Claremont is the only one in the city. They do allow you to take horses out on your own if you're an experienced rider.
Perhaps we could do a group COTH ride in Central Park?

well we can always go on a little bar tour http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif hit up a bar before, do our thing, take a break, drink a little on the trail, ride, and then after we're all done...find a new hot spot. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
ok...on a more serious note...http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif has anyone ridden in central park?? I've heard good and bad so what have you guys heard? one of my best friends is pissed that she can't come...I had told her about going (even it was just her and me) so she made me call the barn....you have to know how to walk trot and canter without stirrups comfortably before they'd let ya go out. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif she only started riding again this summer so the whole no stirrup thing isn't makin her happy. i feel bad...but i told her i'd go with you guys and then go again after she gets better! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Oh! and the millers website for the one in nyc i'm pretty sure is www.millersnyc.com (http://www.millersnyc.com)

Millers is out of business but I hear there's a new tackshop at the same location (24th St. between Park & Third).
Claremont, hmmmm, definitely would require at least one drink before, and I'm not much of a drinker! Seriously, I haven't ridden in the Park since way before I started taking real lessons or owned a horse. I went out with a group into the park one evening and got bucked off the horse midway thru the ride. I got a bloody nose and a few bruises but was too afraid to get back on the horse so the leader (owner Paul Novagrad) took him and told me to find my way back to the barn from the Park, and by then it was getting pretty dark. Not a great expeience and I never went back. Then again I was really a novice and shouldn't have been allowed to go out on a horse that had a tendency to buck (which I learned later). I think I could handle a ride there now however.
I used to live in Manhattan, but now live in Bayside, have my horses in Long Island, and
work that takes me to LI, NYC and NJ.

I heard the horses are very well taken care of. The horses that we 'rent' are also their school horses that they use in their lesson program. Then again...this is all of what I've heard though. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Oh damn! I totally forgot...when I called to see about me and my friend going, they said they don't allow people out if there's snow on the trails or if it's icy. I have to say I've heard mixed things about how the horses are treated at Claremont. However, given it's a barn in the middle of the city, I think they do the best with what they can (no turnout for example).
Drinks - well, I'm an h/j girl with dreams of eventing - might be complicated figuring out when I should be having cocktails http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif!
I do live RIGHT in the neighborhood (3 blocks away from Claremont) so I would be more than happy to show you all the local watering holes where I ocassionally (cough, cough) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif partake of some fine beverages!

ohh fun!
I rode at Claremont about six years ago and it was a BLAST!
The horse I rode was very well trained, and in excellent weight and health. I was actually SHOCKED at how soft he was in my hands. A little on the lazy side, but that is to be expected (I was not taking lessons, so my leg was like a wet noodle).
We started off in their teeny arena, once they saw that we could handle the horses they let us go off on our own through the streets of NYC and into the park.
The only caution I have is that you need to review your stopping mechanism before you turn around and head back to the barn. They like to pick up "some speed" on their way back!
Do they still have that Chelsea Pier thing going on? I lived there when they were opening and seriously considered buying a membership. Didn't happen tho, but oo I was so tempted!

Nope, CP went bankrupt. They left a lot of VERY unhappy people who had paid a good deal of money up front. nyc_rider who posts on here was one of the ones who got burned http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I belive the NYPD mounted unit is stabled at CP now.

Can we maybe meet later in the afternoon and then do an early dinner?
Just a suggestion... then drinks won't make anyone feel guilty (and I can work in the AM, which I don't have to do, but it would be nice) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
linquest - email me if you want to head out to this together on Sat (either train or driving - was thinking we could go together) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Okay later in the day. Cooperfields and then early dinner or just a dinner. Happy hour can be useful since you are having a cold snap. Did you hit at least 10 today? I will post with a different name from my parents appartment thurs nite or friday morning. Pick a time guys.

Okay, here is my suggestion. What if we meet at 3:30 or 4:00PM at the tack store. We'll go to dinner / happy hour from there.
Or, if anyone knows that area and can pick a restaurant, then we can also have a preset time for dinner. This way, whoever does not want to shop can just meet for dinner.
How does that sound?
Who knows a restaurant in the area? What does everyone else think of this?

OK, I'm in! Later is better for me too. I know a couple of good places on the upper east side, but I don't know if you guys want to go that far. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
How will we know each other?

Thanks! I may have to work on Saturday, but if not, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.
Restaurant/happy hour suggestion: Copperfields is on east 24th street, very close to the 6 train, which we could take uptown. There are countless bars/pubs/restaurants on 2nd and 3rd ave in the 70s and 80s that could work for us. They're also more reasonably priced than something in Gramercy, near Copperfields. Just a thought. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Does anyone know when Copperfields closes on Saturday? I vote we meet an hour or two before it closes there and then move on to dinner and drinks. If it closes at 5, I think meeting at 3 would be perfect.
As to how we would recognize each other...does anyone happen to have one of those infamous COTH caps? I don't, but it would be great if someone did http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Copperfields closes at 6. So let's meet at 3:00 at Copperfields & then go to a pub.
My thought is we could go to Old Town Bar (18th St & Park). It's only 6 blocks from Copperfields & is casual & inexpensive. That way we can have a few drinks and/or eat & people can leave whenever they need to....
No COTH hat here - perhaps we can all wear a nametag with our COTH id on it?! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

ALso, Tecumsea and I were talking and we are going to try to meet outside of COpperfields (I know, I know, even in the cold), but it makes more sense so we all find each other. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif So, hopefully everyone I approach and ask "are you from COTH?" will actually be from COTH... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Mickster - of course not! I wouldn't tell her that!
I have far too much respect for a person who joins an internet bulletin board on a subject that doesn't interest him just to be a part of my lesbian wedding! (See, I DO remember you http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)
We'll just abuse her, and then when she revisits this thread in a few days, she'll know it's all your fault.
And, I'm SO NOT taking on a NY City cabbie. Ladies, you are on your own with that one.

It was a great time and those of you who live in and near NYC (and you know who you are! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )but failed to get there this time missed out!
The best thing about COTH get-togethers is that all the BBers I've met are even MORE fun in person than on here! It's always a good time.

nyc_jumper got a brand new gorgeous Grand Prix hunt coat for something like $10 bucks from Copperfields http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif but other than that we just talked horses, ate, and drank. We almost ate at the "Hairy Monk" http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif but I was out voted in favor of the much safer-sounding "Fitzgeralds".
