WTH is that? It looks like someone made it out of cotton balls, leaves and a few pipe cleaners. Luna must be luna moth? Cool looking beastie.

Wow Carol...did you take that photo??? What a fantastic shot!

I get Luna Moths on the side of my barn every few mornings. Had one a couple weeks ago bigger than my head. They're so gorgeous.

This week I had a smaller one on the side of the barn. I was admiring it that morning and when I went back down to put out lunch hay it was gone. Then I walked into the barn to find Luna Moth wings on the floor. One of my barn swallows got it...and it was a little over half the size of one of them, LOL!

I had a weird looking moth-thing on my barn this morning. It was different shades of brown with really ornate looking wings...and the bottom half of the body was curled up over it's back. I haven't found a photo matching it on Google yet. Anyone have any clues? It was pretty big, about 1/2 my palm.

Thanks, yes it is a luna moth. I think it just came out of its coccoon. It is about the size of the palm of my hand

ETA: this was taken with my Kodak point and shoot Z980

LOL, you are looking at it. The feathery things are its antenae, think rabbit ears, and you can see one eye below the antena on the right

Very cool picture. What a weird critter - looks like it's made out of pipe cleaners and cotton balls.

I had one of these gorgeous critters in my garden a few years ago, and got some pix - but nothing as cool as the OP's perspective. That is an incredible shot.

Here's my luna: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3186/2927510875_ecd60354fa_o.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3186/2927510875_ecd60354fa_o.jpg)

GotGait..that pretty much describes a Luna, LOL!
And yep, they're as soft as they look. Not that I've pet one.

Nope, that would be weird.

(btw, they're not keen on being petted)

Johnnysauntie...that's a really nice photo too! The colors came out lovely!

They ARE huge!!!
We had one around here the other day, the size of a dinner plate :dead: scared the poop out of me when it buzzed by my head...

If I get a vote, could I please have a luna moth instead of a gator? Kthxbai.

Just gorgeous. Now I'm wondering about the moth I saw years ago in New England. It was hanging from a tree and it was (IIRC) an all-over pale green -- not the lovely pattern in johnnysauntie's picture. I assumed luna moth at the time but now I'm not sure. Time for some moth googling (beats working, on a Friday ).

Very cool pic - even though for some reason moths give me The Willies.

I saw one of these up close & personal the other evening:

I thought it was a hummingbird until I got (too!) close

Hey all -- for those of you who are interested, my moth googling has revealed... I believe johnnysauntie's fine specimen is a polyphemus moth (http://www.pbase.com/m3ling/image/133754208) not a luna (http://www.pbase.com/m3ling/image/76608312).
