My 19 year old son died this morning (short update, p. 37, Alex continues to touch lives)

I found him dead in his bed when I went to get him up for Christmas. We don't know what happened. THe medical examiner has taken his body. The police have been here and left. His birthday was yesterday. He just turned 19.

His name was Alexander Eugene Rawles.

Thank you everyone. The police came right behind the paramedics. Bill & I performed CPR until they got here (only 5 minutes) but we pretty much knew before they got here that it was beyond hope. We don't know what happened but the medical examiner took his body. They have to treat it as a crime because he died under mysterious circumstances.

The police officer said he had investigated many deads & he personally thought from what he saw that Alexander died of natural causes.

I signed on to complain about spending the morning in the ER with the flu. However, my Christmas troubles pale in comparison to yours. After reading your post, I have much more appreciation for the fact that, even though most of my Christmas Day was spent in the ER with a 103 degree fever, at least it was spent with my family. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Though I don't know you, your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I know it will be little consolation, but I hope the medical examiner can shed some light on this tragedy so you are not left forever wondering how. Alexander did not have any known health problems. The police did *not* find drug paraphenalis when they search his room & his car, nor did they find drugs or alcohol.

I last saw him about 1:30 AM when his girlfriend left. He escorted her out to her car. She pretty much always met him here, drove herself here, although he was on good terms with her family & her family liked him. He & I spoke for a minute & then he went up to bed & I went to bed. He was as right & normal as a person could be.

We didn't know what to do today so we went & got a load of hay & went to the barn & did what we always do - feed horses, clean stalls, etc. I often get all my hay in the summer but this year I didn't & we are just getting it now. Picking it up one truckload at a time & bringing it to our barn to stack. We just couldn't sit at home looking at each other & crying.

I am in the same boat as you. Lost my only child, a son, age 24, 8 years ago - sometimes it seems as if it was only last year. There is nothing I can say to make you feel better, or to fill the emptiness that must be in your heart right now, only God can do that. I know talking about God on a public message board may not be the smartest thing, but He is the only way we can ever get through times like this. He is there for you, and always will be. I hope you are able to find some comfort knowing that there are so many out there praying for you and your family. I leave you with His words:

I am so sorry about Alexander. Some years ago, my brother died suddenly, at age 27. He was at the wheel of his car, stopped at a red light. He just never drove on. We never found a "real" cause of death.

This is a very painful time, I know, for you and your family. It took us all, especially my mother, years to be able to speak about him without tears. But, this peace will come to you too, in its own time, and you will remember him with joy as well as sadness.
