Lianne, et al...
I am amazed by the evolution of many breeds in this country. For example, the first imported European Warmbloods that I am aware of being in my area were Preussengeist, a Trahkenher, and Abundance, a Hanoverian. Most Trak folks that I have chatted with would rather not even acknowledge Preussengeists' existence, and Abundance is probably best known for the hunters he threw- he was crossed on a lot of TB mare is those days, particularly by his owner, Al Steiert.
Back then, most of the warmbloods I saw showing were the "stump-puller" type- great big boned horses with huge feet and generally very large plain heads. The lacked elegance and quality, and were the forerunners of the lighter, breedier warmbloods of today.
The ASB went through dramatic changes with the huge use of Valley View Supreme, and his sons, primarily Supreme Sultan, in the show horse world. From great big boned, maybe a little plainer headed, broad, deep horses with great stamina and bone- the pendulum went to produce many of the defects- while trying to refine a smaller gene pool- that we see today.
There are plusses too. Elegance, tractability, brilliance- but like anything else, you have to look at what you are doing, not breed willy nilly.
Around here, we have a whole lot of half-warmbloods, out of many types of mares. There are a whole lot of what I have heard one European call "pukes". http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif The breeders of these horses start with a mare that they have some fun with, and decide she would make a great mommy. No testing, no brand, maybe papers, but who knows (and does it matter ?). So, garbage in, garbage out. And another happy person who claims that their foal is by **Braunscwhager**
My point is, that while every horse deserves a wonderful home, there are many who were literally ill-conceived, with or without papers, or, frankly, a brand. I think you can get most reasonably correct horses approved as SOMETHING, given the right day. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
