looking at 2 saddles for a student, who needs to stay in this price range. Which would you prefer and why? thanks :)

Nicer used would be my first pic. I bought a Lauriche in fabulous condition for $800 recently.

But if you are set on going with one of those, the Dover Circuit simply for the fact that Dover has their satisfaction guarantee in case there are issues with the saddle. Collegiate is distributed by Weatherbeeta, who only repairs/replaces broken items under warranty when they feel like it, and it can take a year to get it done. It's a complete nightmare to deal with them as a company.

Has the student ridden in both? which fits the horse better?

I suspect resale is much the same for both - I 'know' a major dealer in Bates/Wintec/Collegiate & he has always had excellent service from Weatherbeeta (he also adjusts these saddles to fit the horse, a service rarely offered by retailers of B/W/C).

I'd also look used.

The Stubben websale had some lovely saddles in that price range so you might contact Stubben & see if they have suitable stock remaining.
