Ribbon shirts!

And for show jackets - having the lining of your jacket in a nice colour... lavender, rose, light blue, etc.

I saw a GP rider with a dark grey jacket with a blue satin collar with matching blue satin as the lining of the coat. It looked really nice!

Ribbon shirts have a band of a different coloured ribbon around the collar, and on the sleeves. I have a pink one with creamy white ribbon. I've seen lots of them with different colours. I especially like the tone on tone with darker coloured ribbons.

Wow, you mean I'm fashionable?! Living in New Mexico, not exactly a hunter fashion mecca, I bought myself one of these last year, mainly because a)it was the only one in the store that fit me and b) it was on sale http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif The brand is Van Teal, let me see if I can dig up a picture. This is great, I still show in an old unapproved hunt cap and a flat Hermes, and I wear a plain leather belt - I didn't think I'd been fashionable since the mid-80's!

OK, here I am gravitating yet again to the fashion topic and I thought I had everything (or 5 or 6 or 7 of everything). Have to see the shirt before I can say it is/will be fashionable. If I have seen it, it is so fashionable I didn't even notice...

The ribbion shirts seem to be alot more popular in Canada as thats where Marigold is based out of and they sell ALOT. I really love the coloured lining and have the exact jacket someone else mentioned, dark grey jacket, lighter blue collar with matching lining. Its hard to tell in this picture but you can see the ribbion around the cuff (black ribbion on white shirt): http://community.webshots.com/photo/99591084/159355200pADnXg . In this picture you can see it on the collar (pink on white): http://community.webshots.com/photo/86255998/159365052UOxtxv . The ribbion can be either about1 cm. thick or less and can go stright across the bottom third ov go in a "V" with the bottom of the V about where the botton hole is, then it goes around the cuff about 2cms from the bottom of the cuff or , if a V shirt, goes diagonally. You can also get two thin ribbions of different colour. They are VERY nice! A little hard to explain over the internet though.

So is that it? Just a ribbon of assorted colors on the cuff? If that is it, I do like it (can see it in your second photo), but honestly, I have not seen that here. Great jumper photo, got me thinking about showing in a few weeks!!

How frustrating is THAT... http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif I had a ribbon shirt I showed in two years ago- it was a GORGEOUS custom made van Teal (I have freakishly long arms). Unfortunately I've lost the collar and now all I have is the plain one...

Louise vanTeal retired last year (hence the reason my current show has too-short-sleeves), and I'm not aware of any other company that makes ribbon shirts or custom made shirts- I'd LOFF another one!

Jan. 11, 2005, 07:44 PM
I only know them from Marigold in Canada, but I do believe they sell through tack stores in the US, too.

If not, their shirt sizing is pretty standard, and you can literally have any shirt/ribbon colour combination you want. I see a lot of girls in the equitation classes with a white shirt with navy, to go with their jacket and stand out a bit.

You can call Marigold and ask more: 416-422-3032

But so this doesn't sound like an ad, I have a white shirt with lavender ribbon, and have a navy jacket with lavender lining. I can always say I look put together even when I ride all over the place!

Natalie
Jan. 11, 2005, 08:38 PM
They're only strategically placed ribbons. Go to the fabric store, pick out what you want, and have a seamstress (or you, or your mom, grandmother, whoever) sew them onto a shirt you already have.

Unless you have a spare $100 or so just laying around for another fad. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

What colors are hot for hunt coats this year, for hunters?

Limerick
Jan. 12, 2005, 07:57 AM
The jackets with the linings-is the lining done in a lovely colour just on shadbellies? Or could I re-line my Grand Prix? Of course, I'd make sure I had a very talented tailor first.

You know, I've realized why I (a re-rider in my thirties) like these fashion trend threads. It's because I can't afford a single thing from In Style magazine or Vogue. But somehow, with horses, I justify the $200 breeches and the $400 jacket. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif

Limerick, you are seeing colored linings showing up on hunt coats, not just shadbellies. I personally think they look great and would be fun to have.

So I know about colored lining, and ribbon belts, and ribbon shirts.... and I have seen that we are getting back the basic navy hunt coat - but will the grey hunt coats still be good this year. I have a gorgeous RJ Classics Taupe with a pink stripe coat. I am hoping this will still be "in" - geez aren't I picky. Can someone tell me the "hot" huntcoat colors.

I would imagine grey will me just fine. I think it's really become a staple.

Colored linings are seen in regular coats all the time now.

Here's the real question, how bout those piped collars we were seeing?

Would still love more links to these ribbon shirts!

Anyone seen anything cool yet, horse wise? Ie: boots, pads, girths, etc.?

What I want to know is whether the price on that shirt ($14.95) is a mistake! Pale Horse lists the same shirt for something like $85, so if the website you posted is correct, it's a great deal. --Jess

Sizing wise...I usually wear a 36 and in these shirts a 34 would of fit me better...but still a 36 was fine. So, I would say the sizing is comparable to other shirts, just maybe a tad bigger but not enough to even worry about.

I have two Grand Prix coats (other than the custom ones that already have very cool linings)and have an appointment with the tailor to have the lining changed. For $110 bucks it will look like a brand new coat! Better than the cost of buying a new one.

lvignerot
Jan. 14, 2005, 07:54 AM
What about coat colors? I saw someone in a french blue plain coat (very very faint plaid), with cream piping around the collor and I thought it was FAB! If I splurge and buy this coat, how long will it be deemed "Out"? I currently have a dark olive/brown RJ Classic coat that I wear with a pink shirt and it looks "ok" on my bay, but would love to go back to blue, but just not the "old" navy blue pinstripe.

Also, what about hunter show pads- what is in, and what about girths? fleece or nice leather.

I plan on going to Michaels today to get some ribbon to do my chokers! Most of my shirts have two chokers- one that I monogrammed and one extra, so I will "ribbonize" my plain chokers this weekend!

Absolutely! Just go buy some coordinating ribbon and stick in on your cuffs and choker. Who'll know? (By the way, you can also get very intricate, lovely iron-on decorative monograms at Michael's for your chokers for about $2.00).

And I am so into buying nice white shirts and dyeing them in my washer. I now see a project: dyeing shirts AND adding ribbon!

My Kippy fits under my hunt coat without a problem, but I've only tried to get my smaller one under a coat. I don't think my larger one would even fit in my TS belt loops. Most people at my barn show hunters with a Kippy, and no one ever has a problem (that I've noticed) with it fitting.

I have a wonderful old Italian tailor in town who is altering a couple of my jackets...I showed him the new colourful linings and want him to just half line some of the jackets. He wants me to purchase and bring him the material. I know NOTHING about sewing etc....what should the measurements of the lining be [just for the lower half of the jackets, petite size], and would a fabric store know what the material should be made of...help!! I'm WAY too old for this..you guys have got me ordering Kippy belts, engraved spurs and stirrups, and Swarvoski crystals off Ebay..I would have remained blissfully unaware this stuff existed if I could stay off these fashion posts. I SHOULD be shopping for a walker and orthopedic hose!!!

Racetb,

I had one of my jackets re-lined this summer. I bought 1.5 yards of fabric for the entire jacket (size 10), and I probably only needed a yard, but wanted to be safe. I went to JoAnne fabric to buy it. They have an entire lining section.

Actually, black coats ARE coming back in for the equitations and jumpers. I've seen a few Eq. riders (in Canada at least) show in black coats and it looks very nice. I *love* the look of white breeches, white shirt and a black hunt coat!

Engraved stirrups/spurs are definitely going to be in. I LOVE the coloured lining, but I hope piping doesn't go out. Two of my jackets have piping. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

*I* think that puke green breeches are on their way out and the lighter 4-way strech colour is on its way in, but thats just what I've noticed. More people wearing the lighter breeches because a) they are comfier when they strech and b) the colour goes better with light jackets.

I'm not the only one!! Yay! I had a crappy white shirt that fit so well I couldn't bear to part with it, but I just never could stand out in it... so Mommy almost had a heart attack when I asked her to dye it, but it came out a lovely bright (but not too bright) pink! Unfortunately, first time I wore it, I had an awesome ride, thought I would win, and placed LAST in the class. (IHSA show). ?? Talked to the judge and when i introduced myself, he said "Oh, you were the girl in the PINK shirt! Sorry, I didn't make any notes on you, looks like I had you out of the placings form the start." No one in bright pink placed all day. My mother has forbidden me to ever wear the shirt again, but if pink is really in... hmm, what are the chances I'll ever see that judge again? I love the shirt!

I have an idea! Now when we exit the arena, the announcer can call out two scores from the judge: One for our actual hunter or eq o/fences round, the other for our fashion sense!

Announcer: "And that's a hunter score of 82 for number 439. But now she's untying her number string, unbuttoning her huntcoat, and revealing... Yes! She's wearing a pink Kippy belt AND a ribbon-embellished show shirt! The judge nods his approval. She gets a whopping 98 for Artistic Merit!"

I believe that can be obtained with the discreet use of The Bedazzler. Voila! Instant rhinestone beading around the wrist of your SSG gloves.

And then during fall and winter, we can have fur trim!

Honestly, you may be on to something. Make up a few pair, charge $95.00 for them, and I'll bet they'd sell like hotcakes.

Lately people have been going for a more casual look in the show ring.. hopefully that will pass soon too - although it's mostly juniors. By casual I mean showing in colored breeches, a polo shirt, a flashy belt, big jewelry, and hair in a ponytail or braid. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif

The colored boots/ half chaps fad seems to be growing.

Everyone is good. I was just down at the show for a couple days, but couldn't do much riding, only flatting a couple of them because I just had surgery on my stomach - Madison almost ripped my stitches open when he tripped. Madison is good though, over his eye problem. The horses have been going great though and Candice is really excited about how they are going and this coming circuit. I'm excited too because of who I will have the oppurtunity to take lessons from, but that's another story.

Stella is doing just fine.. her eye problem is totally gone in her right eye, but we have to keep putting drops in her left one..but she is enjoying being spoiled by mom, grandma, and all the nice people that come by the barn and say hi to her.

I flew home to NY today, I have a followup appointment tomorow and will be back in FL on Sunday.. I am hoping that freezing cold spell will pass by the time I get back!!

On another note, my Dad called me today and said I get a new horse.. Monte Bianco is no longer racing so I get a new hunter project. I'm a little out of practice with greenies, especially TB's http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif hope I don't manage to hurt myself.

I am not a fan of the Kippy belts, and find them a touch too flashy. You should see how they look when paired with a shadbelly. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif I do see a lot of them, though, so it's obviously just a matter of my personal taste.

As for black coats, they are absolutely "in." http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif For next year, I predict the rise of muted, neutral shirt colors, as well as the proliferation of even more rust. I really like my Kippy. I have the small cowgirl style (not a huge buckle) in black with clear crystals. It works great under a show coat and jeans and frankly looks great (IMO). Belts are belts and underneath all the conservative clothing just add's a bit of color so to speak. I have oodles of Brighton's and ribbon belts too. Just wear what you want. FWIW, and no offense, unless you are a size 6 or less, stay away from a Kippy. They are quite the sentinal for your waistline.

Does anyone think the h/j world is taking on trends set by the QH world? Fake tails, engraved spurs and/or stirrups and Kippy belts? Personally, it does not brother me what anyone wears, but I find it interesting some of the things we are seeing now have been around for a while in another horse world, in another horse ring. It would not suprise me if we saw rhinestone collar pipping on our riding jackets.

Back to rust breeches, I have only found the Harry Hall ones and TS makes them too, but not in the low rise. Personally, I think they look most amazing on grays!!

I second comments re: the Kippy belts. Not my style, a bit too much. I am all for glitz here and there and for something different, but those are too loud. They scream "here I am." I prefer subtle.

I am also NOT a fan of black coats, although I probably wear black 3 of 5 days during the work week!

Nothing new on the glove or crop front?? I would still like a crop that has some rhinestones around the top, but would they come loose??

Back to rust breeches - I got a pair of Millers on Ebay recently for about $20. They look exactly like the TS sidezip, complete with the sidetag with pink writing, you have to squint to notice it says "Millers" rather than tailored sportsman. I actually like the material better than the TS. Sadly though, the fit isn't as good for me.

I have not read all of this, cause its long, so sorry if someone allready said this...
But you can buy ribbon at a craft store, cut it to the appropriate legnth, and sew velcro on the ends so you can color coordinate, like layering diffrent colors and changing the colors. You can just velcro it right on over your choker! Then viola! No sewing really involved!

Caution, Kippy Fans! The Denver Western Stock Show just concluded, and the trade show was loaded with booths (25-30 at least) with Kippy looking belts, mostly knock-offs. I would say they will hit WalMart soon, and I would not spend a lot on one at this point.

Here is the link to Rod's Western Wear catalog with Kippys and some good quality knock-offs for $60 - $100. A full six pages of great belts. Enjoy!Belts (http://www.rods.com/xq/aspx/parent_id.5/dept_id.25/qx/DisplayGroup.htm)

limited edition, if u can find a good tailor, then u should be able to have it taken in. i emphasize the good part here. somebody willing to take the time and figure out exactly what needs to be done and how much dismantling is required. but it wouldn't be cheap (less than $400 but not inexpensive). also if the issue is to take it in or also bring it up (make it shorter).
