I am seriously giving thought to moving to J'ville, FL. First, I want to know about boarding in the area...cost, trainers, etc...

Second, I'd like to know what kind of local circuit they have there...what can I expect?

Thanks for any and all help!

BTW, I also posted this in Off Course...just trying to get info from as many people as possible! Moderators, if this is a problem, delete one of them... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I can't tell you about any barns in Jacksonville. But they do have some good shows up there. Do a seach on North Florida Hunter Jumper Association and you can see a list of some of the shows they have there. Summers are always slow here in Florida, but fall, winter, and spring you can find shows every weekend. Gainesville and Ocala, both big horse areas, are only a couple hours from JAX. Hope this helped a little.

Try this site for Orlando non-rated shows. There is also links to other organization that can help you with your search.

I live in Jax. I also work at the large tack store here. I talk to a lot of people from different barns.

If you are looking for a higher end h/j show barn, they run anywhere from $500-700ish a month.

I board at a smaller non show barn for $400 a month.

We have the First Coast Hunter Jumper Association, which is I believe B rated shows. Its very laid back and FUN! Then we have the Norht Florida Hunter Jumper Assoc which are the A rated shows. We also have various other shows at the fairgrounds and are within a good distance to many other shows. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Let me know if you have any specific questions and Ill see what I can find out for you.

I live in the Jacksonville area. Green Cove actually, where most of the shows are held. Around here, you can find board from $275 for relative backyard type boarding, (but with good care) to 4-500, and some of that is terrible care, so it really depends on how picky you are. As far as trainers, if you find one that is truly decent, with good background knowledge, and true show experience, Let me know. I'd love to find them as well.
The show circuits here are decent, there is the North Florida one that hosts the Jacksonville WInter Series, and a couple of other rated shows in the fall.
The first Coast circuit does not have rated shows, but the shows they have are excellent quality. Both associations hold their shows at the Clay County fairgrounds, so it gets kind of boring showing at the same place all of the time, but Gainesville and Ocala aren't too far away to go to for overnight shows. Overall, I lvoe the area, but really would like to find a good trainer!

Jacksonville is sort of an odd place for the horse world. It is a great area to live with lots going on and a lot of opportunity, but the horse world is 10 years behind the rest of the country. You can find places to board, but not great trainers. You can find terrible places to board, too!

The winter circuit is pretty nice and some years has great competition, but it is not usually local trainers. The First Coast shows are run really well, but not B rated as someone mentioned. The North Florida shows are also well run, but except for a few long term Jacksonville residents, the people who win are from out of the area.

What is it about Jacksonville? It is a prosperous area and ideal for horses, but it does not have top trainers. If you are from out of town, you will be horrified by some of the boarding situations. There are some nice barns with $$$ monthly board and I found most of those had long waiting lists. I was told at one place you had to be out of the barn by 6 at night. Hmmm, not good for working people. And the barn was closed EVERY Sunday, so don't make show plans (let alone ride) on Sundays!

It is a really weird horse area. I would have probably stayed in the area if I could have had a better horse experience.

I guess I'm looking more for a good boarding stable as opposed to trainers...

I'm mostly concerned with proper care as opposed to training....good feed, turn-out, etc...

Once I begin showing again, I'll get someone reputable to coach me at the shows... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We have a good thing going at my barn. I am on the southside area of Jacksonville, at Can Do Farm in Mandarin. Its $400 for a stall and turn out, no extra fees for supplements or blanketing, etc. 12x12 stalls, etc etc. PM me if you are interested and I could show you around! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm in the Jacksonville area and board my horse @ a private barn in Switzerland (Switzerland, Florida that is - located just south of Jax in St. John's County!)

I'm not sure what you're looking for in a trainer and what level of showing you're interested in. I work with two trainers here and I think the world of both of them. Jane Steen and Robin Harris are both great - please feel free to PT me for info!

Perhaps we need to consider a COTH BB'er meeting in Jax?????

Feel free to PT if there's any info you'd like! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll join you guys. I second the Robin Harris/ Jane Steen recommendation. A lot depends on whether you want a fancy hunter/jumper show barn or dressage or more of a private, low key boarding situation. Let us know when you are coming and we meet if possible.

I'm up for a jax meeting. Does living in Brunswick count? I boarded at Coriander Farm in Mandarin. Great care. Great help. Saul is the best help around. No grass turnout, but big stalls. They go usually to the N. Florida Shows, the rated Jax, Ocala, Gainesville, and even Tampa. The owner is Katie Young. Megan Young, who is a very good junior rider, is in her last junior year. She has a trainer that teaches most of the lessons because she (Katie) is on the road either with Megan or judging (big R). She helps at the shows though. Lots of nice people there. I think they only have training board which is $825, I think. It's a lot, but it includes three rides or lessons a week.

There is an absolutely gorgeous facility not far away on Old St. Augustine Road. I don't know what it's called or who owns it though. I think the ride with Don Stewart (meet him at shows) but I'm not sure.

Let me know about the Jax COTH getogether.

J. Turner - Of course living in Brunswick counts! Come on down & play!

As far as the great place on Old St. Augustine Road, you're probably thinking of Three Fillies. I haven't been there since the current owners purchased and improved the property but I do lust after it every time I drive by!

Pacificsolo, let us know when you'll be in town (and what part of town you'll be staying in) and we'll meet up and have a few refreshments and talk horses. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is southpoint hunt club still there?

Ok lets see, I'm in Jax too on the NW side, so count me in for the meeting. I also have room for a boarder at my house. I'm an ex A show rider and provide quality care. My personal email is gunner5928@hotmail.com.
Andrew Lustig is no longer in the area, he is the coach for the equestrian team at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Waddy has left also and disappeared. Dogwood Farm has been sold and they are building condos there. Windemere is also gone I believe. And Dexter is gone too I was told. Don't know Yvonne Barker, maybe Yvonne Bryant? Southpoint hunt club gone too.
I agree the care goes from ratty, to backyardy marginal, to really good to excellent, but the prices charged don't necessarily reflect the care. You get either the rednecky stuff or show quality, we don't have alot in the middle here. I boarded up until a year ago when we got our own place. And my place is at home, but I provide show horse care if that's what you want, as do alot of other people. As far as the boarding barns, you just really have to look for yourself, because one persons' acceptable care may not be yours. I'm pretty picky about clean stalls, ventilation, clean buckets fresh hay, and stuff like that. Some people aren't. And I like the barn owner/manager to be knowlegable about injuries, wrapping, poulticing and stuff like that. So email me if you want to come look , and count me in for the meeting

Hmmm that might have been Kim. She is the girl who works there all the time. I just started working there lke 3-4 wks ago. I have short hair, sometimes wear a visor, and have some curves to me! Its Five Fillies, and its beautiful. I stopped in there once before they put the gate up to inquire about boarding. The place is gorgeous. And it is $600 a month to board there. And they are very picky. You pretty much have to be a student of their trainers, who is Don Stewart I believe. Don't get me wrong they were very nice, but it is their private farm so they pick and choose who comes in and out. And Slave4tucker is right, Windemere is still around but mostly western and alot of turnover so I don't think that bodes well either. But there are alot of places out there, check www.flahorse.com (http://www.flahorse.com) and www.horsesinthesouth.com (http://www.horsesinthesouth.com) also

its called Five Fillies Farm.its one of the barns that i ride at, though my horse is in Ocala. its a GORGEOUS facility (all day grass turnout, huuuge ring and GP field, 2 ponds, big stalls, wide isles and a full kitchen with showers, and a birthing stall inside). Don Stewart and Pat Vogtle come down every other week or something to teach lessons, and the girls train with them at shows. they also just got a new barn manager, Anne, who is awesome and teaches lessons when pat or don cant get out. the board is about $700

thats not true at all. there are a few people who board their horses there who train with an outside trainer and not Don. not even everyone who rides there shows, and certainly they take clients other than the A circuit riders. the group there is very tight, and everyone works very hard there. i rode there for 6 months and im going back at the end of this month, although i dont think they have any available stalls left, it is certainly worth a shot because they are not overly-selective about their clients at all.

Pacifsolo, go see Jaegermonster's place. it is very nice and we could all ride together. I am just around the corner. I had my horse with her for a while, while we were putting up the fence. Turner, I was supposed to work this Sat and have next Sat off, but it got switched. Kim and April will be working this Sat, though I will probably stop by with a friend of mine.

Tucker, yes that was probably Kim. Though with your horse being named Tucker, I believe I was the one who rung you up the other day, if that was you. Your friend bought a western saddle, correct? And you have blonde hair? And put up a new sign for Horse Sitting (had to hand write the phone # on the paper?) I believe that was you!

Well I stand corrected about Five Fillies. I went out there while they were still working on it and it was a couple of years ago now, so maybe with the management changes there have been some other procedural changes as well. But it is a beautiful farm and the people were very nice. Even if they had rolled out the red carpet for me they are way too rich for my blood there http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif, I could never afford that kind of money for board. As much as sacrifice for my horses, I have to eat too.

Yup lots of hunting in sunny FL. If I remember correctly there are at least four recognized hunts in FL. Our hunt is a drag hunt due to our territories, but all the others are live. But it is still a blast even though it's drag, and we always love to have guests, and share our sport.

Somehow this struck me as funny "But it is still a blast even though it's drag" (I did read it's a drag - funny how the mind works) I can probably arrange a beach ride if its sat or sun the 10 or 11th. Tell me you are thinking early evening to avoid crowds and heat. I've only been to Mickler's landing but do you guys usually do Fernandina? That would probably be closer for the south Ga bunch.

Desilu, that's funny you read it that way, I kinda meant that way, to be funny and play on the words, but it's true it's a blast. I usually go to Fernandina to the beach, the parking seems to be better and less crowded, and also is way closer for me, and I agree for the Georgia People. Sunday July 11 would be really good for me if we decide to go in the morning, I usually go early early but we can do it late too if everybody wants. If we do it in the evening I can do it on Sat the 10 also.
And Velveteen Horse, you should come too. There has to be a first time for everything, and he can hang with my mare for confidence, she loves the beach. They usually really like it.

The Velveteen Horse
Jun. 24, 2004, 07:43 PM
Well, we took him to Bayard and encountered a wild mama pig with babies! The only thing that kept him trembling in place with his heart racing was that fact that Desilu's mare wasn't quite ready to leave yet and he wasn't leaving without her http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif! So... maybe waves crashing all around would be okay, you never know. I am trying to desensitize him, but I do have three kids to raise and don't wish to die.

Krazymare, our opening meet is the last weekend in October. It usually is a catered breakfast (about $25 each) after the hunt, and we have alot of pomp and ceremony, it really is an experience not to be missed. Let me know if you want to come, I'll talk to our Jt.MFH and make it official. If you want to bring a horse capping fee is usually $50. I would not recommend bringing a horse that has never hunted to Opening Meet. Maybe to some cubbing or a less "busy" meet..check out our website it has all the info about joining and costs, what you need, attire, etc.

Velveteen you are too funny!....the beach in Fernandina is very wide and you have tons of room to get away from any water or horse eating boogaloos that should show themselves. Seriously, both of mine and slave4tuckers horse have all been to the beach lots and he can hang with them for comfort. Don't underestimate him I bet he will surprise you.

Where in Fernandina are you planning to ride,Peters Point[we can't go on the beach in the daytime,I think we are allowed on after 5pm or before 8am.Either way the tide will be half way out, which is quite nice.

Or at the southern tip of Amelia,I don't think there are any restrictions down there, except for # of riders in the group.

Obviously you must have your "Coggins"with you.

fernie fox
Jun. 25, 2004, 06:46 AM
Thinking a little more about this,I think Peters point would be great,we could bring a snack to share after our ride, there are picnic benches near the horsey parking,SOs could walk on the beach.

I usually go to Peters Point, I don't think we can go to the south end of the island due to the park concession stable that does horse rentals. I've never had a problem with time or anything, but I usually am there by 8 or so and done by about 10 to avoid the heat so there's not too many people by then.

We are NOT allowed on the beach in the daytime at Peters Point.

I like the 5pm idea since early am will be hard for me to get my act in gear early enough. I think it will take me about 1-1/2 hours to get up there but I will definitely need directions. Velveteen - we'll need a big ole trailer along with the BAT to get sweet Indy up there but now wouldn't that be interesting. Maybe we should haul Cody's butt up there http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Sarah - are you game?

I would like to come, I think I would be able to get there. Depending on the type of ride everyone wants to do, I will decide which of my horses to bring. I am pretty sure I would have a trailer to get there, but would only be able to do it if there would be someone not riding for my husband to hang out with, as I ams still nursing my baby, and wouldn;'t be able to leave him too long, but it sounds fun to me!

Ok then Sunday PM it is for the beach ride. KrazyTBMare, I know our JtMFH often has lease horses available and some of our members sometimes do too, we would have to look into it if you are interested. Definitely the first time or so you come you should ride in the truck and observe what goes on so you have a clue. It usually is pretty fun, they hang out and have a good time and follow along and watch.

Fernie, can you find me a website or something I can go to for the new beach regulations? The last few times I have been I have not seen any signs or seen anything in the Nassau Co. newspapers about it, and the county commission office seems to know nothing about this. I've been riding the beach here since 1996 and never had any problems, (I do try to be considerate and not go on holiday weekends, or festivals and such as that) but obviously I don't want to screw it up for everybody by my ignorance of the rules. The last I heard at the commission meetings I went to several years ago when they were trying to ban us from the beaches (unsuccessfully due to all of our efforts yay!) was some sort of permitting in the works for the trailers but nobody seems to know about that either, or who to call who does.

fernie fox
Jun. 27, 2004, 01:58 PM
JM.you have been lucky.

I have been on a committee to fight them closing down Nassau County beaches to riders.

But sooo many riders are idiots.I don't blame the police for getting Pissy.

When the beach is busy with famlies, that is NO time for horses to be out there.

During summer time, they want the horses off the beach by 8 or 9 am.

They may go back on the beach after 4 or 5 pm.

You need to call Fernandina Beach, parks and Recreation.

I don't think you will like what you hear. They are not happy with "horses on the BEach.

Last time I organized a beach ride from there,I really had to play the Heavy.

There is a definate marked out Parking area.

People parked all over the place, even in disabled parking.

I looked up because I heard a scrambling noise, and 2 of these idiots decided to lead their horses over the bridge[disabled only]beach access.

Then some of them decided to take their horses under the showers, again horses are not allowed in that area.

There are picnic tables and a roofover in the horse parking area.

To who ever asked about Everythingbutwings, food,I can make her "Mini crab Quiches",they are fabulous.

I will bring a batch to the ride.

I will be bringing one or 2 non-riders,they will hang out on the beach while we ride.

There was recently an item in the Brunswick News about banning horses from the beach or requiring people to clean up the manure. I understand not wanted manure on the beach. I don't know how I'd remount and carry it around. Also how would carry around a pitchfork? They were writing about pollution in the water levels made by feces. The testers know it isn't human, but actually doubt whether is it equine. Does equine poop actually have a lot of bad stuff in it? I mean, we use it to fertilize gardens (composted of course)?

This is a little bit off thread but I'll throw it in anyways!

If any of the Jacksonville & surrounding area folks are interested, there is a Centered Riding Clinic with Susan Harris planned for October 22-24 @ Summer Song Farm in Jacksonville. The clinic date/contact info is posted on Susan Harris' website (www.anatomyinmotion.com (http://www.anatomyinmotion.com)). I saw a thread on Centered Riding floating about and it brought this clinic to mind. Susan's sister Robin is one of my trainers and I am helping organize some of the paperwork so you can also PT me if interested.

I'm still working out the details for the beach ride. I have to work that weekend but if I play my cards right I may be able to get Desilu to do all the work in getting the horses there and then just show up & enjoy! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't usually go in the heat of the day or on a holiday weekend or anything like that,(when obviously the beach will be a madhouse) and park where I'm supposed to etc. Actually I usually try to go during the week because of the people. But it only takes one......
Anyway, yep I'm still in for Sunday July 11 in the evening right? That's what we all agreed upon I think..... If anybody needs to come to my farm just email me gunner5928@hotmail.com for directions, my pts sometimes don't seem to work

From Jacksonville take I-95 North, travel approximately 7 miles to exit 373 (old exit 129), Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach/Callahan/Yulee Exit.
Right onto A1A East
Travel east on A1A 9.6 miles to the Thomas J. Shave Bridge
Cross Intercoastal Waterway and travel three-quarters of a mile to first traffic light
Turn right at light onto Amelia Island Parkway
Travel 2.5 miles to fork in road
Veer left at fork and travel 1.5 miles to traffic light
Turn left go a couple of hundred feet and turn right into "Peters Point ",beach access area.

We will be parked at the back of the parking area.

Sooo,if anyone would like to come to my "humble abode",and swim, root through the stuff,in my barn, that I have to e-bay,somehow get this trunk of stuff to "slave4tucker",if she can't come, you are welcome.

Bring snacks to share and non-alchohloc drinks,

I have boxes of "every sort of booze",you can think of,that need finishing up.[thats another story].

Meet @ 6 if you would like, pool and hot tub will be open, bring who ever you want, maybe someone will take my latest ,stray lab home with them.

fernie, if other people are up for coming to your house, that sounds fun too, assuming you don't live on the other side of the world, I know my family would like to come ( assuming you don't mind if kids come!)

Well, if anyone still wants to come I am still up for it. Pacificsolo, we will definitely get together another time, just let us know when you are coming. I will talk to S4T, since her computer is down, and see if she is up for it, if she's not I have room in my trailer for one. Otherwise lord knows lots of things need to be done around the farm as usual.
Fernie, if you get around Bryceville way let me know and you can drop the stuff off and I can get it to S4T, or bring it to the kennels at jumping sunday next weekend if you're coming and I can get it from you then, and also the coats and things.....you can email me or post just let me know....

The weather was a bust here. I mean it stormed from 5 am until like 4 pm. Lightening and thundering like mad. I def agree we should try again later in the year.

Jaeger, I might take you up on that offer... Once I get a trailer! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Man did I miss this board. Was off work all last week. Some days not by choice since my truck broke down. Thanks to Jaegermonster, I was not totally stranded cause I had her truck and a big Thank you to her. Sorry things didn't work out for the beach ride, but maybe when it gets cooler. And KrazyTBmare, I was not ignoring you. My computer at home has be down but JM has been filling me in. I think a early ride at JM house sounds like a great idea.

Jm.what time of day do you exersize your horses,I would love to join you for about an hour ASAP.

I have not ridden the new boy in company yet, would love to do a steady walk/trot ride to see how he reacts to company.

After many years on the track,I have no idea how he will behave.

He is a superstar on his own,but that could change in company of another horse, maybe the competetive side of him will show, maybe not.

Well I havve this job thing that is really quite an inconvenience to my riding http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif....when I ride really depends on whether or not it is a work day and what is going on around here, and of course the heat..sometimes I don't get to ride at allhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif...unfortunately I have to plan the riding around the working, would that it were the other way around!...but anyway, just email me, let me know when you want to come out, I"ll let you know when I have work or whatever, and we can plan it out
