We had a very successful End of Season sale last week, with 16 counted so far as sold and the numbers still coming in. I think that's very good for a first time effort, and a one day event. Thank all of you who came, looked and bought so very much.

Now, the end of the season is drawing ever closer and we have some wonderful animals left who really need to find homes. Pleae, someone, open your heart to one of these great horses, they repay you many times over.

Take a look at Hide Song. (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1129480948) This beautiful guy is a real bargain at $600. And, the trainer told us that price is very negotiable.

Also, King Rodeo (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1131542433) needs to find a home quickly. He is a gorgeous animal, and according to the trainer just needs some time off. The asking price for him is $750, and like most of these horses, that is highly negotiable.

There is also Best at Law. (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1127616795) We haven't seen this trainer in a while, and I'm betting that by now that $1,500 price is also very negotiable. He lost an eye this year, but golly, he's a gorgeous animal, and most people on an earlier thread about him thought that it wouldn't be a problem.

In addition to those three, make sure you look at these guys:

Fifty-three Cards (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1127059579) currently $600 and negotiable. The owner loves this horse and wants desperately to find him a good and loving home.

Alicia's Quick Draw (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1127617199) who is newly reduced to $600 negotiable. Another sweetie who wants to be somebody's horse.

Coboshack (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1122164787) This guy has been off the track for a bit, and the trainer wants to see him off to a good home. He has reduced the asking price to $1,000 which is, again, negotiable.

These are all nice horses, who need to find someone to love them. Isn't there someone out there who has room in their hearts for them?

Wow! Some of those are really, really nice horses!

Posting my personal favorite again Big Time Flyer (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1123992847) . Word has it he doesn't get along with other horses too well, but people are great. Definitely worth investigating...

*sigh* OK, can you tell me anything about Hide Song? (Other than he's big, he's bay, and I loff his pedigree? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

And do you know any pedigree info on 53 Cards?

Surely one of the big barns could consider Best at Law as a school horse. Did I see somewhere that artificial eyes were available for horses?

If anyone knows any shippers coming down South from that way could you let me know please?

Fifty-three Cards is lovely, and he is really a people horse. He's been treated like a pet by his trainer, and it shows. Somebody needs to take this guy home, so he can love on you.

War Admiral,

I just shipped a horse north using 'Diesel Dave' listed on the Exceller Finger Lakes site. He is currently making runs to Florida from Finger Lakes. He was VERY reasonable and with excellent service and concern for the horse. I would highly recommend him.

Also, I helped out at the sale and really liked Fifty Three Cards. The listing says he cribs but I saw no evidence of it at all and the people I was with spent quite a bit of time with him. He was a gentleman the entire time.

Yep, Fifty Three Cards really has a look about him, doesn't he? Both him and Alicia's Quick Draw both look like they could canter in front of your leg all day long...

Oh WA, PLEASE get Hide Song!! I was given a quote of $500 to bring a beastie all the way to south GA. You'd think that with you being farther north by about 3 1/2 hours that would shave a bit off....

DMK,

Fifty Three cards and Alicia's Quick Draw would both make nice hunters. AQD has a nice, big, round barrel to take up lots of leg. He's a cute horse.

Wow..they are all gorgeous! And I am going to sing my whiny "Why can't I be closer" song.

And as a side note-we have a schoolie at the barn that only has one eye and she does great-x country, stadium, dressage---she does it all without a problem! So if someone is interested in that sweet grey and the eye thing is holding you back, please know that it does not always mean there will be an issue.

I have never even considered a horse with a bone chip, can anyone tell me the logistics?

Bensmom
Nov. 23, 2005, 08:33 AM
Diana -- I'm not familiar much with knee chips, but I can share what I know from having chips removed from fetlocks.

Many times, when a bone chips a bit off, the body surrounds it with a protective coating of scar tissue, and it doesn't rub anything and doesn't hurt the horse. If the chip has rounded edges, it typically isn't painful, at least this is what the surgeon at UF told me.

Horses can go along with chips and be totally fine for a long time, but sometimes, something happens and changes it -- in Buzz's case, the scar tissue on his big chip had worn off and though it was a rounded one, it was lodged in the joint in such a way (think guitar pick sticking out and twanging against other parts of the joint) that we had to get it out.

Since Florida was running a special at the vet school "any additional arthroscopy $100 per joint" (I am NOT making this up! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif ) I did both ankles even though the right ankle was a smaller chip and not a problem yet. Now it won't be http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Knees are a little trickier because it is made up of three joints, and the bottom joint is impossible to get into arthroscopically -- but it sounds as if his chip isn't bothering him at present, and depending on where it is, he might be fine for what we do with them, even if it wouldn't be a good idea to keep racing him on it.

Fessy's Mom is probably our resident expert on knees and chips, since I think Abe had a number of them, and she may be able to give you more insight.

Please guys, keep shopping! I promise you, if I could afford it and had room, I'd take several more . . .

On the happy note, our barn "family" just got a new member this week! He isn't living with me, but is rather with his owner at school, but one of the ones Mapleshade brought down from Suffolk is now part of our family! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He sounds like a sweetheart and I know so many of these other guys are as well, so keep on shopping!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Diana, Heidi had a fractured little bone in her knee about the size of the end joint of your thumb, and it could not be removed or a domino effect would result, the little round bone was broken into three pieces and could not be pinned, so she became a broodmare (had Contessa) and her knee continues to enlarge so she was never considered sound for any training.
I noticed the horse you are considering is a cribber, and there are some impossible cribbers, just ask me, I had one!! She was a woodchuck in the short time I had her, sent her to FL and she even cribbed on electric fence, with collar and this condition was not disclosed to me. I would suggest you pass on this one (family suggestion dear, Larry says pass!!!) I'm sure you can find a good prospect nearer to you. The shipping would be astronomical so he would no longer be such a good deal. You'll find the right one and you'll know its the right one. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Off to the track this morning. Things are winding down, with the last race day being November 29. After that the trainers have a few days to vacate the track.

So, time is getting very short. Please take a good hard look at these horses, and see if there isn't room in your heart and your pasture for one or two of them.

Jersey Rio -- one of the haulers on the list of haulers on the web site will go between Finger Lakes and Florida and will deviate up to 100 miles from the interstate.

Here is his ad:

Horse Transport going South (primarily on I-95, but possibly can go off the beaten path 100-200 miles) from Finger Lakes Racetrack (near Rochester, NY) to Ocala, Florida, approximately every other week. Competitive Rates. Contact: Dave Markgraf, cell (585)230-6533.

He hauled a horse for a friend of mine in June and did it for an amazingly low price and had wonderful care.

Happy shopping!

Good news! Hide Song, Qalicia's Quick Draw and Sordid Affair have all found new homes. Best of luck to them as the move to a new life.

We took eight new listings today, that should be up by tomorrow at the latest. There are some nice horses in the group including a lovely mare by the name of Elaine Marie.

The season has been extended a couple of days, and will end at the end of next week. That is still not much time, so we need to get as many of these horses into new homes as possible soon.

What usually happens to horses if they don't find a home by the end of the meet. Auction?? If so, which auction usually gets the Finger Lakes horses??

If there was any way in the world I could take one of these guys, I would.. I'm spreading the word.. there are so many lovely horses!

Louise
Nov. 26, 2005, 03:47 PM
We never know, luvinfoofy. Many of these trainers will take the horses home for the winter. Some others are moving on to other tracks, where the season is a bit longer, some even going to Florida for the winter season there. We just never know if any of them are going to end up at auction. We pray that they don't.

If they do go to auction, the most likely place for them to go is Unadilla, in the southern part of New York State.

I just logged on to the Exceller site. It's hard for me to look at this because I work at FL and want so much for these horses to find good homes.

Immediately, two of these horses sprung out at me. First is Union Dues. He belongs to my son and his girlfriend. He's a big, sweet, handsome horse who is begging to be a dreamboat in a show ring. He's an easy keeper and has been extremely well cared for. His mommy is intent on finding him the very best home.

The second stand-out is Bewitching Eyes. I've contemplated claiming her because she is one remarkable old broad. She has an outstanding race record and the fact that she's been hitting the board as an 11 year old is testimony to her hardiness and courage. She's exactly the mare to consider as a broodmare because of that. Please, please put her on your short list. I'm guessing that the owner will negotiate price because she's been running for $4,000 here. I truly believe she's worth every penny of that. She's a hard knocker and deserves a good home. Please please please.....

Hunt_Jump - I think Captain Spaulding is around 16 hands. That's a guestimate, because we don't carry a stick around. The guy handling him was pretty tall, which may explain why he looks smaller. Here's his pedigree Captain Spaulding (http://www.pedigreequery.com/captain+spaulding)

Lion, Gramps is, to me at least, special. He just screams hunter and if half of what the trainer says about him is true, he is a saint. I certainly didn't see any signs of mischief when I was photographing him. He stood like a perfect gentleman.

BeastieSlave, I really would if I had somewhere inexpensive to keep a stallion until my horse sells. I looked into board options around here a few months back, and finding board for a stud is difficult enough much less affordable board. Beezer, if you're having trouble accessing the main Exceller site, you can at least get to the Bulletin Board here. (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi#general)

Though, I just tried the main site (Exceller Fund) (http://www.excellerfund.org/) and had no trouble getting in.

Don't forget to look at some of the horses that have been up for a while also. Somebody out there needs Walks on Fire. He's gorgeous, and kind, and I just can't understand why he isn't long gone. Zebadiah Eagle, Andrea's Star, Best at Law. They're all so nice, and they all want to find someone who is their's alone.

What are your honest opinions of Final Markdown and Captain Spaulding? For people who have seen them. What limitations do you think they would have in the future? Any obvious flaws conformationally or otherwise? I'm trying to be good I have two more weeks for the barn to be usable and I will have 7 new open stalls (12 total but some are already taken). Not good. It's like having an empty shelves that need more trinkets to sit on them.

Sam did well shipping from AZ to KY in January -- on his thread, LH had a great tale about the company she used. I'll try to find it and post the link here -- it might be worth checking to see if they could do as well or better for you.

It is so exciting to see these guys getting homes, and so frustrating to want to help, but to know you just can't take more. &lt;sigh&gt;

Louise -- any updates on Big Time Flyer?

oh, and diana, did you see that there is a RFDTV program scheduled for Dec 9 called "Woody's Return" I'm willing to bet that it is all about the munchkin's comeback last year . . . http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ok, here is the info, hopefully LH won't mind me sharing it here:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Cowboy Express seems to go all over the country. In the 7 days I was in contact with them, one or the other of their rigs was in Ohio, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, California, Arizona, Indiana and Kentucky.

His web site is: http://www.cowboy-express.com/pages/1/index.htm

His email is Cowboyexpressmt@yahoo.com

His phone numbers are:

home: 1 800 982 1930
cell: 406 670 8567
cell: 406 690 0390

I know he travels with a laptop and looks up routes and mileage on Mapquest so he can give you a quote very quickly. He also has 2 drivers at all times and both rigs are quite new and in great shape. they are 7 horse Sundowner slantloads.

As I said, based on this experience, I would not hesitate to use him again. I believe that his policy is to always be the low quote. You tell him what your best quote is and he will beat it.

I hope I am not steering anyone wrong by telling you about Kenny. I would not mention his name if I had anything at all that made me gunshy about him since I have had some horror stories shipping horses. But, of course, my exposure to his company is limited and so I certainly cannot guarantee anything.

But we have had posts which have named vanning companies which have provided bad service. So, its a nice change to mention one that has given good service at an excellent rate.

And, how else would we all find out about a company out of Montana called Cowboy Express?

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

LH said that Sam traveled very well -- it might be worth giving Kenny a call!

Oh Yay! I am so happy for both you and 53 Cards, dianad! What a wonderful thing you are doing, sending from so far away for one of these sweet horses. Congratulations on your great new friend!

smilton, you picked a couple of nice ones. I really liked Final Markdown, for a young guy he was remarkably well behaved. As I tell everyone, I'm a terrible judge of horses, because I think that they are all beautiful. Both Final Markdown and Captain Spaulding are nicely bred, and both look to me to be fine young animals.

Oh, and Bensmom, Big Time Flyer is definitely on the market still. There was apparently a deal going through, but it didn't materialize. So this athlete still needs a home.

This is turning out to be a good day for the Exceller horses, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to everyone who looks at these horses, and care so much about what happens to them.

The racing season originally was scheduled to be over yesterday, the 29th, but has been extended a couple of days, until the end of this week. Trainers have until the 10th to vacate the facility. However, many of them have left already, and very few will stay until the last day.

Union Dues and Antique Freak both have farms to go to for the winter, so they will continue to be available. I'm not sure about Captain Spaulding, as this is the first time this particular trainer has listed with Exceller.

Shawnee Acres, if there is any way that you could call this trainer before next week, and even just let him know that you are interested in the horse, it would probably be a very good idea. He could also tell you more about how long this guy will be available.

I just heard that the weather is supposed to stink this weekend, so it may lead people to leave early.

If he does give the go ahead I'm really going to need a lot of help - haven't owned a horse in ten years!!!

Is there a track vet that can do a prepurchase exam? I have to believe that there is, but figured I should ask.

Also, if any of the volunteers have anything to say about him, please let me know. PMs are fine.

Americasguest (thanks for the correction) is full of vitality. She definitely looked to me like the athletic type. I liked the way she was put together. I think that she is definitely worth a look. She's only around 15.2, but she's also only 3, so she may grow some more. As always, a vet check is recommended.

And, I love Gramps. He looks so fine, and the trainer does say that he has had experience off the track, you wouldn't have to start right from square one.

Finger Lakes Adoption lists on Petfinder. We also list their horses, if they send us information, and we can get pictures. The two organizations work very closely together, to get as many horses into new homes as possible. If she got the horse from FLTAP there would have been an adoption contract to sign.

While I think your wife would have liked Gramps, I'm glad she found a horse that she liked at the track.

kazaban
Dec. 2, 2005, 07:58 AM
I am not sure about the adoption contract. She did say that the trainers could smell someone looking at horses and she looked for 6 hours and it was hard to bring back only one. You know how wives and horses can be? The only info that I was given was the horses name and how much $ she spent and what a teriffic deal it was. We had the discussion last night about whether she could buy Gramps as well, but I dug in my heals.

Let me know if there is an older boy/girl who has been ridden recently (off track). Although I had not planned on buying another, we may be nixing a deal I made for a horse for my mom due to many lies (from the seller) and possible health issues of the poor mare.

Although we want more than anything to get another rescue, it's going to be tough since my mom is only comfortable on smaller horses 14-15 hh range and would prefer an older/calmer baby due to the fact that she getting back into riding after decades of being away from the sport.

Louise, if there are ANY prospects up there, please please please let me know. Also, if anyone is aware of ANY rescue that would fit the bill here (breed unimportant although she does love arabs! lol) please let me know.

Thanks all!

I just lost my whole post, sigh. Here we go again.

BeastieSlave, I'll have a better feel for what is going on after I get to the track tomorrow. My feeling is that there could very well be a last minute rush of horses needing to be placed. We will have coverage both Saturday and Sunday, so hopefully we can field some of these.

LoneWolf, there are several you might want to consider.

Twisted Tour (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1133230819) is probably younger than what you are looking for, but she is 14.3 and the trainer says that she is calm and sensible.

Gramps (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1132501893) is bigger, but he has the advantage of being started using dressage techniques, he is super quiet, has been trail ridden and is so pleasant.

Don't overlook Antique Freak. (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1122863671) She is only 15.2 and she has been ridden off the track. Plus, she is wide bodied, so your Mom might feel more secure.

There's also Quiver Forever (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=horse&action=display&thread=1128274677) who is 15.2, and quiet and kind.

I'll keep my eyes open tomorrow, also, see if anyone new turns up.

Louise,

Thanks for the info, I had already starting looking at some and realized there may be a good shot at finding a fit! Anyhoo, we will be finding out for sure whether or not we are going to bail out of the deal with this woman (found out she had over 20 horses seized about 9 months ago for abuse/neglect) when the vet pays a visit on either Monday or Tuesday. The woman isn't real thrilled at the idea of having a $1500 horse vetted since this horse is just so cheap http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif - yup, major red flag. Will the track be open the weekend of 10/11? That's when we'd be able to come make the purchase and give me a few days to arrange transport. Oh, and my application has already been approved once so I'm good to go there!

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm kinda hoping the deal winds up in the manure pile since I REALLY want to adopt another baby from there!

Here is his pedigree. (http://www.pedigreequery.com/gigabyte) As you can see, he has some grand old names there. On a thread on the Breeding forum here (http://chronicleforums.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/3206053911/m/196206608/r/969208708#969208708) they mention that he has only eight crosses to Phalaris, and no Mr. P or Raise a Native. that's probably why he is nine, has raced over 60 times, and is still sound.

I was told by the trainer today that he has to find someone to take this horse. He has absolutely no place to take him, once the track closes. I don't know for sure, but that probably means that he will go to the backside buyer, and we all can imagine that an older stallion like this will not fare well at a lower end auction.

We're trying everything we can think of to find this guy a home. Please let there be someone of you out there who can give this guy a home! Call the trainer. I'm very sure that the price will go way, way down, with not too much negotiation.

Oh, Beastie!

I went to sleep last night worried about Miner's Road and trying to figure out where we could put him here. I'm so glad that he may be coming to your farm!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I may have to come and meet him if he comes to you http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Now, surely someone has room for a nice stallion? What are the implications of gelding a 9 year old?

If anyone wants this stallion, I have room available for a short period of time. I hate to think of what may happen to him if we cant find him a safe landing spot. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif

In the meantime I am going to see if I can rearrange my girls here so I have a stall that could possibly be his permanently.

Louise, how soon does he need to be off the track? I will be at the Timonium sale in Maryland tomorrow but will be home by midnite(weather dependent of course)

Norcrest,

I really want Gigabyte, but I'm not sure what's involved with stallion keeping. He's too nice a sport horse sire prospect to geld before he's given a chance to make eventing and jumping babies.

Heck, if there is a breeder out there in a horse hot spot, which my part of Mississippi ain't, who might be interested in standing him, I'd buy him and board him with you. Or I'd go in with anyone on him, just to save him intact.

Gig doesn't deserve to go to a killer. He earned his retirement.

If anyone has a way to get him back to California.. and if the guy would "donate" him to me.. I'd give him a home being a trail horse.

Of course, we could call up one of the retirement farms. There is one here in Tehachapi.. actually 2 of them. I don't know that they take stud horses but then he could be gelded. If he got donated I know that the owner would qualify for a tax break. The 2 farms are United Pegasus & Tranquility Farms. I'll see if I can get ahold of either of them today.

Can someone call the trainer for me and see if the guy would be willing to retire Gigabyte this way?

Thanks

There's no reason in the world that I can see to keep this horse a stallion. In my humble opinion, his pedigree is unremarkable, and his conformation leaves much to be desired. He would have a much easier time of things after the old snip snip. I'm sure he would be a lovely riding horse, but he has a lot fewer options for finding a home with the boys still attached. Good luck Gigabyte--hope you find a nice family to love you!

Ok.. Helen Meredith said that United Pegasus would make a spot for him if someone can get him shipped back to the farm. He just needs a ride to California & whatever purchase price there is on him.

Dec. 3, 2005, 01:29 PM
Ridgetop Ghost, why do you say his pedigree is unremarkable?

http://www.pedigreequery.com/gigabyte

Looks pretty remarkable to me, given that his sire was used in sport horse breeding in Maryland, his female family is better than most in racing, and he has Never Bend, Sailor, Arts and Letters, Royal Statute, and is tail male to War Relic.

What more would you be looking for in a sport horse?

Conformation wise, he's been sound enough to make 63 starts, is very uphill in the one level picture, and has track feet. What flaws are you seeing that I'm not?

Norcrest
Dec. 3, 2005, 01:36 PM
Ridgetop Ghost...why is his pedigree unremarkable?

He is retiring sound after 63 starts, his 1/2 sister is a G3 winner who had a foal sell last year for $130K. His dam is a multiple stakes winner, his sire was a nice sire in Maryland for many many years and his 4th dam is the dam of 2 successful Canadian sires. Add the Never Bend, Arts and Letters ect....I really like him. As for his photo...no offense Louise....but the pictures are not taken as conformation shots but just to give you an idea of what he looks like. Seeing these horses in person is always awesome.

OK, maybe you guys are right. I'm not as familiar with sport horse sires as racing sires. Not to get into an argument over it, but I just don't see him as stallion material. Seems like there are much better-bred horses available coming off the track for a song than this guy--but if you say his daddy is a big sporthorse sire, then maybe I'll just munch slowly on my foot. He sure does go back quickly to some big names, which is hard to find these days.

He just isn't my "type", I suppose, and I don't like his back/topline at all.

Norcrest

Ridgetop...no need to munch http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif Baederwood is an old stallion who was very well respected in the midatlantic region...I remember him well since I was living in MD during most of his stud career. He was an EP Taylor bred horse, who was very good looking and not only did his foals do well as sporthorses, he sired some very nice runners and is the broodmare sire of nice runners in the region as well. His is the sire of Root Boy who was Graded Stakes placed and stood in Western Md (I believe Murmur farm for many years)...he was a nice sire and I have seen many of his foals who are nicely built.

I myself do not know very much about sport horses as I breed to race but have many friends who are always trying to teach me. Out of curiousity I did a search and found that Baederwood was #288 out of 917 sires in 2003 as ranked by the USA Equestrians Leading Sire Ranking so he at least is above the average. I would love to own one of his daughters!

Gigabyte is a handsome devil! He has that old-fashioned, dignified TB head. Nice pedigree and very nice to see 63 starts with a quite respectable $149K in earnings - plus, I noticed his stakes-winning dam had 46 starts to her credit - some real longevity/stamina there.

Louise, when is the absolute last day his trainer will be there, do you know?

Norcrest/Vineyridge - you gonna join forces to stand this beauteous boy? That would be awesome! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Unfortunately, a lot of these guys on the track would be much better off as geldings, in my opinion. However, this guy is a good horse, in a tough position, and he has an unusual pedigree, in this day and age. Those old bloodlines do need to be preserved.

Keep your fingers crossed everyone, because it looks like there is someone who will take him. She just has to contact the trainer and make the arrangements.

Norcrest, if this doesn't work, and he still needs a home, your offer to take him if possible is greatly appreciated. The track closes on December 10th. I don't know how long the trainer will hold this guy, but I would think, that if he knows someone is interested in him, he will hold him until he can be picked up.

Jingle, eveyone, that this guy lands safely. And, if there is anyone out there who is interested in this guy, don't let the fact that there "may" be a taker deter you. You never know until the horse is safely in new hands if the deal is going to go through.

I can personally contribute $100 to help Gigabyte.

It really sucks that The Exceller Fund is low on donations right now because normally we would be able to jump in and help.

But we've been hit with expenses including vets and certain people that insist on charging us premium rates. Needless to say, we are learning who to stay away from.

We still have a week to go on Holiday Horses, and we also have the Rich In Dallas Appreciation Certificates. I am hoping we can start getting donations in soon, because without donations, there is little The Exceller Fund can do.

Good news everyone! The wonderful woman from here in New York state has made arrangements to pick up Gigabyte from the trainer. She is doing this out of the goodness of her heart, and is even picking up another stallion that was a difficult placement at the same time. We may need your help, later on, in finding a home for one or the other of these guys. However, they are now in a safe place, with people who will care for them. I thank her so much for all her help. She doesn't post on COTH, but on another BB that I frequent, the pedigreequery board, under the name of windham. I know that all of you COTHers who have offered to step up for this guy join me in feeling the joy in knowing that there are caring people like her, and all of you, out there.

Yes, the other stallion was Run Baron Run. I'm so glad that he is safe and sound also.

Captain Spaudling is still looking for a home. He has Broad Brush and Ack Ack in his pedigree, both of which, according to someone I know, were horses who produced wonderful steeplechasers. I wonder if that would mean that they might be good eventers too?

He's only four, young enough to be gelded.

He's big, he's kind and he is just the biggest goofusbaby in the world. He just loves people, had his face poking at me the whole time I was standing there talking to the sponsor (he's a FLTAP horse). He just couldn't get enough of being loved on.

Somebody has to take this horse. Crikey, he's only two and he's already at least 16.2. As always, a vet check is recommended.

Awww man! I can't help myself. It's a sickness....

I just got off the phone with Bama Brae & Blarney Stream's trainer. He was sooo nice to talk to. I called because BB looks like a mare I had a million years ago. She was a flake, but I loved that mare so I had to call. Trainer said the filly is not happy at the track, but is VERY mellow at the farm. He said she's one of the quietest gals he's known (said she'd be a great kid's horse). I mentioned how that really appealed to me and he started in about Blarney Stream. He said that BS (lol) was VERYVERY quiet and mellow and his very favorite to work with. When I told him of the possibility of trail rides and kids on board, he felt that both of these horses would be very good candidates for that kind of life. He said they were both way to mellow to be racehorses even though they have both had their moments of swiftness.

If you are looking for a quiet horse check these out. The trainer is full up at the farm and wants to find a place for them because the track closes this weekend. He didn't sound desperate or anything, but I could tell he'd rather not have them at the farm. He also mentioned that he'd he'd be happy to help find reasonable shipping south.

So it's not too late!! You guys go look again http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The trainer who has Bama Brae and Blarney Stream is a very nice guy. Both of these horses are very nice, and would fit nicely in anyone's barn. And, this trainer has been around the track for quite a while, so he knows who is going where, and should be able to get you a good deal on shipping.

As an aside, this trainer is the originator of the funniest remark we heard all season. One of the other trainers at the track has a pet duck, who has been a fixture at the track for a number of years. One day we were walking down the road, and this duck was in front of us. He was hustling but good. That waddle was mighty quick. Bama Brae's trainer was coming in the other direction. He stopped, looked at the duck hurrying along and said "That duck is faster than most of my horses." I think cgn38 and I were still laughing five minutes later.

Deb413, I'm glad Flag Tower is doing well. I think you're right up the road from where I board my girl. Maybe I'll stop by some night on my way to the barn and visit him.

The track is closing this Saturday. When I was there last Saturday, practically everyone had left. The only ones who stay until the last are those who board. They don't move until they absolutely have to, to save board money. Interesting thing that I never realized is that most places that board race horses charge by the day, not by the month.

Chocolate Kwik is a Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program horse. From what I hear, he has a small chip in the right hind. Radiographs will be available if anyone is interested in this guy. And, I sure hope someone is. It's been a week since I have seen him, and I'm still drooling. This is the biggest, cutest baby you would ever want to see. Whoever gets him will have a friend and a buddy for life.

We won't be going down to the track this weekend. When I checked last weekend, everyone was settled as to what they were doing. I also checked for stray pets, and didn't see any. Apparently everyone does a good job of picking them up and taking them home for the winter.

We had a good year, especially since it was our first full one. We are tallying now, and will give you a report on how many horses were placed shortly. I think its going to be an impressive number.

Thanks so much to all of you wonderful COTH members. I know that we wouldn't have been nearly as successful if it wasn't for your help and support. The board will remain active during the winter, and I know that last winter I got a few calls to come take pictures at farms, so there may be additions. So, keep looking and dreaming, and I'm sure that, one day, your perfect horse will be looking back at you from the screen.

Louise/CGN,

As the race meet has closed for the Fingerlakes, I want to THANK YOU (and your other volunteers, I know there's several others) for the dedication and work (yes, it really is like another job) you've done by traveling to the track through the weekdays (when needed) and on your weekends.

I will never forget the day last year, after having visited the killpen and seeing upwards of 25 ottbs standing there, the complete frustration and the NEED to do more for these horses. It's never an easy task, but a solid foundation has been laid and I'm so very happy that you (Louise/CGN) were there this year to continue the work. You have my HEARTFELT thanks, the committment and dedication shown by your actions is exemplary and the horses are fortunate to have you 'on their side'. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

This success cannot be counted by numbers alone - it's also the satisfaction of knowing you've done all you can, in every situation, to make the life for any horse a pleasant transition to retirement off the track.

My thanks for all you've done!

Marli, thank you so much for those kind words. The movement that you started last year has grown so much, and we thank you for having the vision and the courage to see what needed to be done, and to actually go out and do something about it.

This is the first Saturday in quite some time that I have not been at the track. I'm rattling around the house, wondering what to do with all my free time. OK, so I know that later on I'm cleaning out the cupboard under the sink that a pesky mouse recently decided to make his home, but I'm trying not to think of that.

As I rattle, I think of all the people, and all of the horses that I have met over the past meet. So many lovely horses that have found new homes, and a few that we tried, but could not place in time. Those that we failed will live in our hearts and minds, and in the determination that, next year, there will be fewer of them.

And, so many people; those who went out of their way to help the horses at Finger Lakes, either by purchase or by donating to the Exceller Fund; those who train and own horses that run at the track that were so grateful that we were offering them another outlet to try and place the animals that they had come to know, love and respect; and, unfortunately, a few who could care less.

We have a good foothold now, and hope very much that, next year, we will do better. And, on that note let me end with a list of horses that we learned this week were placed.

Just wanted to point out that not every horse that left the track(or farm for that matter) was `lost` there are others including myself that have been finding homes for Finger Lakes horses for many years. Topside- Concern, Broad Bush, Ack Ack/ Damside- Roberto, My Babu and look at all the Olympia! His appearance ( Captain Spaulding (http://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1133141821) ) reflects his breeding, nice young stallion! Sure hopes he finds a partner to 'call his own'! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Long time lurker here who would like to thank all those involved in bringing the Exceller program to light in this area .

We found our new addition through the listings and could not be happier. Trainer helped arrange local shipping and whole process was pretty pleasant.

Thanks again for all your efforts. It is uplifting to see those who are making a difference in these horses lives and to those who take them in...

Thanks Marli

I agree he is nicely bred. I like the older bloodlines myself. I should be getting better pics in a week or so if we ever get Sun!
