...
However, you know how building goes...
We looked into all sorts of foal cams, but none of the wireless ones would transmit all the way from the barn to the house - which is around 600 feet.
So, then we looked at the hard wired ones and realized that we should wait to dig one ditch that would contain all of the lines we would ever need...
Anyway, that means this season, we're foaling in the dark ages -- with hubby all tucked in his bed. I watch until 5:30sm and come in for some sleep. He goes down when I get back and watch until the morning crew comes in at 7:30.
You're more than welcome to come help me install a system and bring darling Gracie with you!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I make a killer margarita. That sounds like way more fun than hanging out in the barn all night!!!

Uhhhggggg. Just got back from the barn. I swear that mare has radar. She knew I was there. She didn't see me, but I could tell that she sensed I was there. So, I just gave up and walked over to her to see how she was doing. Dripping milk, tummy rumbling, very ready. So, I just gave everyone some extra hay and figured I wouldn't bother her for another 2 hours.
Of course I had to play with my dahhhrling Radjah colt while I was down there. He's so sweet. I just get down on my knees and he comes right over to visit. I'm hoping the next one is even half as sweet!!

Hidden hill...you're insane!!! I can't imagine how I survived without cameras and alarms...at least now I can sleep a little in front of the TV with the alarms set so I don't miss anything. I'm jealous that Showjumper got her e-cams up...I really need that too...then I can spy from my office too!!!
Seriously though...beg, borrow or steal a foaling alarm at least!!!! Then you can sleep in the barn until the alarm wakes you up to check for false alarms.
Actually though...we boosted a camera system with an old broken VCR so we could get the signal run to the house. That way you can use cheap cable too...just run it above ground and if it gets ruined it's cheap...and a great use for an old VCR that doesn't play tapes anymore!
Margaritas sound lovely....after that we'd be good and ready to install some cameras...since I'm such a technical genius before adding tequila!
I think my mare has another week or so but...wow...she's been acting funny tonight...maybe sooner than I think...

My mare, who is way over due, lies down alot at nite. Last nite at 3:30, she was calmly lying down in her stall. She rolls once a day too- is that normal. She is not distressed about it either. However, she was very grouchy this morning when I tried to check her bag- she kicked at me- which is very unlike her. Thanks,Robyn

Hidden Hill, my camera broke so I had to buy a new new one and I got it off of ebay. Here's another one they are offering:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14957&item=3084772888
It works great. You will have buy more cable, but you can get another 500 feet of cable from Radio Shack. It think it was around $100. I don't have mine underground. It looks like a thick coated telephone line and I just use it when I need to and then roll it back up and store it for the next time. My barn is about 500 feet away from our house and it works just fine. When I can justify the expense (next year I should have 3 top quality foals), then I will get my foal cam, but in the meantime, my current set up has worked out just fine.
Good luck with your foaling.

My mare isn't due for around another 5 weeks so I have some time but my camera is up and I check on her often. She's an experienced broodmare (had 7 foals) but I haven't been able to get much information about her previous foalings since her previous owner doesn't speak ANY Engish. She's as big a house already and has a little bag. She's not relaxed much through her croup so I'm sure we have lots of time. However, when my last Oldenburg mare foaled (maiden) she had not been relaxed either and she had her foal with very few signs of being ready foal. She's another one of those mares that did not read the book! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

That is a very slick setup for the money! We bought one of the ones that has multiple channels so we can watch more that one stall but the signal won't make it to the barn...hence our homemade booster (also to use cheap coax cable for the long run to the house)...so that's very cool that the camera you posted will make it long distance...I can think of a few people I will definitely pass that on to....

Sigh ... waited for my son to get up at 6:00 am this morning and crashed for 6 hours. Still no baby. Really nice thing about the big stall is that it is very easy to clean. Abby poops in one end and lives in the other. I was surprised at how big the 12 x 24 seems, as Abby is a nice sized mare (substantial 16.2 hands).

Sounds like she is very close ... Reno bucked and reared and ran backwards for about 6 hours when she had Twiggy. She is such a pansy about pain.
Abby's temp is 99.4 today. We had a 30 degree drop in temp (80 to 50 degrees) over night, but she is still sweaty. Her teats are still soft, but her bag is very hard and glistening in appearance. She has bloody show (mucous plug) all down her hind legs today. I would guess that she will foal during the next 48 hours.

Seriously, I think he feels sorry for me as he did the 9 pm check so I could sleep for 2 hours.
The worst part right now is the weather. It's going to be in the 20's tonight and tomorrow. I have heat lamps on in the stall, but the ride down to the barn and back is COLD!!
My vet can't believe she hasn't had this foal yet. Tomorrow will be day 7 of red test strips and odd behavior. Oh well. Maiden mare...
Since we're giving the thumbs up for what we want... My dark bay sabino mare (big white blaze, white stockings and white lower lip) had better make me a bay baby with tons of chrome... colt or filly is fine -- after everything she's put me through... Seriously, I'm preparing for a chestnut filly with no white... that would be just my luck.
I guess the only good thing about this is that I have plenty of time to spend with our newly adopted puppy, Lilly. She's a doll, but thinks these are the hours we normally keep. She's getting used to checking the horses at night.

Temp ... there is usually a significant drop in body temp before foaling. You have to make sure to get a baseline several weeks prior. Abby is usually around 100.8. Abby is very miserable, and clingy. One of those mares that WANTS someone to sit with her. LOL, she would probably foal if I went and sat in her stall. Look how much bigger her belly looks than a few days ago. Her butt has really expanded over the last 24 hours too (never had one do that before). Her poor vulva is practically inside out and the edges are purple and bruised looking.

I am watching "That's My Baby" on Animal Planet right now. They have Rose, the Clyesdale, foaling. She is owned by the granddaughter of the founder of Anheuser-Busch. Wow, this lady is horse inept. I was watching her feed the mare treats and she acts afraid. The barn manager told her to feel the baby kick and she goes over and feels the mare's chest behind her elbow. She shuts the stall door and does not even know how to latch it. The barn manager calls her when the mare gets ready to foal. She goes out to the barn and tells the camera crew that the barn manager is not in the barn because it is cold. Sigh. She tells the barn manager that she will watch the mare so he can get a couple of hours of sleep. Does she wake him when the mare starts to circle? Nope. The mare goes down a few times and she does not even notice when the mare breaks her water. Sigh. The mare starts to foal ... she is in the manager's house ... does she wake him up ... NO! ... she runs to the barn and calls him with her cell phone. Sigh. Right now she is loudly cheering on the mare. Urgh!!!!

Congrats to HHF. Quantum Leap, you have my sympathy and so does your pretty mare.
We are thanking the foaling angels for a filly born last night at 10:30 at 319 days to Rohanna (Rohdiamant / Freiherr/ Aktuell) -- a pretty, leggy bay with two hind sox. All went very smoothly and by the book. This is Roh's third foal and third filly. She is by Wolkentanz. I'll post pictures soon. Now I need to come up with ANOTHER W name...

Quantum leap,
If it makes you feel any better my next mare is one that has foaled twice before (but not for me) and carried over 350 days. She is a drama queen who does NOT like pain. She is 332 days today and has no bag to speak of. She is round, but not dropped and looks like she will carry this one forever. And the last one for this year is an ET foal. The recipient mare is not exactly sweetness and light. I know I will have some FUN http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif trying to sample her milk.
My easy one is over. The next two are gonna be something else... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I have been lurking on this thread on and off for quite a while now. I just went to the chat room on Quantum leap's site, but for some reason, it won't load for me?
Anyway, just wanted to say that the "beached whale syndrome" phrase nearly made me fall off my chair laughing. When I was pregnant, I felt exactly the same way!!
Here's hoping for tonight - I don't have to get up so early in hte am, so I can watch for quite a while. Now, if I could just get a faster internet connection, I could almost watch in "real time" http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Fingers are crossed for Abby!

Yep...looks like both SJ66 and I both got skunked last night. Mine has been pacing since 11pm last night....nonstop....so much for sleep. This AM she's got inch long wax...and still pacing so I'm really hoping for one of those rare midday foalings...and on a Saturday no less when I dont have to skip work!
SJ66-Yes...I hear that mare had an awesome foal...I guess he's so gigantic she has to send pics to describe him....I'm very excited to see him.
