As a newish member and in light of the recent one on the hunter/jumper page, I'm curious on the best threads aka trainwrecks that have occured on COTH?

Something called "Attention Arabian Jumpers..." from back in 2005 probably tops them all, still available if you search. Takes one big bag of popcorn and a kegger to get thru it though, 100 pages.

Heat.her (or was it Heath.er) is more recent but not nearly as much fun.

There is also a (very) long running PV thread that has repeatedly danced with going off the cliff. That one is still active, or was last time it popped up.

oh that is a loaded question. We get so many varied train wrecks lol.

Ummm.. usually anything "We need to save the wild mustangs" will result in some interest lol.

to me (and since I'm the OP - I win :) ) trainwrecks = those threads requiring popcorn/boxed wine/adult beverage of choice, etc that keep me entertained when I have some down time (aka recovering from a concussion that is keeping me on the couch and not at the barn)

I agree--there have been some farrier threads with trainwreck written all over them that seem to have gone under-appreciated (based on the low number of hits, relatively speaking). I especially liked the Tildren for Ringbone thread in which JSwan used one of my favorite words, "schadenfreude".

Check out the Drool thread also, under the HorseCare folders.

There was a personal grudge between her and another poster and they couldn't take it outside, so to speak. She also was a ruthless self-promoter and walked a very, very fine line between "news" and "advertising". She didn't heed the warnings and ended up with the big "B".

There was some poster who faked having a deadly disease. Cancer, I think. She also faked having a broken neck and was in the hospital paralyzed. A real sicko. I think at one point she was collecting horses through the giveaways section - but I don't remember all the details. Screen name started with R, I think. Rogers something?

Oh gawd JSwan, yes I remember that nutball!

Isn't she the one who said she was typing on her keyboard with a pencil in her mouth?

Alyblahblah of the sammiches and BJs, the Chanter debacle, Musical Jumper, and I'll never forget the poster who stated that deer in Florida NEVER get out of their preserves and run into the roadway to be hit by cars.

I remember telling her I'd love for her to send some of their smart, literate deer who can read road signs up here to VA, since ours are just the run of the mill dumb ones who get splatted all over creation because they won't stay in the woods. :D

Yeah, that's her! Just taken to the hospital, paralyzed from the neck down - but she had the strength to eke out a post on COTH, holding a pencil in her mouth to type. (cue violins)

I remember the rest of those too - the literate deer, MJ (that was a travesty - can you believe that chick now works with animals professionally??????) and sammiches and a BJ. Whenever someone starts a thread about their non horsey spouse complaining about the horses.... I think of that poster. Crazy stuff.

You wonder where some of these folks ended up after leaving COTH. When they were here, you could kinda sorta feel like you knew where they were, literally and figuratively.

But where is Alysheba now?
And TBTrailRider?
And Chanter?
And and and...some are fun to wonder about, just idle sillyness. But most of all Pinto Piaffe: she's the one who is most recent, most visible, and in the most trouble. Convicted, right? You have to wonder where she is now. And is she still involved with horses while wearing rose colored glasses?

It's "so." Blind Alter left us hanging, well sitting in our crayola costumes and pointy crayon hats. I liked the threads where no horses were harmed and good won out over evil. Like the CCT and childinmypasture. Good endings both where horses and horse owners were OK.

What did TBtrailrider and some of the others get banned for?

TBTrailrider got banned for making some really bad racist threads under an alter called alter_shmalter or something like that. Her nasty attitude got her banned.
The only 2 others I can think of off the top of my head getting banned for just being rude, nasty and unpleasant often were Graysandbays and TwoManyDawgs.

A few other crazy as*ed threads that have to make it to the Top 10:

1) Cello's Pride - I believe all the Mods and multiple COTHers are now the subject of federal lawsuits involving egregious violations of the ADA due to this poster, our very own Perry Mason in a leaky sailboat. A huge WTF quotient on all these threads. Pack your hat with tin foil and hang on for the ride.

2) IIRC there was someone who had a liver chestnut WB, believe it's name started with a C, or was a wine reference - maybe they were located in a vineyard? It seems there was some serious drama around this situation - but I could be totally wrong. Anyone remember this?

3) I've stated it before but Pocket Trainer was just about the d*mned funniest thing evah.

Here's the link to the one I mentioned earlier. 15 pages worth of debate on flag etiquette at medal ceremonies. :D I love revisiting this thread because while it gets pretty crazy and COTHish, it's not a tragedy, like the PP or Musical Jumper threads or even Alisija thread. No serious real-life harm involved to anybody, human or equine. Just a grand old debate where everybody involved is convinced, naturally, that they are right. ;)

And TBTrailRider? Being chased by a non-Caucasian.
And Chanter? Somewhere that has someone abusing her, someone abusing her "service dogs", somewhere that she's not allowed to have water and there's probably rats there too. So she's probably trying to sue someone right now.
And and and...some are fun to wonder about, just idle sillyness. But most of all Pinto Piaffe: she's the one who is most recent, most visible, and in the most trouble. Convicted, right? You have to wonder where she is now. And is she still involved with horses while wearing rose colored glasses?
Probably doesn't own them since she's not allowed for some time yet. However I wouldn't be surprised if she was looking for jobs with horses or animals somewhere. And probably on another BB somewhere spinning out more fiction on her imaginary life.

So I jumped around the Alisija thread and it goes on and on!!! My question is the "houseguests" that are referred to are different alters people involved in the case signed on with?

And it seems if a poster is banned the mods automatically know if the same person is trying to post under an alter and that alter gets banned, too?

And one last thing, does anyone know why Thomas was banned?

Nobody knows for sure. Alters in such discussions can be anyone from rabble-rousers to genuine articles but nobody can ever tell for sure unless the e-mail addresses match those known to be used by those involved in the matter.

It's never a sure thing with banned posters just like I said above but if the IP addresses or other things match, they get banned. That's how it works on forums. Often, they adhere to a regimen of posting behavior but it's certainly possible for someone to fake an alter to make it look like someone who has been banned for using alters has returned if they post in a similar fashion. There simply is no concrete way to tell what is what and who is who without connecting the dots, which is not always possible.

Thomas was banned for being confrontational and borderline-abusive depending on your POV. He more or less whacked people over the head with his posts and didn't care to filter himself, which is what got him canned.

It's hilarious how differently we remember the truly outstanding trainwreck threads.

When I think of CP, I remember her leaky sailboat and naming the publisher of the Chronicle in one of her endless ADA lawsuits - I forgot that the damned 3:00 a.m. lungeing at Devon was the genesis of that hot mess!

Same with Chanda and her embryonically deformed superhorse, Chase (been wracking my brains to recall that thread). That baddie Richard Spooner was going to wreck him, don't you know!!!

BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

ETA: it's just too freaking hysterical - the deformed in the womb thread, that is. After LINDA ALLEN herself commented on the thread (not to mention "God" too), the OP got snippy! Classic Black Stallion references from jetsmom:

There have been a couple of memorable train wrecks in the past where all over sudden new members popped up who bore a remarkable resemblance to particular people, down to the type font and color....I think more than one outed themselves involuntarily by not keeping track of what account they were currently logged onto. Some of those new characters were engaged in a heated discussion with each other...

My opinion of what happened is a bit different.

I think he was having a rough spot in his life.
T tended to be a bit short with those he considered less gifted in the thinking department and it show in his answers, was part of how he posted.
For some reason, the past days/weeks he had been even more short, to the point of being almost rude to some.:(

There was a discussion about poisonous weeds, seems that the poster was new here but there may have been previous history he had of strong dislike for that poster's opinions, with good reason, as the strange ideas that poster presented could have been directly harmful to horses.
According to T, that poster even threaten/bothered him over the phone, T blew off at that poster here and was warned.

In his not very inhibited frame of mind, lets say that set him off and he was then a bit rude to the Moderator also.

So, all of us may have a bad day, say something innapropriate here and there.
At least we don't have the high idea of ourselves, deserved or not, to keep fighting from our high horse as he seem to have done.

No matter who you are, there are rules to follow and he had been stepping a bit over the line and finally crossed it with both feet.
While being close to the line as an old demanding grumpy master was his internet persona, when you overplay your hand, well, there sometimes are consequences.:(

Then, we really don't know, as they say, "the rest of the story", just watching from the sidelines.

For what I have heard over time from those that know T personally, in real life he is a very nice, kind and considerate horsemen.:)

TBTrailrider got banned for making some really bad racist threads under an alter called alter_shmalter or something like that. Her nasty attitude got her banned.

Man, forgot Tbtrailrider and her various alters all projecting the same racist attitudes. Add the fact she or they was/were chronically unemployed, had problems finding a place to keep horses for under, like, 75 a month, various transportation and health probems had her saying "no can do" to all suggestions for employment and refused to move closer to any population center that might provide employment. All of this was caused by the influx of illegals of course. She was a walking trainwreck.

Ahhhh Chase. Everything that one posted (and I think that may have been her screen name) went south after what looked like a good beginning. She was married to a winemaker and had moved to a wine area amongst his family so god knows what else was going on there. Started just asking for help-no trainer, no good place to set jumps, no trailer. Moved on to "help me get the papers on my Hanovarian" (or whatever it was supposed to be)-she bought it from a crazy lady hoarder of cats and junk who wanted extra for the papers...we figured it was a Morgan Quarter cross about 6" shorter and 5 years older then she thought...and crooked in the womb of course.

Speaking of great wrecks...anybody remember when Erin shut the Sporthorse Breeding forum down for a few days after a gosh awful couple of day when the board about blew up????? Some of those are back under different names.

I was in the barn at the time, she got asked to move her car 3 times her first day instead of leaving it parked in the tackroom door and ignored requests to move it. Got yelled at for the same thing the next day and she was late to work and left for lunch the 3rd day, never came back leaving no forwarding address or any contacts for her 2 days of fine service. Rode, maybe, twice on schoolies, she was timid on anything else over anything higher then a crossrail.

Then she shows up on here posing as quite the experienced rider/assistant trainer to 4' with this "Hanovarian". Turned out she lied about her college riding experience too.

Small world. some people get out of one hole and just dig another.

He's on The Mane Street forums (Thomas) if you'd like to catch up with him. His wisdom runs deep, his patience of late, not so much!

My big issue w/ Thomas was that, especially toward the end, he wasn't even READING the posts he was responding to - he was only responding to what, after a cursory glance, he thought they said.

He was on my last nerve with that, plus his endless pontificating, even about disciplines about which he knew nothing - and THAT ended up with him unwittingly telling a carded USEF judge she was a moron and didn't know anything about the discipline she's carded in...:lol::lol: Well, so yeah. Erin may have grated with some but she sure would have put the brakes on some of these recent threads that have gone way past where that padlock should have been put on. Mods are much more hands off then they used to be.

I didn't follow the Thomas drama that closely but IIRC things were posted on both sides that would not have been up long back in the day. Blame on both sides there.

I also recall a thread, maybe a PV defense thread to start with (what's wrong with riding with PV, he is wonderful or some such), that ended up in a squabble over an engagement diamond with alot of name calling-got some posters banned temorarily you wouldn't believe.

I just didn't understand what was going on - we all get a bit peeved from time to time, or have a fit of temper- it's just human nature. And we're not always going to agree on things.

But there was some real anger and there was no context for it - so I just kept wondering what the heck might have been going on behind the scenes that was prompting it. I was very confused.

Like when those people harassed Erin at home. Whether a person liked or disliked her - coming after someone in real life like that, having that sort of creepy grudge - is just plain sick.

I can't remember who this was - but didn't a disgruntled poster show up on a COTH poster's doorstep? Or was it someone sent by the disgruntled poster.

This is JUST a BB - folks. If you're feeling the urge to call someone up and threaten them or their animals-or are letting your grudge against someone get to you.... time to get some professional help.

Trainwreck right now on the farrier dram thread, isn't there?

I liked Thomas altho he didn't believe me in 2010 when I emailed him about a certain rescue. Then he discovered it on his own and tore into her almost a year later. Didn't his wife work for the government? If so, she would have discovered the name of the mystery caller, and then could have prosecuted him/her. They can trace telephone calls as easily in the UK as they do in the USA. LUDs are easy to get with a subpoena.

I think some trainwrecks are funny where no one gets hurt. I don't like the "R" rated ones so much. I prefer the ones that should be labeled "No animals or humans were harmed in this trainwreck." Like when kookicat survived the child in her pasture and the crazy crayola trainer only killed a gate, not the horse or blind alter.

Eh, Louise quit too, shortly before Erin did...not like it's a high paying job, and IIRC it was in addition to a regular position at COTH. Like the new Mods, more of a volunteer effort in addition to regular duties.

The decision was made going forward that the mods would remain anonymous to avoid some of the personal attacks and crap that went with the position.

The board survived and some who left or were invited out and ended up on other sites have come back under different user names-and behave much better then in the old days. Because it is still the only serious board for competition horses and their riders who compete.

Speaking of train wrecks, that farrier drama thread here on Off Course rivals some of the best farrier battles on Horse Care. We'll see where that one goes when the various recreational substances kick in later tonite-that's when they really get good...although the 8am PDT posting by a farrier calling everybody he disagreed with "morons", untrained horse "pelts" and refered to "cowboy whack and tack" shoeing was probably a sober utterance. One hopes.

Just read that thread and have to say the moronity was abounding left and right.

OP has a pasture puff she obviously hasn't worked with on standing for the farrier. Mare double barreled the farrier??? Yeah, he somehow ended up in a bad spot. But unless he was back there shooting her in the arse with a BB gun too, lifting her hoof higher than she liked was no reason for a horse to double barrel anything. That mare would've had a CYJ moment so detailed she'd be seeing the actual man in white robes.

Farrier acted silly in texting photos of his bare arse bruise.

New farrier posting is trying to get a rise out of everyone and they're certainly willing to rise. :D Yes he's acting obnoxious on purpose...and I'm not supporting that but I can certainly see his reason behind it when a handful of people say, "Farrier was a jerk! He should expect to get kicked in his job! Why get mad to be kicked???" If someone told me, "If you train a horse you should expect it to attack you so stop complaining!" I;d be more than a little pissed off too.

People, teach your horses to stand for a farrier or else cocktail them first or get stocks to stand them in. Because *NO* a farrier's job does not include expecting to be double barreled by a bitchy mare without manners.

MB, if you look at his previous posts in other threads, that just appears to be his overall MO. Or, he doesn't realize how he sounds. I know a few farriers (hopefully, not this guy, but it's entirely possible since he's in the area) that have a GREAT sense of humor - but if typed verbatim into a COTH post, would probably sound equally as crass. heinz...I'm just gobsmacked at all the nutters saying, "A farrier should expect to get kicked!" :o

And those saying the farrier was stupid for not watching the mare. What the heck was the owner doing? Bending over underneath/behind a horse does not make the best vantage point to watch their body language.

And how much you wanna bet that owner isn't doing a thing to "come to Jesus" that mare, train any manners into her or working with her regularly to acclimate the mare to having her feet handled? So far everything is the farrier's fault, she did nothing wrong. Betting she also tells the next new farrier that the mare kicked but it was all the previous farrier's fault.

A cow kick is one thing, a double barrel landing in the wrong place can very easily kill a person.

And just because you have too many rescue horses does not mean you pasture them without teaching them handling skills and ground manners. Pasture does not = don't have to work with them.

yep, that text with the photo was ridiculous. Yep, new farrier poster is being ridiculous.

but the most ridiculous is the majority of the ignorant rude replies on that thread.

My favorite train wrecks are the ones that have stellar recipes. With this most recent cold front, I'm dying for some new wild game recipes. My neighbor is smoking a wild hog for us, it's smells great but I'm thinking an apple & walnut type chutney would make it even better. I'm using a cranberry and walnut recipe, but it is for bird, not hog.

The sad thing is, there are people and their friends out there that expose their equistrian stupidity, and allow train wrecks to happen. It's colorful but tragic.

My favorite is the Spousal Abuse and Horse Meat thread; just love the recipes!

I still haven't bought Duke's Mayonase however, that seems to be a COTH favorite.

1) The OP knew that her Mexican stable guy was taking a crap in the manure pile (or crapping somewhere and putting it in the manure pile) because she could recognize the smell of human excrement on her dog's breath.

2) LisaX4156 and the pants photoshopped onto her kids who were, apparently, out with the horses without benefit of pants. That thread was the origin of "Where's the Fruitbat?"

I am on p. 9. Re Erin and the mods... If Erin had moderated the board, she would not have had the problems she ran into. But she actively participated and was very vocal about her opinions. That is not a moderator's role.

To THAT I answer: I'll tell you what -- watch an equine disability service horse die. Stroke his neck as the light leaves his eyes, like Barbaro. Hug his disabled autistic companion, for whom he devoted many many years serving her disability so that she might live. A service animal slowly losing his life to a founder "sinker" at the hands of "AnnTM," HLS HLR editor who got carried away in her zeal to breathe life and $$$ back in her failed snobby PGA Tours law review article after both the Supreme Court and autistic disagreed with her point of view, as was the Iraq War -- the scams that are the wealthy tax cut set fervor we have come to know as McLellan now tells it how is: Bush's Counterterrorism War on innocent American citizens known as "9-11." Moore couldn't have done it better.

"This thread was meant to be a tribute to such individuals. For you to turn it into what you have is disgraceful, and you should be ashamed" ---->

You should be ASHAMED that innocent American lives are being lost in a luxury wealthy preppie hallucination we call the War in Iraq dreamed up as yet another way to do a wealth transfer from poor to right folks. I would take you on further on this point; however, at the time my equine disability service horse got whacked by the HLS Counterterrorism nut case's aflatoxin idea of stalking him with her co-conspirators across State lines into Florida, the vehicle in which I was riding as a passenger was struck at about 50 mph by another Pennsylvania-ite couple whose brakes failed as they attempted a hit and run, causing my seat restraint to break, disclocating my uterus, which has been bleeding since January 08, and unfortunately, I am not up to the task at the moment because of this, to respond to your misplaced values any futher.

But please know this: I can't WAIT for Obama to come in and clean up the hate crimes perped on my autism, womanhood, and equine disability service horse who I also tell him "I live you" and give ((((HUGS)))) every day. From his perspective, like the vet who I'm sure would rather have a home and a blanket after the war, my service horse just wants to be able to do the one thing he loves most -- run again like the wind.

Mary Katherine Day-Petrano (mail (ponyhunterjumper@yahoo.com)):

WROTE:
"To equate the death of a soldier with that of a horse shows you are not a serious person." ---->

To a person with autism, my equine disability service horse IS a person and IS a human TO ME. Just as much as a soldier is to you. To trivialize the autism-service horse relationship as 'not serious' is to trivilize autism and the value of service animals to the disabled.

My service horse WAS attacked with intent to kill by a person (and her co-conspirators) identifying herself as the writer of a HLS HLR article on PGA Tours before the Supreme Court's decision came down; the same person my husband and I ID'd as boarding our vessel in Florida appx. 3 am during the pendency of my ADA civil rights suit, which suit subsequently came on appeal before that person's 11th Circuit employer-Judge; the same person I was informed by two BOs was involved with the aflatoxin poisoning of my service horse that occurred at the same time as breaking and entering into my vehicle, identity theft of my Florida driver's license, planting of a Counterfeit Learner's permit, entry into the tackroom at the barn to cut my girth in five places so it would break while I was riding, and my being shot at with a silenced, high-powered rifle missing me but taking out a light as I walked my horse.

Maybe you don't think these attacks are on a par with the importance of the Iraq War and the so-called reason soldiers are fighting and giving up their lives, but we are fighting this War to attack Counterterrorists, and thus, because the HLS HLR attacker was also in the DOJ Counterterrorism program with HLS at the time a person with autism was targeted for doing what Congress authorized -- bringing a civil rights lawsuit -- these attacks on an innocent American and her equine disability service horse are directly related to what you soldiers are told you are fighting for.

Is THIS what you are fighting for? To fight innocent American citizens, disabled ones at that, and to support a nut case HLS HLR editor who went amok and did what is not even authorized under the USA Patriot Act -- that is, attack a service animal prescribed as the disabled person's medicine? There is no legimate law enforcement interest in such an attack.

In closing, may your dear friends R.I.P. and may you come home safely. God Bless.

it was crazy and the whole bathroom thing creeped me out even more...don't get me wrong Burt Reynolds on the bearskin (http://mpempire.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/wtfhd.jpg)was not bad at all...but the taxidermy project in the bathroom was ick-ky.

ETA link as most readers are prob not old enough to even remember what I am talking about

Tamara

I was in high school when Burt posed on the rug. I worked as a co-op at an very large, international chemical company, and there was an ongoing battle going on there where this came into play. The loading dock guys had pictures of very scantily clad women hanging up. We all had to go to the loading dock to pick up deliveries, and so it was pretty public. When Burt's picture came out, one of the women scientists hung that picture up in her office window (which was a glass wall fronting on the hallway), so you saw it every time you walked down the main hall. The men were having heart attacks, but they couldn't tell her to take it down. Boy have work place rules changed since then!!! At the same time, I remember a report coming out on second hand smoke being dangerous and all the smokers were screaming that that report was a pile of bunk as they lit up in the workplace.
