I just returned home from the hospital. Mary is breathing better and they are treating her for an infection. They also did a CT Scan around 11 PM to try ruling out any other problems.
Mary was resting comfortably when I left tonight. I will update you again tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your prayers, jingles, and good wishes for Mary. Please keep them up as they continue to help her recover.
She had a good but tiring day today. They re-scheduled the swallowing test from last Friday to this morning, and she had PT this afternoon. Because she had a difficult Sunday, I spent last night in her room to help her calm down and rest. I left to feed our horses & do farm chores and returned at 4:00 PM. By that time Mary had SUCCESSFULLY completed the swallow test and had finished the physical therapy session. One of the doctors gave her some ice shavings to eat and later I slipped her 2 small pieces of her favorite Popsicle. Mary loved that! The PT really wears her out, but she is getting stronger each day. The left side is weak and the PT should help her gain strength there.
She was resting very comfortably when I left again at 7:30 PM. I will also spend tonight with her. She has been talking a lot today and we have shared many kisses on the forehead. Her mind is really sharp - she has ALWAYS answered our questions correctly.
If they can get the trachea tube removed this week, we plan to get her moved soon to a really good re-hab hospital closer to our farm.
Thanks again for all your support and personal notes.

Hi everyone, sorry that I haven't been posting lately. I am still pretty busy down at the horse park. We are currently putting in the all weather area. It isn't the easiest thing to lay down and build. I just got back from the hospital and I am going back soon to spend the night with my mom. When I walked in her room I couldn't believe how much she has changed from Sunday night the last time I saw her. She was watch tv and drinking water and apple juice and had just gotten done eating her dinner. I am so happy how much she has improved. Heck the way she is improving you might see her at some shows is winter or spring. She was asking me questions about the park, when Crystal is showing the horses next, and when her other son Gene is coming to see her.
I want to thank everyone for all the support, prayers, and wonderful thoughts you have written for her. I now know what a true miracle feels like. I felt it tonight when I walked into her room and saw her watching tv like she had done many of times before this.

Hi everyone happy thanksgiving! We have something to really be thankful this year. I stayed in her room last night and I was there when Dr. Lynn came in to see her. He took her trachea tube out this morning. He also told her that soon they might take her feeding tube out. She was happy to hear that. This morning my mom and I talked quite a long time. She was asking a lot of questions and ask if I could go look at two horses for her near St. Louis. I told her she must be feeling a lot better already talking about her next horse. She told me to let everyone know that you are all wonderful people on this site. And she thanks everyone of your prayers and thoughts. Thank you and happy holidays from the Sparks family!

Just wanted to stop in and say Happy Thanksgiving to the Sparks family! I had missed the fantastic updates from Andy, so in catching up right now, I had to stop and rush for the box of Kleenex! I'm so thrilled to hear of Mary's continued improvements! What a day for being with family and remembering what we're all thankful for!
Today was a sunny, breezy, brisk (ok, it was upper 50's, so not *too* brisk) Thanksgiving day today in Tennessee, so I spent this afternoon -- after lots of/too much food with the fam -- riding my OTTB. Today was all his...no squeezing him in for 15-20 minutes before or after riding the others. It was just 100% Reece! He bowed a tendon at the track last January and I bought him in May. I've heard so much from various people about my bravery (or lunacy!) in giving an OTTB with an injury a second chance...and in eventing, no less! He has made his own, small, miraculous recovery, and each day I ride him now, he is leaping and bounding (literally!) towards being an eventer. I am aiming him for BN at Ocala next November, and no matter whether we can actually be there to "compete" for Mary's OTTB award, just being there will be our reward. I think of Free everyday I ride Reece, and her recovery inspires us every step of the way. When I read that she's got horses she wants to consider buying, then I knew that she was on the road to recovery like never before. Here's hoping for more miracles for the Sparks family in the days ahead. Enjoy the holiday weekend and tell Mary to keep on coming back! Lots of hugs for Free, and Happy Thanksgiving to EVERYONE! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hello everyone. I wanted to give you my view on our Miracle Girl. Or as she put it, she has been "MIRACLE WHIPped". My visits with Mary have been few lately. I have had to work overtime plus trying to get my darn house ready for the holidays. Crystal and I went to see Mary Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Joe called Thursday to tell me Mary had gotten the trachea out and was talking up a storm. He also said he had tried to call that day to talk one of the nurses. He called Mary's room hoping the nurse would answer there. He didn't get the nurse. There was a "Hello" on the other end however. He asked "Who is this"" She said "This is Mary". "What are you doing answering the phone?" he asked. Mary replied with "Well it was ringing!" For those of you that know Mary, you know, she is a very quick witted and funny lady.
Friday, before our visit, Joe called to let me know they put her in a special wheechair. And was able to take her outside for some fresh air.
She loved it along with the pizza she had for
lunch. He said she would probably be really tired when we got there because she had already had a big day. Well guess what, she wasn't. Gene Ray and Marty were there also. We talked and laughed with Mary til my ribs hurt from laughing. When Sunday came, Crystal was raring to go see Mary. She said, "Mom, She's back!" She was ready for more questions about the horses from Mary.
I, like Andy, will never doubt the power of prayer again. So, may I say again. Thanks so much for your prayers and jingles for Mary/Free. BECAUSE they are being answered.
Sincerely, Trina

Even tho you got "left at the gate" you are really making a rally from the back of the pack now, passing horses left and right! Mary is turning for home and taking the lead, keep it up and hit the wire in front!
Just think about what a wonderful Christmas is ahead for you Mary, Joe, Andy and Gene. I know this will be a very special Christmas for you all, truly a gift. I am blessed and honored to have been able to follow your "miracle" through this BB.

Please tell Mary (even though she probably doesn't remember me) that I am waiting for my new OTTB to come to Arizona from New York http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif, that I just got through the Exceller Fund. I know she is so committed to that, and was so supportive when I got my CANTER guy two years ago (who is just an awesome horse...)
This horse from NY has a bone chip in his knee, but he is SO gorgeous, hoping that it's no big deal...
Hugs and best wishes to you all on this journey you are on.... Diana

The latest on free (Mary) -
A lot of good things have happened with Mary since last Wednesday and my last post. I will try to give you a feel for all the changes in her condition. She moved to the rehab hospital on Wednesday afternoon and of course that made her very happy but also tired. On Thursday they took her through rehab evaluations for the entire day. Thursday night they also moved her to a different room with better equipment to aid her recovery. Mary has been asking for a shower for over 2 weeks and it finally happened on Friday morning. She had a schedule of rehab activities all day Friday and, of course, was very tired that night. Saturday she was tired but still had rehab work 4 times during the day. Last night she was sleeping well when I visited her.
Her current conditions-
Mentally - She is very "with it". She has good long term and short term memory. When I ask about COTH names, she remembers many of you from past posts. She has also spoken on the telephone very well to many people. She is always asking about other people and showing her concern for them even while ill herself. Of course the questions about the many horses continue. I expect a full recovery of most of her mental skills.
Physically - The stroke (major bleed) on the right side of her brain almost killed her the first few days. Her recovery did not become apparent for about 4 weeks (last Thursday marked the end of 9 weeks)when she gave us a "thumbs up". The stroke has left her left side VERY weak. The rehab is concentrating on her left arm and leg to provide stimulation to the muscles and rebuild their strength. She is stronger on the right side and can hold her head up, smile broadly, and feed herself. Mary has a good appetite and is eating about 70% of her meals. They are also still feeding her through the stmach tube nightly. That shoud stop soon and hopefully the tube removed. They expect her to be in rehab for the next 5 to 8 weeks.
I am leaving soon for the rehab hospital to meet Andy and see Mary. She has received many get well cards in the mail and we are reading them to her along with many of your COTH posts.
Her revised address is:
Shands Rehab Hospital
Mary Sparks, room 1909
4101 NW 89th Blvd.
Gainesville, FL 32606
Note to Tha Ridge (on the OFF COURSE thread) in Dallas/Fort Worth area - We hope the policeman is surviving. Sending jingles and prayers for him. Removing life support is a very difficult decision. We removed a drain tube from Mary's head, but continued other life support such as feeding and oxygen. Fortunately she was able to rally from her stroke and start responding to us weeks later.

Looking out at a picturesque snowfall with my blanketed horses looking like animated Christmas packages. Anyone else ever notice how Christmassy Rambos are with their green and red? It has all put me in a very mellow, holiday frame of mind.
Mary, your return from the brink has been the best Christmas present ever. I know you'll keep working hard to get out of the rehab hospital and home doing what you love.
Joe and Andy, thank you so much for keeping us in the loop. It's your ongoing presence that makes all the difference to Mary, but we appreciate your passing on our thoughts and prayers.

Joe:
This is usually the first thing I check in the mornings -- updates on Mary. Many times, we hear about an illness, injury, etc. and never find out the outcome. You all have been wonderful about keeping us up-to-date on Mary's condition and recovery.
How blessed Mary is to have you and how blessed you are to have her. She has given so much of herself for the horses, and I can only hope that the many thoughts, prayers, jingles, and kisses on the forehead have brought comfort and helped in Mary's healing. It will surely be a joyful Christmas for your family.

Hey everyone. I haven't posted in awhile but Crystal called me yesterday and pointed out to me all the kind things Xctrygirl/Emily said about me. I want to thank you for your kind words. But I love Mary very much, also. I is so great to have a friend that shares to same interests and loves that you do. She has also helped Crystal, my daughter, pursue her interest and love for horses. Mary and I would talk for hours about horses and many times with Joe in the background hollering "She's at work!!".
I try to go have lunch with her everyday because I am anxious to see her progress. I went last Friday and then didn't get to go over the weekend. (Horseshow MOM) Anyway, I could see big differences after missing for those few days. Again, I can't stress enough the importance of everyone's prayers and jingles. She has come along way but still has a way to go.
Sincerely, Trina

Great that you are back free! I don't know you at all, but I think about you when I'm out looking after JER's little rescue mule, Casper, every day. He has really come out of his shell & I really noticed today that he has gained quite a bit of weight since he got here (he was quite ribby). So great that you are both doing so well!

Mary - you don't know me. I started posting more extensively shortly before your stroke, and rarely on the eventing board (I do mostly dressage and a bit of hj, but have yet to put the two together - and am pretty skeered of immovable jumps http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).
What we have in common is our love of OTTBs, and I know of your efforts to help them. My horse is not a CANTER horse, but he came off the Fairmount track in So IL, and he would have ended up at a kill pen (put together abuse + very sensitive horse + very smart horse + that Nearco/Nasrullah bloodline).
I am so thrilled that you are doing so well. I think your recovery has given all of us hope that miracles can, and do, happen.

WELCOME BACK MARY!!! In your honor there have been many acts of kindness! There are a lot of really great people on this board that have given generously, in many ways, on your behalf. We are so pleased to let you know that today we took a check from the funds we raised to rescue Pal Joey, an older TB that appeared on the CANTERNE site, not sold, and then tracked to Beulah Park in Columbus Ohio. Thanks to the funds raised to honor you, we were not only able to retire Pal Joey, but we raised enough to retire Red River Red, a horse that was purchased for $300 and truly at great risk. He was just adopted last weekend, and we are picking up Joey this weekend. It's an honor to have these horses saved on your behalf.
Welcome back, and stay tuned...we can still take ONE MORE with the generosity and adoption of Red. Your spirit has been inspiring!

How are things going with the Sparks family?
Just so you feel happy about being in Florida, it's a skating rink here. It was 10 degrees when I went out to ride this morning, and becuase the last storm was snow, then rain then back to snow, everything is a frozen rock. But it does look like we might have a white Christmas!

Hi everyone. Just wanted to give you an update on Mary. She progressing little by little. The highlite of my week last week was Thursday. I didn't make it there after work because the weather was horrid. But around 8:00pm I got a call from her. When I asked her how her PT went, she proceeded to tell me about her moving her left leg that day. She said she moved it to the side and picked it up. She said both of the therapists working with her were extremely pleased. I was jumping in my seat and assured her I would be there tomorrow to see for myself. When I got there at 11:30, they were working on the same thing. She was moving the foot to the side and holding it up for a few seconds. The therapist was very pleased with the consistent improvement. After that they worked on Stand UP chair to bed transfers. They did it for the first time. He was extremely pleased about that. He asked me to stay for the evening session; also. I did and saw so much more. Laying on her good side in the bed, he had her pulling her bad leg up and pushing it back. She is very good at pulling it up. He commented that it was much more than she had done the day before. She started showing some signs of fatigue so he started working on her moving her toes. Mary is extremely ticklish, so of course, there was alot of movement. She did however move her toes on her own a little.
As everyone as been saying, baby steps, baby steps. But I think she made some big steps last week. Please keep the prayers and jingles coming. Maybe they will have her standing and walking soon.
Sincerely, Trina

http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif Hi again everyone, the latest on Mary (free) follows.
First, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our COTH Family and Friends from the Sparks family! Thanks to Trina (Leaping Lily) for keeping you updated. She has been a real cheerleader for Mary during the difficult rehab activities. The rehab makes Mary very tired, but she is getting stronger each day. John, her physical therapist, told us yesterday that she has improved greatly this past week. She is improving fast enough that her case manager and rehab team have set a tentative discharge date of January 4th. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Mary's coming home!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif
I am very busy getting our home really for Mary. Since she will be using a wheelchair at first and hopefully only temporarily, I am building a 28' long wheelchair ramp to the back door. Also have to check all door opening widths, and bedroom & bathroom access. Need to make some bathroom modifications to add grab bars, replace the shower doors with a shower curtain, and add two hand held shower heads. I have been training with Mary to help her move from the bed to wheelchair and back. She is working very hard so she can come home ASAP.
Please continue your wonderful support. It has really helped us come through this very difficult period of Mary's recovery. It has been 12 and 1/2 weeks since Mary's stroke on September 29th. She has truely been our miracle girl.

Hello again to our COTH family! A Happy New Year to all. Mary (free) is starting out the new year very well with her rehab work. She is doing more and getting stronger each day. Because of her tough rehab schedule, she also becomes very tired by the afternoon.
Today we practiced helping Mary get into and out of our car from her wheelchair. Her transfers are becoming better with Mary doing most of the effort with only a little help from me. They are working very hard on getting her left leg and arm to recover some strength. The leg is starting to move some and Mary can lift it when laying on her back on the workout bed. She has done so much better the last 2 weeks that the rehab team has requested she remain another week. Her new tentative discharge date is set for next Wednesday, January 11th.
Our home modifications are almost complete. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif We are looking forward to Mary's homecoming next week. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif She also hopes to get back on the COTH forums soon. Please continue your wonderful support. I read every one of your posts and keep Mary updated.

Hello everyone, I am "farmboy", free's husband Joe. The countdown begins for Mary's trip home around 11 AM Wednesday. Every thing is on schedule including Mary's rehab work. Her PT team got her WALKING last week. A couple of steps the first day and 50 FEET the next day. They are really happy with her continuing progress and want her back for outpatient rehab 3 times a week!
She will be welcomed home by family and friends at a small party at our farm Wednesday afternoon. Every thing is ready for her here and her computer is warming up. I am sure she will be posting on COTH by the weekend.
This has been a very difficult journey for us all - Wednesday's homecoming will mark the end of 15 weeks in the hospital for Mary. The results are much better than everyone ever predicted or imagined. We received a true miracle in Mary's recovery. She continues to amaze everyone in her life. It will be great to have her home again!
Thanks again for all your support,

welcome home, Mary!
we'll have to enter a Florida event soon just so we can some to see you.
Mary, on the breeding news, we have a baby due in a few weeks (out of Van Van by Double Honor) and we booked a season to River Keen (in NY) st the GTOBA auction last Saturday, and are now shopping for a suitable broodmare. Still noodling on the 06 breedings for Van Van and Miss Muscles - any thoughts?

Mary, Joe, Andy and all of the family and friends, what a glorious day this is and all of us are so excited. Can't wait to get the news that you are finally home. Mary is truly a miracle and you are so blessed to having such a loving family and support group. Hugs.

Well, it's after 10:00am and that last hour will just fly by this morning. I just couldn't wait until after 11:00 to post my greeting. Wishing a very smooth and quick move home for Free. Looking forward to seeing her more here on COTH when she's ready and settled! Welcome home, Mary!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
