It's about MtDNA variations and performance. The part that makes it applicable to eventers is how distance capabilities are affected.

It isn't useful in particulars, because the author has a business doing TB evaluations pre breeding, so there are very few specifications. Unless you could test a potential purchase or mare for MtDNA type, you really couldn't use the article's findings. But they are still interesting.

Genetic studies of descent through the maternal line is always done with mitochondrial DNA, since it's passed to progeny in the ovum. So there isn't any reason to claim that his studies are needed to support that notion.
Of course the weakest part of anything like this is trying to judge raw metabolic potential from race results. But then, as a businessman, the only interest is in trying to link it with winning.
