This is going in another forum and I thought it would be fun to post pictures of your horses when you first started working with them or started them under saddle to how to they have turned out now... and share what you have done with the horse :)

This is Gode as a 3 year old when I first purchased him as a halter broke kid
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v711/Dezi_happypants/goddie7.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v711/Dezi_happypants/jimandgsmak029.jpg

and this is him now as a 6 year old, he won several hunter under saddle and over fences classes, and won his first jumper class this year in his jumper ring debut.

This is my little QH on our first ride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtMzR3Iz2jA).
At a local show two months later (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPR6UcnsnQk).
A year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFr8X8fdCYE) later.
God I loved riding that little horse.

This is not my horse, but a morgan mare who needed some help with her canter. She would buck and get pissed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFKt0IV7ywc) so the owner just didn't broach the subject for a year.
Two weeks later (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxnPXLMikag&).

My horse on his fourth ride U/S (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NoUJIpB0LE) in late '08.
Two months (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbwb_aGNWIA) later.
Showing prix caprilli 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWm14Qh3Mts).
Schooling at home this year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9q-EXvZ_5w).
Champion at first rated show this year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alb2OYGk8xs).

My ottb before we started doing dressage ('08) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jSKkXTqlAU).

http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc480/unionjack044/Horses/Lucy/lucybeforeafter.jpg

I purchased her in November 2009 as a very skinny 3yo. Word to the wise, a couple of pounds of senior feed a day, along with some hay here and there, is NOT enough for a TB.

December 2009: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/112809_022small.jpg

Summer 2010, over one of her first crossrails: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2010/042310_023small.jpg

October 2010, right before she went nutso: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2010/katelucy8.jpg

November 2010, entering into the nutty stage: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2010/112810_034small.jpg

She got a full chiro workup and a new saddle shortly after this was taken.

Lovely horse OP!

Here are my 3 current horses:

My Socks mare when I got her (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2869453970094686761KvpgRZ) (any jumps from the base were over-the-shoulder jumps like this) and then 3 years later in the 1.30m jumpers (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2991686560094686761qoMvJP) (it's hard to tell from a picture, but she took this fence almost sideways...she "wanted it" more than I did!).

My Billy horse maybe 9 months off the track in his first 2'6" jumper class (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2763067700094686761TwOFWc) and 4 years off of the track in a 1.40m or 1.45m Open Jumper class (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2656054410094686761LzQWQd).

And little Charley when I got him at 11 months (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2550090670094686761cOXKOd) and 3 years later jumping a little 3' oxer (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2346201560094686761EzmZXW) in a clinic.

Thanks guys :D I was actually looking for a chestnut gelding, but I couldn't leave her once I saw her. She looked so skinny and sad. She has turned out to be pretty awesome! She's feisty and opinionated but so am I, so I think we make a good team. We jumped 3'6" today for the first time. Thanks so much! It has been an amazing journey. A lot of work and a lot of fun. She was bred out of my super sweet, quiet mare by a very quiet, easy stallion, for the express purpose that this one was for me and I hoped to be able to do her myself. But, since I always knew I was keeping her for me, I have gone slowly and she has always led a pretty relaxed life and always had the stability of knowing I was around and she has never been pushed to do anything before she was ready, so she has grown up a very relaxed and confident horse. Nothing much ever seems to bother her, because I'm not sure she knows that it is supposed to!

Denise, stop showing off your perfect baby. We all know she's fabulous ;)

My first hony and me in our first year of showing (my first year ever) before I ever even thought of doing anything except little local hunter shows and eq:

http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc479/lucyeq/34700_1305255000486_1503852463_655879_7115195_n.jp g

She's a handful so I was very proud that we were able to start making it around a course at an off-farm shown sanely.

My jumper/eq horse and me this past weekend in Atlanta:

http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc479/lucyeq/314598_2104407498799_1503852463_1732319_1681155729 _n.jpg

My goals have changed a lot, obviously!

How about me then & now? :D

My progress has been in percents of percents, but there has been progress.

Early in my first show season, jumping 2' or so. Breaking over my hands, jumping ahead, and doing all manner of verboten COTH activities: March 2010 (http://stetsonphotos.smugmug.com/photos/i-dxMVVrc/0/M/i-dxMVVrc-M.jpg)

Here is just last month, at a medal final. (http://stetsonphotos.smugmug.com/Other/Gold-Coast-7/i-Rz2JZds/0/M/MaxandP-M.jpg) Still jumping ahead some, but actually steering over the jump, looking ahead, and the heel is at least level. And jumping 2'6" without thinking "oh geez that's huge!"

So we ARE progressing, with lots of help from sainted trainer that puts up with my bad habits and sainted horsie that covers for me when I blow it!

Thanks Dewey

I literally took a HUGE chance and bought him off a picture with my credit card.

He is the sweetest horse I have ever owned. He talks to me, snuggles, and tries REALLY hard.

He was completely race broke when i got him and it was like riding an unbroke baby. PLUS he is secretariat (bold ruler) bloodlines..so he can be a little tough. LOL

He is now, after putting him on Triple crown senior a completely different horse than i have been riding for the past year. He's focused, quiet (enough) and really eager to learn. Plus, he's a decent mover! No hack winner, but he does have a lovely natural canter rhythm...

(can you tell I love my horse?)

MCarverS, your failure in the "ugly duckling game" was that Ahme was perfectly adorable as a weanling! The others grew up real nice. When my filly was born, I took photso every day for a while, then every week, then every month, then skipped from about 5 months to 10 months, because it just wasn't her most attractive time!

llsc, that pony might be the "kindest thing alive" , but it jumps pretty darn amazing, too!

Love the "rescue" photos the best.

Lucy, shameless admission, I can't resist the opportunity to post photos of the Syd!

Thanks guys. She jumps like a freak of nature. I always joke that if she was a gelding I would have changed her name to EF Hutton, like the old commercial, because when she jumps people stop and pay attention. It's actually pretty funny watching everyone in a schooling ring with their mouths hanging open.

You want to see a REAL ugly duckling?

My gelding as a late 4, almost 5 year old:

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af182/MadBurns_2010/100_4630-1.jpg

His owners were feeding him and trying to do right by him but he still looked like a rescue for some reason... He filled out by 6 though:

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af182/MadBurns_2010/100_1669.jpg

Actually, somehow they turned a skinny thoroughbred into a fat one... (I did some basic retraining on him (walk... trot... stop... turn...) for his owners at 4-5, went off to college, didn't see him again til he was late 6).

Somehow as a junior in college I ended up with this horse... And we've done a few shows, jumped up to 2'6" in a show and 2'9" at home. But I've always wanted to push him. And me. I've never jumped over 3ft, and there has to be a first time for everything, right?

So I got a friend (who is an excellent rider and trainer) and a camera, and we set a one stride with a big-ish crossrail as the first jump, and we just kept raising the bar of the second jump, one hole at a time.

3'3":

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af182/MadBurns_2010/3foot3inches.jpg (http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af182/MadBurns_2010/3foot3inches.jpg)

3'6":

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af182/MadBurns_2010/3foot6inches.jpg

I look half decent at 3'3" and 3'6" I'm pretty sure I gave up any notion of proper equitation and just got out of his way. I had no idea he could jump that. I had some faith in him as the number of refusals we've ever had can be counted on one hand (including the one at 3'9" tonight) but wow... just wow... He's not very big, I'm only 5'4".

Not bad for someone who has never jumped higher than 3ft in her life. Not bad. I'm actually kind of sitting here in shock.

Well... this isn't really "ugly duckling" in the sense of being underfed and/or shaggy. Its more ME that was the ugly duckling. :D

When my horse and I first started eventing last summer, out jumping a small roll top at my trainer's farm.

http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/39054_546722027554_4303873_31967829_3731470_n.jpg

At our first show, doing BN (2'7"). I still haven't really figure out the whole bending at the waist thing, and pony is NOT gonna touch those fences, oh no.

And us in August, doing Training level (3'3"). Finally looking like maybe I can sorta jump. Pony knew how to jump all along. ;)

Elf when I bought him (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/Elf/Horses072409006.jpg)two years ago.

Elf two weeks ago (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/Elf/Elftrotting.jpg) (he's still very shiny (See Here (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/slorugbug/Elf/ElfSleepyeyed.jpg)) but it was stormy and there were clouds in and out.

And a jumping one (http://www.tassjones.com/horseshows2011/gregbest/traci/pages/_TAS5241.htm)

I actually don't see a ton of difference other than some weight, some tail growth and a more flattering bridle/bit. He was well taken care of before I bought him...and it's taken me 2.5 years to come close to riding him as well as his former owner. We didn't start cantering full courses until about 3 months before that jumping picture was shot...which was 1 year 10 months AFTER purchase. It's been a long, frustrating and rewarding road.

Hazel when I first bought her. Yeah it was bad

fat and happy

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n269/Roo-B-Tuesday/Hazel/HazelCanteringAugust2007.jpg

and I remember when I got her, she bucked me off almost every ride for a month, she would rear and flip over, then it slowly dwindled down to every week or two.. never totally got over her issues (she was abused) but I definitely won a TON of eq/medals on her. She was always perfectly mannered at shows, she saved her wild days for at home.

and Roo my retired barrel horse turned hunter haha. I still have him, and will until he passes on. He was the first horse I "trained to jump" and he was my very first horse. I'd been riding for a year when I bought him, I had to learn everything the hard way on him. Stiffest, trickiest horse to get onto the bit, he makes every other horse I've ever ridden a breeze.

I saw your video on FB earlier today and keep meaning to comment (but since I'm on this site I'll do it here).

Shanti looks fabulous! Congrats and nice job with her :)

Thank you! You're horses look as great as ever. Charley is sooo adorable. I remember how perfectly behaved he was at his first clinic with Greg. :)

I love this! Here are my two boys:

Zephyr as a baby: http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2818945650107358662VfKtjZ

Zephyr about a week after he came to be sold at my training farm, extremely neglected and barely halter broke: http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2939580430107358662XDhXuh

And Zephyr 1 1/2 years later: http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2464754880107358662effuCh

Let me know if the links don't work :)

The name Zephyr sounds very familiar...is he by Zeus?

This was the first picture I saw of my boy, and I wasn't overly impressed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Twists/ourhorses082.jpg

I had them take a conformation shot and decided to take a chance. As much because they were willing to work with my situation as anything. (I was in Korea and moving to Hawaii and they were in Oregon.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Twists/August312006016.jpg

I should have bought a lottery ticket the day I bought him, from just pictures and a short video, over the internet. While it's been a challenge, I have loved every minute of working with this boy.

Here he is at a clinic with Greg Best being ridden by a 14 year old in her second year of riding. She's taking care of him while I'm away (and he's taking care of her.)

This is my OTTB, Lucy, before and after:

http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc480/unionjack044/Horses/Lucy/lucybeforeafter.jpg

December 2010, "but at least she's really cute": http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2010/123110_030small.jpg

March 2011, trying to kill me (the good stuff starts around 2 minutes): http://youtu.be/S3AyGCwH-eI

April 2011, after 30 days of GastroGard: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2011/042611_048small.jpg

Also April 2011, during a trip to the beach. This photo was taken after she had just spooked at swans while walking through the water, fallen over, dumped me in the process, and almost drowned both of us: http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu136/unionjack43/Horses/lucy/2011/goddard/042411_beach_001small.jpg

That entire series of photos is here. That's right, we had an audience and someone kindly took photos of the whole thing from the beach. (http://lucysquest.blogspot.com/2011/04/funny-thing-about-swans.html)

July 2011, after moving to a new barn with grass turnout: http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc480/unionjack044/Horses/Lucy/2011/070611_072small.jpg

THAT IS AWESOME!!!

Thanks much! I think it's pretty cool too and shows the versatility of the breed. We weren't headed to Louisville in the ASB world, and we aren't GP material in the jumper ring, but we have fun. She may drive me absolutely crazy on any given day, but she's my heart horse.

Also .. this year I had the chance to ride our first homebred. I picked the mare, the stallion & named the baby. My aunt did all the breeding, foaling & breaking. Definitely a rewarding experience and can't wait to swing my leg across the next one!

New here! Couldn't resist this thread, I'm so proud of how far my mare has come in the past 3 years. She was a rescue horse that a family with very little experience adopted, and attempted to ride her (at 1 1/2!). Broken bones resulted. She came to our barn briefly sometime between 2-3, was taught to lunge and backed, then was put back into a field until 4 when I took her on as a summer project after my freshman year of college. After a year the family wasn't interested anymore and gave her to me (I was paying all the bills anyway lol).

This is my first (nearly) from scratch project horse, and I'm really excited about how far she's come, and she's made me a much better rider!
