The horse show is on Route 50 in Upperville, so the address in the Plains will put you in the Plains, not at the show.
Basically, go to Middleburg and keep driving west until you see the show grounds. You can't miss it!

My horse will be showing M-F, in warmups, 1st years, Green Conf and A/Os. A pro and I will be trading off in the open divisions. I would love it if you would come and capture him on film. Stop by Cavallo Farms and look for Barolo (aka Jordan) or Amy. It would be great to meet you!

By the way, to get the best directions, go to Uppville Horse Show Website (http://www.upperville.com).

Try using US Route 50 or John Mosby Highway to look it up on Mapquest, or just do a city search for Upperville. It's a pretty major highway, and the only big road that passes through Upperville. You can get to it off of I-66 using the Fair Oaks exit if you are coming from I-495.

Get on 123 in Occoquan, heading north towards Lorton. Stay on that till you see signs for the Fairfax County Parkway. Head north on the parkway (towards Reston, away from Springfield). After passing thru Fair Lakes, get off on Route 50 West. Stay on 50 and it will be an impossibility for you to miss the show.

Lots of opps to get right next to the ring. You'll love this show. Everything is packed in a pretty small venue so shops & food are close to rings and stabling. Sherrifs stop traffic for horse/human crossing from one side of the show to the other. The hunter side is right across the street from the jumper side.

I think some of the best pictures can come out of the Leadline class and the Sidesaddle classes. They draw huge crowds on the rail every year.

You'll have no trouble finding your way around and finding a great shot. Have fun!

Janet

From I95 and 123.

Avoid the Fairfax County traffic

Take 123 to Old Bridge Rd (first or second light) to Prince William County Parkway to 234 (bypass). They all run into each other, so no actual turns.

At the end of 234 bypass, take I 66 west (left exit) to 15.

Take 15 North (right turn) to Gilbert's Corner.

At Gilbert's corner take 50 West (left turn).

Take 50 through Middleburg, and almost to Uppervile. You can't miss the show grounds.

Nothing against Theresa, I like her very much, but she actually can't say anything to any photographers, especially not those who aren't professionals, about whether or not they can take pictures.

Another well-known photographer in the area told me about a run-in the two of them had some time ago. I said, "I thought she was hired as the 'Official Photographer'". No such animal. It is just because other professional photogs don't want to deal w/the heat she might give them. But she doesn't have a monopoly on it. And again, especially not on someone who is not a prof.

Jun. 6, 2004, 08:17 PM
The tractor rides.. Oh the memories, also sinking down to my knees in mud (not a joke). We were on the jumper side even though we were showing hunters so we got to watch the cars being pulled out. there was a collective pool going at one point about the toatal number that would be pulled out. (yes, we were that bad..) And it was muddy enough last year that a horse trotted around the ring and came out covered in mud. Mud on the saddle, mud on the stomach, mud every where. Oh mudville im still finding mud from you.
And if you wounldnt mind getting pics of side saddle for me, i would love to watch the horse that taught me trough the pictures! Im missing him currently. Your pictures look wonderfull..

Go Sea Urchin!

It was wonderful to be with so many good friends ringside under the oaks at Upperville to watch him get a well deserved championship. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have tons of photos, only about 30 of which he wished me to delete (naturally, those are my personal favorites!)

lauriep, siyafunda, Inverness, KateDB, dogchushu, Morrissey, HN73 and ETBW were in attendance to cheer him on. He managed to pull off the championship anyway. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

We saw larosa90, who has been having a wonderful show with her beautiful Jordan, along with Ms Cavallo - stunned though I was that they had opted to purchase hot dogs rather than seek out our table. Mr. Cavallo had "buzzed" by earlier and we had a wonderful chat.

A toast was made to Kennett Square, who sadly left us all forever during Upperville week just a year ago.

I had come prepared for the occasion and had printed off her very last post on the COTH bb, which I read to the assembled champagne blessed gathering. Poignantly, it was a sweetly joking response to a question of "Where is Sea Urchin"

quote:
Sea Urchin has taken a job with Homeland Security. His new job takes him to all the concrete bunkers of the world, where it's his official duty to make sure each one has a year supply of Wine in a box. In all flavors. Can't wait to see what SU is not only going to ride this year (on Wednseday) but what is he going to wear. The lovely blue jacket from last year has already been seen several times. Maybe he can borrow a jacket from Colin.......

Actually there are 19 entries in sidesaddle and the division plus stakes class will be held on Saturday.

Show promo article in Wash. Post today Metro section is about the division. It should draw out more spectators.

Of note, this is not considered all that big, there were 25 at Devon last week. I remember back in the 90s, Devon had 40 entries and the division was split in groups of A and B.

GND - any idea what time you will show friday and/or saturday? wow, prom and upperville - what a week for you! hope to see you friday or saturday. friday i will be hacking around in the late morning on a chestnut with lots of chrome - probably with some others who look a little out of place. We'll look out for you - would love to see Lion King.

Don't plan on the a/o's taking forever, there are 20 older and only 10 younger.

Thanks Bigbay http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I was glad they were all so good today, because all four showed at pretty much the exact same time http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. My feet literally hit the ground for a total of 30 seconds between 8 and 10 this morning. I have just one other person to help me, so we ran around like idiots getting them ready, starting at about 5 this morning, and my barn looked like a tornado had hit by the time we were done.
My trainer also gave me a total of 5 schooling jumps before my first a/o trip, over a 3ft vertical, on the horse (Slate) that I haven't jumped in four weeks http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif. Elcana hadn't shown since FL, Reggie barely steers in a grass field, and I nearly had to ditch the old sterling silver trophy off of Rocky in full view of the grandstand, since he was startled when it caught the light as they passed it up. Thank god I managed to hold onto it and the horse, as either way I'd never live it down. It was a bit of a stressful morning http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I couldn't read this whole thread, so I'm sure I'm posting in the middle of a topic because...

I HAD TO SCRATCH OUT OF UPPERVILLE!!!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I'm so unhappy. I was set to handle an Irish Draught on Sunday and due to complications with the owner we had to pull out. The news just came down tonight. I had to tell everyone because I'm just so upset that I don't get to go play... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
<sigh> I hope everyone else going has fun...

No mud. In fact, the footing is starting to get a bit hard and could use a little rain. Which it is supposed to get tonight/Friday, then be cool and dry for Saturday and Sunday. Perfect!

Congrats to everyone!

Funny-most of the newer posters will have no idea who SU is.

Noticed they only had on the results 2 O/F and 1 hack for the AA's. Did that complete the division?

The mud is starting to build up now. We were taking bets on which one of us was going to fall on our butt loading things into the truck http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Gee, Chanda, thanks for sharing... http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif Another muddy year for the sidesaddle division, how *do* I get so lucky? LOL Not to mention I have to trudge through it for leadline!

If it doesn't rain all night, I think you'll be ok. The footing was starting to need some water, and although it has rained steadily since noon, it is a light rain, not downpours. Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be dry and overcast and cool...

YAY!

Just got back home from Upperville--saw Laurie yesterday after I was all finished showing!

I guess the rain arrived today...I was surprised to see it had stayed dry overnight when I arrived to load the horses this moring...

Good luck to everyone this weekend-sorry I didn't get to hang around and meet more of y'all!

I'm in Middleburg right now, and it's still pouring down rain. The ground is really, really muddy, and the trailer parking was bad. Hopefully it will stop raining soon, and the ground can dry out a little. Most people have already dug trenches around the tents like last year.

The mud today was gross...I can't tell you how many times I almost fell flat on my face http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

They ended up having to move the ponies and Children's calsses into the schooling ring (out or ring 2) like they did last year.

dont i love to hate technology

EDIT: ok they are missing one class.. now how to figure out the Champion points.. Anyone know if the Stake counts? I have a strange feeling that in sidesaddle it doesnt.. Hrmmm

SidesaddleRider
Jun. 12, 2004, 08:42 PM
Tomboy,
No the stakes class does not count for championship points. Only the 3 regular classes of the division. The stakes is just an added class. But good news! The Greenbergs added an extra $1,000 to next year's winner, so 1st place will receive $4,000!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

that's awesome about the sidesaddle stake class! seems fun http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

i think the jr/ao jumpers need some more money in their classic lol.

Anyone have the full results for both younger and older childrens? thanks http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

another 1,000? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
thats a lot of money.. the guy at my barn won last year for the 1st time and we thought it was a ton then!
How'd you fair SideSaddleRider? I do see the mud did not suck you up as it almost did me last year.

SidesaddleRider
Jun. 12, 2004, 09:58 PM
LOL, the mud was HORRIBLE. The footing was actually worse that last year. At least last year, it was so deep my horse just sort of sunk in it. This year it was like skating on grass. Not fun!

But I got a 3rd in the U/S, a 5th in the O/F, and 8th in the Stakes class (poor horse slid right into the last fence of the judges line), and can't remember what I got in the Hunter Hack. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif And of course they don't have the one class I can't remember listed online, sigh. The ribbons are all in the tack trunk in the trailer, which went home today, so I can't even figure it out. Ah, I think I need sleep! Thank goodness we're at boyfriend's place in M'burg, so we didn't have to travel far.

I was over in jumper land and the mud was AWFUL! Loading the trailers was awful! My horse sprung a shoe in the mud (luckily the farrier was not busy!) and then we went on to place third in the A/A jumper classic! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

lauriep
Jun. 13, 2004, 03:04 AM
The rings in hunterland were definitely worse than the jumper rings. But as far as the mud on the roads, NO COMPARISON to last year. And it was pretty much dried up by the end of the day.

The footing for the GP today should be excellent!

Where were you? PT me!

Kamerra Brown won one..pretty sure about that. Codi's cousin was fourth and 8th. Go to horseshowsonline.com to see. Their results were always up faster than Upperville's.
