We have found a rescue to take him.
All I know is he has a H tattoo,I think that would make him 25.
He is very, very thin, and needs a home desperately.
I think he is in O'steen FL.
He is obviously FRee to good home.
Will post more details when I find out more.
E-mail me at hossjock@yahoo.com
It is a lovely day today.surely someone could go check him out,and take him a carrot.

Fernie, do you have any other info on him?
Living situation?
Major injuries?
Rideable (even lightly)?
Special diet? (obviously now he does)
Temperament?
Discipline previously trained for (aside from racing)? i.e. hunter/jumper
When will you be evaluating & taking pics?
Need $$ for expenses?

Send me a pic, I will try to convince one of my equine connections who is a vet, but I doubt she will be able to take him soon.
Speak kindly to your little horse,
And soothe him when he wheezes,
Or he may turn his back on you,
And kick you where he pleases.

Fernie:
I just read an AP wire story in local section of the Tallahassee paper about a place called Mill Creek Farm, or the Retirement Home for Horses. There's no contact info in the article, but the owners are named Peter and Mary Gregory and they are in Alachua. It says that they take in rescues, retired police horses, etc. They are probably listed in information and might be worth a phone call, although I have no idea if they could come to get the horse.

fernie fox-
please do not knock this organization. I have spent many days at their place. One, it is a great facility but they only have limited room and resources just like every other org. I will say the thing I like the most about their place is that they are not over crowded. The horses live in lush green pastures in small herds. Two, the couple that runs it is so nice. I used to take city kids from Orlando to visit this farm and they spent a lot of time talking to the kids and educated them on horses and animal abuse. Every horse there is very loved and I am sure they feel bad that they can not help more horses. Purhaps you talked to a newer volunteer or someone having a bad day?
fernie fox
Jan. 28, 2004, 09:52 AM
Sorry Feder,"I" was the one having a bad day.
I spoke to the owner,a fellow Brit.
His attitude was jaded. And yes I am fully aware of what a great place they run.
IT is my own fault,I should not pick up these poor animals if I cant afford to keep them.Which is why I normally try to get them well advertized to knowledgable homes, just pass the word around.
I just could not walk away from "the Old Ladies" I picked up recently. Thanks to so many on COTH.they are doing well.
But I just cant keep them.We are trying to find somewhere for them to go,but the process is slow.
They get there final shots next week.
After that I will transport them over to "Longstreets"house[a COTHer].She has a lot of pasture and a great place for them to be.
Hopefully they will be able to stay there until we find a permanent situation for them.
But I am so fed up with people trying to sell these poor half starved, old TBs as quiet riding horses, kid safe, barrel racers, ect.ect.
We have soo many rescues here that resell these type of horses,it makes me shudder.
I swear,if ever I win the lotto,I would buy a place suitable for these old Tbs.to live for a few months and then, quietly put them to sleep. Before there life becomes painful.

Feb. 2, 2004, 12:59 PM
If he is very quiet, I would suggest looking into a riding for the handicapped program. I realize he is older, but I worked with a program in Brevard County where most of the horses are in their 20s-30s and are healthy and happy with their work. I think that Freedom Ride in Orlando may be looking for horses.
I think that retirement really depends on the horse. I have known plenty of 20-25+ yr old horses who were much happier in lesson programs or even showing than being pets in a field. I actually knew one pony that the owners tried to retire, but they started showing him again even up into his mid 30s because he would colic everytime the trailer left without him.

Damn, I wish I was closer. I always manage to find room, one way or another. And with four more mares leaving at the end of the month, it wouldn't be a problem. There's no way I can pay for shipping, though. Maybe we could do a series of runs, from Florida to Ontario? The logistics are mind-boggling. If we could get him here, he could live out his days, in peace and comfort. It's an awfully long drive, though.

I'd be willing to make a small contribution, but it sounds like a long shipping trip isn't the best idea for this guy. It sounds like he's not in the best of condition, and shipping can take it out of even the fittest horse.
Just a thought. But I'm glad to help $$-wise if that's what's decided.

Probably into the thousands, like two or more. I don't know how practical it would be to hire a shipper. There's no way I can do it, I have NO extra pennies, but I have the space, and tons of pasture, and hay in the winter. So keeping him isn't a problem. And then, there's the import papers, coggins, and border fees, as well. If we can do it, great, there's a stall for him, and it would be permanent. Once here, all costs for his upkeep would be my responsibilty. Can we pull this off? What do you think? Although I can't believe that in the entire U.S.A there's no one who can offer him a home. What a sorry state of the world.

I hate to be a spoiler here, but not only is this guy old, and not in the best of condition, but he would be moving from Florida to Canada - from warmth to bitter cold (at least this year). I doubt if he could handle the temperature change.
Fernie - have you got room to hold him, both to improve his condition and to wait until the weather is better in Canada, if we were to chip in and help with his keep?

Living dreams, Thank you for the offer. From what I was told, it will take some time to get him back up to acceptable weight. I received a severely emaciated thoroughbred mare 4 weeks ago. She too was approx 500lbs under weight. She also has no top teeth and scaly hooves due to poor nutrition. You can see every bone in her body as well. She was basically eating what the womans cows, goats, ducks, pigs etc. were eating.

This is so sad. The number of vans and trailers that are just parked at the show grounds in Ocala. PLUS the racehorses who are R&R'ing it in Pcala who go back and forth to the Tampa race track.
There ARE vans that make that trip all the time. It is just finding one.
What about contacting someone at one of the Ocala training centers, or at the race track in Tampa?

I was sent a pic of a VERY emaciated horse and I pray that it is not him. From the looks of this picture it will take a long time (approx 1 yr) for this horse to recuperate. I have my vet, farrier and equine dentist coming out as soon as he arrives. I was told he has no coggins, shots, hasnt been wormed, and hoof care etc whatsoever. Chris, if you want to arrange to get him out of there before Monday find out how much trailering will cost -- I can send you about $200. I'm sure I'll waste at least that much at the Beval sale next week, and this is far better than stuffing my too full tackroom. I know it's only 4 days to Monday, but I want you to have the option of sending someone for him right away.
I am overwhelmed with sadness after seeing that picture -- my heart is breaking.

How that woman can keep telling you "he's healthy but thin" is beyond me. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif There is no way in hell that horse is anything close to resembling "healthy."
Personally, I would eat ramen noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week before my horses would get any less food than they needed to maintain their slightly chubby selves.
Is there a commercial hauler that could get him before Monday? I'm sure we could round up the $200 or so it would cost to get him hauled up there.
Absolutely heart-breaking. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif

And there is a reason we (or someone) has not called animal control and had the people responsible for his condition arrested for starving this poor horse?
All of the discussion on this thread has been geared toward rescue (which he certainly needs). But the local animal control could have already gotten him and he would be out of that abusive home.
This horse has been STARVED and I am appalled. Why haven't others in the area called the local SPCA?
I will be sending a donation to Hope 4 Horses in his behalf.

Sicilianqt,
Bless you for taking in this poor horse. Are his travel arrangements all set? I agree with Lord Helpus that someone should call the SPCA - this horse isn't just "thin", he looks to be starving. Of course, it might be wise to get the horse out of that location before reporting them...
On another note, I visited your hope4horses website and got a whole bunch of popup ads from your host which crashed my browser. I have plenty of server space and would be happy to donate free web hosting for your rescue site, please PT me if you are interested.

What is even sicker is how many times a vet walked by and never said a word http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif. This mentality must end.

Of course I can't speak for everyone who is working on his behalf, but I can tell you why I haven't contacted authorities. First there is the fact that until we saw the photo that fernie posted I don't think anyone understood quite how dire his circumstances are.
But my primary reason for continuing this on a private basis is that I have no idea what would happen if he were seized due to neglect. Where would he go? Who would care for him? Would he end up going to auction like the lost horse in Washington State? Would the owners get their backs up and try to regain custody? Without the answers to any of these questions I feel very strongly that the best thing for this horse is to have the owners turn him over to a reputable and experienced resuce organization.
Should someone have done something sooner? Unquestionably -- and I am as outraged as everyone else at the people who knew of his plight and turned a blind eye to it. But right now I just want to get the poor old guy warm and fed. I think that is best accomplished by getting him to Chris -- and then getting Chris some donations to help care for him.
And one other thing -- as we all know, the internet is a very public place. I think we should stop any discussion of legal actions against the owners and/or caretakers. Should they find out about this thread, it would be a great shame if they were to change their mind about turning him over voluntarily. I completely understand everyone's reaction -- but let's keep our eye on the ball and just get that guy quietly out of there.

Keeping emotions in check is important but needed to vent on ethic & moral responsibility.
Why on earth would someone want to become a vet - not for the money - hard for someone like me to understand why people choose to always look the other way. It is sad to see that doing the right thing is the hardest thing.

Hi Chris, yes the 14 yo had taken it to her room to chat. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I just found her and kicked her off. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I'll write down the directions and head out early tomorrow. If traffic is light I'll try to get to your place just before noon. I'm so sorry about the phone, fernie fox called first and we talked for a bit, then Lauren took off with it. I've got all his equipment ready! New halter and lead, brushes, buckets and shipping wraps. Couldn't get him a blanket since I didn't know his size but I'll bring a few of mine and hope one fits for the ride if needed. I'm very glad that the weather is warm right now, he should be fine. I'll be home and will keep the phone open for you.

Ben's dad was seized by the humane society five years ago, and despite his former owner begging to be allowed to take him in, he had to stay warehoused with his owner at the time's other animals until the court case finally got sorted out. She did all she could for him, but he was put down before they were ever released for adoption http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif So, I think this is the best and quickest way for Reggie to have a better life.

Hello to everyone checking up on Reggie. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I just got home. Long drive but definitely worth it.
First the good news, Reggie appears to be fairly stable. Extremely emaciated but dug into some hay without hesitation. He doesn't seem to be too weak, walked into the trailer like a gentleman. He's sooo sweet. Let me walk right into his run-in, put his new halter on and shipping wraps. He munched hay for the entire ride down and managed to pack away one whole hay net full by the time we arrived. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Before I go any further, let me address a miscomunication. The people do have another mare, a 15 hand chestnut paint and I suspect the prior picture was of her. But she is actually in good shape. According to some vet records she gave us, the horses were brought to her place after being taken away from the former boarding farm where they were both neglected. The mare is now a normal weight and trust me, is very active(but she is only 5 yo). In my personal opinion, the young mare was driving the old gelding off his feed and they just plain weren't getting enough food for him to be able to put on any weight. I think she just managed to keep him stable. He looks about the same as when she got him.
I can't excuse the way he looks, it's horrible. But she was very agreeable about turning him over, the other horse looks fine and she showed me records of vet visits into the hundreds of dollars trying to improve Reggie. I really feel it was more financial/ignorance of what was needed than malice. I wouldn't call the authorities as now there is no violation to see.
Now, back to Reggie! He's very sweet(have I mentioned that? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) and has a very pretty head with a large, kind eye. He's a very dark bay/brown with a white star. I have several pictures that I'll try to post but they may be too big in KBs. He would be quite pretty once normal weight, his conformation is nice(not hard to tell as you can see every bone)! His ground manners are perfect and I'm already wanting to visit him again. Next time I'm down that way I'll stop and take more pics.
I'm really beat so I'm going to try to post these and then head to bed. Take care and thank you so much for all the good wishes. Sicilianqt told me she would post more when she gets home.

To resize .jpg files in microsoft photo editor, go to "image" in the menu bar, scroll to "resize", then adjust down the width from 100%. The height will reduce automatically when you reduce the width. When you are done reducing (probably down to 30% to get the file size small enough), click OK, then do a "save as" with a new name, so you don't permanently change the original photo size.

ok, im home from work. Reggie is a sweet heart. Great manners, very gentle. He is bone thin but ate his hay with gusto. I have my vet coming out tommorow to do his shots and coggins since he has neither and the farrier and dentist will be out Monday. I agree with Arnika, I believe this was a factor of pure ingnorance. I have gotten 4 different stories on this horse by 4 people. The owner said he was not rescued from another farm , but was not being feed from her forme SIL and they were thrown out of the barn and forced to put him on their property. Who knows. Either way this horse should not look like this and will NEVER be put in this situation again. I hope to post pics by tomorrow so everyone can see him. He is sweet.

Ok some bad news about Reggie. he is severely anemic, underweight, dehydrated, full of worms, and is not passing any solid manure now. its all water that shoots out. We had a specialist look at him an hour ago because of this and he is appalled at his condition. He also has an infection in his sheath from buildup. He could not believe a vet would have someone put 2 cups of mineral oil per day in his feed. He broached the subject of euthenasia because of his problems and the cost to rehabilitate him, but said he IS fixable it will just take ALOT of time. He believes Reggie to be about 18-19 y/o. He gave him an IV bag of fluids with , i cant think of the name right now, for his dehydration. We opted to save him, not euthenise. He is savable and he deserves that chance. We will find out in the next day or 2 if he has other problems. I will keep you posted.

Sicilian qt.The owner told me his tattoo was starting with an 'H',as I said at the beginning of this thread, that would make him 25.
The symptoms he is experiencing I would expect from a horse as emaciated as he is.
Who on earth sugested Mineral oil.
Corn oil I could understand, that is great stuff when he can take it.
Thank you so much for taking him.
I know you will get a lot of support from the folks here.
It will take a few days to assess his true condition. Please keep us posted on his progress.
Thank you again.

It started a 1 cup 2ce per day and was upped to 1/2 gallon 2ce per day. I just got back from him again, we had toput him in the quarintine pen until tomorrow. he is shootong his stuff all over the walls. he did nicker when i walked up and it made my eyes a lil teary.

We put him on probiotics as well as several other additives. Its amazing to see all of the vets, farriers, etc that have dropped by to see him. he is just such a sweet boy. We all tried to read the tatoo but it is realy blury. When I spoke to the owner she said he was 17 or 18 and 3 vets and the dentist believe he is that age to. Who knows? He is a beauty isnt he? The children in one of our Pennies for Ponies classrooms will be renaming him tomorrow. We had another class that is involved in our program rename our one rescue from her previous name to Tennessee. The kids love that they get to pick and vote on new names.

I hope he will do well, next time I am down his way I will visit him.

Fernie, I agree. He's not as bad as I was expecting. And doesn't that say a lot about what we've both seen, and come across. And after all theses years, i still don't understand how any horse can come to this condition, without Someone, stepping in to do something.
You're the best for being that person who steps in, as are all you people who made donations, did the driving, and have given this poor boy a home. Congratulations, everyone!

Basque Mom, I had that exact same thought when I saw him. I'm not a very good photographer but I hope I captured a little of his class.
He very much reminded me of the end of Black Beauty(I know, how sappy can I get http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif). But truly when I took a good look at him it is obvious that he is well bred, probably quite a classy horse in his younger days. Put this together with his very good manners and kind disposition and he fits right in there.
Fernie, I realize you've seen a lot more of these rescues than I have but I hope to never see a horse worse off than he is. If he was any thinner there would be nothing left. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I can relate to this. Please take care of yourself, it is very easy to get burned out dealing with peoples inhumanity to animals on a frequent basis. We do what we can one day at a time. Each rescue is precious. You are doing a wonderful work here, but please look after your own emotional needs too, even if you must slow down your efforts for a little while ! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

fernie - don't give up! It's people like you that restore my faith in humanity! You can't save them all, but you do what you can. That's all anyone can ask!
I look up to people like you with your huge hearts. It makes me look forward to the day that I have property where I can give refuge to the horses that need our help. Keep the faith! It may seem to you that you are losing the war, but I bet if you asked Reggie he would say that that you've won one small battle for him. Try to look past the "big picture" of suffering and see the small victories that you have accomplished.

I certainly understand that feeling. The auctions here are heartbreaking. Some of the horses they bring through can barely stand up and are beyond saving and there are many others who look basically like Reggie that might be comfortable and happy with good care. But every time some of these horses that could be rehabilitated end up at the killers. There are just too many unwanted horses and not enough people with the means and the desire to do somehthing about it. I do as much as I can (which isn't too much in the grand scheme of things) and a lot of other people on these boards like Fernie and Sicilianqt (and Trudy Glefke in my area) do a whole lot more. My SO told me that although he will always help me care for the horses we take home, he cannot come to the auctions any more because it affects him too much mentally. I can definitely understand.
Edited to add: OneOnOne - you said more of what I wanted to say, and much better. Couldn't agree more.

I think someone might want to call the person who had Reggie and explain this to her. After all, from what we know she did take in two starved horses, one of whom has recovered. She did try to help this guy and was willing to give him up to a responsible party when she couldn't (possibly due to bad advice).
Also, she might want to switch vets.

I spoke to the owner, not the sister in law who stated that both of these horses are hers. She said it was the sister in law who did not feed reggie. She was shocked to hear that he was getting mineral oil. We tapped him and he was 748 lbs. He still has severe diareah. I dont know about either story. Each one is blaming the other. I know a vet was called by the owner, but according to the stories I got from 2 people in the sister in laws house, the horse was NOT being feed.I was told it was not their responsibilty. I do know the sister in law was out of feed and hay on the day he was picked up. Which is odd. The owner called me yesterday and said it was her sister in law who did it, that she had not sen reggie in some time. If this horse was being taken care of he would not have an uncared for sheath infection, be full of worms, no hoof care etc. Something just doesnt add up. I was told animal control was called on them several times. Regardless, i feel both are in the wrong. The owner for knowing his condition and leaving him there and the in laws for neglecting him in other ways. I will update later

OK, then, never mind. I got the impression from this thread that the horse was given up by someone who had already rescued him and couldn't deal with him. So it was just a case of CYA. I hope Animal Control can get the other horse away.

sicilianqt,
I think we should start a jingles thread for Reggie. Poor old guy.
I know you know what you are doing in the recuperation department, but here is my story:
I rescued an Arabian over 2 years ago who spent 13 years living in Florida on racing farms. She is a very expensive import from Poland and you can tell she was treated really well most of her life, however, there is some abuse in her past. Anyway, she was sold in October 1998 at a seizure auction and brought to Michigan (it is already cold here at that time of year). I don't know much about what happened to her between 1998 and October 2001 when I bought her, except she went through several auctions. She was about 200 lbs underweight when I brought her home, so I tried a variety of feeds and supplements to get her weight up and found a combination that really worked well for her. I feed her alfalfa cubes soaked in water in addition to small amounts of baled hay, equine senior feed, vitamin B-12 supplement and Cocasoya oil. The Cocasoya oil is great! It isn't refined for human use so it has all the Omega-3 fats that are needed to add weight. Her teeth have worn in waves so she cannot chew a lot of hay, so winters in Michigan are really hard on the old girl. Our dentist is working on them but at her age (26) they can only do so much.
I know you do this sort of thing everyday, but I swear by both the alfalfa hay cubes and the cocasoya. The cubes are easy to digest and because they are concentrated, you don't have to feed alot to get results. Also, the oil is very cost effective. A gallon jug costs $9.95. I bought one in November and began feeding one pump per day (I think that is about an ounce). I still have several ounces left in the jug. The other thing about it is, they like the taste. You can get it in a 5 gallon pail also. Ukele is the manufacturer.
God bless you for taking in this gentleman horse. I hope your efforts will allow him to live out his golden years in contentment.

Liretta,
We also use alfalfa cubes. We soak them for both Reggie and another mare we resued whose teeth had fallen out due to malnutrition. I also use straight alfalfa for emaciated horses. Our vet has been involved in several studies that swear by straight alfalfa. I have never heard of the oil but i will ask her.

Hi, Marta.
Her name is *Gardenia PASB, not to be confused with the Bask daughter also named Gardenia, but born in the US. Bask is her great uncle, though!
Gardenia, AKA Jasmine, was owned by Betsy Burger in Ocala, FL. Dr. James Budd bought her and I believe brought her to Michigan to his sons farm in Eaton Rapids, Tri-Color Farm. When I bought her she had a coggins and my friend contacted the people who were listed as the owner on the coggins, and they said they had her for about a year, but she was too dangerous for their kids! I am surprised because she is a doll with my 11 year old. I can only speculate what they did with her or maybe they made her live alone, something she will not tolerate. Anyway, she went back into the auction circuit and I bought her from a dealer who picked her up with the intention of finding a home for her. She doesn't have papers but she has the brands from Janow Podlaski on her withers; it was the only way to trace her, however, it took a trip to Poland by George Z., a reknown Arabian trainer from Poland working in Washington state, to actually find out her ID. I have a photocopy of her Polish registration, but I have to contact Dr. Budd and try to get him to sign her AHR papers over to me.
One of these days I will post some before and after pics of her. She is a real beauty!

In defence of Chris,a bomb could go off in my barn, and I don't think my hubby would notice.

ok, im back. My husband doesnt know one horse from another so he probably had no idea who she was asking about. Plus he works midnights and sleeps during the day so he might of been groggy. Regie still has an infection in his sheath which caused a fever last night. He is still on antibiotics and I cleaned it all out again. Its very nasty. I stayed with him until around 12:30- 1am and left for school at 7:30 and had to be at work at 10 am so I didnt have time to post. Sorry to worry everyone. His bowels are still runny but not pure water anymore. We gave him a good bath and it took 2 full bottles of shampoo until the water ran clear. Alot of dried mud and manure. He doesnt look any different to me but he is getting 8 flakes of hay per day now 2 T&A and 2 alfalfa in the A.M. and the same at night. We put him on Seminole Gold Chance 12 plus Lysine and probiotics. He is still passing worms so he might have been a little off due to that also. The kids in he Pennies for Ponies class named him Simba. Little weird but they are now his sponsors. I received several donatins for him today and thank you to Terry, Jennifer, and Terry M. I will be down there tomorrow a.m. for the farrier but the vet wants to wait a while before he gets his shots. He's just not up to it yet. He still has the sweetest disposition on him and is very gentle with kids. Ive already had a woman ask to adopt him but I turned her down. I think he's been through enough already. I will post tomorrow.
Chris. PS. again, thanks for all the help.

Fernie, when I can't sleep, I make some hot milk and honey. If that doesn't work, hot chocolate with rum. I try not to do that too often, a bottle of rum (a small one) will run me about 2 years! And then I curl up in bed, with both the dogs, add a couple of cats, and a dull book, with fine print.
If absolutely nothing works, then I sit up and watch Star Trek reruns.
less hard work, more fine dining.

Many jingles coming Reggie/Simba's way. I think it is a cute name. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif I had a 'Reggie', and my hope is that this Reggie turns out to be as healthy and well-fed as mine became. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif
fernie, I'm sorry you can't sleep at night. You are doing a wonderful thing by trying to save all these horses. But you can't save them all. No one can. You have to do the best you can, without killing yourself financially, physically or emotionally, and take solace in each small victory, not beat yourself up over each one you can't help. Find solace in the fact that your animals are well-taken care of, have enough food, have proper veterinary care... and that you are the one to provide it, because many, many people won't even do that for their animals.
For the near-term, try taking a warm bath right before bedtime. I was having a hard time sleeping at one point, and this would put me out *in* the tub. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif The other thing you may want to ask your doctor for is Ambien. I had a friend going through a really rough patch after her mom passed away, and she said they really helped and she woke up refreshed, not groggy.
