My lovely Sara is really sick. I find out on Thursday whether or not they can fix her and if they can't we have to put her down. I got all this from Mr Riven since I'm too much of a mess to talk to the vet. I know she is going to or is already at the University. I just wish I could be with her. She is such a sweet, kind girl. Please send lots of jingles for her so I can bring her home

Mr Riven talked to the University today. They did lots of tests and more X-rays on her today but they still can't see anything. She is booked for her CT scan at 9am on Friday. The vet said he will call us while she is still under to tell us that surgery will work or that things are really bad and she needs to be put down. I hate these either or choices. I'm still hoping for a simple solution like an abscess but it seems unlikely. I'll update on her condition in the morning as soon as I know something.

She had her sinuses debrided. They thought that she had a very nasty infection possibly in her bone or a tumor amongst other things. Thank God it was a relatively simple surgery (she was only under for about 4 hours). Anyway, she had a month of RR and can go back to regular work in two or three months.

Riven,

I am so happy for you and Sara. In 1998 the UF vet school saved one of my very best fillies when she nearly died of a massive infection that was a result of a leg injury that went bad. She was only 2 and 1/2 months old at the time. She and her mama (who was only 4 yrs old) stayed at the vet school for 35 days. They not only saved her, but she is totally sound and a very fine performance horse now. Your girl is in good hands. She started to have that bad smell and discharge again this week. We had the vet out and Sara was sent to the University Hospital again (at least it is in Canadian funds this time). They are going to drill some more holes in her face and see if they can cure this nasty thing. It is so heartbreaking to keep putting her through this h--l. She is such a sweet trusting girl and we keep doing all these horrible things to her. Please jingle for her and pray that she gets better and this is the end of this nasty bug.

Oh Riven - thats such a bummer!

Spot Pocket has his sinuses done as well, on the one side, before I got him. I thought that it was a cut or scrape as there was a noticeable scar there, but then one day, I went to get him and it was growing, and it developed into a large, golf ball sized growth, I put pressure on it and all the gross pus shot out.
We kept cleaning it out and when vet advised that was the exact location for a sinus operation - that he must have had a problem before I got him.
Other than this one occurence, it never gave us any problems in 4-5 years

Good luck to Sara!

I am jingling for Sara and hoping for nothing but good news from you about her. I am so sorry that she is going through this, but they know when we care and they know when we are trying to help. She WILL know that...I promise.

When is her surgery?

Look at it this way, she is trusting because nothing has really bothered/upset/hurt her, so you dont need to worry about how she is feeling about everything.

Can they leave the tube in so you can flush it for a few weeks with saline/betadine?

If this has been mentioned, I apologise, I didn't have tiem to read the whole thread.

She is at Guelph. I've had great luck with my horses and dogs that have been there before. When I left, one of the vets was on the phone to Gainsville. She has been flushed 3 seperate times before with the drain left in but thanks for any suggestions. They were going to drill three more holes in her face yesterday and start flushing her again. She has to stay until at least Monday and then we will see if she is well enough to come home. If she gets sick again, they will re-open her facial flap and remove the fluid etc that way. If she gets sick again, the chances of her recovering are quite poor I guess but I don't want to think about that right now.
My niece disappeared just as we were leaving yesterday, and my sister found her in Sara's stall just sobbing. I know it sounds like an easy thing to treat (at least in people)but when you actually see Sara, it is so upsetting. The thing that is hard to come to grips with is even if I wanted her to just live her days out in a field (like a leg injury), that is not an option with this nasty infection. She would keep having to go to the hospital and have all this invasive work done. Its not the money (which is quite significant by now)as I'm sure is the case with all of us that love horses, but it is her quality of life. Don't get me wrong, I'll do anything to save her but I don't want this to go on for the next couple of years with no hope of getting better. It is so heartbreaking. Thanks everyone for all the support. Jane

Hi Riven:

I will keep hoping/praying/jingling. She's a tough one and I am sure she'll come through this. Many years ago (too many to count) we had a big old mare in our rescue with an horrendous sinus infection. It too seemed to keep repeating but it did eventually clear up. I'm really thinking positively that Sara's will as well. She has age and health on her side. And you of course. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

I had a friend with a stallion who went through the same thing. It took quite some time to heal, but after many recurrent infections and return trips to the vet, it did. Keep your chin up. Jingling in Louisana for Sara!

Is it tooth related? I had a chronic sinus problem with Mandarin at the end - he had a tube coming out of his face that I flushed 2x a day for a month - Cornell thought it could be tooth related, but they couldn't find anything with xrays, and at the age of 27, I wasn't going to let them knock him out so they could play with their new toy (they'd just gotten a catscan).

Its not a tooth. She had X-rays in Florida, a CT scan, more X-rays yesterday, and when she had surgery they could see the tooth roots. They feel that it is primary sinusitis. The staff at Guelph said she is bit depressed at the moment so they are taking her for walks as much as they can. They are amazing there. I guess the flushing is going well and they got some good material out to culture.

So basically,

She's got a nasty crud up there?

Mandarin's sinoscopy showed nothing, teeth were fine (he still had all of them), but I would flush hay pieces out of his nose daily. They spent hours looking for a hole. I just couldn't let them do a CT scan on a 27 year old horse - they said, there was a chance at his age that the anesthesia could kill him.

Good luck with this.

Any prognosis yet? Do you know when she can come home?

Riven - just tuned in ( been away) and saw this sad update.
Just keep the faith!!
Sinus issues are so hard to "get" all in one go - same with humans, a colleague at work went through the same thing - they had 2 or 3 flare ups before they got all the little pockets of infection- there are so may cavities that it can hide in. It took a couple of months, so dont despair. Sara will be made comfortable- and will get better.

If you’re lucky enough to be Irish... You’re lucky enough!
