Latest update on Mary - Andy is very busy at the Florida Horse Park (their first event is November 5th & 6th) so I am giving you the latest news.
Mary continues to make baby step improvements in her recovery. On Saturday & Sunday she was communicating with us with hand movements based on our verbal commands. On Sunday she opened her eyes and saw her son Gene Ray waving to her. She suddenly raised her right arm and waved back! It was great surprise to have her respond to what she saw visually.
Today she gave a thumbs-up to her doctor after he awoke her from a deep sleep.
The weekend activities made her very tired and
she has spent the last 2 days resting very comfortably. This is a very slow healing process and she has both good and bad days. We are very happy to have all of your jingles, prayers, and encouragement. We now think of all of you as Mary's extended family.

Thanks for the update, Joe!
That Mary, she's a tough one. I think about her multiple times every day, and send healing thoughts for her every time.
A friend of mine went to the doctor for a routine pelvic exam and they found stage 4 ovarian cancer. The docs got her in, did surgery, but had to leave a big mass that was so involved with her circulatory system that couldn't get it. They basically stitched her up and sent her home to say her goodbyes. She (like Mary) is a selfless woman that has many people who love and admire her that prayed and thought strong healing thoughts for her--and she beat the cancer and is still cancer free, 5 years later. She credits her recovery with all the (as she puts it) 'Help that she got from her friends'.
So, many jingles coming your way!

So excited to hear Joe! I know Andy is crazy busy with the Ocala HT...but many portable jumps will work just fine. (He shouldn't try to stretch himself too thin http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)
So glad to hear good news and progress, baby, progress! Natural sleep is the brain's best healing mechanism. Mary will be tired and should be encouraged to sleep, even though it is so exciting to have her back and tough to let her sleep when all you want to do is interact. Sleeping most of the time is her main goal. So excited about these amazing steps in her recovery.

Well, if there is one thing that horse people know for sure, it is that "baby steps" are often anything *but* small. Sometimes, the tiniest changes and improvements are in many ways gigantic, and that's what keeps us all moving forward. Great news for a chilly Wednesday morning! Thanks for keeping your "family" informed, Joe!

Thank you for your wonderful post. I check this thread first each day. Just thrilled to hear that Mary is responding. Any tiny bit of improvement is huge. MORE GREAT NEWS ABOUT MARY!!! She had a wonderful day and is communicating with us. She can open her eyes and will look around the room. I asked her if she knew she was in the hospital and she nodded yes. We play music for her and she also nodded yes to liking it. Mary has had a tremondous week of recovery thanks to her strong spirit and all of your wonderful support on COTH. We read many of your posts to her and she seems to still know some of your COTH "handles". When I ask her if she knew who "Fred" was, she nodded yes! Thanks Gail for the CD that arrived today - I played "Small Victories" for Mary tonight. I am writing this with tears of joy in my eyes tonight. Thank you all you COTH'ERS for your strong support during this very difficult time.
Note to FlightCheck & Bensmom - thanks for your generous support of the special award in Mary's honor at the Florida Horse Park. Mary would be both embarrassed and honored. I hope she can present it to the winner next year.

Oct. 30, 2005, 06:37 AM
Oh Andy -- I am in tears hearing such good news. I have been involved in family problems of my own, but they pale beside yours and I am SO HAPPY that Mary is back with us!!!
Our last communication was about you guys making some money by releasing the name "Stevie Wonderful" as a Jockey Club registered name since he will never race again, so that someone else could use it -- for a fee. Of course, you could still use it as his name in the eventing world; just not as a racehorse.
This came about because a good 2 year old named Stevie Wonderboy owned by Merv Griffin by Steven Got Even was beginning to win out in California.
I bet Mary that Merv must have tried to get "Stevie Wonderful" first since it is a much better name.
Mary thought that was a great idea and was willing to do it for $100.
Well, you tell your Mom that, yesterday, Stevie Wonderboy won the Breeders Cup Juvenile and will (most likely) be voted 2 year old champion. So now you guys can make some really decent bucks by selling Stevie's name to the highest bidder. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif
See if that doesn't bring a smile to her face. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

To Lord Helpus and others on COTH and CANTER:
Thank you for the post Lord Helpus, we saw the win by Stevie Wonderboy on the TV in Mary's hospital room yesterday. What an exciting win! I "wonder" if our Stevie is related to the winner? I am sure Mary would know or could find out. I have no way to look it up since she took care of the breeding info.
Since the "Stevie" names are now so popular and our situation has changed, we would propose the following in honor of Mary:
Help us to sell the name "Stevie Wonderful" to the highest bidder and put the money in the special fund already established to save other horses off the track through the CANTER
organizations. Any other suggestions or comments are welcome.

All I can say is WOW!
I go away for one day to breeder's cup and everyone and Mary kick it into high gear.
Bensmom and the canter folks... thank you. The world needs far more people like yourselves.
Andy and Joe.. with a little luck you all will be receiving a package in the mail by the end of the week to give to Mary. I just have some more teeth to pull~!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Mary: I went to Breeder's Cup! Scrappy ran in an undercard stakes race and was a very good 2nd to a horse of Todd Pletcher's. But the cool part was that since we were in the 2nd of 10 I was able to go back and watch. I saw Lost in the Fog, sadly he lost. I watched and enjoyed an afternoon that was cold but so beautiful. The sun shone, the trees were changing their leaves and I kept having moments where I would stop walking make myself look around and remember these things. I wished I could share every sight, sound, smell. Oh and in the morning I got to give a little bay horse some peppermints. You might know him well. Lord knows Scrappy should too. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Anyway the best part was that I had a paddock pass for the Classic so I was inches away from the best horses in the country and watched them all stride by and thought of you.
Keep on kicking and enjoy the music. Your care package is "in progress" but then so are you. Smile for all of us and be well.
All my best,
~Emily

Joe, that is a wondeful idea! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif Mary is someone that always comes to mind when I think of successful re-careering of OTTBs -- I can remember talking to her and Crystal after the debut of one of the CANTER cuties and how proud she was! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
And, I want to thank you guys for saying nice things about me, but I haven't done anything special -- just stepped in to help Flightcheck bring to fruition the idea that the COTH eventing forum had in the first place. (Mostly I've been busy with the silver polish! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif ) The folks that are so special and should be honored with a perpetual trophy are Mary, the CANTER and Exceller volunteers, and others like Lord Helpus who step in when a terrific OTTB needs them the most. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif
I believe that I should have the go-ahead to announce the Equine Spirit Award, given in honor of Mary Sparks. This award will be given to the OTTB with the best score at the inaugural Ocala HT and thereafter. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Maybe by next November my darling OTTB will be ready to compete there and see if we have a stab at winning it! (hey, we took a couple more steps forward this weekend by going on *two* outings and lived to tell! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
I will plan get a photo of the award and its presentation next weekend so that you guys can all see the idea that you had here come to completion!

just checking in to let you know we are thinking of you here in Ontario. Glad the cd arrived... Small Victory is the obvious song (about an OTTB mare) but another is King of Rome - it is about a racing pigeon (!) - but mostly both songs are about love, faith, courage and determination - all things Mary and her loving family have in spades..
Hoping for another good day today!

Libby, this is FAB. I wish I could come compete there, too. Be sure to have the announcer (Flightcheck?) say a few things about Mary and her devotion to OTTBs during the awards ceremony. All during the event too...'for those of you just joining us, we have an award here at the Ocala HT in honor of...' Jeekers. There will not be a dry eye in the house. How cool. You guys rock. Hi guys,
I had a funny (true) Halloween story to pass on to Mary.
So I am lying here in bed, working on the laptop at placing 2 Tb's that need retirement from Del. Park. (See thread on Off Course.. See what you have started!!! Like I don't have enough work to do already. No just kidding this is fun) and evening is setting in. And there are a lot of kids in the neighborhood so I start hearing them as they're trick or treating. Well I am thinking nasty thoughts about the little heathens who shaving creamed my car and added a few gummy bears to my windshield last night, when all of a sudden I hear screams. Now anytime I hear screaming I am surprised but then I hear an odd noise I can't place. I stop typing but no more noise.
So I go back to work. 10 mins later...MORE and higher pitched screams and now the second noise faintly records as being some kind of motor. Well I wait and sure enough a few mins later it comes again...
So here's whats been going on. The kids are trick or treating. They knock on the door of the house across the st. Friendly people dole out candy, someone inside says, "Hey did you hear something out back?" Kids and homeowners all look around. Wherein father or elder brother comes flying out from behind the house revving a chainsaw dressed as Jason!!!!! I am not making this up.
Only once did I hear a child so upset that it was crying and screaming in a shrill manner. Now I would have been scared out of my wits. But most people were heard laughing after the "attack."
Man....even in Delaware we get attacked in the suburbs. Can't wait to go back to Belmont.
Hope you're improving today. Keep squeezing and blinking. We all miss you. Oh and Lad was a bad boy Friday. He dumped me!!!! But it wasn't all bad. He got some nice green grass in his tummy before I caught up and made him work. Oh the poor life of Lad. And before you ask, yes I'm perfectly fine. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi everyone, thanks again for your strong support.
Update on Mary - Halloween is one of Mary's favorite holidays. Last night she listened to the eerie haunted house she bought in August. She also is wearing very colorful halloween socks with pumpkins, black cats, etc.
Mary's continues to improve. It's always a treat to see what she can do new every day. Last night she moved her right arm up to her chest and was moving her fingers trying to scratch. Later when I asked her if she was okay, she SAID very softly "uh-uh". What a wonderful surprise!
Note to FlightCheck - You better be practicing the "Equine Spriit Award" presentation because many of Mary's close family will be there and we have 3 OTTB's entered in the show with Crystal riding. If one of Mary's horses wins the award, there won't be a dry eye anywhere.
Good luck to all riders and horses. Here's to a great weekend and successful show.

Wonderful, wonderful news!!! I think it would be beautiful if Crystal and one of free's OTTBs receives the award. I feel for Flightcheck, Bensmom, and others who are there, if one of them does win. It's making me teary-eyed just *thinking* about that kind of poetic conclusion, much less to see it if it were to come to fruition. Here's to a wonderful event and go OTTBs!!!

We'll be putting up a bio and info on an OTTB Grant in Education offered by an individual in about three weeks, so Mary would be in good company.

Hello, everyone. Joe has asked me to do the update on Mary tonight since I am the one that saw it. I have been sick for a week and haven’t
been able to go stay with her. I, like everyone else, have been checking on the forum to get updates from Joe and Andy. I got to the hospital about 5:30 this afternoon. When I got there, Mary was lying in the bed holding her head up with both eyes open looking around the room. She did so many things I don’t where to begin. Two nurses came in and I told them that Joe didn’t tell me about her being able to hold her head up. They said they hadn’t seen it either and were just as surprised as me. I asked her many questions and she would shake
her head yes and no. Let me tell you. When you talk about those horses and Andy, she really goes to nodding and both eyes are wide open.
Mary helped Crystal find Mario’s Moon and Storm Counter, an OTTB. When I told her the mare won the Best Score Award at Canterbury’s Derby last weekend, she nodded a lot. Her horse, Formosa Strait, has the same personality
as Storm Counter. She nodded in agreement with me.
As I talked on about the horses, she reached up and scratched her nose with her right hand. I started crying, amazed over the progress she has made since I stayed with her last week. I want to thank everyone one for the prayers and
jingles, as they are bringing us a MIRACLE.
Sincerely, Trina

Hey everyone, Trina, again. Joe called me last nite and asked me to let you know Mary had a great weekend. Two of her sons and her daughter-in-law stayed most of the weekend with her while Joe was going back in forth from the farm, feed stores, to the show and then to the hospital. What a busy man. He said Mary is staying awake more frequently and for longer periods of time. By the time he got to the hospital last nite she was very tired but awake
long enough to hear how the show went. He also
told her that Alice won the award presented in her honor. Then Andy called and her eyes came wide open again so Joe put the phone to her ears so she could get Andy's update on the show. Joe said there was a lot of nodding and
smiling going on.
One of her doctors talked to Joe last nite and
he is going to have a PT call Joe today. That
is very encouraging news. I can't express to
you enough what everyone's good thought's and prayers have done for this family. Please keep
them coming has the MIRACLE still continues.
Sincerely, Trina

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Mary had another great day yesterday. She is getting stronger and more alert each day. I have been giving her little kisses on the forehead every day for the past 3 weeks per BarbaraG's suggestion. Last night she did two special things that touched my heart.
First, she surprised me by SPEAKING the word YES to a question. The doctor's had put a cap on the tube in her throat. It made it possible for her to breathe normally and TALK. It was on about 6 hours and was removed about 10 PM to help her rest.
At 11 PM the nurses came in to re-position her from her back to the left side. All that activity awakened her and she opened both eyes wide open. I was holding her left hand with my hand and she started moving the hands to her chin. With my fingers next to her lips, she began kissing the back of my fingers. Then she indicated she wanted more kisses on the forehead, which I immediately did for her.
She was sleeping very peacefully when I left at midnight.

free, joe and andy,
I want to let you know just how much this thread means to me right now.
Yesterday, a friend had a terrible riding accident. She was on an older, quiet horse walking on a paved road and she wasn't wearing a helmet. Something happened -- very quickly, in about the time it takes to turn around -- and she was on the street, unconscious, with serious head trauma.
Fortunately, paramedics were on the scene within minutes and she was in the trauma unit minutes after that. Surgeons removed a large blood clot and now she's stable but still in precarious condition.
Last night at the hospital, free's story helped keep me going. My last visit to this particular hospital's trauma unit did not have a happy ending and being there again was really difficult. I had to constantly remind myself that every case is different and thinking about free and the rollercoaster of her progress helped keep me on an optimistic track.
I certainly don't mean to take this thread to faraway places. But I do want you all to know that right now, free's recovery is a source of strength and hope for me at a time when I really need it.
And please, everybody, as much as I hate to say this -- make yesterday the last time you ever sat on a horse without a helmet. You're not just wearing that helmet for yourself but also for the people who care about you.

Nov. 8, 2005, 10:38 AM
Amen about the helmets whenever you sit on a horse.
I got on my new mare while she was haltered and being held, and she exploded. Threw me 12 in the air, and when I came down, my rotator cuff exploded. I wasn't wearing a helmet, and it was a miracle that I didn't land on my head or break my neck.
I'll never GET ON a horse again without a helmet, no matter how old, how quiet, or even if it's being held.
Still jingling in Mississippi that free is back in the barn in just a few months from now.

JER - big hugs to you, and most positive healing thoughts for your friend. These are all constant reminders (as if we needed them) that life is indeed fragile, and things can change in a minute.
Since my accident last year, I have not been riding - and have only just started back in the last month or so. I am ashamed to say that I have not been wearing my helmet.. can't seem to find it ( I know that is no excuse - but we all do it - ) I will take your kind advice and get a new one today.
Sending healing thoughts on a blustery and wet November morning to your friend JER, and also of course to our dear Mary.

Wow!!! What wonderful news! Like many others on this thread, I've never met Mary, but I know she must be a strong, well-loved woman, and both of those things will help her in her recovery.
About the helmet thing... I've been lazy about wearing mine, too. Fortunately was smart enough to have it on when I was bucked off twice (yup...quite the little rodeo) last week. Ended up with a hip pointer and damaged tendons in my shoulder. But, a kick to the helmet (thank you helmet) instead of my head saved what's left of my brain (can't be too "brainy" if I got back on for a second round, right).
And Fred...go find that helmet NOW!!

Update on Mary - It will be 6 weeks ago tonight that tragedy stuck our family. The next day we were given very little hope for Mary's recovery. It has been a very difficult emotional rollercoaster ride of lows and highs as she went from intensive care to immediate care to general care at Shands hospital.
I am very happy to tell you today that Mary is well on her way to recovery. She's had another 2 good days and her strength & will to survive continue to give us all hope. Last night she was answering questions with head shakes, arm waves, and VOICE responses. Trina put some lip gloss on Mary's lips and Mary helped to spread it around. Later when facial cream was put on her face, Mary also used her fingers to apply it like makeup. When asked if she had an itch, she raised 2 fingers and proceeded to scratch in 2 different places. She sometimes gives a big smile when we discuss her favorite subjects - Andy, family, COTH, OTTBs, our horses, and our dogs. The nurses think she is now ready for physical therapy and we are trying to get PT started soon.
I can hardly wait to see her again each day to find out about her new activities and surprises.

Thanks again everyone for your love and support for Mary. She continues to improve and surprise us all. Thursday night she indicated a need for an ink pen and paper to write us a note. She wrote several "words" that we could not read. We tried again Friday night with the same result. Saturday we bought her a white eraseable board and felt markers to use. The writing was better but still not readable. We will continue trying until she can write us good messages. I am sure she has many questions and commments bottled up that she is anixous to write.
Saturday night several of us were gathered in her hospital room telling funny stories about Mary over the past 20 years. We were all laughing and having a good time. Mary would give a big smile and chuckle as she remembered those times. She displays good long and short term memory capabilities.
I am going to meet with Mary's doctors early this morning to discuss getting physical therapy for her.

I am very teary eyed (happy tears) as I tell you the great news about Mary - I saw her at 6:30 AM this morning as she was starting to wake up. She wanted to brush her teeth again like she did yesterday. I gave her a new tooth brush (one of those children's brushes that lights up and flashes for a minute as a brushing timer) and she used it to clean her teeth.
Then she wanted to write a note. After several attempts, she printed with a large red felt maker the words "THANK YOU BA??????". I asked her who she wanted to thank and SHE SAID "BARBARA" in a very clear voice! Many thanks to BarbaraG for all the little kisses on the forehead - Mary gets many every day and she really likes them.
The doctor arrived about 7 AM doing his rounds. When he asked her for a thumbs-up, she raised her arm, waved her hand, and put a thumb up! The doctor is very happy with her progress and is going to have PT started this week. The plan is to build her strength doing rehab 3 times a week until she is strong enough to be move to the Shands ReHab Hospital which is nearer to our farm.
Please keep up your prayers and jingles - they are working wonders for Mary!

Joe, It seems like such a short time ago you were excitedly telling us about Mary opening her eyes and scratching her nose, when now she is smiling, nodding, writing (the "readability" cannot be far behind, now), brushing her teeth, and applying her own moisturizer/make-up! All of these things over the past few weeks are miles from where things were a week or so into your experience. I'm confident that once you get some physical therapy set up for her, that you will be able to regale us all with the really joyful improvements that I know she will make very soon. Continue to keep us all informed of her remarkable recovery and enjoy your time with her and the rest of your family. Hey everyone. Talked to Joe today and he wanted me to give you the update on Mary.
Crystal and I went to see her last night. She just keeps on surprising us. I had come
with the intent of giving her a manicure. When I asked her if I could do her nails instead of squeezing our hands to reply, she said, “If you want too.” I squealed with
joy and she laughed at me. Crystal asked her if she was ready for some real food and she shook her head yes. I mean a big, yes! We all started laughing and she laughed with us. They have had the trek capped off since yesterday and if she continues to do well. They are going to take it out in the next couple of days. They are going to start some PT in her room 3 times a week in order to get her ready for the rehab center. He is supposed to be checking out the Shands rehab center today.
I cannot stress to everyone enough, how much your continued support and prayers mean to this family, as their Miracle continues, Thank you.

Joe-
What exciting news.
If you go to Toys R Us, you can find magnetic letters which Mary can use to 'write' for you. Also, in fancy little card and stationary shops, you can find magnetic phrases and words used to write poetry on the fridge. These could also help her communicate.
Keep the good news coming! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am just thrilled with Mary's progress each time I check this thread. She has such a strong spirit and a lot of folks sending healing vibes to her. I think back how grave things looked for a while and it truly brings tears to my eyes to think how far she has come. More prayers and jingles coming your way.

night.
We all started laugh
absolutely great news! i'm so glad to hear this.

Mary, you area true Champion in showing us all how to live life. Thank-you!
Would a laptop computer make writing easier? If so, I bet I can find an older freebie if the hospital or you guys don't have one available.

Mary, we're heading into the holiday week, and you know what that means! I hope I can get on the 'net to check on your progress, but if not, I want to know that I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.
We will be giving thanks for so many things, large and small: a horse's nicker, being surrounded by loved ones, your continued recovery, and, of course, many little kisses on the forehead.

Teary eyed jingles & forehead kisses from the Carolinas - Go Mary!

The Miracle of Mary's recovery continues. There are so many things to tell you since the last update. After Trina and Crystal were there Monday night, our vet, Susan T. visited Mary and brought her a stuffed toy horse. Mary immediately named "him" Coddles and later gave him a second name of Mr. Softly.
When I asked his name Tuesday night, she held up 2 fingers and said he had 2 names. She hugs Coddles when she sleeps.
Mary is such a teaser. When she wanted to brush her teeth, I got the nurse in to help her. When she was finished brushing, the nurse was leaving and asked Mary if she knew I was and she shook her head NO! I know Mary is getting much better when she starts teasing.
They gave her PT Wednesday & Thursday. They worked her legs and arms and got her sitting up on the side of her bed. These sessions really made her tired. She was sleeping a lot both evenings.
Wednesday morning I was talking to her and she said "How's the coffee coming?". I said "what coffee?". She said "Aren't you making me some coffee?". I told her she could not have any coffee yet so she settled for just smelling some in a cup.
This morning she put her hand up to her ear and asked for a telephone. She wanted to call Marti, our daughter-in-law. I dialed the cell phone and Mary held the phone while she talked to Marti for several minutes.
Mary really enjoys the little kisses on her forehead - today she returned some to my forehead!
She has been off oxygen for 3 days and breathing well on her own. They are looking at removing the trachea tube soon if she continues to breathe okay. They also scheduled her for a swallowing test today.
Everything was looking good when I left her this morning - now comes a bump in the road. The nurse called about 2 hours ago to say Mary was having some problem breathing and they were going to run some tests. When I called back just an hour ago, Mary was breathing better but now has a fever. I'm heading to the hospital and will update you later today.

Joe -- thank you for the full update! If you could only imagine how we all hang on every word, every small/tiny/infitessimal detail of your posts! Things sound fabulous with Mary's continued strengthening and her lovely, positive attitude. I will keep you all in my prayers this weekend that the fever is just a small side-affect and doesn't cause any more serious problems. Cuddles to Coddles and lots of happy thoughts as you and your family start the pre-holiday-week-weekend. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Joe, she's come so far, maybe it's just a bit fast, so here's hoping for a teeny speed 'bump'. Hoping for a great next report.
