I bet you're absolutely pooped from the move, but if you get a chance to stop in, say hi, and tell us how you're doing I know I'd love to hear.

Your horse, Pal Joey, is a total mud hog! He's got mud in places no horse should have it--even the tips of his ears are dirty. Every day he goes out, hits the sloppiest spot, drops and rolls--moans an groans and has a fine time of it, jumps up and takes off leaving a trail.

Free, everyone is SO thankful that you are home, and doing so well! Your courage and will to get better is inspiring.

And no, you are NOT a burden! I know that your family would go to the ends of the earth to have you home with them, and would never think of you as a burden. It is just hard on a normally active horsewoman to ask for help...when I was injured, I had to rely on DH for so many things, and it was hard. We are independent kind of gals! Keep up that PT and you'll be running circles around the yard before you know it!

Free--

Yeah, well, I'm sure your kids were a burden when they were growing; we all take our turns at needing a helping hand. The problem is as independent adults we realize it--and the flip side is, the good news is we realize it. I'm sure you bring more joy than problems, just like your kids did when they were small.

Keep focusing on the PT and I'm sure you will realize the best degree of independence and recovery as can be.

We're all glad you're here.

Dear Free,

Please believe me when I tell you that you are so NOT a burden! Last June I had to make the sad decision to take a loved one off life support. If he was still here today, that last thing he'd be is a burden.

The ongoing story of your successful recovery is a balm for the soul. Keep it up! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Mary! I took care of my mother after her heart valve replacement and cancer surgery. I CHERISH that time and would give anything to be able to care for her one more day. Your family considers it a privilege to take care of you for once! Just keep smiling and tell them you love them. Best payback ever!

Mary,

Like everyone else, I am THRILLED at your recovery and progress.

I know that it must be hard work sending replies, so PLEASE don't feel you have to reply to each of our messages.

WRT burden- your family is telling the truth when they say you are not a burden. My mother died in 1975, when I was approximately the age your son is now. She spent a couple of months in hospital at Sloan Kettering in New York, and then came home when they could offer nothing more. She also thought she was being a "burden", because we had to do all the things for her that the nurses were doing in the hospital.

But, from our perspective, not only were we glad to look after her, it was LESS of a burden to have to do MORE things for her at home, compared with going to the hospital every day to visit. We could look after her, AND do the things we needed to do at home, as well as the things we wanted to do. While we were visiting every day, EVERYTHING at home got put on hold. The only way my father could pay the bills was to skip a visit. Once she was home, he could pay the bills and be with her at the same time. And so on.

BELIEVE them when they say it is not a burden.

Off on another tangent, Sportscar will be in Florida at the end of February, beginning of March, doing JUMPERS at WEF.

Jessi P

Mary you are SO NOT a burden!! Think back to when your kids were small... would you equate being a mother with caring for a burden? Well you need a bit of mothering now (we all do at times) and your family is chomping at the bit to do this for you. Indulge them! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It wont be long - it will be sooner than you know it that you are fully back in charge (and responsible for the whole shooting match again). Enjoy the respite!

Hello again everyone. As Andy said, we have been very busy with free since her homecoming on January 11th. Mary's birthday was yesterday (Friday the 27th) and she had another great day.
At rehab she walked for the first time using only a cane. She is getting stronger every day. The Shands rehab people are really great and Mary enjoys her time there. The transfers to and from her wheelchair are also getting easier snce Mary continues doing more and more of the work.

I have some homecoming photos to post - please help on how to do this. I can email to someone and maybe they can post.

Mary,

Sure, we can do the paddock sale again. The two that Sarah got are doing great--the gelding ($400)is turning out to be a potential upper level horse, the mare ($1000) is kind and sweet and not as motivated and will probably be the one she sells. The gray horse ($450) that Eron bought is doing well for her and she just loves him.

I believe Joe told you if you got better you could buy more horses... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

CAN't purchase at this minute. we had one new colt born and two new expected any time now. the colt is out of Ashes of Roses (Waquoit) and by Catherston Liberator. He has huge bright star with a small snip on his nose. HIS IS FREINDLY! He is a chestnut right now but I think he might change to a grey or a roan.

I am doing fine Going to rehab three times a week. I am getting stronger every day. i actually stood up all by myself yesterday.

Where is the September paddock sale? I'll be in the market for another OTTB then.......

The Paddock sale is held in early September at the Fairmount Park race track in Collinsville, Illinois. Look on any road atlas
at the St. Louis & Vicinity detail map. The race track is located
near the intersection of INTERSTATES 55/70 and I-255. For the
ultimate in advice on the paddock sale contact CANTER Southern
Illinois or LAZ.

Hey Free, so good to see you posting! Come to the paddock sale this fall, and I'll be SURE you don't go home empty handed.

You'll be glad to hear that the horse you were concerned about last year (the tall boy in the nasty barn) is doing well. Found him locally and he looks great (although he did fail a vetting).

And the trainer who had him? BOOTED from the racetrack - PERMANENTLY. They sent security in with him and gave him an hour to clear out his tack room, and he no longer owns any horses. >>insert happy dance here<<

Hello Lee Ann,

Thank you for your post and concern. Thanks to everyone on COTH for their support and prayers over the last year.
.
Andy is back in PA and is doing very well. I just wish that he was here!

When will you be back at Fairmount? How are your students doing?

I have been home from the hospital for 10 months and continue to do rehab 3 or 4 times weekly. I really like the pool therapy and it is helping me to walk.

Hey--Great to see you post!

I haven't been to Fairmount since June--I bought a 4 year old named Elijah M. He's doing well, simple to ride and hopefully my crazy schedule will ease up and I'll get him out in the spring. I saw a horse on the Ohio website that I would have gone and gotten, but she was sold already--look her up if you get a chance: Liquidated Damages. Gorgeous and a fabulous pedigree.

Pal Joey is fat and happy. He's liking retired life.

The new farm is going great, I've got a bank complex in the building stages and am planning where to put my water complex. I've got a show going on this weekend--50 entries for a November show! I've been surpised by the number of entries I've gotten for all the shows we've had here--there is clearly a need for inexpensive schooling shows in the area.

Keep up with your physical therapy, and let me know if you want to go horse shopping again.

How's Mach 10 doing?

Hi Free!:D :) I know you do not know me, I didn't join until this past spring, so I wasn't really active on the board, but I saw this thread on here and read through all 56 pages to see the progression of updates. I just have to say that yours is truly an inspirational story and a miracle. I just wanted to join in in all the WOHOO and YAY posts that everyone had posted but I was a little too late. So I'll join in now! YAHOOO! YAY!!! YIPEE!! Congratulations on such a great recovery! I just wanted to let you know that one more person has you in their prayers. Even if I just learned of your story today, you'll still be in my thoughts and prayers as you continue to get stronger. I noticed you had a love for OTTBs . I admire that a lot, and I can see why you love them ( I have one myself whom I got from Beulah Park near Columbus OH, his name is Roman Gladiator, but I call him Tucker.) But this is not about me. I again just wanted to express how excited I am for you in your recoveries. Keep "Kickin' On!" You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Free--

I forgot to ask how your young horses are doing? Did you have any more this year?

Didn't you breed some Welton Babies? How are they looking?
