It's not that they aren't popular...they are just uncommon...
For example, the two horses that are turned out with my horse are named Sabby and Taj. If you way the two names fast, it sounds like "sabotage".
Other uncommon ones:
Siggy
Tickles
Dragon (maybe?)
Gunner
Funny (as in Funny Cide...btw, if you can get your hands on the book "Funny Cide", it's a good read...all about the horse and Sakatoga Stables)

Personally, I think my friend's horse has an unusual name: Cosa. It's Spanish for "thing". Her registered name is Cosa de Ver, which means "A Thing to See".
I dare you to name a horse "Thing".

I have two fillies named "Cali" and "Fifi". Also have a gelding named "Sparky".

She kept his name. I also have had a LOVELY gorgeous beautious grey I named Swank, it so fit him he was such a snob. Can't think of any more original ones right now, my brain hurts.

From a old camp horses:

-- Decent (TWH mare; registered as Indecent Proposal...what else you gonna call her?)
-- Fish (old QH who paddled something awful)

My dad called her Knockers.
I was too young to get it. Years later, long after we found her a happy home, I had one of those "ohhhhhh" moments.

Phaxxton
Aug. 18, 2005, 05:49 AM
Well, my arabian's barn name is "Phaxxton" (pronounced "Paxton").
My other guy is Joey - not an unusual name at all, but I never met another horse named Joey (I still don't think Joey counts as unusual).
I had a painted who's barn name was "Bash" - for Sebastian.
I also used to ride a mare named Castano (Spanish for "brown").

So my BM breaks race horse babies so they don't really have names when they come to her. Recently she has named some only in the past few months:
Snerd
Moose
Dorf
Red Rat
Bessie
Poor horses are probably looking forward to their registered names!

snap i think i like your trainer!
some old ones from camp:
why not (purchased from a slaughter auction, camp director said 'why not')
waldo (which isn't funny in itself, but waldo and why not are best friends, and are never w/out each other, so you'd get used to saying waldo and why not, and one day linzi, a girl i worked with, called them wydo and wal-nuts...which stuck...)
my best friend when i was younger had a palomino gelding whos name was Dam#it...yep...so she'd go out the the field and yell "come here ...."
we had a colt at my barn a few years ago and he was, well, a little 'slow'...and crooked when he came out (which turned out to be because he's HUGE now) - but i started calling him Tardo...and it stuck...oops

I recall showing against a rider who was atop a horse named "Read The Will."
Also during the 70s when Neil Sedaka was big, a gal showed her horse, "Laughter In The Rain." People rolled their eyes on that one.

Can I play too?
L'il Evil (She was an independent little cuss and rotten to her dam)
E-2 (L'il Evil's sister, and I couldn't think of anything to call her)
Tink (He came with the name- he wore a bell as a foal because his dam was blind)
Vanna Banana (Had a banana shaped star as a baby, and Vanna rhymed)
Glow in the Dark (Palomino - Vanna Banana was scared of the "Glow in the Dark" baby- the name stuck)
Pony Thing (Grade mare I never liked well enough to give a real name)
Homer (Kinda short for Homely- he wasn't a pretty baby)
All the rest have "normal" names.

My friend, Patty Peckham, had a horse that she kept at our house when we were both teenagers.
His name was Neibon, which is Japanese for "Second".
He came with that name, an nobody knoew WHY. She tried several times to change it, but the new name never "stuck" and he stayed Neibon.
I have never heard of another one.

Too funny I as well have a horse named Chef! I purchased him from Canada where Chef is french for "Chief"; thus "Chef" being an english word I kept it! My mom named my TB (without my approval) Simon Sez, and called him Simon. Fine for a pony, not a Junior Hunter prospect. So I started calling him Goose and it stuck. He'd only respond to Goose, that really got back at her.
Other unique but not bad:
Yale (Gorgeous bay Arabian)
Cru (reg. Grand Cru)
Very (I have no idea where it came from)
Mariah
Lollipop (TWH mix the sweetest old thing)
Binkie (His original name was Rocky, but since my horse was Rocky and mine was at the barn longer my trainer made his owners switch it... to Binkie)
Mutant (ugh... he was a freak of nature)
T-Two (no idea)
Scandal
Touche

Well, my old show hunter, that I have leased out is named Thistle. It's the name he came with, and I have NO idea how he got it.
When I went to camp at Valley View Ranch, there was this pony named Taco. he was, well...had the colors of a Taco, lol.
My pony is named Happy Anniversary - Happy for short - because we found her in our front yard just a few days before our first wedding anniversary.
Some of the barn names we gave the Racehorses were pretty funny:
Strawberry - by Strawberry Road
Yum-Yum
Turkey
(those were all during our "food" theme)
Paycheck
Mr. Brady - his owner was, yup - Mr. Brady
John Boy - he was a BIG 17.2 hands and very clumsy.
LuAnne - my husband named that one, after the ditsy girl on King Of The Hill.
Otis - another one of my husband named horses, lol.
Bubba Doo - was really his reg. named, lol.
Waffles - I think his Reg. name was Leggo My Eggo or something like it.
Sing Moon - was her Reg. name, so thats what we called her.
My trainer's daughter has a pony - just went to the pony finals in the smalls - who's barn name is Pookie (his show name is Check Me Out)

Andalusian Colt is Booger - his real name is Falcao
RugBug

Haven't met another horse named "Show" in all my years. Maybe because people were smart enough to think of how idiotic you sound saying "Show did well at the show" and such. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif
But then again, I think I get the benefits of some positive self-talk when I always call him "Show pony." He certainly can't be confused on what he is supposed to be. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We've had some barn names for the TB race babies too:
* The Good
* The Bad
* The Ugly - 3 2 year olds who came in together to be backed - matched their names)
* Twisted Sisters (same situation as above - MAN they were crazy!)
A lot of them are called by their owners name (often not in front of the owners though http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. We've had Oscar and Oscarina because of that. Tommy Boy, Bobby etc.
* Linus - an orphan foal
* Guillotine - ended up being his registered name - he would slam you into walls and flip over on a dime. Scary black colt.
* Chester the Molester - a chestnut weanling colt who was always trying to strike and bite
* Doors - a filly who spooked everytime you went by a door
* Bert - a nickname of one of the stallions
* Chubby Hubby - registered name of one of the stallions
* Flying Porker - registered name of a very skinny TB gelding (dam was Miss Piggy). Never did gain weight. He is now a 20+ school/show horse and the name stuck.
* Funny Bunny - a TB I remember from when I was a kid. He could really jump!
* Toodles - our 10h pony who came with that nuckname. Registered name is August Suncatcher
* Jeffrey - my Irish Draught who was nicknamed Jeffrey (or Geoffrey which is a pain to spell) because he looked like a giraffe as a yearling. i also call him Forest Gump at times. His registered name is O.H. Diamond Drop.

Just about everyone on my farm has an "s" name, and in that tradition, I've given the babies barn names that fit that tradition.
Squeaky-2005 1/2 Welsh filly who does "squeak" when she runs around.
Shorty-2005 WB/TB cross colt that is going to be huge.
Stump-2004 TB gelding who wasn't too bright when he was born, but is very cute and loveable.

When I was a junior, I used to show a horse for some people that was named "Bucket" because the previous owner had him in a field, and when they wanted to catch him they'd get a bucket with some grain and got out and say "Bucket!" Well, the horse learned to come to the name Bucket, so it stuck. They even showed him as Bucket in A shows.
When I taught in Santa Barbara, one of the kids had a horse named "Barfly" -- not a normal name for a kids horse...

When I was a kid doing saddleseat, I rode an old schoolmaster named "Dingbat". He was a saint and didn't deserve that name.
My recently departed old TB was named "Catch A Plenty". What kind of name is that? We called her "Plenty". According to my hubby that was as in 'Plenty of horses'!
Had a TB as a kid who went by "Piglet" for obvious reasons.
The big guy was known as "Stupie"....that's the affectionate version of 'stupid'. We called his crocheted earnet that kept those pesky bugs out of his ears, his stupie hat!
Of coures, "The Heifer" has a real name, but "Heifer" suits her. She's such a cow!
I love "Stark Naked"!! That's too funny http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Well we have a 2 year old filly at our barn taht one of the other boarders named Jailbird. A new lady bought her and tried to change her name to Scarlett but most of us still call her jailbird. My old trainer had a school pony named Bubble Gum and one named Nick. Plus at one point we had Callie and Kallie Kay and yes she was always called Kallie Kay. It was the only way for someone to know which horse you were talking about.

We had a pony named Ducky (as in Ugly Duckling), which actually turned out kinda cute.
Then there was the long stirrup horse in our barn named Neckstrap. I'm not kidding. The woman who had him before us used to ride with a strap around his neck to hang on to. I was a teenager at the time and piped up, "Let's call him Neckstrap." It stuck... poor horse. Of course, there were times when it was shortened to Strap.

I've heard legendary stories from our old-time horse friends who had named one Double Ugly (barn name - he was nicknamed at 2 y.o.). 2 years later, he was the nicest looking horse on the place - a very nice backyard breeding/training facility whose horses usually ended up competing in Open Jumpers. They still called him Ugly.

a few from work
Ping
Primus
Radar...Biggest ears on a horse, ever!
my old trainer's mare is named Pungo (her breeder named all her foals after small towns in virginia).
I also had a pony named "Crispi" who we would affectionatly call "Crusty"
at school we had one named Pirate...he was missing a front tooth so they wanted to change his name to "Hick" but i don't think it ever happened.

My mom bought a horse named Sid. We renamed him Heffalump, or Heff for short--not much of an improvement but it did kind of fit him (think large, large-headed, mostly grey appy). She subsequently bought a Sadat, a name we kept.
One of our student workers owned a stallion named Wanker.
I've never met another Cool, but it seems like that it would be more common.
Some of the German names are just plain long and too hard to pronounce on a daily basis; fortunately, most of them get shortened. Lichtblick (sp?) is one that hasn't, as of yet.
And why is it that the smallest child with the smallest pony will give said pony the longest name?

When I was young, there was a kid at the barn who had a pony named "Jesus Loves Me" - his barn name was "Christian." The pony was then purchased by a Jewish family, who promptly changed the name!
Some other unusual names of barn-mates were: Rhino, Fling, Marmaduke, and Whatchamacallit.

My mare's name is Ivanna. She's a Trakehner... Never heard that one before... and yes, it's her registered name. And it fits her so well... she is very much a Diva and Prima Donna... so of course, we have Ivanna the Prima Donna. LOL But the reason behind her name is that the baby has to be named with the first letter of the dam's name. Ivanna's dam is Incantation. But I call her "V" to help incorporate her sire in there... his name was Veneziano.
My first horse (gelding) as a teen was Whistle. His registered name was Whistle on By. He was a TB cross.
An old boyfriend of mine when I was in high school... his grandfather had a cat named Cat. He said, why bother naming something that doesn't come when you call it... and he was right, the cat never came to you no matter what you called him. LOL
In college, some of our school horses were:

The Children's Hunter that I leased as a junior came with the barn name of "Squash" and the show name "Calavares". Squash possibly because of his funny brown/green dunn color like the inside of the vegetable (I kid you not almost the color of TS breeches for his summer coat) or maybe because he was big enough to squish his riders if he felt like it. I was told that Calavares is Spanish for "bones" or skeleton" (he was supposedly an Argentinian TB).
Strange barn/show names, but a very cool horse.

I think I can beat all of these names. My horse is called T-Bone. His stripe on his face looks like a T-Bone out of a T-Bone steak. And becuase I am one that believes changing names is bad (the last horse whose name I changed, bucked me off the next day), I've shortened his name to Bones. However, when grocery store ads come on advertising steaks for sale, my horse's price is calculated on the hoof http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif And no, the name on his papers is nowhere close to T-Bone. Poor guy, I really think the only thing worse could be Alpo. I also used to know a very ugly appy school horse named Plugsly.

Came home from a farm with a 2 year old called "Boner". This will truly teach me not to ask questions of people who are trying to speak quietly. While we were horse shopping at that farm, I heard them saying to get that 2 year old out. The groom said, "Who, Bon" very quick interuption from barn owner and quiet conversation between BO and groom. Dummy me, had to ask. Seems the colt used to mount the round bales of hay in the field and they gave him the nickname of Boner. We really try not to still call him that, but the more you say it, the less dirty it sounds.

17 hand grey mare came with "Gentle Wolf" more uuugggg. She is now the very unoriginal Dutchess.

One of our STB goes by his full registered name, Feather Bret. Another named Bedondaine is known around the barn as BeDawn.
We have a TB known affectionately as Conrad... his registered name is Commander Hall and when we got him my friend could not remember his name and kept calling him Conrad, so it stuck...
We leased a camp horse in the winter who was called P-Bar after his brand... I think it sounds like a place you would go to drink urine http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif
We have also had a Burrito, Walter, Pet, and Adrienne, all of which I think are rather unique.

Oh let's see. I used to board right next to a reining stallion named "Bimbo Two". Also, there was a TB racer named Dirty Old Man (I think he was a stakes winner too) I rode a school horse named Bonkers. And then there was my favorite (person's name changed to protect the not so innocent) "Shelly's Fat Ass" Who was a skinny rescue donkey that we lovingly named shelly's fat ass after my friend shelly the owner tried EVERYTHING to make him gain weight (shelly not her real name)

I'd bet her sire has Pavi or something similar, and since she was a filly they were relatively uncreative and added elle to the end. Just guessing.
