Butts Leon FEI Record Question

I noticed this a while ago and was curious to the rationale.

In 2005 and 2006 (Butts was 8 then) he alternated between contesting CIC1* and CIC3*s. I would have expected him to move between CIC3* and CIC2*s possibly but why the gap? Just interested me.

I have no idea about his particular circumstances, but riders will do this sometimes with young/green horses. The Prelim level is a good one for keeping them forward-thinking and keeping their confidence up, but at the same time the jumps are big enough the keep their attention.
